Adelene Dawner nudges Pema affectionately, but remains silent.
Pema Pera is wondering at the new colorscheme in his local chat window, having just updated viewer . .
Rowan Masala: what colors are there, Pema?
Pema Pera can hardly see what he is typing in that cyan, whatever color!
Pema Pera: can I change those?

    Pema Pera: Hi Geo!
    Rowan Masala: edit->prefs->text chat

vraja Rexen: your translator is very good
    Rowan Masala nods
    vraja Rexen: verry accurate
Rowan Masala: it's one of the best I've found
Rowan's translator: este una din cele mai bune le-am găsit

Geo Netizen: We tend to do that alot
    Rowan Masala smiles
    vraja Rexen: ??
    Rowan Masala: Play
Rowan Masala: the play part of Play as Being
    Geo Netizen nods
Pema Pera: now that we're talking about Southern Europe . . . Geo, you have been to Assisi, I understand?
Geo Netizen: also for some reason we tend to be cryptic
Pema Pera: I mentioned that I was deeply moved by the landscape and atmosphere there
Geo Netizen: or maybe that's just me :)
Pema Pera: and I understand you have a similar reaction?
Geo Netizen: No .... next trip is spain then after that I hope to get to Assisi
    Pema Pera: ah!
Geo Netizen mumbles at his fingers
Rowan Masala: The closest I'm getting to an escape in the next few months is Topsail Island in NC
Pema Pera: ah, I misunderstood you then, sorry
Rowan Masala: but I have a little house on the beach reserved for the week before the new year
Geo Netizen: That does sound nice
Pema Pera: yes, and hopefully not too cold
Rowan Masala: well, even if it is cold, I think it will be nice--hot cocoa and pajamas with the sound of the surf can't be a bad thing
Geo Netizen: If its above 0 then much warmer that it will be here
Geo Netizen: Besides those temps are good snuggle weather :)
Rowan Masala: hmmm, don't think there will be any snuggling unless I take my cat :)
vraja Rexen: i go sleep now...2 many hours awake....nice seeing you all
Rowan Masala: good to see you too, Vraja
    Rowan Masala: stay warm
Geo Netizen: nice to meet you Vraja
    Pema Pera: good night, Vraja!
Rowan Masala: Does anyone have any unusual traditions for Thanksgiving?
Geo Netizen see Steve typing madly and waits
    Rowan Masala laughs
stevenaia Michinaga: wonders why most holidays are one day when most of us (who are married) have two sets of parents to visit... except most jewish holidays, ofcourse
Rowan Masala: because life is meant to be about choice and the allocation of scarce resources?
stevenaia Michinaga: not sure that works
Geo Netizen: spoken like an economist
    Geo Netizen: :)
Rowan Masala: um, that was supposed to be a joke
Rowan Masala: doesn't come out well in text
Geo Netizen: I got it ... hence the :)
    Bell: *ding*
    Rowan Masala: 9 seconds, please
Geo Netizen thinks of new ways :) lol ??? Hmmmm
    Rowan Masala: thank you
stevenaia Michinaga: wonders if there are meditation traditions from colder climates?
Rowan Masala: it's pretty cold in Tibet, isn't it?
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, but didn;t it migrate there from India?
Rowan Masala: oh, originating in colder climates
    Rowan Masala: hmm
Geo Netizen: I think the origins were in India
    stevenaia Michinaga: warmer there
Rowan Masala: so you think there may be a connection between the origin of a meditative culture and heat?
stevenaia Michinaga: I just notice what meditations I do seems easier to sink into when it;s warm
    Rowan Masala smiles
Rowan Masala: I don't know enough about which cultures have indigenous meditative practices to know, but it's an interesting idea
Rowan Masala: you should ask a reference librarian :)
Geo Netizen: Meditation originated I think from Vedic Hinduism
Geo Netizen: Indian scriptures dating back 5000 years describe meditation techniques ...
    stevenaia Michinaga: I am
Rowan Masala: and spread from there to Buddhism, Shinto, etc., Geo?
Geo Netizen: Yes I think so
stevenaia Michinaga: I assume the monastic traditions of western religions are similar to meditation
Geo Netizen: They can be ....
Geo Netizen: We've had an exchange program between monasteries here in the west
Geo Netizen: with Buddhist monesteries, monks exchanging for a year
Pema Pera: did you get a chance to talk directly about practice, comparing notes so to speak?
Geo Netizen: The similarities always amaze me
Pema Pera: like what the trinity might be like in Buddhism, for example?
Geo Netizen: I have not had the opportunity do talk directly with them but only with those that hosted them
Geo Netizen: But the experience seems to be common, that all involved felt
Geo Netizen: that they fit very comfortably into the
Geo Netizen: routine ... environment ...
    Rowan Masala nods
Geo Netizen: of the others monastery
Pema Pera: insofar as prayer and meditation directly touches upon reality, you would think that there are clear similarities -- perhaps not so easy to see for scholars, but they should be easy to translate when you bring the practitioners together; do you know of any published article about that, Geo?
Geo Netizen: No ... I'm not aware of any but I can check
    Bell: *ding*
    Rowan Masala: 9 seconds, please
    Rowan Masala: thank you
Pema Pera: I would very much appreciate that, Geo
Geo Netizen: But your point about experience ....
Geo Netizen: I think that what was so striking ... the meditative or contemplative experience we very similiar
stevenaia Michinaga: but are non-monks in Eastern religions typically expected to meditatate as part of their routine, or just monks (and westerners)?
Pema Pera: speaking just for myself, I find so many points of reference for my own experiences in such diverse literature as medieval christian mysticism, sufi, hinduism, buddhism, taoism . . . .
    Geo Netizen nods
Pema Pera: . . . . the more so the more I get older and see more what is core and what is wrapping
    Rowan Masala nods
Pema Pera: every culture I think has lay practice and monastic practice, Steve
Geo Netizen: Yes ... the striping of the layers is common in both traditions
Pema Pera: what I like about SL is that you can combine them!
Pema Pera: every day the regularity of a monastery yet you can keep job and family!
    Pema Pera: first time in history, I think . . . .
    Rowan Masala smiles
stevenaia Michinaga: PaB as Monastery, pema?
    Pema Pera: sure
    stevenaia Michinaga: ...smile
Pema Pera: I mean a combination:
Geo Netizen: The play is a little different I think :)
Pema Pera: part monastery part lay practice
    stevenaia Michinaga: (p)lay practice
Pema Pera: that may be the lay part, Geo :-)
    Pema Pera: hehehe Steve!
    Geo Netizen laughs
Pema Pera: not "pray and work" but "pray and play"
Geo Netizen: to pray is to be
    Geo Netizen: Being and play
    Rowan Masala smiles
Rowan Masala: Pema and Geo, I am emailing you the following article:

Rowan Masala: I may send several pdfs
Geo Netizen: Yes ... please do when you have the time
