2009.08.02 13:00 - Aspects of Love

The Guardian for this meeting was Maxine Walden. The comments are hers.

I was just returning from a few weeks away; it felt good to be back, looking forward to seeing friends, wondering how their summers had been going. It felt very nice to see old and new friends as the session evolved.  After intros,  a discussion point, introduced by Bertram, invites comments on the quote by Camus: "love between humans is generous if it is fading and unique".  And the group is off and running considering various aspects of this quote, including  the nature of its author Albert Camus.  Come read a stimulating discussion amongst thoughtful friends.  And catch the trailing discussion between two friends as they muse over evolving friendships over the years...

    Maxine Walden: hi, Pila
    Pila Mulligan: hi Maxine
    --BELL--
Pila Mulligan: I hope your vacation was fun
Maxine Walden: nice to see you
Pila Mulligan: nice to se you also
Maxine Walden: itwas thanks, was in the Baltic, amazing experiences
    Pila Mulligan: I bet
    Pila Mulligan: cold?
Maxine Walden: so muchhistory...and now everyone seems 'western'. No not cold, a pleasant 70s or so
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Maxine Walden: how have you been?
    Pila Mulligan: fine thanks
    Pila Mulligan: hi Steve
    Maxine Walden: hi Steve
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello
Pila Mulligan: I was gone involuntarily for about a week, until a few days ago due to equipment problems
    stevenaia Michinaga: (lag)
Pila Mulligan: hi Gaya and Bertram
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello everyone :)
    Maxine Walden: ah...
Bertram Jacobus: hello all ... :-)
Maxine Walden: hi, Gaya and Bertram

Gaya Ethaniel: Did you have a good break Maxine?
    Idaho Easterwood: hi
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello Idaho :)
    Maxine Walden: yes,thanks, gaya
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Bertram Jacobus: hello idaho ... :-)
    Maxine Walden: hi, Idaho.
Bertram Jacobus: take a seat if you like ;-)
Maxine Walden: Yes, Idaho, I have been away. Have you been to these meetings before?
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello Wol :)
    Pila Mulligan: hi Wol
    Idaho Easterwood: hello ol
    Maxine Walden: hi wol
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello wol
Wol Euler: hello maxine, steve, pila, gaya, bertram, idaho
Bertram Jacobus: i think idaho was not here before. she came with me ...
Bertram Jacobus: and hello wol :-)
    Pila Mulligan: welcome Idaho
    Idaho Easterwood: thanks
Maxine Walden: ah, welcome Idaho. Bertram, I expect you have told her of our chatlog and whether it is OK to include her in it.
Bertram Jacobus: no sorry. did not do that yet, but i think, it will be okay -
Idaho Easterwood: it is okay for me
    Maxine Walden: Great!
Wol Euler: ty :) we have to ask, it's in the Terms of Service
    Idaho Easterwood: no problem
Idaho Easterwood: i have nothing to hide
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Wol Euler smiles
    Bertram Jacobus: thats "a big word" (!) ... ;-)
    Pila Mulligan: hi Mick
Bertram Jacobus: hi mickorod ... :-)
Gaya Ethaniel: mm ... what service do I need to provide? :P
    Wol Euler: hello mick
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello Mickorod
    Idaho Easterwood: hi mick
    Maxine Walden: hi, Mick
    Mickorod Renard: Hi guys
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello Mick :)
    Maxine Walden: meditative silence today?
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Mickorod Renard: yea, I am trying to control the urge
Idaho Easterwood: im only guest today :)
Pila Mulligan: hi Eliza *we are still accumulating players)
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello Eliza :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: Hello Eiza
Bertram Jacobus: hello eliza ... :-)
    Maxine Walden: hi,Eliza
    Wol Euler waves
    Mickorod Renard: hi Eliza
    stevenaia Michinaga: group hug?
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Absolutely! { }
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Bertram Jacobus: i have a topic - spoke with idaho before about it, a sentence in her profile, from albertcamus : "love between humans is only generous, if it´s fading and unique" - i find it not correct - what do you mean, please ? :-)
    Wol Euler grins.
