    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    oO0Oo Resident: :)

    Bleu Oleander: nice :)
Eliza Madrigal: Nice idea... especially since we will likely have visitors for dancing

milakel Resident: stormy, nice monorail - thank you :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Eliza Madrigal noticing Bleu's feathers.... already won the hunt?
Storm Nordwind: You're welcome. I might add a small thing or two
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: crowned one :)
    Bleu Oleander: ha! Eliza
milakel Resident: the wood reminds me of the wild west train stations :)
    Bleu Oleander: not yet
    Eliza Madrigal: plumage
    Eliza Madrigal: :))

Storm Nordwind: It will be VERY obvious who has won!
Bleu Oleander: working on it though
    Eliza Madrigal: oooh
    oO0Oo Resident: :)
Eliza Madrigal: I can always wear last year's =p
    Bleu Oleander: me too
Eliza Madrigal: "oh this old thing?"
    Eliza Madrigal: heheh
    milakel Resident: not fair :P
Storm Nordwind: You can, but you won't want to. This year's is better!
milakel Resident: you should earn the new prize
Eliza Madrigal: :) I enjoy them... will certainly be participating
milakel Resident: storm, you're very productive
Bleu Oleander: stuck on #2 (will pay for clues hehe)
    Storm Nordwind laughs
Eliza Madrigal: that is part of the fun... clue and code bartering
milakel Resident: ok, got the message: "You have been added to the group."

Bleu Oleander: Storm, you're enjoying this way too much :)
    milakel Resident: ah, wrong window
    Storm Nordwind: Always do. :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Bleu Oleander: I know!
    oO0Oo Resident: :)

Eliza Madrigal: So do we have tree visions now?
    Bleu Oleander: seems so
    Bleu Oleander: coming along

    Bleu shifts shapes...

    morning session_001.png

    Eliza Madrigal: !!
    Bleu Oleander: i've been advertising
    Eliza Madrigal giggles wildly
    Eliza Madrigal: haha.... so cute
Storm Nordwind must have teleported to a garden center
Bleu Oleander: flowers and leaves ....
    oO0Oo Resident grins
    Eliza Madrigal: blooms blooming blooms
Bleu Oleander: trying to stay away from weed killer
    Bleu Oleander: haha
    Eliza Madrigal: haha
    Eliza Madrigal is unarmed
oO0Oo Resident visualises a protective barrier around your flowerness :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Storm Nordwind: HF Bleu
    Bleu Oleander: :))
    Bleu Oleander: flower power
Bleu Oleander: not quite a flower child though
Eliza Madrigal: well your presentation sparks childlike smileyness
Bleu Oleander: so deep down maybe?
Eliza Madrigal: and quite on the surface too!
    Eliza Madrigal: :))
    Bleu Oleander: haha!
Eliza Madrigal: in the middle miles and miles of sophistication ;-)
Storm Nordwind: No one say the word "prune"
    Bleu Oleander: yikes
    Eliza Madrigal: shear appreciation
    Storm Nordwind laughs
    Bleu Oleander: fresh cut
Eliza Madrigal: and wearing thorns on feet
    Bleu Oleander: haha!

    --BELL--

Eliza Madrigal: ::bows to bell ::: :)
Eliza Madrigal: interesting themes emerging lately?
    Eliza Madrigal: celebration?
    Bleu Oleander: transcendence?
    Eliza Madrigal: oh?
Bleu Oleander: saw a TED talk by J. Haidt
    Bleu Oleander: interesting
Bleu Oleander: the metaphor of the staircase
Bleu Oleander: and the many ways we climb it
    oO0Oo Resident: homo-duplex
    Bleu Oleander: yes
    milakel Resident: brb
    Eliza Madrigal: hmm

    [Referencing http://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_ha...cendence.html]

Eliza Madrigal: so the staircase in this context is awareness? or?
Bleu Oleander: yes, the feeling of connecting to a greater whole
    Bleu Oleander: self falls away
    Bleu Oleander: feeling uplifted
Eliza Madrigal: exchanging self for others :)
    Bleu Oleander: yes
    Storm Nordwind: nonduality?
Bleu Oleander: interesting that he mentioned war
Eliza Madrigal: nonduality as transcendence... yes that's interesting
    Eliza Madrigal listens
Bleu Oleander: and how ppl feel connected with cause

Storm Nordwind: The term 'hive mentality' may have got a bad press in the past
    Bleu Oleander: yes
Bleu Oleander: Bert Holldobler has spoken to our group
    Bleu Oleander: http://sols.asu.edu/people/faculty/bhoelldobler.php
Eliza Madrigal: ah, I see... transcendence in this context is like, hm, transcendence of game allowing for exchange without ownership... alive market

