    Eden Haiku: Good morning Arch :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Gutes tag, alles :)
    Bleu Oleander: hi Bruce :)
    Eden Haiku: Good morning mini-Bruce :)
    Bruce Mowbray: Hi, everyone.
    Pema Pera: hi Bruce!
    Eliza Madrigal: (back) Hi Pema, Zen, Bruce, and Arch :)
    Bleu Oleander: mini-Bruce :))
    Archmage Atlantis: Theme session now, yes?
    Bleu Oleander: Hi Eos :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Eos :)
    Zen Arado: Hi Eliza, Bruce :)
    Eos Amaterasu: Hi identities all!
    Zen Arado: Hi Eos :)
    Eden Haiku: Hello Eos :)
    Eden Haiku: Yes, we are going to start the theme session, in a minute or so maybe?
    Eden Haiku: Well, let us start now :)

    Eden Haiku:: Playing with Boundaries
    :: Limits of our bodies
    :: Extents of our hearts
    : Our bounded minds
    : Our bonded souls
    : Our  boundless spirit...
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: Welcome everyone
    :: This is a theme session
    :: about ‘space’
    :: a theme that will be continued
    :: in Steve's session
    :: this Wednesday
    :: December 8th at 7 pm
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: This morning, we will discuss
    :: "Playing with Boundaries"
    ::
    :: As it is usual in a theme session
    :: Bleu, Zen and I
    :: will introduce the topic for 20 minutes or so
    :: and after that we will open the floor
    :: for everyone to discuss boundaries
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: Until then
    :: we would appreciate
    :: if you would play as listeners:)
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: I'm going to address
    :: the question of personal boundaries
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: then Zen will present a mind map of the topic
    ::
    :: and Bleu will conclude
    :: maybe connecting the theme
    :: to the Art of Being Self project
    ::
    Eden Haiku:: this new art project is allowing us
    :: to explore the concept of "space"
    :: by pushing our envelopes
    :: playing with boundaries of time
    :: between genders and species
    :: between RL and SL
    :: and so much more
    :: an exploration which I find

    ::
    Eden Haiku:: healthy boundaries are flexible

    ::
    Eden Haiku:: on the contrary
    :: if someone is threatening

    ::
    Eden Haiku:: and, once secured,

    Zen's mind map of boundaries
    Boundaries mindmap.JPG

    Zen Arado: I used a mind map to help me think
    Zen Arado: I will post it at the end
    Zen Arado: not sure you would all see it
    Zen Arado: The most obvious boundary to me is in the shape of a personal, self-created barrier between ourselves and the rest of the world
    Zen Arado: We build a kind of mental barrier that helps protect us, helps our chances of survival and maximizes our potential well-being - or so we think and hope
    Zen Arado: And the way we do it is by developing an ego self
    Zen Arado: But this also closes us off and limits us - it causes mutual fear and separation from each other - we think mainly of me and mine and become self-centered, selfish, possessive and uncompassionate. We suffer from shame, guilt, pride, jealousy, conceit, self pity and other negative emotions
    Zen Arado:  we need to find ways to diminish this sense of self
    Zen Arado: We need spiritual practices that help put us in touch with our real self again
    Zen Arado: We can use techniques like those in Pema's book, or meditation, or something even simpler like continuously asking the question - 'Who am 'I'
    Zen Arado: But we have to be patient - it doesn't always happen at once. It took a long time to erect these barriers and wrong ways of interpretation. Careful deconstruction can also take time.
    Zen Arado: Bleu?