    Mickorod Renard: ;-)
Eliza Madrigal: Welcome back Maxine :)
Maxine Walden: thanks, Eliza, it is good to be back
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Maxine Walden: care to say more, Bertram?
stevenaia Michinaga: shouldn't we be asking Camus?
    Wol Euler looks around.
Bertram Jacobus: yes : my idea is that relations between people always are " fading and unique" and so the sentence has not really an information in my oppinion
    --BELL--
Idaho Easterwood: do you really think that every relationship is both?
Idaho Easterwood: it would be great but i think its not fact
Gaya Ethaniel: Depend what love refers to here I think.
Bertram Jacobus: yes. i think so. and even not only relations but all relative aspects, relations and things
Pila Mulligan: relations between people may seem to be "fading and unique" because things change, so generous love needs to be adaptable and not static or stuck at one place
    Maxine Walden: interesting thoughts...
Gaya Ethaniel nods. True ... people change hence also relationships ...
Eliza Madrigal: yes, flexiblity seems vitality
stevenaia Michinaga: fading infers relative time, unique can be for each absolute moment
    Eliza Madrigal: Nice, Steve
    Pila Mulligan: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: one fade,... one million unique points of reference
Mickorod Renard: I think firstly one should remember Camus was I think a philandroper in sexual appetite
Gaya Ethaniel: But I'm not so sure about love being flexible ... maybe how to express love can be flexible?
    Mickorod Renard: philand,,,whatever
Maxine Walden: so many interesting perspectives in our conversation, it seems to me
stevenaia Michinaga: love is flexible, like a bubble, grows and shrinks with time
    Gaya Ethaniel listens.
stevenaia Michinaga: or perhaps it is constant but adapts to ecternal influences
stevenaia Michinaga: bubbles stay the same size, until they pop
    stevenaia Michinaga: or not
Eliza Madrigal finds it difficult to make a distinction there, Gaya... when we are flexible then I think we experience love in many ways? Many bubbles? hehe
Pila Mulligan: love is like sunlight, sometimes we only see it shining through clouds
    Gaya Ethaniel thinks :)
Eliza Madrigal tries to shake pat benetar out of her mind
    Bertram Jacobus: lol eliza :o)
stevenaia Michinaga: that may have helped you Eliza, now the rest of us beging hearing it
Eliza Madrigal: hahaha, sharing the wealth
Idaho Easterwood: i think love is like a ghost
    Wol Euler: oooh
Idaho Easterwood: its the thing that two people are surrounded of
Pila Mulligan: I suppose the next metaphor after sunlight and clouds is sometimes we only see it reflected from the moon :)
Idaho Easterwood: not a bad ghost
Mickorod Renard: he may be refering to his relationship with simone b and that was a waning situation,,perhaps he felt the loss of her love
Mickorod Renard: I am sure its personal and complex in an individual way
Bertram Jacobus: nice idea mick ... sounds good to me ... hm -
    Mickorod Renard: ;)
Mickorod Renard: but i may be wrong
    Bertram Jacobus: yes :-)
Idaho Easterwood: but do you think that love is allways genrous?
    Mickorod Renard: he he
Eliza Madrigal: Yes, I think the nature of love is generous
    Pila Mulligan: generous means giving?
Maxine Walden: we each seem to be bringing our own thoughts about love, flexibility, generosity to the conversation and set aswirl each other's thoughts, musings about this wide-ranging topic...
Mickorod Renard: I think it may be generous but perhaps not conciously
Gaya Ethaniel: When I think about love ... most recent thing I think of is mature Fitzgerald singing to/with sparkling sounds of Bass' guitar ... both really really listening and open, not complacent.
Wol Euler fails to see the connection between generosity and either uniqueness or fading
Gaya Ethaniel: Generosity of not putting oneself in the way maybe ... not sure though.
Mickorod Renard: Wol,,this was what my bit was refering to
    Wol Euler nods.
