The Guardian for this meeting was Riddle Sideways. The comments are by Riddle Sideways, joined by Yakuzza, Arisia, Tess, Fox, oO0Oo, Alfred and Varuna.
Title was almost "Baked in Reflections".
Riddle Sideways: Hello Yak
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: you're here early
Riddle Sideways: Hi Ariasia
Arisia Vita: Hi all, nice to see you
Yakuzza Lethecus: hi ari and riddle
Riddle Sideways: umm, did Aph leave that here for some reason?
Riddle Sideways: Hi Tess
Tess Aristocrat: hi
Yakuzza Lethecus: not that i could think about
Yakuzza Lethecus: hey tess
Yakuzza Lethecus: hello sam
Riddle Sideways: o Hi oO
Yakuzza Lethecus: hello fox :)
Riddle Sideways: Hi Fox, long time no see :)
Fox Monacular: Hi Yaku, Riddle:)
Fox Monacular: (I don't see anyone yet, loading:)
Tess Aristocrat: hi Sam, Fox
Riddle Sideways: always wished to be a cloud av
Tess Aristocrat: haha
Fox Monacular: oh, now I see!, hi Arisia, Tess, Samuo
oO0Oo Resident: Hi riddle, Fox, Yaku, Arisia, and Tess. :)
Riddle Sideways: ok, so what is that sculture that Aph put here?
Riddle Sideways: is it an ice sculpture?
Riddle Sideways: or a point somebody was making in another session
Tess Aristocrat: Actually, that was in the middle of the fountain the other day..someone then moved it.
Fox Monacular: nice:)
oO0Oo Resident: I think an initial experiment with making an ice reflection type thing for the show.. not sure
Tess Aristocrat: there you go ㋡
Riddle Sideways: ty
Riddle Sideways: has any/every body else started playing with reflections
Riddle Sideways: interesting that SL can not make a mirror
Tess Aristocrat: physical SL reflections?
Fox Monacular: what a great project! (too bad I have no time:)
Riddle Sideways: that is one very literal take on Bleu's wording
Tess Aristocrat: *thinks..what an interesting 'app.'
oO0Oo Resident: I was just at the prim workshop having a bit of a fumble ;)
Tess Aristocrat: *knows of a way it could be done..
Riddle Sideways listens
Tess Aristocrat: When you walk up to some places..
Tess Aristocrat: you see where they ask if they can put your profile pic on display
oO0Oo Resident: nods
Tess Aristocrat: I wonder if we combined all our efforts what we could acheive
Riddle Sideways: found that water textures reflect, but will not stand up on edge
Riddle Sideways: what about the profile pic?
Tess Aristocrat: ㋡ well, you'd have to have your avvy's face on your profile pic
Tess Aristocrat: and it could use the same application
Fox Monacular: (oups, seems like I have to go... have a great day everyone!)
Tess Aristocrat: for the mirror
Tess Aristocrat: bye Fox
oO0Oo Resident: Bye Fox
Riddle Sideways: bye fox
Riddle Sideways: there are youTube videos on SL mirrors, but they all are tricks
Riddle Sideways: of turning the camera to point down at water
Riddle Sideways: well, there are some settings in each viewer that make it work a little better for you and your camera
Riddle Sideways: but not for everybody else
Tess Aristocrat: nods..
--BELL--
Tess Aristocrat: funny, I am on viewer 1 and still no difficulties except for some of the new shoes which make feet appear odd and partially invisible at best
Tess Aristocrat: I actually downloaded and went on viewer 2 or whatever the latest upgrade and put on some glasses and they made my neck look like a toothpick :D
Riddle Sideways: yes, must keep backward compatible
Tess Aristocrat: just seems that newer is always improved
Tess Aristocrat: or rather isn't
Yakuzza Lethecus: yesterday i wanted to play a bit with mesh and had to recognize that there is a special permission needed to upload those
Tess Aristocrat: nods
Riddle Sideways: oh, not tried that yet
Tess Aristocrat: is mesh a bit like sculpt?
oO0Oo Resident: how does one get that permission yaku?
Tess Aristocrat: is it low prim?
Yakuzza Lethecus: by doing a tutorial and giving the lindens payment information as it seems in the profile
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i just did the tutorial 15 minutes ago
Riddle Sideways: was it worth it for learning?
Yakuzza Lethecus: a bit on copyright, but it´s easy to cheat and the questions are usually selfevident
Yakuzza Lethecus: like if you would think that it´s allowed to make a SL shoebrand called ,,n1ke"
Riddle Sideways: one way to make us read and sign the user agreement
Tess Aristocrat: laughs..
oO0Oo Resident: Second Life is rather unique in that it allows a mechanism for ysers to hold the intellectual property rights to their creations?
oO0Oo Resident: *users
Tess Aristocrat: Being human..knowing human nature, there will be many generic copies of mesh to come..
