2008.10.29 13:00 - A different "me"

The guardian for this session was Quilty Bookmite. The comments are his.

I arrived a little early but Wol was there before me checking on the listener device.

Wol Euler: hello quilty

Wol Euler: sorta. I wanted to be here to see if it started properly.
Quilty Bookmite: Looks OK.

Indeed it seemed so. I have removed the listener entries from the log.

Wol Euler: I think I figured out the reason why it sometimes didn't create a record for a session, particularly the 1 a.m. ones.
Wol Euler: because there wasn't a session.
Quilty Bookmite: Ah. :-)
Wol Euler: nobody came, nobody spoke -> nothing in teh database.
Wol Euler: works correctly.
Wol Euler: file that under: duh.
Quilty Bookmite: A lot of worry over not very much then. :-)
Wol Euler: hehehehe
Wol Euler: to be honest, I did find and fix a few bugs. But the real "problem" wasn't one.
Quilty Bookmite: I've had software problems I've worked on for hours, gone away and got some sleep, then woke up and thought "it's £%£"^ obvious what's wrong".
Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: that happens very often, actually.
Quilty Bookmite: Yes. To me too. :-)
Quilty Bookmite: It's usually a clue that I'm overworking.
Wol Euler: archimedes and his bathtub for example.
Wol Euler: well, yes, taht too :)

Doug arrives. He's not his usual pale self and has acquired some colour.

Quilty Bookmite: Hi Doug

doug Sosa: hi.
Wol Euler: Doug, you are person of colour. Wow.
Quilty Bookmite: Oh yes! You've just rezzed for me.
doug Sosa: oops my graphics card just crashed. back in a few.
Wol Euler: quite a nice surprise.
Quilty Bookmite: OK
Quilty Bookmite: Maybe the colour was too much for it.
Wol Euler: heheheheh
Quilty Bookmite: And Wol, you spell colour the proper way. :-)

Of course, there is no "proper" way. English is a complex multinational language which has different spellings in different places. However, the word colour is spelt color in the USA.

Quilty Bookmite: I'm gathering you spent some time in the UK.
Wol Euler: yes, and more significantly I grew up in Canada. We too can spell properly.
Quilty Bookmite: Of course. :-)

Quilty Bookmite: Don't get me started on Apple. Nearly as bad as Microsoft in their way.

I mean, why do I have to install iTunes if I just want Quicktime?

doug Sosa: no, the graphics card was overwhelemd with input and coped by going to pure random fractals.
Wol Euler: wow, sounds quite cool actually. If not very useable.
doug Sosa: well put.
Quilty Bookmite: Maybe you could sell it to a nightclub. :-)
doug Sosa: it does look like that but then the people are also fractalated, so they don't look so... soo..?
Wol Euler: hmmmm

Something slightly strange about Dougs face.

Wol Euler: well, it looks to me that you have sets of stripes all over it.

Quilty Bookmite: now I look closer it is rather.
Quilty Bookmite: Only on the face thought.
doug Sosa: hmm? i saw that when chosing , but thought it was just part of that process. wonder how i can get of them?
Quilty Bookmite: Match the shirt though.

Wol Euler: ah, probably that's it.

doug Sosa: what i was trying for was as natural as possible. didn't make it.
Quilty Bookmite: Probably did better than me. Mine is a bit dark.
Wol Euler had an impulse to walk behind Doug and look over your shoulder at your inventory folder. If only it worked that way!
doug Sosa: not demo so far as i know. i thought that was part of the charm!

doug Sosa: let's see if we can do better.

Doug asks a serious question and we discuss how we interact with the world and how we change that interaction depending on circumstances.

doug Sosa: How much has PaB become the way to interact with the world?
Quilty Bookmite: Sure. It's my favourite at the moment though.
doug Sosa: If apperances dance, what does being do?
Wol Euler: it's certainly changed how I interact with the world. I am much calmer and more relaxed. I think I even walk more slowly.
doug Sosa: me too!
Wol Euler: I put that down to what I've learned here.
Quilty Bookmite: Do you mean in a deliberate sense? Or do you mean simply it changes who you are and therefore you interact differently?
Wol Euler: not deliberately, no. I tjust happened.
doug Sosa: how much is 9 sec and how much isthis atmosphere, place and people and just learningto be together?
Quilty Bookmite: So how you interact in this case is secondary.
Wol Euler frowns. How do you mean, quilty?
Wol Euler: (doug, mostly atmosphere and learning-by-listening)
Quilty Bookmite: Well, you could interact differently because you are deliberately using a different persona...
Quilty Bookmite: Or it could be that you think differently on a fairly fundamental level.
Wol Euler: ah, I see. well, its not a deliberate policy change.
Quilty Bookmite: You are both saying it is the latter so the thinking differently comes first then the interafction.
doug Sosa: Interesting to me that you are so eas with"different persona" and drawn to it. I am still just trying to be me.
Wol Euler: perhaps I am too, I just have more me's.
Quilty Bookmite: But I bet even just trying to be you you react differently depending on who you talk to.