    Mickorod Renard: fading and uniqueness
Mickorod Renard: I think he was generous with his love,,he he ,,and then when he lost simone,,maybe he saw it fading
    Mickorod Renard: lol
Gaya Ethaniel keeps looking around for cobbled paths and Camus :)
Eliza Madrigal: Nice to meet you, btw, Idaho
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Mickorod Renard: yes,,hello idaho
Gaya Ethaniel: Yes welcome to PlayasBeing Idaho :)
stevenaia Michinaga: careful which quotes you bring
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
    Mickorod Renard: grin
    --BELL--
    Idaho Easterwood: what?
Gaya Ethaniel: We keep mostly silent for 90 secs at 15 minute intervals Idaho :)
Idaho Easterwood: chat came too late
    Idaho Easterwood: sorry
Gaya Ethaniel: ahhh np that happens.
    Eliza Madrigal: yup
Bertram Jacobus: i would like to repeat my question or modify it a bit : do you think, the sentence is "correct" as it is written ? ("love between humans is only generous, if it´s fading and unique")
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Pila Mulligan: it is poetic and suggests and insight, correct may be difficult to evaluate though
    Pila Mulligan: an insight*
Eliza Madrigal has a difficult time with 'correct' in a context like this one
    Pila Mulligan: hi arabella
Bertram Jacobus: hi arabella ... :-)
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Ara :)
    Mickorod Renard: Hi Ara
    Idaho Easterwood: hello arabella
    Gaya Ethaniel: Hello arabella :)
    arabella Ella: hiya
    Maxine Walden: hi, arabella
    Wol Euler: hello ara
Bertram Jacobus: i agree with you pila and eliza, but couldn´t it be interesting, although if it may be "difficut", to find out, if this sentence has ... some things to say ... sorry - may be i´m to affected ? ;-)
Mickorod Renard: maybe it was to raise this question, yet never reach an answer
Bertram Jacobus: another nice thougt mick ... :o)
Gaya Ethaniel: How do you read it Bertram?
Mickorod Renard: yeaaa,,the aswer please Bert
    Mickorod Renard: answer*
Bertram Jacobus: i read it literally - at least also - and there it is not right to me
Eliza Madrigal: Quotes are snapshots, which sometimes resonate ?
Gaya Ethaniel: mm ... how would you 'correct' the sentence Bertram?
Mickorod Renard: sit down Ara,,ur makin me feel nervous
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Bertram Jacobus: i would say : relations between humans always are fading and unique and love always is generous
arabella Ella: oh sorry i had not noticed i am still standing :)
    Wol Euler: :)
Eliza Madrigal: That's a nice rearrangement Bert
arabella Ella feels a bit distracted and is trying to recall camus :)
Gaya Ethaniel: You know Bertram ... for me both sound same :)
    Idaho Easterwood: relations SHOULD be
arabella Ella: dont we have to take the quote in the light of what camus wrote and his ideas?
Gaya Ethaniel: Please say more arabella.
Bertram Jacobus: no gaya : camus uses this little word "if" - and that makes it very ... strange to me - but ok : was already said, too, poetic one could say may be too ... ;-9
Eliza Madrigal: Yes, Mick brought that up also Ara. I think quotes can be taken either way really... as in context or out
arabella Ella: of if i recall camus wrote the myth of sisiphus
Eliza Madrigal: Always helpful/nice to know the background too though
    Wol Euler: right :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
arabella Ella: about rolling up a stone up a mountain for ever with it continually falling down again - a bit about his sense of futility in life
Gaya Ethaniel: I read 'if' as 'though' 'even if' ... did I read it correct?
