    Reading and writing:

    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Eliza :)
    Zen (zen.arado): nice sari :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): just IMing with SzavannaSun
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): thank you :)
    Zen (zen.arado): is it?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes it is
    Zen (zen.arado): scared I was wrong :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me smiles... what would be the consequences of being wrong
    Zen (zen.arado): a faux pas ?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): true... dreadful
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
    Zen (zen.arado): :)
Zen (zen.arado): might have to leave suddenly if social worker comes
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): sure
Zen (zen.arado): she wanted to come yesterday but I had cleaning ladies
Zen (zen.arado): woud be vacuuming around us etc
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me nods... sounds like a palace
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Zen (zen.arado): hmm not very tidy palace
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): heheh
    Zen (zen.arado): too many books
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): even with kindle?
Zen (zen.arado): Kindle is such a blessing
Zen (zen.arado): I had to but a peperback for first time for about a year and find it so awkward
    Zen (zen.arado): buy
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I am still resisting that... so much of my way of connection and learning is with a screen meditating
Zen (zen.arado): especially reading in bed
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): mediating*
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): oh, true... am sure the light from the kindle is a blessing too for that
Zen (zen.arado): writing course they keep on about writing in notebooks but I am jjust about to stop that
Zen (zen.arado): no light from my Kindle
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): is it over, or are you finished?
Zen (zen.arado): one of the reasons it is better...no glare
Zen (zen.arado): doesn't finish until end of May
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): it has been hard to tell whether you've found it enjoyable/helpful.etc from what you've said
Zen (zen.arado): I have three assignments close together
Zen (zen.arado): yes enjoyable but hard work
Zen (zen.arado): poetry criticism was particularly helpful
Zen (zen.arado): I realise how little I know about writing poetry
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): me too
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I just write
Zen (zen.arado): you have to spend ages redrafting polishing words and phrases
    Zen (zen.arado): finding better imagery
Zen (zen.arado): and rhymes if you use them
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): in general I'm not a very original person... I absorb others' rhythms and jump into streams
    Zen (zen.arado): everyone does
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): if I am reading a particular author I find myself speaking/writing like they do
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): like something out of another time...
    Zen (zen.arado): yes..inspiring
Zen (zen.arado): you have to reads lots of poetry to be able to write it too
Zen (zen.arado): I am on memoir atm
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): after taking this course do you dislike hearing poetry that is obviously not polished?
Zen (zen.arado): not sure whether to wqrite prose of poems
    Zen (zen.arado): hmm not sure
Zen (zen.arado): but have learned more what good poetry is
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Zen (zen.arado): lots of good imagery seems key
Zen (zen.arado): not too many adjectives
Zen (zen.arado): my poems can be too 'prosy' too
Zen (zen.arado): not totally sure wht that means
Zen (zen.arado): not enough imagery I guess
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): have you written anything that you then stood back from and felt satisfied with?
    Zen (zen.arado): no :)
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
    Zen (zen.arado): not any more
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): loss of innocence
Zen (zen.arado): though I did my best tutor still finds so many faults
Zen (zen.arado): should post you a copy of what she said
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): is she the same with everyone?
Zen (zen.arado): ah some better than me, some worse
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well... remember the worst horse....
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me giggles
Zen (zen.arado): one woman came up with great imagery on the forum
Zen (zen.arado): she points out how the poems could be improved but I haven't time to do that atm
Zen (zen.arado): am tempted to write more poetry just to get the critiques
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me smiles
Zen (zen.arado): we have to research publishers next assignment
    Zen (zen.arado): and submit something
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): excellent
Zen (zen.arado): print publishing seems to be going out of fashion i think
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): does she also tell you what you particularly are good at?
Zen (zen.arado): oh yes she is fair
Zen (zen.arado): points out good and bad

    Memoir and memory:

Zen (zen.arado): trouble with memoir is memory
Zen (zen.arado): it is so unreliable
Zen (zen.arado): and I forget details
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but isn't that why one would write a memoir rather than autobiography? to have some creative room?
Zen (zen.arado): actually such a fine line between memoir and fiction
Zen (zen.arado): though I feel my memories are accurate
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes...one thing that is interesting... when writing memoir, is that "major events" don't necessarily weigh more than so-called minor ones
Zen (zen.arado): I found friends from 50 years ago in Australia had different versions of events
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): a person one knew for a small window may "matter" as much as someone there for the whole life fr instance
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): ah, that's fascinating when that happens
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): or, how others see you v how one sees themself
Zen (zen.arado): I am writing a memoir of migration to Australia
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): when someone says "oh you were always _____"
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Zen (zen.arado): funny but I have left out most of sea voyage
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): interesting!
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): did you ask yourself why?