Fael appears outside the pavilion but disappears again shortly after.

Quilty Bookmite: So each of those ways of interacting is a persona even if you are not conscious of it.,
Wol Euler: butthat is true in SL too. I talk to Corvi differently than to Pema, even when we discuss PaB.
Quilty Bookmite: I think that's one thing meditation type practces do for me. I become more aware of these different personas.
Wol Euler: bye fael.

doug Sosa: i never did.
Wol Euler: SL is playing sillybuggers today.

Quilty Bookmite: Anyway, as I was saying, I become more aware of how I interact with people.
Quilty Bookmite: I guess that gives me the ability to change that interaction consciously.
Wol Euler: mmhmm, that is how it feels to e too. I am aware of the possibility of reacting differently.
doug Sosa: But in RL wouldn't i always be convinced it was "you"?
Wol Euler: sure, I suspect that man people don't notice.
Wol Euler: *many
Quilty Bookmite: Yes, but what is "me"? And which "me"?
Quilty Bookmite: I guess that someone in the acting profession would be very aware of their different personas.
doug Sosa: if you were different i'd never think yu were the same person. that i don't see you as two must be teling us something.
Quilty Bookmite: Since we are in SL, I have the possibility to look different and have a different name.
Quilty Bookmite: My persona may still betray who I am or maybe I could change it sufficiently that you wouldn;t guess.
doug Sosa: and i have not yet played much with that. Still trying to be me.
Quilty Bookmite: I could always try talking in text speak, although my head might implode.
Wol Euler: I'm not _trying_ to be different, Doug. It isn't a performance, not role playing.
doug Sosa: but when you chose who to look like? Play? Intent?
Quilty Bookmite: Likewise. I don;t play different people, I'm just a different me in different circumstances.
Wol Euler: exactly.
Wol Euler: I choose an av for specific reasons, usually. My alt goes to differrnt meetings than I do. we both have SL commitments
doug Sosa: wow, a committee :)
Quilty Bookmite: Two hectic social calendars. :-)
Wol Euler: I've noticed that I do choose the other most often when I am feeling down, needing encouragement and support.
Wol Euler: which I get in that body from mentoring, teaching newbies the ropes.
doug Sosa: so the reality is (hmm?) i hardly know you.
Wol Euler smiles. As well as I know you, perhaps.

Referring to the fact that Fael arrived and everyone else left. 

Fael disappears again then reappears a little while later. I start rambling on about the weather but Fael's mind is obviously elsewhere. After a while we give up.

Fael Illyar: Hello Again, Quilty ... I keep getting my connection cut.
Quilty Bookmite: thought so.
Fael Illyar: first my wireless refused to work and then I manage to upset this cord I managed to find to plug into my laptop
Quilty Bookmite: Wireless is hopeless, although I'm using it myself.
Quilty Bookmite: I also have ethernet through power to fall back on.
Fael Illyar: it worked well enough at IAS :P
Quilty Bookmite: I think it depends on how many of your neighbours are using wireless.
Fael Illyar: I have just one.
Quilty Bookmite: Should be OK then. :-)
Quilty Bookmite: It is a flakey technology though.
Fael Illyar: it did work for most of the day, then suddenly nothing

Fael Illyar: Quite good recently :)
Quilty Bookmite: Glad to hear it!
Quilty Bookmite: Me too.
Quilty Bookmite: However, I did get a shock last night. My daughter woke up crying with a nasty hacking cough.
Quilty Bookmite: She's fine though. Still got the cough but quite happy.
Quilty Bookmite: At the same time I looked out the window and it was snowing!
Quilty Bookmite: A rare occurance at this time of year in this part of the world.
Quilty Bookmite: I think I'm rambling now. :-)
Fael Illyar: strange things happen all the time :)
Quilty Bookmite: Indeed. As snow goes though it was disappointing...
Quilty Bookmite: Was only about an inch of snow and by morning it was all frozen underneath.
Fael Illyar: oh, slippery?
Fael Illyar: it's been raining around here recently.
Quilty Bookmite: Yes. A little concerning since my wife is heavily pregnant.
Quilty Bookmite: It's nearly all melted now though.
Quilty Bookmite: YOu can tell I'm English. Obsessed with the weather. :-)
Quilty Bookmite: Still, English weather is one of the most interesting things about this country. :-)
Fael Illyar: well, it's a major part of what makes for things

Fael Illyar: although, on the other hand ,quite minor ... depends on how you view things :)
Quilty Bookmite: Since we spend so much of our time indoors, not as significant as it used to be.
Fael Illyar: yes, a bit less significant :)