    Eliza Madrigal: yes :)
arabella Ella: he was an algerian
arabella Ella: wrote some existentialist plays ... drama
    Gaya Ethaniel: Good ty :)
arabella Ella: same type of philosophy as jean paul sartre
    Wol Euler whispers: http://dbanach.com/sisyphus.htm
arabella Ella: existentialism attempted to move towards the application and practice of philosophy
arabella Ella: and the absurdity of life (as they called it)
arabella Ella: (sometimes called philosophy of the absurd)
Mickorod Renard: he was into niechtie or whatever his name was
arabella Ella: (lots of other dramatic plays on these topics)
arabella Ella: (also samuel beckett for example)
arabella Ella: (waiting for Godot for example)
Bertram Jacobus: no gaya - i think he meant really "if" - but i can be wrog, naturally (always) ... :-)
arabella Ella wonders why she is using brackets
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    arabella Ella: :)
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
    Pila Mulligan: (:)
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Eliza Madrigal: Is that a clam , PIla?
    arabella Ella: ROFL
    Bertram Jacobus: nietzsche
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
    Mickorod Renard: ty
Mickorod Renard: anyway,,I often wonder what love is
Mickorod Renard: I think its a word
arabella Ella: easy answer to that Mick
    arabella Ella: contradictions
stevenaia Michinaga: you know when you have it
arabella Ella: love is a many splendored thing
    arabella Ella: and love hurts
Pila Mulligan: 'love is a rose, but you better not pick it ...'
    --BELL--
    stevenaia Michinaga: yeah yeah
Gaya Ethaniel: wow I'm smiling and giggling a lot today.
Bertram Jacobus: i like the traditional greek differentiation : eros, philia, agape. we call all those "love" - there something is mixed up then often
    Wol Euler nods
Idaho Easterwood thinks that love is the feeling of beeing part of something very special
arabella Ella: well camus was also greatly influenced by ancient greek stories which he sometimes adapted like sisiphus
Bertram Jacobus: i can agree to that idaho ... :-)
Eliza Madrigal thinks the Samuel Beckett videos are worth seeing even though many actors feel the plays should never been filmed (an aside)
Maxine Walden: perhaps when it comes to love, which pulls at so many heart and mind strings in us all, we each have our own way to approach, discuss, try to become clear...perhaps in part because it is painful to reside in the unknown in this (or any emotional) area
Mickorod Renard: I like that too idaho
    Mickorod Renard: thats deep Maxine
Gaya Ethaniel: Maxine, could you say more about 'unknown' in your sentence please?
    Eliza Madrigal: Yes, Maxine.
stevenaia Michinaga: do you mean having love and not not knowing what it is (unknown?)
Maxine Walden: Hard to feel we do not know or cannot be sure when it comes to intense or passionate emotion...
    Eliza Madrigal nods
Maxine Walden: I find that it is difficult to have a strong feeling or passion and not to be able to fully understand or often put words to it...to be swept by feeling without the full language to contain it can be exciting, but also unsettling at times
Gaya Ethaniel nods ... twofold I guess ... not reconciling with the existence of unkonwn and the intensity of feelings clouding judgement.
    Eliza Madrigal nods
Maxine Walden: part of what may be 'unknown' is not to have the language or concept to contain the feeling/experience/passion...
Gaya Ethaniel: Yes ... true ... it' can also quite pleasurable.
arabella Ella: perhaps in love we think we can reconcile the instinctive emotions with the rational logical mind ... and perhaps it is impossible?
Eliza Madrigal: And if we try to pin it down too hard, what happens
Gaya Ethaniel: The 'heartache' I guess.
Maxine Walden: it may be difficult to just let it be, to proceed in a 'not knowing' way, and yet that is probably the wisest way to go
Mickorod Renard: love is also a funny thing,,I give my love freely and without a need for reward,,yet I have felt bad when I have felt that someone has took advantage of that , which wud imply that I gave it with strings
    Gaya Ethaniel nods.
Eliza Madrigal: And if we come up with a measurement, do we then use that in some ways?
Eliza Madrigal: And if we use it like that, is it love?
Gaya Ethaniel: Not sure Eliza but ... that's not letting it be maybe.
arabella Ella: i think we tend to confuse family or parental love with relationship love
arabella Ella: and the later ... love in relationships ... we confuse with sex
    Wol Euler nods
arabella Ella: and ... we also tend to be quite conditioned ... not all of us mind you ... by idealistic romances and fairy tales
Bertram Jacobus: that would be the mixin up of eros and philia. yes ara
Mickorod Renard: sometimes,,but even with my lad I sometimes get brassed off when I give my all and get grief back,,so it crosses the two
Eliza Madrigal: You get angry at the behavior Mick, but you still love
Eliza Madrigal: the love isn't conditional
    Eliza Madrigal: in that way
Mickorod Renard: yes, the love contins.
