I was just returning from a few weeks away; it felt good to be back, looking forward to seeing friends, wondering how their summers had been going. It felt very nice to see old and new friends as the session evolved.  After intros,  a discussion point, introduced by Bertram, invites comments on the quote by Camus: "love between humans is generous if it is fading and unique".  And the group is off and running considering various aspects of this quote, including  the nature of its author Albert Camus.  Come read a stimulating discussion amongst thoughtful friends.  And catch the trailing discussion between two friends as they muse over evolving friendships over the years...

Wol Euler: even had they sat side by side on an airplane, the chance of their really "meeting" is zero.
Wol Euler: several hundred miles.

Wol Euler: both in the US, east coast and the Midwest.

Pila Mulligan: a legal aid office, actually
Pila Mulligan: about 15 employees and a zillion file cabinets

Wol Euler: we have less paperwork, but probably many more enormously boxes of samples of ceramic tile :)

Pila Mulligan: I was wishing for a technogeek last week, after a major crash of my office system -- and then both of the back-up machines also -- it was an almost metaphysical disaster in timing

Wol Euler: sounds like an electrical fault, actually, if all the machines died so close together

Pila Mulligan: and took the whole boot system with it

Pila Mulligan: so I tried the other two systems and within two days they both crashed
Wol Euler: O.O
Pila Mulligan: I finally got XP running again
Pila Mulligan: not linux yet
Pila Mulligan: and am trting to figure uot to do about the bhackups

Pila Mulligan: or is it a bad time for tech quesitons
Wol Euler: I'm a Mac user, it's easy for us :)

Wol Euler: I have doubly redundant external hard disk backups, and also copies on DVD as projects finish up

Pila Mulligan: yes, I had no problem with data, having similar set upds with NAS
Pila Mulligan: the data survivied, the system didnt
Wol Euler: that is the important part.
Pila Mulligan: double redundancy was a previously hard learned lesson :)
Wol Euler: the value of the data outweighs the value of hte hardware within a few days of you beginning to use a computer system
Pila Mulligan: hence the two back up systems
Pila Mulligan: yes indeed
Pila Mulligan: the network attached storage devices are really life savers
Wol Euler: I use "dumb drives", a client of mine got burned on an intelligent drive that lost its brain and refused to give back the data
Pila Mulligan: my first NAS is raid, the second is not, they are in different places phsycially, so hopefully somehting will survivie anything