Zen (zen.arado): contrasting life in Belfast with new life in Australia
Zen (zen.arado): it was pretty boring
Zen (zen.arado): and I can't remember much of it
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me smiles... well you remember the boredom, can write that
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): lol
Zen (zen.arado): only ports and then it is like someone's holiday stories
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): do you have things you didn't know you remember, but then you begin to write and they pour out in detail?
Zen (zen.arado): I don't remember what I did all day when we were at sea for maybe 10 day stretches
Zen (zen.arado): no it is just too long ago
Zen (zen.arado): and I started to write it in linear fashion
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): when I begin to write linear I know the writing is dead
Zen (zen.arado): I even researched how long the boat spent between ports
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but that can be helpful for an outline
Zen (zen.arado): you need to describe characters
Zen (zen.arado): you just need a 'through line'
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): have to have trust that your audience can make the leaps and loops with you
    Zen (zen.arado): then write episodes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): ah... say more about the 'through line" ?
Zen (zen.arado): well the through line is migration in this instance
Zen (zen.arado): so I start with my first job in Australia
Zen (zen.arado): then ca bit about the voyage, then my life in Belfast, then back to Australia
Zen (zen.arado): but only have 1500 words for this one
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): ? typo?
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): 1500 words allowed in total?
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yikes... like a short PaB session
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well... chopping down can be fun
Zen (zen.arado): we have 2000 words next one and 2500 for last which is a project
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I see
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): that's great actually
Zen (zen.arado): 1500 words or 40 lines of poetry
Zen (zen.arado): also have to write a 500 word commentary for each
Zen (zen.arado): explaining why we did what
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): goodness... memoir of memoir
Zen (zen.arado): shows what we have learned from courses
Zen (zen.arado): how it all came together
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): so in that vein...
Zen (zen.arado): what revisions we made
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): if I were to ask for your mini PaB memoir... beginning to now...
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): what would you say? :)
Zen (zen.arado): I hope to do that for last assignment
Zen (zen.arado): tutor recommended that as soon as I told her about SL
Zen (zen.arado): but will do episodes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well we are okay with unpolished version :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): nice that she showed interest though
Zen (zen.arado): it will be after May
Zen (zen.arado): well it is something different
    Zen (zen.arado): plenty of scope
    Zen (zen.arado): pab history?
    Zen (zen.arado): mine I mean
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes :)
    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Sunji :)
    Zen (zen.arado): or VAI
    Zen (zen.arado): or art
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Aph's been asking for people's PaB arrival stories... and I'm interested in that, but also the kind of hm...
    Zen (zen.arado): or theatre experiences
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): measure when one reflects
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): lol :) yes... I get it
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well for now, off the top of your head, just PaB
    Sunshine (szavanna): listening
Zen (zen.arado): 'we were in the green room anxiously awaiting our cues.....'
Sunshine (szavanna): and having a snack
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): heheh
Zen (zen.arado): with better typing :)
Zen (zen.arado): could plumb other's memories for that too
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me smiles at snacking Sunshine

    Crowns and art:

    Sunshine (szavanna): checks for crown
Zen (zen.arado): crown in for maintenace?
    Sunshine (szavanna): hm?
    Zen (zen.arado): diamonds polishing?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Sunshine (szavanna): I mean treasure hunt
    Zen (zen.arado): I know
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): whether you can see my crown is a test of your character :P
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): lollllol
Zen (zen.arado): I'm no goos at treasure hunts
Sunshine (szavanna): blabla you always say things like that ;p
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Sunshine (szavanna): there is something on your head
    Sunshine (szavanna): hmm
    Zen (zen.arado): because it's true
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): headdress
    Sunshine (szavanna): I love it
Zen (zen.arado): did you see Xiri's latest exhibition?
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes I did
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): yes!
    Sunshine (szavanna): very serious
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): powerful
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes
    Sunshine (szavanna): no kidding around
    Zen (zen.arado): yes..different
    Sunshine (szavanna): to the point
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes very different
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): impressive - the way she used the SL space
Zen (zen.arado): artists used to be social critics in days gone by
Sunshine (szavanna): yes I loved that
    Zen (zen.arado): Hogarth
Zen (zen.arado): really ssatirised his society
Zen (zen.arado): and Victorian painters told moral tales
Zen (zen.arado): I liked the religious one
Sunshine (szavanna): you mean modern artists don't do that enough?