Idaho Easterwood: but i think that is the point....life is not idealistic or a fairy
    arabella Ella nods
arabella Ella: and more confusion ensues when
Gaya Ethaniel: It's difficult to cope with parental expectations however sutble.
arabella Ella: we feel what we call 'chemistry' with someone else
Eliza Madrigal: And we put silly boundaries on things sometimes. Ie "We can't be together therefore I don't love you anymore"
Eliza Madrigal: It isn't the same thing
arabella Ella: the excitement that is aroused and beyond our rational countrol
Maxine Walden: I have to go to another meeting so will say 'goodbye' to this very interesting conversation. Bye for now
    Maxine Walden: bye all
Eliza Madrigal: Bye Maxine, nice to see you
    Gaya Ethaniel: Bye Maxine :)
    arabella Ella: bye maxine
    Bertram Jacobus: bye maxine :-)
    Idaho Easterwood: bye max
Mickorod Renard: isnt it said that love transcendes all,,or have i misquoted?
Wol Euler: bye maxine, thank you. it was good to seey ou again.
    Mickorod Renard: bye Max
stevenaia Michinaga: good to see you again
Eliza Madrigal: I need to go also, but thanks guys :)
Gaya Ethaniel: I need to go as well, thanks for the conversation :)
    arabella Ella: bye Gaya
    Mickorod Renard: bye and bye
    Idaho Easterwood: bye gaya
Bertram Jacobus: yes mick, but that is the agape type of love in my opinion
Wol Euler: bye gayabunny, take care
    Gaya Ethaniel: Bye :)
arabella Ella: i think love MAY transcend all but in this world nothing is static ... there is continuous flux and change
stevenaia Michinaga: I must be off, see youa t 7:00 pm :)
Bertram Jacobus: bye eliza and gaya
    arabella Ella: bye steve
    Mickorod Renard: bye steve
Wol Euler: bye steve, take care
Mickorod Renard: I will have to go in a mom
    --BELL--
Bertram Jacobus: then bye steve and mick
    Wol Euler: bye mick
Wol Euler: glad you waited :)
    Idaho Easterwood: bye mick
Bertram Jacobus: may be he´s already gone ? ;o)
Mickorod Renard: I cant find my next tp
    Mickorod Renard: eeek
    Wol Euler: :)
Bertram Jacobus: ah. no . :o)
Pila Mulligan: bye Mick, and to everyone that left (while i was away googling:)
    Mickorod Renard: bye pila
    arabella Ella: bye pils
    Idaho Easterwood: bye pila
Bertram Jacobus: what did you google pila ? may i ask ?
Pila Mulligan: ahh, misunderstood -- I was staying :)
Pila Mulligan: I rememebred a new york times artcile that was interesting, on how people spend their time each day
Mickorod Renard: he he ..ok I am going now,,bye
Pila Mulligan: trying to find it
    Pila Mulligan: bye Mick
    Wol Euler: mmmm?
Idaho Easterwood: was very interesting to be here
Bertram Jacobus: ah okay ... what were the intersting points ? do you still know some ? :-)
arabella Ella: i must go now too
arabella Ella: bye all and great to see you back Wol :)
Bertram Jacobus: i´m glad that you like(d) it idaho ! :-)
Wol Euler: I'm glad you came, Idaho. Take a landmark so you can find us again
    Pila Mulligan: bye arabella
Wol Euler: thanks ara, take care.
    Bertram Jacobus: bye ara
Idaho Easterwood: just did it wol
    Wol Euler: :)
Pila Mulligan: well, Bertram, they made a nice graph, from 4 am to midnite, showing what people (in varying groups) were doing at each moment
    Pila Mulligan: eating, working, etc
    Pila Mulligan: basedon a survey
    Bertram Jacobus: i see ... okay ... hm :-)
Wol Euler: did it include staring out the window or scratching at an itch?
