The Guardian for this meeting was Bruce Mowbray. The comments and photo are by Bruce Mowbray.
Afterthoughts (from Bruce): During this session there was much talk of things seemingly out of our control -- like global warming, sea levels rising, ice age in Europe, trucks breaking down, computer satellite connections fractured by solar flares, etc. . . . None of these, of course, exempts us from responsibility for compassion and mindfulness -- both of which, gratefully, were evident among the participants in this session.
Raffila Millgrove: hi Bruce.
Raffila Millgrove: is today the art history ... talk. ?
Bruce Mowbray: Hmmm. I don't know, Raffila.
Bruce Mowbray: Where was that supposed to be held; do you know?
Raffila Millgrove: i hope i didn't mess up on that. no .. i am shaky on the when.
Raffila Millgrove: on the weekend. lol
Raffila Millgrove: is there a board someplace with events listing?
Bruce Mowbray: Well, my computer is really acting up . . . (ever since the solar flares of last weekend...) -- so I probably missed the announcement.
Raffila Millgrove: there's never any notices from Kira Cafe.. i think i join that group hoping to get some.
Bruce Mowbray: There is a PaB board near here . . . I wish I could see this scene so I could walk you over to it now...
Raffila Millgrove: hello Adams
Bruce Mowbray: unfortunately, I cannot see anything except the stone floor.
Raffila Millgrove: oh that's right. you are having horrible computer glitches.
Bruce Mowbray: I can't even see the fountain yet.
Adams Rubble: Hello Bruce and Rafflia :)
Bruce Mowbray: Hi, Adams!
Adams Rubble: Nice to meet you Raffila
Raffila Millgrove: you too Adams. Raffi is fine.
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray: The fountain just came into view- - - Perhaps Adams knows more about the art lecture.
Adams Rubble: It seems Raffi left
Bruce Mowbray: kk. I'm still waiting for cushions to appear... so I can sit down!
Bruce Mowbray: I was able to claim the session, though.
Adams Rubble: Yes, I saw
Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
Adams Rubble: You look fine so don't worry about that
Bruce Mowbray: I can see you and I can see your blue cushion. . . but no other cushions, yet.
Bruce Mowbray: This is interesting, because I have been listening to a podcast lecture about the "making of the self...."
Raffila Millgrove: hi again. good news. met Adams Dubrovna. at Kira Cafe.. and he says the art history talk is there at Noon tomorrow.
Bruce Mowbray: and I am now feeling that there's quite a bit more to my making of the SL self because the environment is (apparently) so lacking of the normal things I depend upon for self-orientation....
Bleu Oleander: hiya :)
Raffila Millgrove: hi bleu
Bruce Mowbray: so my "self" is also lacking, if you get my point.
Adams Rubble: Hello Bleu :)
Bruce Mowbray: Hello, Bleu.
Adams Rubble: SL can be funny sometimes
Bruce Mowbray typied a whole line of chat but the system totally ignored it...
Raffila Millgrove: i just was asking about art history talk. it's tomorrow Noon at Kira Cafe.
Bruce Mowbray: Oh good! I'm glad you found it, Raffila.
Raffila Millgrove: Adams duvbrovna told me and he was.. as you see if you a member.. just sending out notice about it.. to Kira Cafe group
Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: It was good for him to be reminded :)
Adams Rubble: Hello Airam :)
Raffila Millgrove: he was on top of it already .. just stopped to tell me.
Bruce Mowbray: Hello, Airam.
Raffila Millgrove: such.. an interesting topic.. "weird copies of carnage" about statues of Union soldier.
Adams Rubble: Yes, it should be very interesting
Bleu Oleander: please excuse me ... RL is demanding my attention :)
Raffila Millgrove: totally. know nothing on it.. will learn a lot!
Bruce Mowbray 's screen just went totally blank . . .
Raffila Millgrove: oh.. bye bleu
Bruce Mowbray: Bye, Bleu.
Adams Rubble: I was just at Storm's compassion meditation
Raffila Millgrove: ah.
Adams Rubble: for the first time
Raffila Millgrove: yes it's a new thing.. he just start about a week ago or so.
Raffila Millgrove: was it good for you?
Bruce Mowbray: Please say more, Adams.
Adams Rubble: It is a nice way to focus
Bruce Mowbray: Where is he holding that meditation?
Adams Rubble: There are a series of meditations
Adams Rubble: it is all scripted
Adams Rubble: I have a landmark
Adams Rubble: It is 15 minutes before each PaB session
Raffila Millgrove: ty Adams
Adams Rubble: First you imagine a love one and some suffering they may have experienced
Adams Rubble: and wish an end to that suffering
Bruce Mowbray: Thanks for the LM.... I will check this out further.