    Bleu tells us how boundaries enable biological cells to live

    Bleu Oleander: thank you Zen and Eden
    Bleu Oleander: I'll begin my thoughts on ¨boundaries¨ with some comments about a basic building block of life - the cell.
    Bleu Oleander: Life got started long ago when a single biological cell formed a ¨boundary¨ called a membrane. Life is carried out inside a boundary that defines a cell and ultimately a body. Life and the life urge exist within boundary. If there is no boundary, there is no body, and if there is no body, there is no organism. Life needs a boundary.
    Bleu Oleander: Inside a simple cell, a complicated operation requires ¨sensing¨ the state of the chemical profile inside the boundary which requires unconscious knowledge of what to do to keep homeostasis. Homeostasis is the coordinated physiological reactions which maintain most of the steady states of the body, living organism, allowing life to maintain itself.
    Bleu Oleander: Perception in order to sense imbalance, and skill to perform a pre-emptive or corrective action all takes place in the cell without a nervous system. This was already present in single-cell creatures before they were part of multicellular organisms, let alone multicellular organisms with brains. For over two billion years ... a very successful strategy, continuing today .... the overwhelming majority of life as we know it being single celled organisms.

    --BELL--

    Bleu Oleander: Boundaries enable cells to live, enable cells to live in their environment, sharing information and life sustaining nutrients through a porous boundary.
    Bleu Oleander: To illustrate the concept of boundaries, I borrow a texture from one of my past Art of Being projects. My avatar is wearing a texture based on the artist Kusama's paintings call ¨Infinity Nets¨
    Bleu Oleander: At first glance at the painting, the impasto imparts a sense of solidity, but over time the plane that peeks through openings in the red net of paint recedes, suggesting a net that veils a deeper void not unlike the porous membranes of the cell.
    Bleu Oleander: I can interpret Kusama's 'infinity Net' as illustrations of the porous boundaries of life, the physical, mental and spiritual boundaries.
    Bleu Oleander: Like the smallest cell, the building block of life, boundaries are necessary for life, boundaries that are porous.
    Bleu Oleander: A favorite line from one of Leonard Cohen's songs 'Anthem' is this:
    Bleu Oleander: There is crack -
    Bleu Oleander: A crack -
    Bleu Oleander: In everything.
    Bleu Oleander: That's how the light gets in.
    Bleu Oleander: So where do concepts of boundaries lead us? Perhaps to a way of thinking about the ¨self¨ .... a mental boundary inside which we exist as thinking beings. That boundary is very porous .... constantly revising and reinventing the self .... exchanging ideas and information with it's environment. Leading us to our current ¨Art of Being Self¨ project .... an exploration of ¨self,¨ ¨being,¨ and ¨being as self.¨
    Bleu Oleander: With that we will open it up for comments, questions, and conversation .....

    General discussion on boundaries

    Aphrodite Macbain: Bravo!
    Eden Haiku: Thank you so much Bleu for this beautiful expose and Zen, for your mind map. Yes, let's open the floor now
    Pema Pera: thank you all, what an inspiring series of presentations!
    Eos Amaterasu: Oh yes, can u give a link to the mind map?
    Archmage Atlantis: Nicely spoken Eden, Zen, Bleu
    Zen Arado: I wasn't able to rez the mind map anyway
    Eliza Madrigal: wow, just fantastic. Thanks so much
    Eden Haiku: I'm surprised you cannot rez the mind map here Zen, I think it's possible...
    Eos Amaterasu: thnx, Zen
    Eden Haiku: Ah thanks Zen!
    Bleu Oleander: ty Zen!
    Eden Haiku: Let me give a notecard to the newcomers. Welcome Aph and Steve!
    Eliza Madrigal gave notes :)
    Pema Pera: you may have to activate the playasbeinghere group, Zen
    Zen Arado: thanks to Riddle I found free software that does mind maps
    Zen Arado: ah ok
    Eden Haiku: oh, thank you Eliza :)
    Eliza Madrigal: most welcome :)
    Eos Amaterasu: re boundaries: good? bad? beyond that?
    Eos Amaterasu: I got a kind of Klein bottle image
    Eos Amaterasu: where you're perceiving outward
    Bleu Oleander: I think one can see boundaries as either good, bad or both
    Eos Amaterasu: which then kind of curls back and changes how you perceive
    Boundless Steve.jpg

    Eden Haiku: Steve is nowhere to be reached...out of boundaries…[on my screen, Steve had vanished from his clothes!]
    Eos Amaterasu: we play with creating boundaries and both sides of those
    stevenaia Michinaga: ??
    Archmage Atlantis: Both, I believe Eos.....to the extent that the concepts of good and bad have any meaning
    Bleu Oleander: yes, Arch
    Eos Amaterasu: we give it those meanings
    Bleu Oleander: I see the concept of boundaries as an enabling thing ... but also as a way of connecting
    Eos Amaterasu: skin is helpful and fun contact
    Bleu Oleander: it is that way in art for me

    Boundaries as barriers, bridges, living membranes?

