Pema wants my impressions from the retreat. This is quite tricky to sum up in such a short space of time; I had so many impressions, many of which were shared by others there. So rather than duplicate what others had said, I decided to share some things that I knew to be personal.

Pema Pera: Storm, are you going to tell us about your impressions from the retreat?

Storm Nordwind: Yes sure, now that we seem to have a settled attendance

Storm Nordwind: One thing I have to say first, is that I've haven't read anyone else's impressions as yet
Storm Nordwind: So I may repeat what others have said! :)
Storm Nordwind: The first thing I noticed is that we fitted together so well
Storm Nordwind: And I think we would have done that whether it had been a social occasion or a retreat
Storm Nordwind: It was great fun, for another thing
Storm Nordwind: And when Pema was expounding his different views of how one may approach PaB...
Storm Nordwind: (Relaxation, Therapy, Humanism, Transcendance or Radical Openness)
Storm Nordwind: I found that, in addition to those...
Storm Nordwind: there was simply the possibility of doing it (being there but also at any time)...
Storm Nordwind: for the simple motive of enjoyment!
Wol Euler: :)
Storm Nordwind: And that this could run through the other five views...

Storm Nordwind: or be a parallel motive, enjoyed for its own sake

Storm Nordwind: The net effect of that, of course, was that none of the exercises or explorations we did were onerous
Storm Nordwind: Instead they were all a sheer delight!

So there it was. It is possible to enjoy Play as Being explorations simply because we like to do it! :) Meanwhile, there was a brief interlude comparing the Second Life to real life. I realised that the lack of an ongoing chat log was a positive advantage in real life!

Wol Euler: I do hope that someone was recording the various expounderies?
Storm Nordwind: Hmmm... well, genesis was keeping a log of sorts
Wol Euler: or that the speakesr can reconstruct them
Storm Nordwind: But it was whatever appealed to her at the time (or, more likely, whatever she could keep up with!)
Pema Pera: we often felt like scrolling back in the log -- only to remember we didn'thave a log in RL . . . .
Wol Euler: yes!
Storm Nordwind: Haha yes!

Storm Nordwind: Actually that was a GOOD thing, not a bad!
Storm Nordwind: It forced you to stay in the moment
Pema Pera: nor could we take up a camera position for best view of the room . . . .

So now I put forward an impression I knew to be markedly different to most other attendees. Of course, an impression like that is very likely either to be not understood or misunderstood!

First the impression...

Storm Nordwind: We had a day of silence midway through the retreat that many people enjoyed and found beneficial
Storm Nordwind: Though I have to say it was not to my preferred taste - though I did go along with it
Storm Nordwind: (I suspect much of my raison d'etre is communication with people)
Storm Nordwind: I did enjoy the discussions too. There were very many insights that were shared. Sometimes a 6 minute meditation sparked a discussion of many times that length
Storm Nordwind: I found the discussions energising
Storm Nordwind: But that's what you would expect from an extrovert - pretty much by definition!

Then clearing up a misunderstanding...

Eliza Madrigal: I wonder if, though resistent to the idea of silent day, you noticed if it was helpful for others or opened another kind of communication...
Storm Nordwind: I did not say I was resistant! :)

Storm Nordwind: I simply found less personal benefit than the other days

Then adding further insight...

Storm Nordwind: For me it meant I was less observant of surroundings, though many found they were more observant. That's because when I communicate with someone I absorb the whole context from which they are speaking, including their surroundings. Perhaps for some others, speech can distract them from that awareness.

Storm Nordwind: Silent retreats are very popular. And I'm the odd one out here. But that's simply because I value communication that much.

Storm Nordwind: It can be Mary, either constructively or destructively. What did you have in mind?
Mary Korpov: Not much, really.

Mary Korpov: Um, I actually meant that. I didn't have anything in mind--it was just a question.

Storm Nordwind: What does anyone else think?
Wol Euler: moods and feelings communicate without words, sure.
Storm Nordwind nods
Pema Pera: in RL for sure; in SL silence is a bit harder to interpret
Bertram Jacobus: i think, this sort of silence may be more a spiritual exercise ? ...
Mary Korpov: But is't complete silence a way of communicating the state of one's inner being?
Eliza Madrigal: I've tried silent days at home, find it enjoyable... the harder thing for me would be to not write
Mary Korpov: I often go for several days without speaking--those are very happy times.
Storm Nordwind: To me, it's like a radio Mary. You can broadcast, but you can't be sure anyone has a receiver switched on, or even if it's tuned to the same frequency!

Pema now makes a point about what can be emphasised in communication when speech is missing. My response implies that these other forms of communication can be present anyway, silence or no, and because I find those forms of communication so desirable I emphasise them anyway during normal speech.

Eliza Madrigal: what's funny about silent days is that you realize how much you are talking in your own head

Now I briefly bring up a final and (to me) very important point about silence. Anyone who has both trained or naturally heightened sensitivity and a highly developed ethical awareness will recognise why this is so important to me.

Storm Nordwind: Another thing is that people broadcast involuntarily. They may not want me to pick up what they are thinking and feeling. So I would risk intruding on their private space if I read those feelings

I believe our visitor understands this and contrasts the retreat (silent or not) with communication in Second Life.

Wol Euler: I'm not sure I agree.
Wol Euler: I don't know your RL name, or the colour of your RL eyes, but if we spoke here a few times, I think we would hve a pretty good idea of the person that you are.
Wol Euler: we get to know each other quite well
Mary Korpov: IT adds a layer of obfuscation. None of you can really know anything about me unless I type it here. There are no other signals sent.
Mary Korpov: You can get to know each other, but it is voluntary, much moresoe than RL

Pema Pera: We were surprised to see how well we all knew each other, when we met at the retreat . . . mostly only through SL contacts
Storm Nordwind: Oh there are plenty of signals... many cues - dress, timing, movement, affiliations... all as valid and misleading as in real life
Mary Korpov: The only fruits I have are my melons, and I'm pretty careful about who gets to know them

We've intrigued our new visitor, so we try quickly to explain what's been going on. In return she tells us of her interesting student project. How fortunate for us all to have met!

Wol Euler: a meditation and discussion retreat inCalifornia
Storm Nordwind: Maisie, this Play as Being thing that we do... we usually speak about it here and we practice individually. Last week was the first time we got together in real life to practice and discuss together
Eos Amaterasu: kind of entering new terrritory as well, in spite of having done many buddhist retreats, group and solo
Maisie Fonda: How incredible. How was it meeting up for the first time?
Storm Nordwind: Play as Being is very powerful Eos. Anything that brings the "result into the path" can have dramatic effects!
Storm Nordwind: Wonderful Maisie!

Eos Amaterasu: somehow makes it more powerful on both sides

Maisie Fonda: It sounds fantastic. I am actually writing a PhD which looks at online Buddhism versus offline Buddhism.
