Moon Fargis purrrrrrsssssssss
Moon Fargis: hi adelene :)
Adelene Dawner: Hi Moon ^.^
Adelene Dawner: ^.^
Adelene Dawner giggles.
Moon Fargis purrrrrrsssssssss
Moon Fargis: fael made this poseball :) i think its great:)
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm, she showed me. ^.^
Adelene Dawner: It is the cutest thing ^.^
Moon Fargis humms cutely.
Adelene Dawner giggles. ^.^
Moon Fargis purrzzzzzzzzz
Adelene Dawner still has not found good sounds yet. Workin' on it.
Moon Fargis purrrrrrsssssssss
Adelene Dawner purrrrrrsssssssss
Moon Fargis: ^^
Adelene Dawner: I'm not fond of gestures. I'll have to see about pulling that apart and putting the sound in my hud. Hi Tarmel!
Moon Fargis: morning tarmel :)
Tarmel Udimo: hey there moon and ade
Moon Fargis: how are you today?:)
Tarmel Udimo: greta1
Tarmel Udimo: opps great!
Tarmel Udimo: finally have my home
Tarmel Udimo: in SL
Moon Fargis: yes? cool, where?
Tarmel Udimo: close to corvi and ade
Moon Fargis: ^^
Adelene Dawner: Cool ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: means when i want to log in world I don't just have to come to PaB, eve though I of course enjoy that :-)
Moon Fargis: ^^
Tarmel Udimo: yes when I feel like its ready I'll have an open house :-)
Moon Fargis: an open house? does it get atleast a roof ?:)
Tarmel Udimo: ahh its what I call a house warming :-)
Tarmel Udimo: ade I love your av
Moon Fargis: its cute :)
Adelene Dawner: Thanks ^.^
Moon Fargis: *tickles her nose*
Adelene Dawner is kind of falling asleep at the keyboard, here.
Moon Fargis: yes then you better get to bed :)
Adelene Dawner: I think I'm definitely not on Hawaii time. I might even be in Californai by now.
Tarmel Udimo: what time is it for you ade?
Adelene Dawner: Local? 4:20 am. But I was sleeping from 6am to 2pm last week.
Tarmel Udimo: ahh the old jet lag - know it well
Adelene Dawner laughs. "Yes, except that I haven't traveled!"
Moon Fargis: hehe well in ades case its a..home jet lag :)
Adelene Dawner giggles.
Tarmel Udimo: the midnight shift?
Adelene Dawner: Lack of having to keep to any kind of schedule at all.
Tarmel Udimo: must be nice
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: except as a free lancer I have days like that too, except
the people I dela with are on 9-5 mostly, so I kind of have to work
around that
Adelene Dawner: I do programming - much more flexible.
Tarmel Udimo: yes sounds like my kind of life style
Adelene Dawner: I'm liking it ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: been doing it for a while?
Adelene Dawner: Just since the beginning of January.
Tarmel Udimo: ahh, but you were programming before that?
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm. I've been programming professionally in SL for nearly a year now.
Tarmel Udimo: so is this a newish career?
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm. So far so good, though. I'm laready pretty
secure for this year... part of that is that I've made a point of
keeping my expenses low, but it's still pretty impressive, I think.
Tarmel Udimo: congrats! its all what we want, to be doing something we love and get paid for it!
Adelene Dawner: ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: and has this been a big career shift?
Adelene Dawner: Yeah, though it doesn't feel like it. Most of what I'm
getting paid for is just knowing SL so well... it *feels* like I'm just
playing, and getting paid.
Tarmel Udimo: nice
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: so is there a link that kind of explains how SL actually runs, operates
Tarmel Udimo: in simple terms :-)
Adelene Dawner: Not exactly.
Tarmel Udimo: I mean I know its being run by a bunch of computers but thats about all I know :-)
Adelene Dawner: A lot of what I do is, like I said, programming -
there's an in-world programming language that's specially made for SL.
But it's not just a matter of learning the commands, you have to be
familiar with all the aspects of how prims and avs interact with
themselves and each other.
Tarmel Udimo: right, so does that mean you're seeing all the scripting going on - a replication of us sitting here for instance?
Adelene Dawner: Nope. That's all on the Linden servers, and I don't
have access to it in any direct way. I *am* going to start playing with
OpenSim soon, which means having my own (small) world, separate from
SL, but using the same kind of software they use to run SL... that's
going to be fun to play with. ^.^
Moon Fargis: hmm i hope opensims will be integrated in sl one time
Adelene Dawner: But what I do now is more on the level of the fountain
that dissapears with a command, or these cushions with their animated
sitting poses, or the autologger.
Adelene Dawner nods at Moon ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: yes so do you work for kira or linden?
