The Guardian for this meeting was Bleu Oleander. The comments are by Bleu Oleander.
It was a very quite Friday evening until Calvino came by and engaged me in an interesting conversation about the "Art of Being" project.
Bleu Oleander: hi Cal
--BELL--
Calvino Rabeni: :)
Bleu Oleander: how are you?
Calvino Rabeni: Good, although life is a little more complicated than usual lately
Bleu Oleander: complicated good or not so good?
Calvino Rabeni: Good complicated, rich opportunities, but ...
Bleu Oleander: did you decide to go to SF retreat?
Calvino Rabeni: there are olans to make, paperwork, lots of other ppl to coordinate with, mistakes to avoid, deadlines
Calvino Rabeni: *plans
Bleu Oleander: sounds like a lot of life
Calvino Rabeni: Yes, usually I have things pretty simple, then a few times a year money and time and different parties all seem to rush together unpredictably
Calvino Rabeni: You get double / triple booked, others make plans, cancel, or show up unexpectedly
Calvino Rabeni: So, all good, yes :)
Calvino Rabeni: But it rasises some adrenaline.
Bleu Oleander: which can be good
Calvino Rabeni: True, consistency can be a hobgoblin
Bleu Oleander: yes
Calvino Rabeni: PaB as "stress management" -- let's add it to the list :)
Bleu Oleander: yes, great
Calvino Rabeni: I'd enjoy doing more with the art project, but haven't had quite the time nor focus.
Calvino Rabeni: It's a fun project though
Bleu Oleander: yes, we may change it a bit for the next project
Calvino Rabeni: More particles, perhaps a texture?
Bleu Oleander: I was thinking one texture
Bleu Oleander: so that could introduce photography
Calvino Rabeni: Sounds reasonable, I can live with that
Bleu Oleander: maybe limiting colors
Calvino Rabeni: Although particles would be good to liberalize, IMVHO
Bleu Oleander: a creative use of particles would be nice
Calvino Rabeni: No policy on sound?
Bleu Oleander: haven't into'd sound yet .... could be a bit much for the environment
--BELL--
Bleu Oleander: but perhaps down the road .... a sound project would be nice. I like to limit options to inspire more creativity
Bleu Oleander: what do you think about even doing performance art?
Calvino Rabeni: What do you envision, for instance?
Bleu Oleander: I might reference a historical piece ... re-enact it using av's
Bleu Oleander: I've seen some done in sl and it was a lot of fun
Calvino Rabeni: BTW I think your concern with sound can be resolved by making it audible only within a short range of the artifact
Bleu Oleander: good for a group project
Calvino Rabeni: What performance did you see?
Bleu Oleander: how short a range can be done?
Bleu Oleander: a whisper is about 10m isn't it?
Calvino Rabeni: I think it's an arbitrary size coordinate box, judging by the documentation.
Calvino Rabeni: So - small as you want
Bleu Oleander: so that solves the problem :)
Bleu Oleander: can you upload sounds to sl? or I guess you can record them in sl?
Calvino Rabeni: There is also a way to do sound just to a specific avatar - if they "put on" a HUD then the resulting sound is only heard by the wearer
Bleu Oleander: oh yes, AM Radio had a sound using a HUD, so sure that too
Calvino Rabeni: That I don't know. I do know there is a 10-second maximum per piece, with some more effort to sequence multiple pieces
Bleu Oleander: might be beyond some of us but we could learn
Calvino Rabeni: The streaming would be another way, but would take some setup external to SL
Bleu Oleander: do you build a lot in sl?
Calvino Rabeni: Animations could be a fun part of SL art - the viewer becomes part of the form
Calvino Rabeni: No I have only done a few learning projects
Bleu Oleander: I like interactive art
Calvino Rabeni: Yes, that is the temptation / opportunity in SL
Bleu Oleander: I liked your piece for that reason
Calvino Rabeni: I thought of modifying it to store the different annoattions people added to it
Bleu Oleander: oh that would have been nice
Calvino Rabeni: It could then play them back autonomously
Calvino Rabeni: I like the idea of making it seem to verge on intelligence
Bleu Oleander: very good .... maybe your next piece?
Calvino Rabeni: with ability to sense agents in its vicinity, some "memory" etc. But not a simulation like a robot, just kind of in the boundaries
Calvino Rabeni: Yes, if I get the time. The next month will be busy. I hope this installaton is semi-permenent
Bleu Oleander: I think there's a lot of interest in the art projects ....
Calvino Rabeni: Yes, it is a good thing to have new creative projects pop up every now and then, to move things along
Our conversation on art would have to continue at some other time as a visitor to PaB arrived and asked that his name and subsequent conversation not be included on the website.
--BELL--
Bleu Oleander: so Cal I think i'm going to call it a night ... thanks for the art conversation :)
Calvino Rabeni: YW, Bleu
Calvino Rabeni: I'm glad you're promoting it
Bleu Oleander: thanks
Bleu Oleander: c u soon and enjoy the rest of your evening
Calvino Rabeni: Take care :)