Bruce Mowbray listens.
Adams Rubble: then onesself, someone you do not know well and someone you dislike
Adams Rubble: then finally the whole world :)
Adams Rubble: It is nicely scripted
Raffila Millgrove: he led us thru one... before he started.. it regularly.
Adams Rubble: :)
Raffila Millgrove: well received. so he decided to make regular event.
Adams Rubble: The scripting takes advantage of the SL medium
Bruce Mowbray: Do you know before which of our sessions he will be holding meditations 1,7,1,7 ?
Adams Rubble: it is scripted to go 15 minutes before each of the sessions
Adams Rubble: 4 times a day
Adams Rubble: I have a notecard too
Bruce Mowbray: Oh, I see. Thanks.
Bruce Mowbray: Please may I also have the notecard?
Bruce Mowbray: TY!
Raffila Millgrove: with the script.. he doesn't have to try to attend all sessions.
--BELL--
Adams Rubble: And while I am advertising there is more about the art history workshops at http://rci.rutgers.edu/~beetham/art_history_SL/
Adams Rubble: hehe
Bruce Mowbray: TY, Adams!
Bruce Mowbray is still waiting for cushions to appear.
Adams Rubble: awww Bruce
Bruce Mowbray: Yeah, it is a bit disconcerting. . . but also raises a lot of interesting questions about "dependent co-arising"
Raffila Millgrove: well good news on my front Bruce, the cable people came out here and fixed our connection problems.
Adams Rubble: It is funny how we get uncomfortable when things do not go right in SL
Bruce Mowbray wishes he could have cable -- but is stuck with satellite.
Bruce Mowbray: I am too rural for cable....
Raffila Millgrove: well it's not too funny to me. it usually occurs at the worst times. lol
Adams Rubble: yes Raffi
Bruce Mowbray: yes, at the worst times...
Adams Rubble: But we can hear you quite well
Bruce Mowbray: I was REALLY REALLY hoping that it would get better for this session.... but so far, no luck.
Bruce Mowbray: ty.
Raffila Millgrove: yesterday. i had this very important chat.. and i wanted to copy it... and someone called me to come quick.. and i rushed into a tp and of course crashed.. so that i lost the whole important convo.. which now.. well just gone ... wanted to log it.
Adams Rubble: Have you checked your graphics setting to make sure it is low? Sometimes that seems to set itself high
Bruce Mowbray: The thing that is going through my mind now is how my "self" in SL seems mightily dependent upon environmental factors....
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I have the graphics setting at the very lowest...
Bruce Mowbray: What's happening is that the transfer of data is at dial-up speed. . . and has been for the past week.
Raffila Millgrove: did you call to the provider? ask it anything they could do?
Adams Rubble: bummers
Bruce Mowbray: AH!!! A brown cushion just appeared!
Adams Rubble: yaaay
Adams Rubble: bull's eye
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I've talked to the ISP a few times this week.
Bruce Mowbray: I tried to sit on it but everything went grey!
Adams Rubble: you are on it
Adams Rubble: were on it
Adams Rubble: you are now in the air
Adams Rubble: still here Bruce?
Bruce Mowbray: barely.
Adams Rubble: You have been in SL a long time Raffi!
Bruce Mowbray: OK. This is throwing all my notions of "self" to the winds. . . (in SL, anyway).
Adams Rubble: you are back on the cushion :)
Bruce Mowbray: kk. Thanks. I can't see anything just now.
Bruce Mowbray listens.
Adams Rubble: If we turned gray in RL and seats suddenly disappeared we would be much more freaked out methinks
Raffila Millgrove: yes i've been here a long time.
Raffila Millgrove: i would not feel anything about "self" if this happened to me.. but I'd be so frustrated.. you're holding up Bruce.. to keep trying and staying .. calm.
Raffila Millgrove: the worst for you.. i think. is when you type.. and nothing shows up... that's mind bending.
Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: yes, especially since it usually means one has crashed or is crashing
Raffila Millgrove: several times Bruce has typed and then sat there.. seeing nothing.
Adams Rubble: oh my
Raffila Millgrove: he's really been suffering thru this.
Bruce Mowbray: Let's face it, folks, dial-up speed just doesn't work in SL. . . .
Raffila Millgrove: not to mention getting back to normal after that scary surgery. you'd hope SL would be comfort/solace.. not an additional stressor.