Tess Aristocrat: or just having seen what I've seen since I've been here, anyway ㋡
Alfred Kelberry: hi :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: i was never into sl building but i could very much consider learning an external application for modelling, just sl never really felt worth the learning
Tess Aristocrat: Alfred ㋡
Riddle Sideways: Hi, Boxy (you're early)
oO0Oo Resident: Boxy :)
Alfred Kelberry: good to see you all
Alfred Kelberry: riddle :)
Alfred Kelberry: slowly going in sync
Riddle Sideways: N'sync :}
Alfred Kelberry: btw, i've seen an interesting comics today. i'd like to share with you.
Alfred Kelberry: http://assets.cubbi.es/uploads/f3cd4...fb594938da.gif
Riddle Sideways: like it
Alfred Kelberry: also a saying: age will flatten a man
Riddle Sideways: for a cardboard doggy, you sure are profound and wise
Alfred Kelberry: *purrs*
Riddle Sideways: or you quote good material
BTW - have had this cartoon to add for some days:
oO0Oo Resident: RE: reflections: similar problem to searching for images of mirrorlike surfaces... very hard to find anything compelling that is not contextual, to be used as a texture, because the more reflective it is, the more it depends on its surroundings to manifest as anything that looks real
Alfred Kelberry: the quote i actually took from one of my fave movies "no country for old men"
--BELL--
Alfred Kelberry: *omms on sam's comment*
Alfred Kelberry: i like reflection in puddles
Alfred Kelberry: turning the world upside down
Riddle Sideways: how to build reflections
Alfred Kelberry: hi, varuna
Riddle Sideways: Hi Varuna
Varuna Radikal: hello :)
Varuna Radikal: namasté to all
oO0Oo Resident: http://is.gd/cZcYe2
oO0Oo Resident: Hi Varuna
Alfred Kelberry: riddle, i think the only thing that reflects in sl is water
Varuna Radikal: yes it is so
Varuna Radikal: there are tricks to do mirrors
Varuna Radikal: but not effective ones
Alfred Kelberry: what tricks?
Varuna Radikal: @least not in this version
Varuna Radikal: u can bake in reflections
Oh, that is a nice turn of phrase... "Bake in Reflections"
Varuna Radikal: i used to own a house with windows like that
Varuna Radikal: reflected non existing trees :)
Riddle Sideways: ah, thanks Sam. during research visited the MC Echer house in SL
Alfred Kelberry: ah, well, that's a fake :)
Varuna Radikal: yes indeed
Varuna Radikal: pretty much as everything in sl lol
Alfred Kelberry: me is real!
Riddle Sideways: I'm not
Varuna Radikal: cept for the people that is
Alfred Kelberry: wuff!
Varuna Radikal: lol
Alfred Kelberry: :)
Varuna Radikal: yeah and i swivel my tail irl lol
Riddle Sideways: sorry, that was a joke for Storm to read
Varuna Radikal: lol its ok
Varuna Radikal: whats the subject 2day?
Riddle Sideways: many topics, mostly about an art porject in here
Varuna Radikal: cool
Varuna Radikal: what u guys building?
Riddle Sideways: on making ice sculptures on reflections
Varuna Radikal: nice
Varuna Radikal: reflections can be faked if u bake in textures
Varuna Radikal: in a 3d proggy like blender
Riddle Sideways: had a good idea, but impossible for my skills to build
oO0Oo Resident: *cool* is right! based on ice sculptures with theme of "reflection"
Varuna Radikal: lol loved the pun
Varuna Radikal: cool reflective ice
Alfred Kelberry: rl ice chiseling would be fun
Riddle Sideways: wonder if a camera scrupt could project on a browser frame
Varuna Radikal: maybe a full ice room with ice sculptures
Varuna Radikal: well u can use browser textures on viewer 2 only
Riddle Sideways: yes, the village square is going to be the ice rink soon
Varuna Radikal: thus some wouldnt see
Varuna Radikal: i should get out my skates then
Riddle Sideways: and ice sculptures around the edges
Varuna Radikal: the best most common approach would be to build the whole set on blender
Varuna Radikal: as sculpties
Varuna Radikal: and bake in textures to show reflections and shadows
Alfred rezs another twisted cone with ice texture
Riddle Sideways: ok, another point made
Alfred Kelberry: if you're a 3d guy :)
Varuna Radikal: the one trick there is not to make em too big
Varuna Radikal: as textures are 256x256 max
Varuna Radikal: thus a large sculpture would look nasty unless u break it up
oO0Oo Resident: I think actually 1024x1024
Varuna Radikal: but it would look realistic to a certain extent
Varuna Radikal: i stand corrected sam :)
Varuna Radikal: been a while since i built anything lol
Varuna Radikal: i used to build dungeons to order and baking in the textures was a hassle but looked quite realistic
oO0Oo Resident: I just happened to be reading this useful page on SL limits... normally I would not know such things: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits
Alfred Kelberry: you should come to the prim workshop this week :)
Alfred Kelberry: share your skill of awesome reflections
Varuna Radikal: i can barely manage to log in for a few minutes a week
Varuna Radikal: yet theres a good tutorial
Varuna Radikal: actually several
Alfred Kelberry: bad time management?
