Wol Euler was guardian for this session.
Wol Euler: timezone-appropriate greetings, hana
Hana Furlough: and to you too, wol!
Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: how's life?
Hana Furlough: pretty good
Hana Furlough: you?
Wol Euler: fighting off a cold, otherwise fine
Wol Euler: could be worse :)
Hana Furlough: haha indeed
Hana Furlough: any more bird sightings?
Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: not lately, alas
Wol Euler: but birdsong is all around
Wol Euler: quite lovely
Hana Furlough: same here
Hana Furlough: it was in the 20s today
Wol Euler: wow
Hana Furlough: birds all over the place
Hana Furlough: my pigeon flock is back and waking me up early
Wol Euler grins.
Wol Euler: ah yes, the dawn chorus
Hana Furlough: yes indeed
Wol Euler: I notice them most at work, actually
Hana Furlough: oh really?
Wol Euler: it's a thickly wooded neignbourhood, with allotment gardens where the train tracks run through
Wol Euler: so it's gone from being silent to being full of birds in a week
Hana Furlough: wow amazing!
Wol Euler: hawks too, one seldom sees them but I can hear their cries
Hana Furlough: interesting
Wol Euler: even an owl, which I sometimes hear when walking home very late
Hana Furlough: wow! that's really something
Hana Furlough: i used to see owls every so often in california
Hana Furlough: i think one would have to be in the mountains to see an owl here
Wol Euler: oh, you might be surprised :)
Wol Euler: they eat rodents after all, and rodents love cities
Hana Furlough: ahh interesting
Hana Furlough: maybe there are some here, then
Wol Euler: it would really surprise me if there weren't
Hana Furlough: we have bats in my neighborhood
Wol Euler: in the temple gardens, for example
Hana Furlough: yeah that would be quite likely
Hana Furlough: or near the imperial palace
Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: bats are nice. I haven't seen any yet this year, but they too must be waking up around now
Hana Furlough: yes for sure
--BELL--
Hana Furlough: once i wanted to dress tsubaki up as a bat for halloween, since she was black. i was going to attach bat wings to the hamster pipe in her house, so she could look like a bat when she was passing through
Wol Euler giggles.
Wol Euler: performance art!
Wol Euler: you should, youtube would love that!
Hana Furlough: lol! yes!
Hana Furlough: that would have been amazing
Wol Euler: yep
Wol Euler: you know the cat Maru, of course :)
Wol Euler: Tsubaki could be just as big a star
Hana Furlough: yes!
There was a pause at this point during which I posted a brief note on Facebook; Hana commented on it a moment later.
Wol Euler: ha ha, caught you :)
Wol Euler: well, we caught each other
Hana Furlough: haha indeed!
Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: layers of distraction
Hana Furlough: seriously
Wol Euler: add in the CD playing in the background ...
Wol Euler: for that matter add in my awareness of the gnawing hunger in my still unfed belly ...
Hana Furlough: oh no!
Wol Euler: :)
Hana Furlough: time for breakfast!
Hana Furlough: my mind keeps wandering to my suitcase
Hana Furlough: have i forgotten anything?
Wol Euler raises an eyebrow.
Wol Euler: suitcase?
Hana Furlough: yeas
Hana Furlough: i'm headed back to the states for a few days starting tomorrow
Hana Furlough: need to defend my dissertation
Wol Euler: oh cool
Wol Euler: and nervewracking, I guess :)
Wol Euler: heheheh
Hana Furlough: yeah i just want it to be wednesday already
Wol Euler: awwwwww
Wol Euler gives your hand a squeeze
Wol Euler: good luck
Hana Furlough: thank you@
Hana Furlough: !