Eliza Madrigal: well, I haven't seen the talk yet so shouldn't say... but mind bees beginning to buzz now
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

Storm Nordwind: IIRC the speaker was using examples of spontaneous transcendence or things that happen to you (external causes) bringing it on. Is that right?
Eliza Madrigal: "spontaneous transcendence" wonderful phrase
Bleu Oleander: also mentioned way culture helps ppl achieve the state
    Storm Nordwind: Right.
Bleu Oleander: mentioned religion, drugs, dancing, nature ...
Storm Nordwind: So could there be an advantage (or disadvantage) of bringing about a transcendent state at will?
Eliza Madrigal: transcendence would seem to imply something beyond coping

Bleu Oleander: his idea is that it is an innate desire to achieve a transcendent state of conciousness
    oO0Oo Resident: military experiences
Bleu Oleander: yes, like most things ... for good or evil
Eliza Madrigal: agree there does seem to be a desire that can be awakened... I often question whether everyone has that.. or well... I think it is there but variously activated :)
    milakel Resident: yay!
    milakel Resident: see me now
Bleu Oleander: I'm reading his new book, "the righteous mind"
    Eliza Madrigal: haha
    Eliza Madrigal: Mila is activated
    Bleu Oleander: very good

    Bleu Oleander: hi Zen
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Zen :)
milakel Resident: had to kill the cache manually
    Zen Arado: Hi all
Eliza Madrigal: you are looking dapper
Eliza Madrigal: quite the crew here today
    Zen Arado: ty
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    milakel Resident: :
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    milakel Resident: ^.^

Zen Arado: like my St Pats outfit
    milakel Resident: dandy zen :)
    Eliza Madrigal: ahhh of course
    Eliza Madrigal: foppish
Bleu Oleander: extending the celebration :)
Zen Arado: don't want to take off
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Storm Nordwind reaches for a pint of Murphy's

    --BELL--

milakel Resident: *reaches for a cup of green tea*
Eliza Madrigal holds Bleu's green hand er.. leaf
Bleu Oleander is having her coffee in a green cup :)
milakel Resident: blue, you gave me an idea :)
    Bleu Oleander: great!
    Eliza Madrigal: re transcenndence:

"And the time came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
    Anaïs Nin

milakel Resident: how about a mini art of being project where we create our favorite cups in sl? :)
    Bleu Oleander: nice quote
oO0Oo Resident: Would folks like to see a 2+ minute summation of Jonathan Haidt's talk?
    Eliza Madrigal: Oh, sure
    Bleu Oleander: sure
    oO0Oo Resident: http://is.gd/l8s7Kt
    Eliza Madrigal: ty...clicking...
milakel Resident: tl;dr version is always good
milakel Resident: oh wait, i've seen this one
    Zen Arado: ty Sam

milakel Resident: i really liked cal's link to a video on vulnerability and shame
milakel Resident: also, i miss cal :)
    Bleu Oleander: ty Sam :)
milakel Resident: haven't seen him in a long time
    oO0Oo Resident: yw :)

    Eliza Madrigal: great synopsis
Eliza Madrigal: can't help but visualize staircases of dna
    oO0Oo Resident: spiral dynamics?
    Eliza Madrigal: mmm
    oO0Oo Resident: (((((meme)))))
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    oO0Oo Resident: :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Bleu Oleander: hi San
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi San :)
    oO0Oo Resident: 〜waves〜
    oO0Oo Resident: ☻/
    oO0Oo Resident: /▌
    oO0Oo Resident: / \
    Zen Arado: Hi San :)
    Storm Nordwind smiles at San
    Santoshima Resident: halo

Eliza Madrigal: agree with you Storm than hive mentality has gotten a bad rap...
Zen Arado: don't really get that video
Eliza Madrigal: imagine the layers of communication at play... some of which we know about.. small bits
Zen Arado: how can we be anything other than what we are?
Bleu Oleander: Holldobler's work is so interesting
Eliza Madrigal: do we know what we are?
    Zen Arado: no
    Santoshima Resident: and yes
oO0Oo Resident: Might be easier with the 18 minute version Zen? http://t.co/4p7pMpIY Althought maybe you meant that as well.
    Zen Arado: it's dualistic
Eliza Madrigal: what we are seems to include tendency toward opening
    Zen Arado: something transcending something