    Wol Euler: (sorry)
    Pila Mulligan: yep :)
    Wol Euler: good! :)
    Bertram Jacobus: giggles a bit ... :-)
Idaho Easterwood: clean the kitchen after man and childeren came home? lol
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: well, most lives are preoccupied with the mundane
Bertram Jacobus: should be included i guess -
Pila Mulligan: this chart showed it nicely in detail
    Bertram Jacobus: yes
Pila Mulligan: Wol, i've enjoyed reading about parts of your journey
Wol Euler: ah, thank you :)
Bertram Jacobus: okay - i´ll leave now too. thanks for the nice talk, also about "our sentence" ! ... :-)
Pila Mulligan: it sounds very interesting
Wol Euler: it's been tricky writing about that...
    Pila Mulligan: bye Gertram
    Pila Mulligan: B*
Wol Euler: bye bertram, take care. It was an interesting conversation
    Pila Mulligan: yes, it was
Bertram Jacobus: i always appreciate it here very much
    Wol Euler: :)
Pila Mulligan: Wol just returned from a journey around the world to attend the real life weeding of a coupole from SL
    Wol Euler: indeed :)
    Pila Mulligan: wedding*
Wol Euler: it was great fun, and quite a wonderfully strange experience
Wol Euler: meeting old friends for the first time :)
Pila Mulligan: I can only imiagine
    Idaho Easterwood: sounds great
Pila Mulligan: having never met anyone form SL
    Pila Mulligan: in RL
Wol Euler: I hadn't before, but I had met blogging buddies in RL so I was prepared to some extent.
Wol Euler: we were just like ourselves :)
Pila Mulligan: Paradise has done some musical events in rl with SL musicians
Pila Mulligan: she said the same
Pila Mulligan: not much difference, really
Wol Euler: within a half hour or so, the surprise of the RL body faded, it became just anohter avatar.
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Wol Euler nods
Pila Mulligan: so how do we make such a realistic connection then through a cartoon?
Pila Mulligan: reminds me of Plato's Cave
Wol Euler: oh but we don't, Pila. We make a realistic connection to a personality through the words and ideas and style of speech
Pila Mulligan: true, was the connection with the blogging buddies the same then?
Wol Euler: which is why meeting them is no great surprise: we know them very well already.
Pila Mulligan: comparable to the SL connection?
Wol Euler: yes, very similar. We remarked on how much like our blogging personas we were.
Pila Mulligan: so the cartoon is not really much of an addition to the relationship part
    --BELL--
Wol Euler: I started to agree, but ended up disagreeing slightly
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: (hi Hades, welcome to the 90 second silence)
Wol Euler: (bye idaho, take care; hello hades)
Idaho Easterwood: (goodbye and take care)
Pila Mulligan: bye Idaho, nice to meet you
    Pila Mulligan: bye Hades
Pila Mulligan: well, Wol, can you refine the element of the SL visual?
Pila Mulligan: how it affects the relationship?
Wol Euler: mmmm yes, let me recover my thoughts, I had a brain fart during the pause and lost them
Wol Euler: right, so, the difference that the avatar makes is that it is a -chosen- appearance, we decided to look this way
Wol Euler: with a greater or lesser investment of time and effort and money
Wol Euler: so one may assume that it says something pretty significant to and about us, on some level
Pila Mulligan: so it is an additional nuance of personality
    Pila Mulligan: I agree
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Pila Mulligan: like words and ideas and style of speech
    Wol Euler: right
    Pila Mulligan: hmm, cosmic :)
    Pila Mulligan: it really is
Wol Euler: our RL bodies are not as significant because they are largely chance structures, and scarcely modifiable
Pila Mulligan: just what I was thinking
Wol Euler: but one may assume that every pixel of an avatar has been considered
Pila Mulligan: what a small role the body plays
    Wol Euler: right
Wol Euler: at least, that is what SL teaches us :)
Pila Mulligan: in terms of getting to know people
Pila Mulligan: however, I have also heard the body may cause confusion - we may meet someone in SL we would ont meet in RL due to appearance
    Wol Euler: right.