    Zen Arado: I tend to see them as barriers mostly
    Bleu Oleander: setting boundaries inspires creativity
    Zen Arado: but they are necessary sometimes I guess
    Eden Haiku: Yes, skin is a good example of a fun boundary...
    Bleu Oleander: there you have two ways of looking at the same concept :)
    Zen Arado: sometimes we need to limit
    Pema Pera: boundaries as bridges . . .
    Bleu Oleander: yes Pema
    Eos Amaterasu: the cell membrane thing is cool - there's lots of traffic there
    Zen Arado: a permeable boundary
    Bleu Oleander: yes very porous
    Zen Arado: ?
    Eden Haiku: Frames, art form boundaries are really useful: writing an haiku in the 5/7/5 rythm helps generating new images
    Zen Arado: a boundary is really a container
    Bleu Oleander: boundaries necessary for life
    Archmage Atlantis: Growing up, a hug or a pat on the back was good, and did not violate my personal physical being........As I learned of other persons, and their histories, I found that many had very different personal boundaries than I did
    Yakuzza Lethecus: hey everyone
    Bleu Oleander: hi Yaku
    Zen Arado: Hi Yaku :)
    Bruce Mowbray: Hi, Yaku.
    Pema Pera: hi there, Yaku
    Eden Haiku: I think what you are talking about Zen when you say 'barriers' is rigid boundaries, boundaries that lost their flexibility...and solidified.
    Eden Haiku: hello Yaku :)
    Zen Arado: yes - but most boundaries seem designed to do that?
    Eos Amaterasu: localization requires boundary
    Zen Arado: they prescribe a limit
    Eden Haiku: No, I don't think so...
    Zen Arado: this far and no further
    Bleu Oleander: boundaries can clarify
    Bleu Oleander: don't need to be rigid
    Zen Arado: oh yes - but by limiting first
    Bleu Oleander: I see them as positive
    Eden Haiku: A limit that can change, extend, shrink, transform, dancing with the flow...
    Eliza Madrigal: Kusama, if I understand her background correctly, has found it necessary to let others make boundaries for her from time to time, committing herself, etc... artists sometimes stretch a bit too thin, but find it necessary to do so... but choosing another to make a boundary I guess makes a boundary
    Eos Amaterasu: "distinction is perfect continence"
    Archmage Atlantis: perhaps solidified, or at least hardened, generally to protect the self.....which is more than just ego......and for me, not all ego is "bad""
    Pema Pera:open boundaries / they do not have to bind us / bounding not binding
    Eliza Madrigal: :))) Pema