Bleu Oleander: we're having a big conference on xenophobia later this month
    Zen Arado: two of me?
    Santoshima Resident: "sigh without end"
    milakel Resident: hehe
    milakel Resident: zen :)

oO0Oo Resident: personal experience of seeming to go beyond the something we normally feel we are?
Zen Arado: the title puts me off watching it
Zen Arado: but that is still us
    Bleu Oleander: why?
    Zen Arado: it's dualistic
Eliza Madrigal is endlessly fascinated and curious by the intricate expressions humans bloom to articulate experience
Bleu Oleander: what does dualistic mean in that context?
Zen Arado: no self to transcend anyway
    Zen Arado: like two selves
Bleu Oleander: there is a perceived sense of self though
oO0Oo Resident: that is theory Zen.. I think there is some other angle that comes without theory
Zen Arado: one mundane and other religious extasy or something

Storm Nordwind: I sympathize Zen. There's a this and not-this thing, a journey from me to other-me. Missing a point in a way/
    Zen Arado: yeh
Eliza Madrigal: expressing nonduality necessitates dualities... diverse dualities which may overlap without disagreeing
Bleu Oleander: it's about dropping the sense of self
Zen Arado: also a dissatisfaction with what is here and now
Bleu Oleander: transcending the ordinary way of thinking about ourselves
Eliza Madrigal: on the contrary, I feel it often comes from joy

    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Yaku
    Bleu Oleander: hi Yaku
Zen Arado: what is 'ordinary' though?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: hey everyone
milakel Resident: *is endlessly fascinated by eliza's eloquent self* :)
Zen Arado: the ordinary is the miraculous
    Zen Arado: Hi Yaku

    --BELL--

    oO0Oo Resident: Yaku :)
Eliza Madrigal: :) gets shy & quiets down, hah
Santoshima Resident: ordinary = not embellished

Bleu Oleander: I think its a way of seeing and feeling part of a bigger whole
    Eliza Madrigal: nice San
    Eliza Madrigal nods
    Eliza Madrigal: seeing what is

Bleu Oleander: we may tend to have a kind of tunnel vision and see ourselves as separate from everything else when in reality we are part of it
Zen Arado: it seems to posit something solid that has to be transcended where I see humans as having a natural to innovate and discover ..as a constant process
    Zen Arado: desire
    Zen Arado: or urges

Eliza Madrigal: rather than a small self trying to accomplish something, a dynamic whole expressing variously diverse selves and views
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Zen Arado: small self/big self or multiple selves..why not just one changing process?
    Bleu Oleander: it is
Eliza Madrigal: that is the unique way you like to express it, Zen
Zen Arado: an ongoing process of transcending?
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Zen Arado: oh yes
Zen Arado: just expressing how I see it
    Zen Arado: my perspective
Bleu Oleander: many ways of seeing and knowing
    Zen Arado: of course
    Zen Arado: :)
Zen Arado: not saying my perspectve is the 'right' one
Eliza Madrigal: by small self I only meant to imply a sense of neediness... point re not large / small is a great one though
Zen Arado: there are as many unique perspectives as people here :)

Bleu Oleander: I think in the video he's just saying the evolution gave us a capacity for self transcendence
Eliza Madrigal: nods... that the desire to awaken, or bloom, re the Nin quote... is a natural expression?
    Bleu Oleander: yes

oO0Oo Resident can't help but be reminded of the "flower sermon"
Zen Arado: yes..I just don't like the kind of implied solidity of a self ...and then transcending to another kind of transcended state
Eliza Madrigal giggles and thinks this visual looks like flower sermon ... hehe

    morning session_003.png

Zen Arado: like two states only
    Santoshima Resident: hello mr. observerm
    Zen Arado: ordinary and transcended
Bleu Oleander: I don't think there is an implied solidity of self the way I heard it
    Eliza Madrigal greets observerm

    milakel Resident: hi, pema!
milakel Resident: er, i mean... observer
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    Bleu Oleander: hi Aph
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Aphrodite
Santoshima Resident: why? mila ... you say that often: observer has less hair
    Zen Arado: Hi Aph :)
    Yakuzza Lethecus: hi aph,obs
    Aphrodite Macbain: stopHello
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hello
Storm Nordwind: Everyone has less hair than Pema!
    Bleu Oleander: :)
oO0Oo Resident touches head and makes a squeeky clean window sound
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
milakel Resident: *not saying anything* :)

oO0Oo Resident: "the subtle [D]harma [G]ate that does not rest on words or letters" -flower sermon
    http://is.gd/C6PF5R

    Eliza Madrigal: indeed oO0Oo
Eliza Madrigal: I wonder how many of those present spent a long time discussing the way the flower was held or what color it was...hehe
    Eliza Madrigal: (laughs at self)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Zen Arado: exactly

Storm Nordwind: Where did the flower stop and the Buddha begin?