    Pila Mulligan: interesting indeed
Wol Euler: the happy couple of the wedding is the perfect example.
    Pila Mulligan: ... ?
Wol Euler: one partner is a tenured university professor, 44 yrs old, short-haired, soberly dressed.
Wol Euler: the other is 31, a college drop-out, musician and DJ and producer of local bands
Pila Mulligan: how close did they live to each othe rin RL, befroe meeting?
Wol Euler: even had they sat side by side on an airplane, the chance of their really "meeting" is zero.
    Wol Euler: several hundred miles.
    Pila Mulligan: in Canada?
Wol Euler: both in the US, east coast and the Midwest.
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: so their destiny really appeared via SL, then
Wol Euler: they could only have met here, or in some place like this.
    Pila Mulligan: yep
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
    Pila Mulligan: how very interesting
Pila Mulligan: the new dharma -- geek world
    Pila Mulligan: new sangha too
Wol Euler smiles happily. It was a marvellous time and a wonderful event. Thanks to SL.
Pila Mulligan: narture's law being adjusted by high tech
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Pila Mulligan: were many people there from SL also
Wol Euler: yes, the DJ runs a club in SL too :) there were over a dozen of us from the club, plus a half-dozen of their RL friends
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: so SL outnumbered RL :)
    Wol Euler: oh yes :)
Pila Mulligan: ten years ago a freind here met someone viw a web chat site and they married -- Texas to hawaii for her
Pila Mulligan: I thought it was very odd a tthe time
    Wol Euler: :)
    Wol Euler: and now=
    Wol Euler: ?
Pila Mulligan: now it is not :)
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Pila Mulligan: they are quite happy, have a child
Wol Euler: my mother expressed concern that I would do something so strange and "dangerous" as this :)
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: it must seem both to her
Wol Euler: "but you don't know them at all". Wrong.......
Wol Euler: well, she has the elderly non-internet-user's view of the intertubes. It's all porn and child molesters to her.
Wol Euler: because that's what she hears about.
Pila Mulligan: we are accustomed to putting great stock in the material aspect of life
Pila Mulligan: so she, like me, would see it as odd too
    Pila Mulligan: at first
    Wol Euler: definitely.
Pila Mulligan: this fellow was a Vietnam vet, also had a bad marriage after that, was pretty confirmed as a dirty old man (not really, but in the sense of ebing alone)
Pila Mulligan: now he has a young son :)
    Wol Euler smiles
Pila Mulligan: did you see the pavaillion Nymf made on my land?
Pila Mulligan: like a fairy palace
Wol Euler: only from afar, the huge tree-structure?
Pila Mulligan: yes, it is really nice
Wol Euler: I haven't been in SL much, far too busy at work :(
    --BELL--
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Wol Euler: I'll check it out tomorrow evening.
Pila Mulligan: cacthing up with work?
Wol Euler: moving! the office moved this weekend (two hours ago) to new premises.
Pila Mulligan: oh, big deal :)
Pila Mulligan: moves for businesses are complex
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: could have been worse. I'm really tired and bruised up and down my arms
Pila Mulligan: was the distance far?
Wol Euler: nah, only about two miles
Wol Euler: but with a substantial uphill component :)
Pila Mulligan: I rememebr moving a largre law office that distance -- too many boxes
Pila Mulligan: a legal aid office, actually
Pila Mulligan: about 15 employees and a zillion file cabinets
Wol Euler: ah, yes, I remember you talking about doing legal aid.
Wol Euler: we have less paperwork, but probably many more enormously boxes of samples of ceramic tile :)
    Wol Euler: enormously heavy*
    Pila Mulligan: heavty
    Pila Mulligan: -t*
    Wol Euler: :)
Pila Mulligan: well, maybe a hot bath is in order for Wol
Pila Mulligan: rest the weary body
Wol Euler: I would love a day off. I've been on duty for 14 days straight, since I got off the plane.