    --BELL--

    Setting limits to explore freedom

    Bleu Oleander: :))
    Bleu Oleander: setting limits/boundaries to explore freedom
    Bleu Oleander: push the envelope as Eden said
    Eden Haiku: :) Pema
    Zen Arado: depends what kind of boundaries they are perhaps
    Eos Amaterasu: a cup
    Archmage Atlantis: Agree, Zen
    Bleu Oleander: conceptual boundaries
    Zen Arado: territorial boundaries usually bind
    Zen Arado: war fought over them
    Eden Haiku: or bond
    Bleu Oleander: not necessarily
    Pema Pera: I feel a bond with Holland, my native country, but I don't feel that binds me
    Zen Arado: if you want openness you take away the boundaries
    Eden Haiku: Yes, a bond is not necessarily a bind...
    Zen Arado: a bond is not a boundary though?
    Archmage Atlantis: Yes, one can be blinded by a boundary, without it being a bind
    Zen Arado: a boundary seems more rigid to me by definition
    Eden Haiku: We are playing with boundaries of words here hehe
    Pema Pera: without a boundary, Holland would be the whole Earth -- not so interesting :)
    Zen Arado: yes Eden :)
    Pema Pera: (to Zen)
    Pema Pera: nice, Arch :)
    Bleu Oleander: same with self .... without a boundary everyone is same - also not so interesting
    Zen Arado: if you fly over a country you don't see any state lines
    Eden Haiku: No more Gouda cheese and clogs, no more Delft tiles...
    Zen Arado: they are constructed
    Pema Pera: try flying over North Korea, Zen :-)
    Zen Arado: was thinking of USA:)
    Eos Amaterasu: crossing boundaries by train you see differences more easily
    Aphrodite Macbain: boundaries are concepts - put into action
    Bleu Oleander: depends on vantage point maybe
    Eden Haiku: Political boundaries are hyper-sensitive.
    Eos Amaterasu: if my ph level changes ever so slightly I go crazy
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes Bleu - who is inside and who is outside
    Archmage Atlantis: Actually, only partially true, rivers and mountain ranges do often mark US state boundaries
    Zen Arado: read about 'open borders' concept one time
    Eden Haiku: You do?
    Bruce Mowbray: Unless they're dynamic, boundaries also impose "concept-identities" -- as with a prisoner in solitary confinement.
    Aphrodite Macbain: Eos?
    Eos Amaterasu: we all do, Edie :-)
    Zen Arado: yes Arch but they are still only mountains and rivers until we decide they are boundaries
    Eden Haiku: oh oh...
    Aphrodite Macbain: concepts applied
    Zen Arado: point is we seem to construct boundaries
    Eos Amaterasu: we change our boundaries in different closeness to people
    Eliza Madrigal: one boundary changes often in response to another beneath it
    Eos Amaterasu: :p)
    Eden Haiku: You live in Ireland Zen, I live in Quebec. Two places were ¨boundaries¨ are very touchy...
    Zen Arado: and the worst is between ourselves and others
    Aphrodite Macbain: say more Eliza

    Boundaries between ourselves and ourselves

    Pema Pera: how about the boundaries between ourselves and ourselves?
    Zen Arado: exactly Pema
    Zen Arado: false boundary
    Bleu Oleander: what are the boundaries between ourselves and ourselves?
    Eden Haiku: Walls of delusions
    Pema Pera: oh, but we tend to compartmentalize, and then one part of us fights another, Zen
    Zen Arado: yes
    Pema Pera: Yes, please Eliza (re: say more)
    Eliza Madrigal: just considering the layered responsiveness of our experience and how time moves in various ways...
    Archmage Atlantis: boundaries of psyche, vision, and physical construction of the mind, even the individual mind
    Aphrodite Macbain: what do you mean by the boundaries below
    Zen Arado: yes we can change boundaries too
    Aphrodite Macbain: depending on circumstances
    Eliza Madrigal: seems we work at various levels contextually...
    Bleu Oleander: "good" boundaries are flexible, porous and changing
    Aphrodite Macbain: meaning some boundaries are not fixed
    Pema Pera: boundaries between boundaries . . .
    Eos Amaterasu: boundaries rubbing boundaries
    Eden Haiku: Multilevel corridors of boundaries Eliza :) ?
    Eliza Madrigal: many ways of communication, gift giving, space giving, etc
    Aphrodite Macbain: compartmentalized selves
    Eliza Madrigal: :) Eden
    Bleu Oleander: "bad" are rigid, fixed, unchanging
    Bruce Mowbray ponders "evolving" boundaries.
    Zen Arado: expanding boundaries
    Aphrodite Macbain: sometimes those fixed boundaries come in handy
    Zen Arado: flexibilizing boundaries
    Bleu Oleander: fuzzy boundaries
    Eliza Madrigal: multicolored dynamic flashes of boundaries in quick successions.. heh
    Zen Arado: :)
    Eos Amaterasu: boundaries bounding out from the big bond
    stevenaia Michinaga: flexible boundary, reminds me of pushing a balloon
    Visible boundaries.jpg

