2010.01.17 08:00 - Guardian Session: Sticking to the Topic

Our weekly guardian session was attended by 11 guardians:  Arabella, Eden, Eliza, Eos, Genesis, Liza, Maxine, Riddle, Storm, Wol, and Zen. Eliza posted this session with comments. :)

This session centered around posting/personalizing chat logs, scribes, the idea of a village cafe', a determination to gather in the pub, and Second Life demographics.

Eliza Madrigal: Well, Thanks Wol for posting quite a few sessions in the last few days....

Eliza Madrigal: easy for guardians to fall bahind but really important to keep up if we can, especially since we have two new scribes starting.. Vendy and Geoff :)

Zen Arado: rather let the chat speak for itself ..do you see waht I mean?

Storm Nordwind: I think it's possible to peronalize without being judgmental

Eliza Madrigal: Some logs speak for themselves, and some miss long pauses or something that makes the log seem different than the meeting...
Eliza Madrigal: but your point is well taken, Zen
Maxine Walden: and somehow I think the reader of the chatlog appreciates the 'organization' of the commentator, his/her point of view
Riddle Sideways: we understand the feeling
Wol Euler: agreed

Storm Nordwind: It's nice to feel a human hand on the tiller when reading a log. More warm and inviting maybe.
Zen Arado: ok
Eden Haiku: yes, I agree
Maxine Walden: but there is that inner voice, which I know well, which says 'who do you think you are to comment on the log?' That inner voice of self derision

Storm Nordwind: We are human beings, Maxine, expressing the delight we have in talking with friends :)
Zen Arado: I am amazed at how much I miss of the actual meeting when I read the log

Eden Haiku: I feel it is such a privilege to be able to comment, I try to epress 'the feeling' of the session the best way I can.
Eliza Madrigal: yes, that's how I feel too Eden... also maybe why it doesn't feel burdensome. It is play :) Celebration, in a sense
Riddle Sideways: needs to not correct too many of the typos, there are often the best part of chat
Eliza Madrigal: haha, yes

Storm draws attention to the trickiness of Scribing...

Storm Nordwind: In a way, the scribe's job is far more difficult, especially if they take on what has become the current style of seleecting excerpts. What to select? What to leave out?
Eliza Madrigal: Yes!!
Eden Haiku: I read the chat logs a lot, and I enjoy them, espaceillay when there are comments.
Maxine Walden: good point, Storm
Eliza Madrigal often feels quite emotional leaving things out of the scribes. One hopes to give enough of a taste that readers will follow their interest
Storm Nordwind: That is why, when I did the scribe job for a while, I took an entirely different approach, of weaving a story - a fantasy - around the proceedings. But it got too much effort and it was 5 hours minimum for me to do it that way.
Zen Arado: a lot of work Storm
Eliza Madrigal: yes, that's writing a small book each time... They are lovely scribes though, nice to read over
Maxine Walden: yes, Storm, I appreciated your efforts, tho that much time can feel burdensome when you are the scribe doing it

The value of small talk...

Eden Haiku: I can get a lot of pleasure in reading the greetings: Agatha is so creative with nicknames for example..Even samll talk about the weather can be fascinating sometimes....
Storm Nordwind: It was more burdensome to others to whom I had committed time! :)
Wol Euler: heheh
Maxine Walden: yes, Eden, little gems ...

Eos Amaterasu: Sometimes the emotional quality and bonding that comes through the smalltalk is really shining
Eden Haiku: It is!
Eliza Madrigal nods
Maxine Walden: agree, Eos

Eos Amaterasu: but sometimes a block of that could go to the side in gray, also
Eos Amaterasu: there's also mutli-threaded quality to conversation that takes work to capture graphically
Maxine Walden: the spontaneity that comes into 'smalltalk' can be interesting and so much more revealing than the 'bigtalk' which can follow
Maxine Walden: not quite following, (would amend what I just said: the 'bigtalk' can be very important...just trying to emphasize the value of the spontaineity of the 'smalltalk'
Eden Haiku: Yes the freudian slips of small talk too hey Maxine? ;-)
Zen Arado: is there 'medium-sized' talk?
Eos Amaterasu: the feeling can come through, of us being together, of extra magic being there
Maxine Walden: yea, Eden, all those slips which are also nestled in the typos

Maxine Walden: the braids which are comprised of the weaving strands of thoughts are also quite wonderful

Treacle, Vocabulary, Tribes in SL ...

Storm Nordwind: Sometime it feels like a dance, free and floating. Other times it feels like wading through treacle.

Wol Euler: very thick and sticky sugar-syrup

Wol Euler: much thicker than maple syrup, it's hardly runny at all

Eos Amaterasu: I've really been charmed by reading logs of some of the European sessions I'm unable to attend
Wol Euler: I feel that way about the 7pm sessions, Eos.
Eden Haiku: It seems there are very few people from Asia or Australia in PaB?
Zen Arado: Yes...I wonder about that
Zen Arado: only Tarmel?
Eliza Madrigal: yes
Eden Haiku: I'm just aware of Pilla in Hawaii and Tarmel in Australia and Pema in Japan now.
Wol Euler: not many at all
Wol Euler: and pema only half-time
Eliza Madrigal: True, can't forget that Pema is Japanese

Eliza Madrigal: When I signed onto SL, I met quite a few Australians... so not sure
Storm Nordwind: Residents of any kind from Australia are few Eden :)
Eos Amaterasu: There's some occasional Japanese visitors (seemingly, at least)
Eden Haiku: Is thereb some sort of demographics of SL that anyone would know of? Just curious.
Eos Amaterasu: 60% non North American
Storm Nordwind: There used to me a monthly spreadsheet published by LL. They stopped doing it when their growth plateaued!
Eden Haiku: Yes, more sheep than humans , and sheep cannot attend SL yet...
Maxine Walden: sometimes I feel sheepish

Eden Haiku: Though I noticesd cats trying a kind of take over in the logs. Was happy to learn not only my cat thinks she is an alarm-clock!

We are priveleged...

Storm Nordwind: We are blessed by using what has become an international language. Some countries, notably Japanese, prefer their own language and feel uncomfortable with ours

Storm Nordwind: It also used to be tha case (no idea now) that Brazil had a huge SL subculture... again keeping itself to itself - which is perhaps why I meet so few people from Brazil here

Maxine Walden: interesting, Storm, so may be many subsets within SL that do not communicate with each other?

Eden Haiku: It is true we are lucky to be able to communicate in an international language. We are privileged.