Pila Mulligan: can you take a day off?
    Wol Euler: midweek, perhaps.
Pila Mulligan: ah, a well-earned break
Wol Euler: I'm the technogeek, so I need to be on hand until we are sure that everything reallly is working properly.
    Pila Mulligan: yep
Pila Mulligan: i rememebr several months that it took to settle the law office mentally after the move, also
    Wol Euler nods
    Pila Mulligan: re-nesting
    Wol Euler: brb
Pila Mulligan: I was wishing for a technogeek last week, after a major crash of my office system -- and then both of the back-up machines also -- it was an almost metaphysical disaster in timing
    Wol Euler: eeeep
    Pila Mulligan: really
Pila Mulligan: Pila was stressed :)
Wol Euler: sounds like an electrical fault, actually, if all the machines died so close together
Pila Mulligan: I tihnk it was demonic possesion :)
    Wol Euler: heheheheheh
Wol Euler: perhaps the same thing under a different label.
Pila Mulligan: I built them all in the 1990s
Pila Mulligan: back then I was geeky wnuf to do that
    Pila Mulligan: W2k
    Wol Euler: :)
Pila Mulligan: but I had to change the office system to XP a few motnhs ago
Wol Euler: "party like it's 1999"
    Pila Mulligan: yeo
Pila Mulligan: so I kept w2k,a nd added linux - a triple booth sysem
    Pila Mulligan: I was proud
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Pila Mulligan: then the w2k disk went south
Pila Mulligan: and took the whole boot system with it
Pila Mulligan: and I was holding nothing
    Wol Euler: wow
Pila Mulligan: so I tried the other two systems and within two days they both crashed
    Wol Euler: O.O
Pila Mulligan: I finally got XP running again
    Pila Mulligan: not linux yet
Pila Mulligan: and am trting to figure uot to do about the bhackups
Pila Mulligan: have you run Windows on linux?
    Wol Euler: nope
Pila Mulligan: or is it a bad time for tech quesitons
Wol Euler: I'm a Mac user, it's easy for us :)
Pila Mulligan: ah, an idea for sure
Pila Mulligan: I am cnosidering anything
Wol Euler: I have doubly redundant external hard disk backups, and also copies on DVD as projects finish up
    Wol Euler: stored off-site :)
    Wol Euler <- paranoid.
Pila Mulligan: yes, I had no problem with data, having similar set upds with NAS
Pila Mulligan: the data survivied, the system didnt
Wol Euler: that is the important part.
Pila Mulligan: double redundancy was a previously hard learned lesson :)
Wol Euler: the value of the data outweighs the value of hte hardware within a few days of you beginning to use a computer system
Pila Mulligan: hence the two back up systems
    Pila Mulligan: yes indeed
Pila Mulligan: the network attached storage devices are really life savers
Wol Euler: I use "dumb drives", a client of mine got burned on an intelligent drive that lost its brain and refused to give back the data
Pila Mulligan: my first NAS is raid, the second is not, they are in different places phsycially, so hopefully somehting will survivie anything
    --BELL--
Pila Mulligan: three spearte disks all with the same data
    Wol Euler nods.
    Pila Mulligan: (fingers crossed) :)
    Wol Euler: that sounds safe.
Pila Mulligan: my first expereince with this was 20 years ago as i was finishing a supreme court broef dure in two days
Pila Mulligan: with one systema nd one disk drive
Pila Mulligan: and the system crashed
    Pila Mulligan: what a nightmare
    Wol Euler: eeeeep
Pila Mulligan: a lawyer frined had it happend about then, too, and he literally walked away fomr his law office and got a job as agovernment lawyer
Pila Mulligan: Wol, I have this feeling you may need some sleep? :)
    Wol Euler: heheh
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Wol Euler: you are right. thank you :)
Pila Mulligan: nice to chat wiht you, but ...
Wol Euler: goodnight pila, take care, be happy. make backups.
Pila Mulligan: thanks Wol, bye for now -- aloha
    Wol Euler: aloha, pila.