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes me too
Zen (zen.arado): it's funny how church authorities wear those big hats and golden gowns and everyone accepts it
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I feel each should express what comes up for them and not feel pressure to be political - yet when such work comes up there is much to appreciate
Zen (zen.arado): and they look so ridiculous really
Sunshine (szavanna): yes true Zenji it feels a bit like a circus lol
Zen (zen.arado): I had to ask Xiri what one of them meant
Sunshine (szavanna): looking from a non religious background
Sunshine (szavanna): in South Africa - we have "township artists"
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): to take part in a circus can be valuable, especially if willingly
Zen (zen.arado): it three women in the foreground and men in big hats at the back
Sunshine (szavanna): they often address social issues
    Zen (zen.arado): had
Sunshine (szavanna): hehe yes Liz - if its your choice
Sunshine (szavanna): but I don't really wanna be part of that specific one
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): "girl on wire"
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I want to be part of them all at once
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me laughs
Zen (zen.arado): ashamed to say I didn't even notice the assumption that is is ok to have little women dressed in black run around and do all the menial tasks
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): this is one of the major things to be addressed in our time perhaps...
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): sometimes feels still very far away
Zen (zen.arado): you know in the presbyterian church I attended for many years women were not allowed to be elders
    Zen (zen.arado): or teach
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): in the "What About Me" film there was so much value... then they got into gender/marriage/ownership... was a weird diversion
Zen (zen.arado): and probably still the same
    Sunshine (szavanna): you liked?
Sunshine (szavanna): I will watch after this
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I liked much of it, but not that part
    Zen (zen.arado): no I didn't like
Zen (zen.arado): that situation I mean
Zen (zen.arado): I never saw the film
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): when I was 19 I wanted to be a minister
    Sunshine (szavanna): wow
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): when I was very little I said to my mom that I would be a nun
    Sunshine (szavanna): really
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but I wasn't Catholic
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): lol
Zen (zen.arado): you would have made a good one
Sunshine (szavanna): I never wanted to ;o)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I tried to get my friend Jeanette to make a plan with me... she could sing..
Zen (zen.arado): just thinking you have all the right qualities
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): we would "practice" in the church.. I standing at podium and she singing, lol
    Sunshine (szavanna): me? or lIz?
    Sunshine (szavanna): ;D
Zen (zen.arado): you could learn to preach
    Sunshine (szavanna): hehe
    Zen (zen.arado): Liz
    Sunshine (szavanna): lol
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :))
    Sunshine (szavanna): /me imagines
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): it is one of those prayers I'm happy wasn't answered
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): though for some reason I feel sad that it felt impossible
    Sunshine (szavanna): thank god hehe
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): hah
Zen (zen.arado): the opportunity should be there
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): although... in some churches, like UU.... one could minister "all religions"
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but... they are very political
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): or the tendency is to be so
Zen (zen.arado): a pastoral role is a caring role
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): so many traps
Zen (zen.arado): first minister we had had a nervous breakdown
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): when I felt I couldn't be a minister, I then wanted to be a minister's wife.. ack really happy to have dodged that one
Zen (zen.arado): they asked too much of him
    Sunshine (szavanna): lol
Sunshine (szavanna): I wanted to be a bride
    Sunshine (szavanna): ;p
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me smiles
Sunshine (szavanna): when I was small and they asked me
Zen (zen.arado): I never knew waht I wanted
Sunshine (szavanna): I always said ...when I grow up - I will be a bride
    Sunshine (szavanna): ;D
Zen (zen.arado): just drifted through life
Zen (zen.arado): and you got your wish Sunji
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
    Sunshine (szavanna): lol
    Sunshine (szavanna): sigh
Sunshine (szavanna): look what I found
    Zen (zen.arado): both of you
    Sunshine (szavanna): township art
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I still romanticize nundom :)
Zen (zen.arado): lively and colourful Sunji
    Sunshine (szavanna): nundom °͜°
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes very colorful
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but I know it is a fantasy now... and that no outer circumstance is the point
Zen (zen.arado): one on the right reminds me of Lawry
Zen (zen.arado): forget how to spell his name
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): oh!