Adelene Dawner: Me? I've done a bit of volunteer work for PaB, but I
mostly work for Threedee's company, 3DEmbodiment, which builds things
for other companies and groups that want to do things in SL.
Tarmel Udimo: ahhh okay
Adelene Dawner: We're trying to specialize in educational-type stuff, but we're doing all kinds of things.
Adelene Dawner: The virtual school we're going to be building for Miami Dade College soon will be fun. ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: sounds great
Adelene Dawner: And once we get OpenSim going, we're probably going to
be doing some virtual museum stuff - SL's not too good for that, since
kids aren't allowed to come.
Tarmel Udimo: so are there any confidentiality issues in an open sim
Adelene Dawner: I doubt it, or at least not any more issues than there'd be using a regular website-based forum or the like.
Tarmel Udimo: does it mean everyone has access and use what ever someone's developed?
Adelene Dawner: It depends on how you have it set up.
Adelene Dawner: I intend to have a personal sim, and only my friends
are going to have access to that, but I've already been to one
open-access beta-version OpenSim.
Tarmel Udimo: yes which means anyone can go there, but what else does it mean?
Adelene Dawner: Whatever the owner sets it to mean, just like in SL.
Tarmel Udimo: okay... sorry for all the questions...
Adelene Dawner: it's okay. It's just that that's a hard one to answer.
Adelene Dawner: There's just so many options. ^.^
Moon Fargis: the problem so far is that SL and opensim is a totaly
different server so you create a new av with each opensim you visit
exept they are in a server cluster
Adelene Dawner nods at Moon.
Tarmel Udimo: ohh, typical, I always seem to want 'those kind of answers' or have 'those kind of questions' :-)
Adelene Dawner chuckles.
Tarmel Udimo: you'll need to explain that one moon
Moon Fargis: opensims are not connected to SL
Adelene Dawner: Well, OpenSim is supposed to be just like SL, only
better in some ways, so it's going to have at least as many options.
Moon Fargis: that means you have to create a new account on each opensim if they are working alon
Moon Fargis: wich means empty inventory and back to ruth
Tarmel Udimo: oh okay...
Moon Fargis: so you start totally new
Tarmel Udimo: but notevery time you long on thoiugh?
Tarmel Udimo: *log
Adelene Dawner: Like on websites - if you sign up for an account on one
website, you have an account there, but if you go to a different site,
you have to sign up for a different account at the new site.
Moon Fargis: no but everytime you want to visit another opensim server
Tarmel Udimo: okay well that's understandable
Adelene Dawner: The difficult part is, you can't (yet?) bring inventory from one account to the other.
Moon Fargis: and i really doubt lindens will integrate opensims to sl
Tarmel Udimo: ohh that's a techo problem, as an AV would I want to bring everything with me? or would I want to start a fresh..
Tarmel Udimo: oh that's right tarmel's just an av :-)
Adelene Dawner: heh
Adelene Dawner: yeah.
Tarmel Udimo: well hey it would be great in RL..
Adelene Dawner: Tarmel's stuck in SL. You'd have to make a new av to visit an opensim.
Moon Fargis: well its not only yourt av also your name
Tarmel Udimo: start a fresh get reborn
Moon Fargis: so when someone uses your name in another open sim and messes around he can do alot of stress
Adelene Dawner nods at Moon.
Tarmel Udimo: Hadn't thought of that aspect...
Tarmel Udimo: and yet we cope with it in SL, I've run into a few udimo's and tarmels lately
Moon Fargis: ^^
Tarmel Udimo: rather unsettling, but then I realise I'm unique and so are they
Tarmel Udimo: so how big is SL?
Tarmel Udimo: like how do you measure that?
Moon Fargis: hehe i just know that there are over 1000 persons wich starts with "moon"
Adelene Dawner: It'd be measured in sims, whihc are 256m squares... don't know how many there are, though. Thousands?
Tarmel Udimo: okay
Tarmel Udimo: so 256 is a default size for sims, how did they come up with that figure or was it just sort of arbitary?
Adelene Dawner: 256 is 2^something ... a relevant number for computer geeks.
Moon Fargis: 2^8
Adelene Dawner: All sims in SL are 256x256 - OpenSims may be different?
Adelene Dawner giggles at Moon.
Tarmel Udimo: ^ + ?
Tarmel Udimo: ^=?
Adelene Dawner: two to the 8th power. Two, multiplied by itself 8 times.
Tarmel Udimo: ahhh not bit code
Adelene Dawner: The number 256 is relevant to bit code for similar reasons.
Tarmel Udimo: yes?
Moon Fargis: please excuse me i have to check something
Adelene Dawner: cya, Moon.
