Wol Euler was guardian for this session.

    Wol Euler: buongiorno, qt
    Qt Core: Hi Wol
    Wol Euler: what's new?
Qt Core: i went to see the 3d Guernica, and as with the painting i can appreciate the effort but don't like it very much
    Wol Euler nods.

Wol Euler: I don't think people are supposed to *like* it, I believe that Picasso's intention was to make something horrible and upsetting
    Qt Core: i agree
Wol Euler: and I think he succeeded
Wol Euler: I'll have a look at that this afternoon
Qt Core: wondering at how rarely i go seeing/searching for paintings is it a decaying for of art ?
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: same here, although I have to admit that my RL gallery visits have also declined in the last few years
Wol Euler: if you mean "painting" itself, paint on canvas, I do still enjoy that greatly.
Qt Core: even sculpting, as for the announcement of new works i've heard is more engineering than classic marble hammering
    Wol Euler nods.
Qt Core: yes, but there are new great ones or we enjoy only old (maybe only a few decades old) ones
    Qt Core: ?
Wol Euler: oh yes, definitely new great paintings
Wol Euler: Ralph Fleck (I think that's the name) is somebody I discovered recently
Qt Core: good to know (that they exist and that i'm ignorant)
    Wol Euler: http://www.artnet.de/K%C3%BCnstler/ralph-fleck/
Qt Core: he paint books, yes, he can't be bad ;-)
    Wol Euler: heheheh
Wol Euler: I like his urban landscapes a lot
Wol Euler: if anything I think painting is coming back, after a hard couple of decades in which photography and installation sculptures made all the headlines
Wol Euler: it always disturbed me vaguely that Donald Judd didn't make his own sculptures, he designed them and had them built by furniture makers and shopfitters
Wol Euler: but I suppose that is no different from an architect having her designs built by a bricklayer :)
Qt Core: now photography is so technically easy... is this paintings revival some form of artist elitism ?
    Wol Euler: perhaps :)
Qt Core: or they are just luddites ?

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: or maybe it is a return of respect for "hand-work", for the ability to make things well
Wol Euler: it's funny that people say "anyone can do that" about painting, where it's manifestly not true, but not about photography where it obviuosly IS true
Qt Core: that's good, that anyone hit by something beautifu or interesting (for whatever reason) can save it wit a picture
    Wol Euler nods.
Qt Core: then there are all the trick a pro can make with the camera itself or photoshop & friends, but still no subject no picture
    Wol Euler nods.
Qt Core: the difference between the stick man averyone can draw and the vitruvian man is way greater than the everyday portrait pic i can take and a pulitzer pic
Wol Euler: agreed, and part of that is what I meant by hand-work
    Wol Euler: manual ability
Qt Core: wondering at the mess i'll end up in if i would ever try to paint (or try to develop my pic on my own)
Wol Euler: perhaps the easy and cheap "perfection" of computer images is related to the return to painting
Wol Euler: a desire for something not easy, not fast, not automatically perfect
Qt Core: the little imperfection may keep the eyes on the thing until we got the message, perhaps, while the perfect image let out attention to slip away ?
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: that sounds possible, yes
Wol Euler: that might be why black-and-white images are so strong ...

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: less perfect even when clearly an untreated no-tricks slice of life
Qt Core: in my room i have only one painting, the only one i liked between the ones my sister ever made
    Wol Euler smiles.
Qt Core: as it is art i never understood what it is about, ;-)
    Wol Euler: hehehhe
Wol Euler: did you ask her?
Qt Core: yes, it become even more puzzling
    Wol Euler: ha!
Qt Core: but i like the colours, red/yellow/brown family, mostly
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: and because it was by her, perhaps
Wol Euler: (reasons to like it)
Qt Core: not just for that, i don't like most of them ;-) but maybe the fact that just for once she let me have one of her work
    Wol Euler smiles.

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: I'm afraid I must go, I'm invited to a 3-year-old's birthday party :)
    Wol Euler grins.
Qt Core: you should go in your cat form :-)
    Wol Euler: heheh, if only!
    Qt Core: have fun!
Wol Euler: thank you, qt, I'm sure I will
    Wol Euler: enjoy the day.
    Qt Core: i'll try, bye