    The Big Bond

    Eden Haiku: Living boundaries, yes, Bruce ¨evolving¨, like some animal membrane...some porous cells
    Zen Arado: outside the box - or boundary
    Bleu Oleander: brings back to cells .... likes that Eden :)
    Eden Haiku: The big bond takes place right after the Big Bang Eos?
    Zen Arado: protective but disposable boundaries
    Bruce Mowbray: "Evolving" in order to adapt. . . in order to survive.
    Archmage Atlantis: However, and who ever defines the walls of the box determines what is outside and what inside
    Eden Haiku: yes
    Eliza Madrigal: speed can set a boundary... slow down and take 'more' in.... speed up to distribute faster...
    Bleu Oleander: ever inclusive boundaries
    stevenaia Michinaga: a boundary in time?
    stevenaia Michinaga: Eliza
    Eliza Madrigal: stitch in time, saves nine?
    Eos Amaterasu: the big bond is the observation precipitating the big bang, Eden (perhaps :-)
    Zen Arado: time limits

    --BELL--

    First memory, first boundary of self? And death: the final boundary?

    Bruce Mowbray really likes "ever-including" boundaries
    stevenaia Michinaga: time never limits times
    Archmage Atlantis: If a boundary includes everything, it seems less reasonable to call it a boundary at all
    Zen Arado: limit has dual meaning - one of decreasing
    Zen Arado: the verb that is
    Eden Haiku: Pabbers have been playing a lot with boundaries of time lately: remembering being 18 years old, remembering their first memory, becoming a young child again as Bruce did.
    Eos Amaterasu: first memory: first boundary of self?
    Bleu Oleander: playing with self boundaries ....
    Aphrodite Macbain: who remembers their first memory?
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
    Eden Haiku: Yes, first boundary of self,likely...Mine was looking into the fire in a wood-stove, dropping my pacifier as urged by my Mom. I was not one year old yet.
    Aphrodite Macbain: can one say that definitions are boundaries - a form of definition
    Eos Amaterasu: How symbolic, Eden!
    Bleu Oleander: language is a boundary
    Eden Haiku: Yes, definition is definitely a boundary Aph
    Zen Arado: could be Aphro -
    Eos Amaterasu: de-finite-ion
    Archmage Atlantis: Interesting question Aph.....my guess is we all remember our first memory, we just didn't have the mental tools to order it as "first" at that time
    Aphrodite Macbain: an anxious memory Eden
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes. we are bound in so many ways
    Zen Arado: we separate things off to label and study them
    Zen Arado: categorize them
    Bruce Mowbray: Just as definition can be imposed from the top-down -- or discovered through bottom-up exploration, so also may boundaries be imposed or discovered.
    Eden Haiku: No, I was delighted by the colors in the flames...Anxiety came when I started looking for my pacifier I suppose :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: sometimes it's useful to define things narrowly; sometimes not
    Eliza Madrigal: :) Eden
    Bruce Mowbray definitely prefers "discovered" to "imposed" boundaries, if possible.
    Zen Arado: just as we define ouselves as 'me'
    Aphrodite Macbain: or male or female or young or etc
    Zen Arado: or old :(
    Aphrodite Macbain: I wasn't going to say that....:-)
    Zen Arado: :)
    Eos Amaterasu wonders how old is awareness?
    Zen Arado: death the final boundary
    Bruce Mowbray feels that the "older" he gets, the less "defined" things like male/female and old/young become.
    Zen Arado: true with me too Bruce
    Archmage Atlantis: Was in a discussion about "when are we old?"......lots of viewpoints on that :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: I am thinking about the ability to cross boundaries, to be able to move from one state to another
    Zen Arado: lose the boundaries
    Zen Arado: but have to respect other's boundaries
    Aphrodite Macbain: to step in and out of the circle
    Aphrodite Macbain: some people have that priviledge or ability