Tarmel Udimo: vya moon
Adelene Dawner: ok... have you heard of 'binary'?
Tarmel Udimo: yeah o and 1
Adelene Dawner: or 'base 2'?
Adelene Dawner: yeah.
Tarmel Udimo: bas 2 no
Adelene Dawner: base 2 is a counting system.
Tarmel Udimo: okay?
Adelene Dawner: yanno how we go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... and then
one-zero? The fact that we change to two digits at ten is entirely
arbirtary.
Tarmel Udimo: yes, you mean we just didn't come up with a single digit number for 11?
Adelene Dawner: Some ancient cultures did, actually. There were a few that used base 12.
Adelene Dawner: Regular numbering is called base ten, because we add a new digit at powers of 10.
Tarmel Udimo: yes understanding
Adelene Dawner: So base 12 would count like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, 10...
Adelene Dawner: And you can add a digit at a lower number, too.
Tarmel Udimo: not sure how that would work?
Tarmel Udimo: did just watch a fabulous program on the number zero.. the indians invented it
Adelene Dawner: ok, base 6: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20,.....54, 55, 100, 101, 102...
Tarmel Udimo: but this doesn't make sense in practical terms
Adelene Dawner: but there, '10' doesn't mean ten, it means six. and
'11' means seven. The extra digit tells you how many sixes you have.
Adelene Dawner: In practical terms, no, base six is not very useful. But, for computers, base two is.
Tarmel Udimo: ahhh got it... so still just a counting system
Adelene Dawner: Yep.
Tarmel Udimo: why is that?
Tarmel Udimo: base 2 I mean
Adelene Dawner: In base two, you count like this: 1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 110, 111
Tarmel Udimo: still just 1 and 0
Adelene Dawner: Yep. But it's a counting system... that's the numbers one through seven in base two.
Tarmel Udimo: okay
Tarmel Udimo: which is why it works in a xomputer system
Tarmel Udimo: computer
Moon Fargis: back :)
Tarmel Udimo: hey moon
Adelene Dawner: Yep. Computers are pretty dumb in some fundamental
ways. A computer can't understand the concept of the number three,
even, without some help. But 'on' and 'off' are fundamental enough for
them to understand. So you use 'on' for one, and 'off' for zero, do a
bit of fiddling, and hey, the computer can count.
Tarmel Udimo: hummm very interesting
Moon Fargis points adelene at the time
Adelene Dawner: Which brings us back to why 256 (and other powers of two) are interesting to computer geeks.
Tarmel Udimo: thanks for filling in some blanks ade
Adelene Dawner: ;P @ Moon
Tarmel Udimo: sounds like you have to do...
Tarmel Udimo: go
Adelene Dawner: Ah, I'm okay.
Moon Fargis: hmm a sleepless day then ade ?
Adelene Dawner: I can sleep 'till whenever, tomorrow. ^.^
Moon Fargis: hoho
Adelene Dawner: :D
Tarmel Udimo: ****Howlllzzzzzzzz****
Moon Fargis: ˙·•| miaaauuuu |•·˙
Adelene Dawner: *chuckle*
Tarmel Udimo: sorry just neede d to contribute
Adelene Dawner: Anyway... yanno how people like numbers like 100 and 1000? 'nice round numbers'?
Tarmel Udimo: yes?
Adelene Dawner: 256 is a nice round number in base 2. it's 10000000, or something like that.
Tarmel Udimo: hummm espcaillay if there's a $ sign in front :-)
Moon Fargis: 1024
Moon Fargis: 2048
Moon Fargis: 4096
Moon Fargis: aso
Adelene Dawner: showoff. :D
Tarmel Udimo: there's something about 1024 why?
Moon Fargis: so when you buy a massstorage like a harddrive and they say 100 GB.. then they lie
Tarmel Udimo: ahhh
Moon Fargis: cus they measure 1 GB = 1000 MB
Moon Fargis: but thats not right
Adelene Dawner: 1024=256x2x2.... 2^10
Moon Fargis: 1 GB is actually 1024 MB
Tarmel Udimo: (yeah it was something else on the tip of my brain - I'll get there:)
Tarmel Udimo: that's where I've seen that number
Tarmel Udimo: and how many gigabites are in all the sl computers
Moon Fargis: so that means normally 100 GB are 102400MB
Tarmel Udimo: right
Moon Fargis: so when they say 100 GB they lie you about 2400 MB
Tarmel Udimo: right, well for the ordinary punter it doesn't make much difference
Moon Fargis: well 2.4 GB are 2.4 GB :)
Adelene Dawner nods!
Tarmel Udimo: 100 GB is a hell of a lot of space
Moon Fargis: and i bought a 1TB harddrive lateley
Tarmel Udimo: tera bite?
