Calvino Rabeni: How does one check whether they are muted?

Wol Euler: the list of muted people is in the view menu, about two inches down

Calvino Rabeni: No, those people were not muted

Calvino Rabeni: It might be a Viewer2 issue

Wol Euler: perhaps

Wol Euler: have you set your prefs so that IMs go to your email acct when you are offline?

Calvino Rabeni: because I can hear them in viewer 1

Wol Euler: ah, then it's pretty definite :)

Calvino Rabeni: yes, but I don't get IM's from those people either

Wol Euler: then it's definitely a v2 bug

Calvino Rabeni: So how could that be about viewer 2, if it happens when I'm not logged in?

Wol Euler: oh, wait, I misunderstood.

Wol Euler: it would be interesting to know which viewer they are using, perhaps

Calvino Rabeni: Although, I'm not sure I tested that

Wol Euler: it's worth testing, could you ask them to send you an IM at a time when you are offline?

Calvino Rabeni: because I might have been logged in when they sent the IM and I didn't se it

Calvino Rabeni: I would have to do that, yes, by prearrangement

Wol Euler: in that case it would be in the logfile on your computer's hard disk, since you do of course have local logging enabled.

Calvino Rabeni: yes, but why would it be in the logfile?

Wol Euler: if it did arrive but you didn't see it, I mean

Wol Euler: (working through the list of possibilities)

Calvino Rabeni: I see .... no it is not in the logfile either

Wol Euler: aha!

Wol Euler: so it's definitely a SL problem then.

Wol Euler: do all messages from these people go missing, or only certain ones?

Calvino Rabeni: All of them, AFAIK

Wol Euler: do random messages from other people also go missing?

Calvino Rabeni: The 1pm sessions seem most jokey usually, less serious

Calvino Rabeni: but it can't be because of the 1, since most participants aren't in SLT zone

Calvino Rabeni: I think it might be "just got off work" happy hour effect

Darren Islar: I think so too, celebrating weekend

Calvino Rabeni: not just fridays, wol, but I think, every day :)

Wol Euler: yes, the 1pms are much less serious than the 7pms, sure

Darren Islar: 1 pm sessions are different

Calvino Rabeni: I noticed, but the reason seems mysterious still

Darren Islar: to most europeans it is 9 or 10 o' clock in the evening

Calvino Rabeni: OK, so tired an punchy, or ready to bed, or already dreaming ....

Wol Euler: watching TV, or drinking beer in a bar with friends, or clubbing

Wol Euler: phone

Darren Islar: and on saturday night they do it in real life

Calvino Rabeni: forgive my cultural ignorance, but, in a "beer/bar" culture, where thats a common evening activity, then when at home instead, is there also drinking?

Darren Islar: My slots are not very well visited :))

Calvino Rabeni: Guess I'm asking, does the beer go with the club or with the time of day :)

Darren Islar: I think most poeple at weeknights are sitting in front of the telly

Darren Islar: the beer/bar thing starts at fridaynight

Darren Islar: you go out, get home and go to bed

Darren Islar: in most cases :)

Darren Islar: and you have the subcultures that live on beer

Darren Islar: but I don't think you will find those here in the group :)

Darren Islar: what do you do in the US around 9, 10 pm?

Calvino Rabeni: There are a lot of cultures and classes, it's hard to say

Wol Euler: people do drink at home, I guess, yes. There are many stores where you can buy beer (or water) by the case

Wol Euler: amusingly, I read that Germans actually drink more coffee per head than beer

Darren Islar: Americans don't do that?

Calvino Rabeni: Do what?

Darren Islar: drinking at home?

Darren Islar: with friends

Wol Euler remembers and smiles.

Zaldaan Sirnah: are there few americans here?

Zaldaan Sirnah: I'm in Los Angeles

Calvino Rabeni: I'd say, most don't, if I had to guess

Wol Euler: for certain values of "a few", yes :)

 

How much is enough?

Wol Euler: last summer, at the RL/SL wedding, we took turns making dinner for the 20 or so of us. I planned to serve wine with mine, and thought that I'd get a half-dozen bottles for 20 people.

Wol Euler: by German standards, that would be not nearly enough.