    Winding down to the final frontier

    Eos Amaterasu: Do any of the presenters wish to make a comment re this topic before the hour ends/
    Aphrodite Macbain: To be comfortable and active on both sides of a boundary
    Eden Haiku: Natives didn't have boundaries for the earth. Saw it as a circle.
    Eos Amaterasu: ?
    Aphrodite Macbain: To see things from all sides
    Archmage Atlantis: That is the ideal, Zen.....but clearly defined boundaries, expressed by the "other" are needed for the ability to respect
    Zen Arado: yes - we brought the idea of territorial boundaries with us
    Bruce Mowbray: Care-givers (especially in intense situations like Hospice) need a keen sense of personal boundaries in order not to burn out.
    Zen Arado: will we ever be free of them?
    Eliza Madrigal: indeed, Bruce...
    Aphrodite Macbain: I hope not
    Zen Arado: yes
    Bleu Oleander: so perhaps there is value in seeing boundaries as positive and value in understanding when boundaries are rigid and fixed
    Eliza Madrigal: they need to include themselves in the care and love and compassion
    Zen Arado: distancing is necessary sometimes?
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes
    Eden Haiku: Well Eos, maybe that ¨playing with boundaries¨is a vast topic. Steve promised he was going to say all there is to say about ¨space¨ on Wednesday night, didn't you Steve?
    Bleu Oleander: with a goal of ever widening and inclusive boundaries
    Eliza Madrigal: not necessarily distance
    Archmage Atlantis: Conceptually, for me, without boundaries, there is no we, us, me
    Aphrodite Macbain: self imposed boundaries
    stevenaia Michinaga: :) in 10 minutes
    Eden Haiku: You can do it Steve!
    Eliza Madrigal: yes we are all depending on Steve
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Dates, times - those are boundaries, yes
    Eden Haiku: Suspense...
    Zen Arado: yes and useful ones
    stevenaia Michinaga: oh the pressure , I will type fast
    Eliza Madrigal: the bell and pause is a lingering boundary
    Zen Arado: now see that boundaries can be useful
    Zen Arado: was more rigid when I started this discussion
    Eliza Madrigal: :) Zen
    Pema Pera: yes, an open boundary, it seems, Eliza :-)
    Aphrodite Macbain: steve's fingers are burning
    Zen Arado: have expanded my boundaries :)
    Bleu Oleander: boundaries are a tool for life and tools can be used for "good" or "bad"
    Eden Haiku: Thank you very much Bleu and Zen for such thoughtful presentations. And also to everyone for listening and for your contributions to this boundless topic :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: like most things
    Eos Amaterasu: neurons fire across synapse boundaries
    stevenaia Michinaga: boundaries can be options, open or closed
    Aphrodite Macbain: jump boundaries
    Pema Pera: thank you, Eden, Zen, Bleu, what a great theme session!
    Bleu Oleander: thank you all for coming:)
    Zen Arado: thank you too Eden and everyone
    Eos Amaterasu: thank you!
    Aphrodite Macbain: Thank you, a very stimulating discussion. Even better than coffee
    Eos Amaterasu: coming up, 90 secs the final frontier
    Bruce Mowbray: Thanks, everyone. . . Lots of stimulating thoughts here today.
    Eliza Madrigal: Thanks so much for such a well-defined theme session!
    Eden Haiku: ;)
    Pema Pera: hahaha, Eos!

    --BELL--

    Bruce Mowbray ponders "better than coffee...."
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: coffee at your age, Bruce ?
    Eliza Madrigal: :) a cafecita shot
    Archmage Atlantis: Would like a Cuban coffee right now
    Aphrodite Macbain: oo that coffee!
    Archmage Atlantis: But expresso would do *g*
    Eliza Madrigal: :) one can become acclimated to even that ... tis a danger
    Eden Haiku: Final frontier :)
    Bleu Oleander: too much talk of coffee .... off to get some :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Namaste'
    Bleu Oleander: thank you all for a fun session
    Bruce Mowbray: ;_0