Wol Euler: as long as you have your copy of the thesis, and your notes and backing material, anything else can be bought in California
Wol Euler: I would say :)
Hana Furlough: right! this is true
Hana Furlough: i was evening thinking about what might happen if my suitcase was lost, but i could just buy new clothes
Wol Euler: my parents always said "as long as you have your passport, your tickets and your money, everything else is optional"
Wol Euler: exactly
Hana Furlough: right
Hana Furlough: probably good advice for life, as well
Wol Euler: make sure the thesis etc is in your carry-on, not your checked bag
Wol Euler: heh, I sound like your mother
Wol Euler: sorry :)
Hana Furlough: lol no much appreciated!
Hana Furlough: actually, i have it in dropbox
Hana Furlough: and in my email account as well
Hana Furlough: so if something happened, i could still get it
Wol Euler: good thinking :)
--BELL--
Wol Euler: I was thinking about that, because I do the same, and realized that there is still a single-point-of-failure risk
Wol Euler: namely that I don't know any of the necessary passwords by heart
Wol Euler: I should consider that more closely.
Hana Furlough: oh no
Hana Furlough: yeah that could be bad in some kind of extreme scenario
Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: I was imagining myself in your position. If the hardcopy went astray, I'd use my laptop to ...
Wol Euler: ah but wait, the laptop would be in the same bag as the hardcopy! so it too would be gone!
Hana Furlough: oh no!
Wol Euler: how would I get to my dropbox then?
Hana Furlough: aren't you supposed to be able to access it online somehow?
Wol Euler: sure, if you know the password :)
Hana Furlough: oh dear, i'm now realizing that i have no idea how!
Wol Euler: in theory you can get to it from any computer anywhere, as long as you know the password
Hana Furlough: oh ok
Wol Euler: (and the account name!)
Hana Furlough: (right...)
Wol Euler: anyway, I don't want to put even more stress on you. I'm sure it'll be fine
Hana Furlough: haha no worries
Wol Euler smiles.
Hana Furlough: life will go on no matter what
Wol Euler: true that.
Wol Euler: try to have some fun and relaxation time there too :)
Hana Furlough: : )
Hana Furlough: that's the plan
Hana Furlough: especially afterwards
Wol Euler: good :)
Wol Euler: how long are you staying?
Hana Furlough: until friday
Wol Euler: oh that is a short trip
Wol Euler: considering the distance
Hana Furlough: yeah but i've already started my job so i could only take 5 days off
Wol Euler: of course
Hana Furlough: oh well, it should be nice
Wol Euler nods.
Hana Furlough: although i hear it is colder in the bay area than it is in kyoto right now
Wol Euler: heheheheh
Hana Furlough: what are you up to this weekend?
Wol Euler: not a lot, staying indoors mostly
Wol Euler: keeping warm, drinking lots of fluids
Wol Euler: if the weather is fine, and I feel up to the challenge, I might go to the zoo with boss and bossette and their kids on sunday
Hana Furlough: oh nice
Hana Furlough: i hope your cold gets better so you can
Wol Euler: thank you :)
Wol Euler: I'm going to be really cautious about this, though
Wol Euler: it's a dangerous time of year for me
Wol Euler: (change of weather)
Wol Euler: I often if not usually get sick in late winter/early spring
Hana Furlough: ahh yes that can definitely make one sick
Wol Euler nods.
Hana Furlough: better to be on the safe side, for sure
Wol Euler: yep
Hana Furlough: well, i hope you feel better
Wol Euler smiles.
Hana Furlough: and can enjoy the weekend somehow
Wol Euler: thank you
Wol Euler: I'll enjoy it even if I stay home :) I'm happy enough at home
Wol Euler: there's plenty to read, and the internet to play in
Hana Furlough: that is good too : )
--BELL--
Hana Furlough: i should get going
Hana Furlough: and let you have breakfast
Wol Euler: heheheheh
Wol Euler: thank you :)
Wol Euler: I wish you a peaceful and boring flight, and a successful defence, and some nice time off
Hana Furlough: thank you! yes, let it be so!
Hana Furlough: take care and talk to you soon!
Wol Euler: bye for now
Hana Furlough: bye!
