The Guardian for this meeting was Riddle Sideways. The comments are by Riddle Sideways.  Joined by DR42.

    Riddle Sideways: Hi DR42
                      --BELL--
DR42 Resident: 's current display-name is "Marjorie Chardin".
    Riddle Sideways: Hi Maude
    DR42 Resident: Hello
Riddle Sideways: aside: what does DR42 in your name mean?
Riddle Sideways: if not being too personal :)
DR42 Resident: DR are my RL initials and 42 is the ultimate answer (ala Hitchhikers Guide)

DR42 Resident: Any bets on when this region will be reloaded?
    Riddle Sideways: usually tomorrow
Riddle Sideways: couple years ago the restarts were Tuesday
DR42 Resident: Most of the grid is undergoing restarts today.
Riddle Sideways: then it followed this Av to wednesday
    Riddle Sideways: and stayed (mostly)
Riddle Sideways: poor Zen took over Wednesday and teh restarts
Riddle Sideways: not sure how restarts got tricked into following
    Riddle Sideways: but they did
DR42 Resident: The ways of LL are a mystery.
Riddle Sideways: yet another thing to observe and not know
Riddle Sideways: funny, there are people that things like that bother them
DR42 Resident: It does not bother me, but I wonder what the thinking that led to the situation was.
                      --BELL--
                 Another 42
DR42 Resident: I once wondered why we are limited to 42 groups, so I read the code. Found out that a programmer allocated a 65K byte packet to send the data from the server to the viewer, then only allowed 1,500 bytes (the size of an Ethernet packet) to be used. It was a simple coding error.
Riddle Sideways: remember setting packets sizes bigger
Riddle Sideways: it gums up some machines in transit and multiple packets have to be handled
Riddle Sideways: those were fun games to play on
DR42 Resident: The code allocated a single UDP datagram. The assumption of using the size of an Ethernet frame is questionable because you do not know how small that frame will be broken up when it gets to other networks on it's trip to the end user.
Riddle Sideways: Playing as Computers are Being, then doing strange things to how it thinks
Riddle Sideways: long ago a qiz kid was brought in to speak to us on ATM and small frame sizes
DR42 Resident: I was curious as to why, I don't really care that they made the error.
Riddle Sideways: well, constant framesize. Think is was in the 200 byte range
DR42 Resident: ATM "Frames" are 53 bytes.
Riddle Sideways: yes, most times it is ok not to know reasons . just that a limit exists and it is a known value
    Riddle Sideways: thanks
    Riddle Sideways: memory loss
DR42 Resident: I have that problem, too.
Riddle Sideways: well, we all compared notes after that talk
DR42 Resident: ATM frames are small so it can be used for voice traffic without latency.
Riddle Sideways: agreed the guy was probably really smart
Riddle Sideways: and none of us knew what he really was saying
Riddle Sideways: it was something about the speed of light being a limiting factor
Riddle Sideways: so they were doing predictive data setting before the real data got there
                      --BELL--
Riddle Sideways: and a fixed size meant eliminating one snippet of code to eval the size
Riddle Sideways: again, may not need to know a why or how come, just that 53 is the number

    Riddle Sideways: and yet ...
Riddle Sideways: the ones<forgotten names="" their=""> who created deep thought seems not to be completely happy with the final answer = 42
Riddle Sideways: that the answer to "Life, the universe and everything ..." was 42
Riddle Sideways: did not make them completely happy
    Riddle Sideways: satisfied

DR42 Resident: Yes, they forgot to ask Deep Thought what the question was.
Riddle Sideways: so, what are your thoughts on "what is 6 x 9"
DR42 Resident: That the basic design of the Earth was messed up since day 1.
DR42 Resident: Why else would it generate an incorrect answer?
Riddle Sideways: could be that the numerical symbol system was initialized wrong
DR42 Resident: No solution for any number base larger than 10.
Riddle Sideways: are 7 and 9 in the wrong order?
DR42 Resident: Possible, but that would not have occurred to Addams when he wrote the book.
    Riddle Sideways: or did it
Riddle Sideways: if memory is working, he writes the Arthur dialog "I always thought somethng was fundamentally wrong"

DR42 Resident: In the book, the worst poetry in the universe was attributed to someone living on the south coast of England, Vogon poetry being the third worst. In the first editions, the name of that person was Addams actual roommate at university.
DR42 Resident: Yes, messed up since day one.
DR42 Resident: Bottom line: The books will fun to read.
    DR42 Resident: Were* (stupid auto-correct)
Riddle Sideways: also that as the earth was being destroyed, one woman in Islanton (sp?) got the result
Riddle Sideways: yes, most fun read
                      --BELL--
DR42 Resident: Yes. I enjoyed the comments about they planet being filled with telephone sanitizers and beauticians.

Riddle Sideways: well, need to leave SL for some silly RL stuff
Riddle Sideways: thank you very much
    DR42 Resident: ty, be safe.