    Sunshine (szavanna): Lawry?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): /me pans out
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I didn't see you rezzed things :P
    Sunshine (szavanna): ;))
Zen (zen.arado): an English painter who painted little figures set in Engish factory towns
Sunshine (szavanna): yes you were all into nuns and hoods ;p
    Sunshine (szavanna): ah
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
Sunshine (szavanna): there are many many pictures like this
    Sunshine (szavanna): I love them
    Sunshine (szavanna): see how bright
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): a lot of joy in them
Sunshine (szavanna): and those are shanti towns
    Zen (zen.arado): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lo...ddersfield.jpg
    Zen (zen.arado): Lowry
    Sunshine (szavanna): ah ty :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): oh wow yes Zen
    Sunshine (szavanna): ah yes °͜°
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): on the left, more like the islands
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Caribean art
    Sunshine (szavanna): yes
    Zen (zen.arado): https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=in...w=1472&bih=704
Sunshine (szavanna): that reminds me of
    Sunshine (szavanna): Rrrrrricoooo
    Sunshine (szavanna): ;D
Zen (zen.arado): have you heard of him?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :P
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): no
    Sunshine (szavanna): no I haven't
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): never
    Sunshine (szavanna): ah nice
Zen (zen.arado): oh? very famous in UK
    Sunshine (szavanna): industrial landscape
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Sunshine (szavanna): yes but I am a zulu :)
Sunshine (szavanna): you know when you go into the townships
Sunshine (szavanna): often it is just very dusty
Sunshine (szavanna): not like the pictures
Sunshine (szavanna): yet it becomes all colorful
    Sunshine (szavanna): on the canvas
    Sunshine (szavanna): :)
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well the paintings break through the dust
Zen (zen.arado): artists cheat Sunji :)
    Sunshine (szavanna): they do?
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): depends on what the point is, whether they cheat?
    Sunshine (szavanna): naughty artists °͜°
Zen (zen.arado): to me a photo is just a base
    Zen (zen.arado): I exagerrate colours
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): so does our mind.. to get a grip :)
Zen (zen.arado): wonder how much I can exagerrate stories
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): to convey something sometimes you have to take it to extreme proportions
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): that's also why the circus-try :)
Zen (zen.arado): I could have monsoon season arrive in Queensland when I was ther
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): circus-ry*
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Zen (zen.arado): though it was dry
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): well not so sure even in memoir it is okay to do that :))
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): unless you experienced a monsoon in some way
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): whispers: that was figurative :)
Zen (zen.arado): place I was ..a little town called Cloncurry has the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Australia
    Zen (zen.arado): 53 C I think it was
    Sunshine (szavanna): wow
    Sunshine (szavanna): super hot
    Zen (zen.arado): https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cl...w=1472&bih=704
Zen (zen.arado): and so dry it sucked all the moisture out of you
Zen (zen.arado): we drank bottles and bottles of lemonade and were still thirsty
Zen (zen.arado): they have sloar power now
    Zen (zen.arado): solar
Sunshine (szavanna): when I was in Tunis ... it also got very hot .... when I went outside ....things seemed to be like a mirage ...
    Sunshine (szavanna): forgot the word
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): that's it :)
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
Zen (zen.arado): yes was always a mirage on horizon
Zen (zen.arado): like a big ake
    Zen (zen.arado): lake
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Summer in Miami is like that... always seems the roads are wet but they are not
Sunshine (szavanna): but what is the word for it?
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): mirage is good
Sunshine (szavanna): "the view gets blurry"
Zen (zen.arado): but Miami is humid
Sunshine (szavanna): kk as long as you get it
Zen (zen.arado): high humidity is worse I think
    Zen (zen.arado): harder to bear
Sunshine (szavanna): its not easy yes
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): some days one doesn't want to walk to the mailbox
    Sunshine (szavanna): really
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): but the quality of brightness is hard to compare
Zen (zen.arado): did you see the photo I posted on FB of the snow?
Sunshine (szavanna): here we don't have high humidity
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): and the billions of greens
    Sunshine (szavanna): only in Durban
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): I didn't..hm
    Zen (zen.arado): https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater
Sunshine (szavanna): I rarely go to fb
Zen (zen.arado): this is about 2 miles from me
Sunshine (szavanna): go lol I mean browse
    Zen (zen.arado): higher up
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): Oh wow
    Zen (zen.arado): earlier this week
Zen (zen.arado): yet no snow where I am
    Zen (zen.arado): amazing
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): "we live in a beautiful world... yes we do yes we do...."
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): :)
    Sunshine (szavanna): wow!
    Sunshine (szavanna): is it real
Sunshine (szavanna): where was it taken?
Zen (zen.arado): just about two miles inland from where I live
    Zen (zen.arado): but going uphill
    Sunshine (szavanna): wow
Sunshine (szavanna): never seen anything like that
Zen (zen.arado): living beside the sea saves me
Sunshine (szavanna): lol someone wrote "FCUK!!"
    Zen (zen.arado): still snow here
    Zen (zen.arado): was snowing earlier
Sunshine (szavanna): wow but its almost april
    Zen (zen.arado): I know
Eliza (eliza.madrigal): is that the norm?
Zen (zen.arado): a late cold spell
    Zen (zen.arado): no
    Sunshine (szavanna): brrr
Sunshine (szavanna): actually finally its cold here
    Sunshine (szavanna): cool
Zen (zen.arado): this time last year it was in 20's
    Sunshine (szavanna): °͜°
    Eliza (eliza.madrigal): nice
    Zen (zen.arado): everyone sitting sun