    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Zen Arado: :)

Bleu Oleander: where did the Buddha stop/begin?

    Aphrodite Macbain: at the gate
    Bleu Oleander: Aph :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)

    --BELL--

Aphrodite Macbain: Buddhism developed which concentrated on direct experience rather than on rational creeds, doctrinal scholasticism, intellectualism and analysis. Nice
    Aphrodite Macbain: way to go
Storm Nordwind: Sadly that is not always so today (or historically).
Aphrodite Macbain: no - far too much theory
oO0Oo Resident: Something akin to follow the recipe.. in order to experience the result
Aphrodite Macbain: although we cant drop it

Storm Nordwind: Oh we can drop the theory all right!
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
Eliza Madrigal: I think it is nice to see that even the diversity and intellectualization is not really other... sides of coin... without awareness of one the other gets stuck
Eliza Madrigal: well, in this case the directness may free the diversity?
Aphrodite Macbain: within the structure of theory, practice might thrive?
    Aphrodite Macbain: or vice versa?
Eliza Madrigal: yes... like a specialist might go deeply into one code... in a direct and open way
    Aphrodite Macbain: code?
Zen Arado: we need pointers, I think
Eliza Madrigal: code, pattern, art, skill
    Aphrodite Macbain: nods
    Eliza Madrigal: etc

Storm Nordwind: Where there is the realization from practise, theory falls away.
    Zen Arado: yeh like props
Eliza Madrigal: well, falls away from being hindering?
Aphrodite Macbain: They are both embedded in our brain: the rational and the emotional.
    Eliza Madrigal: light props?
    Eliza Madrigal: :) open gates

Zen Arado: how does that fit with beginner's mind?
Aphrodite Macbain: beginners mind comes first
Zen Arado: staying with no props?
    Eliza Madrigal giggling
    Aphrodite Macbain: without props
oO0Oo Resident: and first is every moment
Storm Nordwind: Realization is beyond both intellectual and emotional. Pure awareness and pure joy are beyond both.
    Aphrodite Macbain: a bare stage
Aphrodite Macbain: where are they located storm?

Bleu Oleander: begining to sound like we are all speaking in a code that only those who are familiar with phrases like "beginners mind" understand

Eliza Madrigal: :) appearance of many times and players and laughter somewhere
Storm Nordwind: I don't understand the question Aph :)
    Eliza Madrigal: ah, ty Bleu
    Zen Arado: sorry Bleu
Eliza Madrigal: that's helpful to say that
Bleu Oleander: np, just shining a light there
    Eliza Madrigal: nods
Aphrodite Macbain: Pure awareness and pure joy are beyond both. - beyond is a term that implies place. Where are they located?
Aphrodite Macbain: sorry to be so literal

Zen Arado: '“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” '
oO0Oo Resident: with enough realisation.. there ought to be ways to express to anyone (who wants to really understand).. certain teachings

Aphrodite Macbain: but we talk in metaphors
Aphrodite Macbain: and sometimes metaphors are vague and not useful
Storm Nordwind: Beyond doesn't always imply place. For example, what you said was (at the time) beyond my understanding! :)

Bleu Oleander: I think we are all teachers and students at the same time

Aphrodite Macbain: To me understanding means something dealt with by my cerebral cortex
Storm Nordwind: To use beyond like i used it was an attempt not to belittle the other experiences, that's all
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    milakel Resident: beyonce?
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
    Bleu Oleander: hehe
Aphrodite Macbain: beyond undestanding is something that is addressed by other parts of the mind
    Bleu Oleander: beyonce understanding

Eliza Madrigal: it is actually a nice point, that beginners mind is a kind of freshness and seeing things anew capacity... not losing touch with wonder of all things
    milakel Resident: :)
    Eliza Madrigal laughs
Eliza Madrigal: who run the world... hehe
    Eliza Madrigal ducks
    Bleu Oleander: ha!
    Aphrodite Macbain: ducks?
    Aphrodite Macbain: quacks?
    Eliza Madrigal: hahahah
    milakel Resident: *quacks*
    Aphrodite Macbain: snap
    Storm Nordwind: roast
    Aphrodite Macbain: confit
    oO0Oo Resident: ○o。.< QuACK > .。o○
Aphrodite Macbain: pate de foi gras

Zen Arado: 'For Zen students the most important thing is not to be dualistic. Our "original mind" includes everything within itself. It is always rich and sufficient within itself. You should not lose your self-sufficient state of mind. This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind. If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities; in the expert's mind there are few.'