Wol Euler: the hosts told me it was far too much, and indeed only one bottle was emptied

Darren Islar: one bottle???

Wol Euler: exactly.

Darren Islar: that wouldn't have been enough here either

Darren Islar: in Holland I mean

Wol Euler: mmhmm

Darren Islar: how odd

Darren Islar: I mean different lifestyles

Wol Euler: yep

Wol Euler: most of the wedding party drank only water or soda-pop

Wol Euler: though very few refused margaritas :)

Wol Euler: heh

Darren Islar: hahaha

Darren Islar: so what did you do with the other 19 bottles?

Wol Euler: oh no, I took the advice to heart and bought only two bottles :)

Wol Euler: the second is probably still there, waiting to be consumed

Wol Euler: different strokes for different folks, as they used to say.

Darren Islar: yes, but I have a feeling about for instance the German culture

Darren Islar: but US, I apparently have no idea :)

Coffee time.

Calvino Rabeni: In western USA, there's a starbucks on every streetcorner

Darren Islar: I can imagine :)

Darren Islar: I probably would have bought 3 bottles to make sure

Darren Islar: Starbucks yes

Calvino Rabeni: (almost not an exaggeration) And there's still room for plenty of competition in that business

Zaldaan Sirnah: The crowd varies. I attended an electronics hackers group and they brought some weird liquor in a large box device (which I didn't see up close to see if that's just the way it's ordered, or if it went along with their many equipment hacks)...

Darren Islar: not a concept that works here very well

Wol Euler: the position of Starbucks on the bellcurve of coffee quality is different in Europe

Zaldaan Sirnah: An hour or two later most people had passed through that end. It seemed non-drinking was the minority.

Wol Euler: in the US, it's well above the mean; here, it's below

Calvino Rabeni: There's a lot of Do It Yourself subcultures - some like brewing and distilling

Wol Euler: home winemaking, from strange ingredients

Calvino Rabeni: A lot of binge drinking in colleges

Wol Euler: turnip and raspberry wine

Zaldaan Sirnah: A friend of mine, who ran a coffee shop, told me the coffee used by those chains was not even low grade, but the grade used for landscaping/decoration!

Calvino Rabeni: Right, or dandelion wine, or nettle (yum)

Wol Euler believes it

Zaldaan Sirnah: I pulled a dandilion and made tea of its roots one time.

Zaldaan Sirnah: dande

Darren Islar: and that is considered to be good coffee?

Calvino Rabeni: I doubt that account

Wol Euler: it's what americans grow up with.

Calvino Rabeni: No, not any more

 

A twinge of geekery.

Zaldaan Sirnah: In some coding-speak we use s/dandi/dande/ to change our spelling. :)

Wol Euler: in my childhood there'd be a coffee maker sitting in the corner of every office, they'd make a gallon in the morning and it would sit there stewing and brewing all day long

Darren Islar: I can remember an American/German movie in which the german woman says about coffee: brown wasser

Darren Islar: braun wasser - brown wather

Wol Euler: Alice in den Städten, perhaps?

Darren Islar: no it is a well known title, though the movie isn't

Calvino Rabeni: Zal, feel free to use regexes in chat here if you like :)

Wol Euler: yep, the majority would get it

Darren Islar: but they made an american sitcome out of it

Darren Islar: but I can't imagine Wol, coffee stewing and brewing all day long

Zaldaan Sirnah: perl -pi.bak -e 's/dandilion/dandelion/' `find . -name '*.txt'`

Wol Euler: it was really nasty, but that was what "coffee" was.

Darren Islar: yek!!

Zaldaan Sirnah: that one command would make a copy of every .txt file to .txt.bak, and the original would have all occurances of the word replaced in it.

Wol Euler: in small towns in out-of-the-way places, that is still the norm.

Calvino Rabeni: Sure, we *all* speak command line Perl :)

Wol Euler: *really small towns, now.

Wol Euler can read it but doesn't speak it.

Darren Islar can neither

Calvino Rabeni: Every small town in the West has at least one roadside espresso drive- through stand

Darren Islar: and that is good coffee?

Zaldaan Sirnah: Coffee, especially with sugar, tends to be bad for my skin.

 

Another visitor drops in, and immediately starts to circle around us at high speed.