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray: I apologize once more for the continuing glitch. I just hope that my satellite server will get it fixed soon. (I can use the wi-fi at the public library, but that's 15 miles away and is closed at this time on Saturdays.)
Adams Rubble: Don't feel you need to apologize Bruce
Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
Adams Rubble: We certainly understand
Raffila Millgrove: gee.. no apology needed Bruce, we feel your pain.
Bruce Mowbray: Thanks. It's actually rather fascinating to note my own dependence on the technology. . . and the visuals... It's not my fault, AND I'm responsible.
Adams Rubble: yes, and feel your pain
Raffila Millgrove: we're over here.. with the truck that sustains our business.. in the hospital.. getting steadily more ominous reports from the service mgr.
Adams Rubble: and you are trying to GOC
Bruce Mowbray: frustration, actually, but perhaps frustration is also a gate. . .
Bruce Mowbray: oh dear, ominous reports?
Raffila Millgrove: we're up to .. "critical' and wondering if "terminal" is next.
Bruce Mowbray: Oh my.
Adams Rubble: fortunately there is an auto-logger to take off that pressure
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I was able to activate the auto-logger, fortunately.
Bruce Mowbray: How is it that you are "critical, "Raffila?
Raffila Millgrove: talking about the condition of the truck.
Raffila Millgrove: they are doing tests.. it's not going well.
Bruce Mowbray: The truck at the hospital?
Raffila Millgrove: we're up to.. can it be repaired.. or.. is it a goner.
Bruce Mowbray: Should I put in a Code Blue?
Raffila Millgrove: yes i am using hospital to mean.. it's in the shop..
Raffila Millgrove: lol
Bruce Mowbray: oh. Now I understand!
Raffila Millgrove: and it's not looking good.
Adams Rubble: :(
Raffila Millgrove: they are doing tests and.. the tests are costly.. and not covered under ... eventual repair.
Adams Rubble: Hello Steve :)
Raffila Millgrove: which is kinda sad....
Bruce Mowbray: Hey, Steve.
stevenaia Michinaga: waves
Raffila Millgrove: you'd think they'd include diagnostic tests as part of eventual repair fee. but i guess not.. for this very reason.. maybe beyond a repair.
Raffila Millgrove: Hi Steve.
stevenaia Michinaga: lovely day here, napped under the sun after a walk
Bruce Mowbray: Amazing weather, huh?
Adams Rubble: yes beautiful day in RL
Adams Rubble: amazing fog this morning
Raffila Millgrove: nice! Where are you Steve? we have rainstorm in L.A.
Bruce Mowbray: up to 80 (F) in southern Ohio today. . . unheard of before now.
stevenaia Michinaga: East Coast
Adams Rubble: I am East Coast too
Bruce Mowbray sends more warm weather east to Steve.
Bruce Mowbray: and also to Adams.
Adams Rubble: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: 70 now
Raffila Millgrove: aren't they worried a little bit about the plants?
Raffila Millgrove: with the unseasonable warm weather? crops etc..
stevenaia Michinaga: they are all almost in bloom
Bruce Mowbray: Daffodils are in full bloom now.
stevenaia Michinaga: yes
Bruce Mowbray: and the insects!
Adams Rubble: bzzzzzzzzz
stevenaia Michinaga: good thing this has nothing to go with climate change
Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
Raffila Millgrove: it doesn't? how do they know it's not related?
Bruce Mowbray: I can hear the frogs (we call them "peppers") every night when I go to bed. . . It is two months early for that.
stevenaia Michinaga: it;s a matter of interperating sarchasium
stevenaia Michinaga: sorry
Raffila Millgrove: ah.
Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: I meant to type "peepers" -- not peppers.
Adams Rubble: Is it two months early. I heard them this morning
Adams Rubble: in the fog
Bruce Mowbray: yes! Peepers!
Adams Rubble: oh my
Adams Rubble: I have no sense of time any more
stevenaia Michinaga: my sarcasm is two months early?
Adams Rubble: hehe
Bruce Mowbray: sry.
Adams Rubble: yes Steve
stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Bruce Mowbray: Can you believe that there are still candidates for President who say that global warming is an Obama myth? (Santorum, for one.)
Raffila Millgrove: i wish. that the scientists could explain with evidence. .why Europe for example.. got a mini ice age.. which changed the climates (ever since) in places like Northern France. from quite pleasant warm.. to snow in winter etc.
Bruce Mowbray: The jet streams are out of kilter. . .