Varuna Radikal: lemme get u a link
Riddle Sideways: please remind what day and time the workshop is?
Varuna Radikal: lol more like complicated life :)
Alfred Kelberry: yea, they all say that :)
Varuna Radikal: lol
Varuna Radikal: well maybe life is just complex, period
Riddle Sideways: again, depends on how you look at it
Varuna Radikal: indeed riddle
--BELL--
Varuna Radikal: ok guys have a look here
Varuna Radikal: http://blog.machinimatrix.org/
Alfred Kelberry: yes, but eventually, if you don't have time, you're doing it wrong :)
Varuna Radikal: they carry several tutorials on using blender and sculties and baking in shadows
Alfred Kelberry: either too many obligations or distractions
Riddle Sideways: thank you
Varuna Radikal: true boxy
Varuna Radikal: i guess its all a priority issue
oO0Oo Resident: Thanks very much Varuna.. a helpful resource
Alfred Kelberry: yes, this part is tricky
Varuna Radikal: several videos there
Varuna Radikal: will walk u through from newb to pro
Alfred Kelberry: oh, there. got distracted and missed the pause.
Riddle Sideways: ummm, good time management to skip the pauses ? :)
Alfred Kelberry: hmm :)
Varuna Radikal: lol
Alfred Kelberry: as varuna said: priority issue :)
oO0Oo Resident: maybe some icicles hanging from the edges of the Pavilion would look good. Wonder if they could be made to drip ;)
Alfred Kelberry: yes, sam! agreed
Alfred Kelberry: particles can make dripping water
Varuna Radikal: mind u it might get laggy though
Riddle Sideways: complicated script: if( temp > 0C) start drip
oO0Oo Resident: lol Riddle.. SSL has made some really nice watery and icy sculptures in the past
Alfred Kelberry: that neko girl is handy
oO0Oo Resident: SophiaSharon I ought say here
Varuna Radikal: u might try and mix some fractals in to make the ice
Alfred Kelberry: i wish she'd come more often
Varuna Radikal: will look more "natural"
oO0Oo Resident: like looking in a mirror
oO0Oo Resident: :)
Varuna Radikal: another thing that can be done is to change through script the scult texture
Varuna Radikal: thus u would get moving ice sculptures
Varuna Radikal: sculpt*
Riddle Sideways: was thinking of doing that
Varuna Radikal: i should get my gear again and try my hands at meshes
Riddle Sideways: got distracted at an animated avitar skin shop
Varuna Radikal: they sound great albeit complicated especially as only viewer2 compat viewer can see them
Riddle Sideways: wonder how ;many that affects
Varuna Radikal: duno though i only know of 2 viewers that can
Riddle Sideways: should the whole art porject be accessible to all
Varuna Radikal: the prob is most old time users resist moving into vewer2 browsers
Varuna Radikal: i mean they shifted everything around
Varuna Radikal: u feel like a newb all over again
Riddle Sideways: the strange idea of putting the inventory on the left side is outragious
Varuna Radikal: gotta run guys
Varuna Radikal: happy building
oO0Oo Resident: I watched ome tutorilas recently that demonstrated hoe Phoenix Firestorm could be made to work much like Phoenix and other older viewers
Varuna Radikal: :)
Riddle Sideways: ok, thanks and bye
oO0Oo Resident: Thanks Varuna.. appreciated the tips
Tess Aristocrat: I'm off as well, take care everyone.
Riddle Sideways: ok, bye tess
oO0Oo Resident: Bye tess :)
Arisia Vita: I too must fly, it was great being with you all
Riddle Sideways: ah reflections
--BELL--
oO0Oo Resident: Take care Arisia :)
Riddle Sideways: bye Ari, btw nice textured cloths
Arisia Vita: ty
Arisia Vita: be well and happy
Riddle Sideways: e.g. in viewer2.0 the camera would have been handy right then , but hard to find now :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: be well all of you
oO0Oo Resident: You too yaku
Riddle Sideways: well folks, if go manage time today, can come back and play later :)
Riddle Sideways: bye yak
oO0Oo Resident: Riddle :)
Riddle Sideways: boxy, can you remove that before Storm has to?
oO0Oo Resident: :)
Riddle Sideways: it is very nice, but
Yakuzza Lethecus: huhu boxy