Zen Arado: that whole book is available online
    Zen Arado: http://www.jefferysaunders.com/blog/...nners-mind.pdf

Aphrodite Macbain: An empty mind is an unprepared mind though and may not be able to discern things
Storm Nordwind: In the sage's mind, all is possible.
Zen Arado: depends what you mean by empty
    oO0Oo Resident: three pots?
Bleu Oleander: there goes that code again :)
Aphrodite Macbain: A full rich mind is much more handy
    Zen Arado: means open
    Zen Arado: only pointers
Aphrodite Macbain likes the concept of pointers
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    --BELL--

Aphrodite Macbain: they are not limiting but suggesting

Storm Nordwind: The mind is not itself full or rich. That is only the storehouse to which it has access. The mind is as limited or as free as you want it to be, whatever your storehouse.
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    Aphrodite Macbain: Rich= more synapses
Aphrodite Macbain: a lively mind if the child has ben stimulated in the first 3 years of its existence
Storm Nordwind uses the synapses of the internet to save him carrying too much richness around. ;-)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)))
Aphrodite Macbain: it is more receptive to new ideas because there is already a complexity that exists
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Eliza Madrigal: I think the way it connects back to the original topic and video, is that beginners mind doesn't think it knows... it is always asking in a kira way "What else is true?"

Zen Arado: a full mind may not accept anything that doesn't fit with what it knows like in the koan:
Zen Arado: Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!" "Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
Eliza Madrigal: so in this way it is peacemaking
    Eliza Madrigal: inclusive
Eliza Madrigal: and not warring against what comes up
    Eliza Madrigal reads

Zen Arado: so it's more about openness I think than being well educated or knowledgeable?
Aphrodite Macbain: hmmm not that simple in RL
    Zen Arado: or attitude
    Zen Arado: pride in learning
Aphrodite Macbain: a full rich mind is an active mind. It does however depend on what is put in it to begin with
Eliza Madrigal: beginners mind "plays well with others" in appreciation
Storm Nordwind: I don't ncessarily need a full rich mind to be happy and to be able to bring joy to others. It may help. It may hinder.

oO0Oo Resident: self limiting beliefs may be reified by confirmation bias.. filter bubble.. always wanting to confirm our doubts or opinions with evidence we don't realise is gleaned from a self selecting sensory field.
Aphrodite Macbain: My old mind seems to enjoy new stimulation, new ideas and works well especially in the morning while drinking coffee
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Zen Arado: yes Sam
    Aphrodite Macbain sips
Zen Arado: the antithesis of beginner's mind I think

Bleu Oleander: perceiving many strong "selves" expressing many different concepts ...
    Aphrodite Macbain: say more Bleu?
Storm Nordwind: Google is the antithesis of beginner's mind? ;-)
Zen Arado: actually very difficult to retain that I think
    Aphrodite Macbain: many strong selves?
Zen Arado: so easy to get locked into our favourite views
Zen Arado: or stance to the world
Aphrodite Macbain: Yes, like the concept of beginners mind
Bleu Oleander: takes a strong self concept to have strong ideas, beliefs
Zen Arado: yes that too ;)
Aphrodite Macbain: a strong ego Bleu?
    Bleu Oleander: sense of self
oO0Oo Resident: so simple the fear underneath it all
Aphrodite Macbain: or selves as you were saying
Aphrodite Macbain: what is that fear based on? a loss of self?
Bleu Oleander: without a sense of self you wouldn't know you had any thoughts at all

    morning session_004.png

Eliza Madrigal: it is a bit of a stretch but ... what if we change beginner for hive... so in the hive there is somehow awareness of the 'whole' in a way that frees each bee to its own work perhaps... and also allows for some other sort of intricate awareness
Aphrodite Macbain: nods - consciousness then
Eliza Madrigal: that no one bee owns
Aphrodite Macbain: I like that Eliza
Aphrodite Macbain: because it is complex- from the getgo
Aphrodite Macbain: we have multiple selves

    Eliza Madrigal: multihiverse
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Zen Arado: neuroscientist do not find any area of the brain that is a self...just all of it interrconnected to every other part have found
    Aphrodite Macbain: exactly
    Bleu Oleander: yes
Zen Arado: similar to beehive analogy
oO0Oo Resident: we'd like to plant a flag in everything.. simply to avoid encountering the space.. the vastness of space.. the fear resides at those boundaries
Aphrodite Macbain: but it is not simple and open; it is alrady complex in its make up
    Aphrodite Macbain: what fear 0?
    Aphrodite Macbain: what boundaries?
Eliza Madrigal: losing one's place I guess
    Zen Arado: groundlessness
    Zen Arado: the abyss ;)