Moon Fargis: just imagine what they lied about that
Moon Fargis: yes
Moon Fargis: 1000 GB
Tarmel Udimo: hahahahaha
Adelene Dawner pokes Tarmel.
Tarmel Udimo: sorry
Tarmel Udimo: its all virtual give or take a few GBs :-)
Moon Fargis: heh when you travel back 10 years 24 GB wich they lied at me where verry expensive
Moon Fargis: and alooot
Tarmel Udimo: yes 4 gb was really big
Moon Fargis: 24 :)
Moon Fargis: ah you remember 4
Moon Fargis: yes windows 98 would vit 8 times in it
Tarmel Udimo: yes i remember diskette
Moon Fargis: fit
Adelene Dawner: I don't think my first computer had *one* GB. Remember when they measured it in Kb?
Tarmel Udimo: yes exactly
Moon Fargis: well and 20 years ago 424 GB was a number people belives they would never reach it or need it
Moon Fargis: 24
Adelene Dawner: *nods*
Tarmel Udimo: funnt that!
Moon Fargis: and now ugly winblows need already 16 GB to be installed
Tarmel Udimo: gosh is it that much - i switched to mac and haven't looked back
Moon Fargis: hmhm wise choise i know why i like my amiga
Tarmel Udimo: yes?
Adelene Dawner: One of these days I'm going to get serious about
switching to Linux. Maybe if/when I break down and get a laptop.
Moon Fargis: fast, 150 mb for being installed and i can do all stuff i need todo
Tarmel Udimo: I have two:-)
Adelene Dawner: (Though maybe a second PC would suit me better? Hmm.)
Tarmel Udimo: nothing like a desk top
Tarmel Udimo: PC's are cheap
Tarmel Udimo: but just not very pretty
Adelene Dawner: Pretty funny to be a single person living alone and own 2 PCs and at least three monitors, though.
Moon Fargis: ^^
Tarmel Udimo: well its the sign of the times....
Adelene Dawner: ^.^
Moon Fargis: <- 1 pc 3 amigas 1 monitor *giggles*
Tarmel Udimo: smiles
Tarmel Udimo: that's why its important to get one that really suits you because we spend so much time in front of it
Tarmel Udimo: I lease mine
Tarmel Udimo: and finally got a huge monitor
Moon Fargis: yes but also important to find the right keybards and mouse
Tarmel Udimo: something I couldn't afford otherwise
Tarmel Udimo: yes very
Moon Fargis: i bought now 3 different keyboards the last year
Adelene Dawner: ^.^ Nothing like a huge monitor... though two huge monitors are better. ^.^
Tarmel Udimo: :P
Adelene Dawner: I don't have two huge ones. I'd *like* two huge ones,
but as of right now I have one huge one and one regular one.
Moon Fargis: and all where crap .. couldnt write well on all of them..
until i looked at my roof and found a old pc keyboard from back 1999
..and it worked great!
Tarmel Udimo: well hey that's doing okay
Adelene Dawner: mmhmm ^.^
Moon Fargis: so i noticed i can wrtie on thise flat laptop like keys
Tarmel Udimo: that was for ade
Adelene Dawner notes Moon's keyboard preferences.
Adelene Dawner: ^.^
Moon Fargis: can't i mean
Tarmel Udimo: yeah well that's the problem with laptops, need a mouse, can't use the touch screen
Adelene Dawner: Hi Fa!
Tarmel Udimo: too cumbersome
Moon Fargis: morning fael!
Tarmel Udimo: hi fael
Adelene Dawner: ...good grief, it's 5:30 in the morning.
Moon Fargis: hmhm
Adelene Dawner: I should definitely go sleep.
Fael Illyar: that's a bit longer than I stayed up last night :)
Moon Fargis: hmhm!
Tarmel Udimo: yeah, this SL business keeps me up
Tarmel Udimo: way too much
Moon Fargis: ˙·•| mmh *nods* |•·˙
Tarmel Udimo: ****Howlllzzzzzzzz****
Tarmel Udimo: moooooooooooooooooooon
Moon Fargis: hehe howling on the moon heh ?:)
Tarmel Udimo: yeahhey i like that
Tarmel Udimo: yes
Tarmel Udimo: byb
Tarmel Udimo: phone
Fael Illyar smiles.
Fael Illyar: nice Moon, Moon :)
Moon Fargis: ˙·•| mmh *nods* |•·˙
Adelene Dawner giggles.
Adelene Dawner: Okay. Bedtime for little lions. See you all later/tomorrow/whatever-you-call-it.
Moon Fargis: have a good sleep :)
Fael Illyar smiles.
Moon Fargis humms cutely.
Fael Illyar: hehe :)
Fael Illyar humms cutely.
