Adelene Dawner: You may've missed the beginning of this particular thought-thread, Gaya. I thought that too, at first. When we're talking about 'purpose', I actually don't automatically think of this.
Gaya Ethaniel: one is on the edge of the cliff, all purposes one has just go out of the window in my experience... does one need a purpose in life to live?

Adelene Dawner: Something else I want to bring up (conversation may've wandered through this point, still reading): To achieve any real result, the drive to accomplish it has to be bigger than your self... really, it does. If you're 'being compassionate' for personal glory, that's not really compassion, and it's *blazingly obviously different* from some angles, and it leads to a completely different result than true compassion, which is selfless.

Adelene Dawner: Corvi was very very close, and entirely accurate in a day to day sense. You can't help people very well if you're not in good shape yourself.

Adelene Dawner: I think you all know I've walked through some very dark places in my life. What I learned from that is that it's possible to survive more than you think you can, and come out wiser, if you have the strength to do so.
Adelene Dawner: And that 'strength' takes many forms.
Adelene Dawner: Staying strong in those ways is 'taking care of yourself'.
Adelene Dawner: And any real accomplishment will mean walking through those dark places on the way. If it was easy, it'd've been done already.

Adelene Dawner: I don't know, in general. In my case, it's related to the events of my childhood... but the worldview that is central to my puprose was guiding my reactions to those even then.

Adelene Dawner: ooh, a quote, where 'shut up and multiply' is shorthand for 'go do the work already': Altruism isn't the warm fuzzy feeling you get from being altruistic. If you're doing it for the spiritual benefit, that is nothing but selfishness. The primary thing is to help others, whatever the means. So shut up and multiply!
Adelene Dawner: And I say also this to Corvuscorva Nightfire: That if you set aside your regret for all the spiritual satisfaction you could be having - if you wholeheartedly pursue the Way, without thinking that you are being cheated - if you give yourself over to rationality without holding back, you will find that rationality gives to you in return.