Bruce Mowbray: so some parts of the globe are experiencing the "ice age" while others (like the US) are experiencing unusual warmth.
stevenaia Michinaga: Chicago is considering planting warmer plants in preparation for warmer times ahead
Raffila Millgrove: there is no question.. that flooding the atmosphere with gasses.. etc. this can't be good. period. but. at same time.. these big shifts in climate that came before the pollution--they are still unexplained.
Bruce Mowbray: That's a worthy consideration..
Bruce Mowbray: also, folks who live along coastal areas might want to consider moving in-land.
Raffila Millgrove: the area of Nevada was once a huge lake.. and now of course desert. they have no explains for these things.. it would be so helpful to know..
--BELL--
Raffila Millgrove: at the natural history museum in Nevada, they told us they have so many boxes of dinosaur bones.. they cannot even catalogue them.. they're bombarded with bones they cannot even find storage for them, let alone figure out.. what's what.
Adams Rubble: Of course Nevada used to be in another position on the globe but has been moved along with plate tectonics
Bruce Mowbray: The evidence is quite clear that the oceans are rising. . . at an increasing rate, actually. . . Only a few inches in the past 100 years. . . but possibly a few feet in the next 100.
Bruce Mowbray: We may all be dinos before this weather cycle is done.
Raffila Millgrove: it's rising because the polar caps are melting??
Adams Rubble: Yesterday I was in the Water Works in Philadelphia which was built around 1800
Bruce Mowbray: Meanwhile, enjoy the warm spring!
Adams Rubble: they had a chart of the floods of the river there
Bruce Mowbray listens.
Adams Rubble: almost all of them were in the last 50 years
Adams Rubble: one in 1869 and not anywhere near the highest
Adams Rubble: Hello San :)
Raffila Millgrove: hi San.
Santoshima Resident: hello everyone :)
Bruce Mowbray: Hey, San!
stevenaia Michinaga: hi San
Santoshima Resident: hey and hi
Santoshima Resident: what are you talking about?
Raffila Millgrove: please excuse me. .have to take the call about the truck repair.. or the truck's demise. Laters all. Enjoy your weekend.
Bruce Mowbray: We were talking about several things, San.
Adams Rubble: bye Raffi Nice meeting you
Bruce Mowbray: Global warming. . . and dependent arising of the sense of "self"....
Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: not necessarily in that order :)
Santoshima Resident: and trucks
Bruce Mowbray: I am currently challenged by environmental factors. . . both in SL and in RL. . . so my sense of "self" is a bit challenged at the moment.
Bruce Mowbray: and trucks.... in the hospital....
Bruce Mowbray: Bye, Raffila!
Santoshima Resident: oh, bye raffi
Adams Rubble: and the east coast trucks disappearing under the rising ocean
stevenaia Michinaga: hope to make it to the Art History Workshop tomorrow, Adams, sounds interesting
Bruce Mowbray: and the Nevada trucks carting around lots of dino bones with no where to put them!
Adams Rubble: Yes it will be Steve :)
Adams Rubble: I am dressed for it:
stevenaia Michinaga: last month I had it at RL time + 3 on my calendar rather then SL time +3
Adams Rubble: time is tricky
Adams Rubble: It must be convenient to be on the west coast
Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
Santoshima Resident: yes, it makes it possible to be here without the use of postit notes
Adams Rubble: hehe
Bruce Mowbray says to himself: "Add 3. Add 3. Add 3...."
Adams Rubble: The one time I have problems is when I am telling some to meet me at my RL tome :)
Adams Rubble: fortunately they usually get confused first
Adams Rubble: time
Santoshima Resident: am sorry that I don't know ... what is the art history talk tomorrow?
Adams Rubble: easiest thing to do is go to the website: http://rci.rutgers.edu/~beetham/art_history_SL/
Bruce Mowbray: Folks, I am going to have to go. . . I've been typing things that never appear in the chat. . . (So I hope this does!)
Santoshima Resident: ok
Santoshima Resident: bye Bruce
Bruce Mowbray: I hope I'll be able to make it to the art lecture...
Adams Rubble: It is about the some of the monuments
Bruce Mowbray: Thanks everyone.
Adams Rubble: bye Bruce
Bruce Mowbray: bye for now.
Adams Rubble: Sorry about that Bruce
Santoshima Resident: i better go too ... tea needed
Adams Rubble: Yes, I need to go too
Santoshima Resident: ah, this looks very interesting, Adams
Adams Rubble: It was nice to see everyone
Santoshima Resident: see you all soon :)
Adams Rubble: bye for now
stevenaia Michinaga: pokes Adams nice website, thanksation
Adams Rubble: enjoy the sunshine Steve
stevenaia Michinaga: bye
Adams Rubble: :)
