    We begin with the Theme

stevenaia Michinaga: there is a theme this week of Compassion, but we haven;t started yet
    Pila Mulligan: nice theme

    --BELL--

    Pila Mulligan: compassion
Lila Darkmatter: yawning too much - goodness, nice to see you all but I think, zzzz
    Lila Darkmatter: <3
    Bleu Oleander: (((Lila)))
    Bleu Oleander: zzzz well
Pila Mulligan: bye Lila, sweet dreams
stevenaia Michinaga: night Lila, glad we helped with getting you off to bed
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Lila Darkmatter: thank you, very much so :))
    Lila Darkmatter: night
Pila Mulligan: I think of compassion as the foundation ethic of Buddhism
Bleu Oleander: hopefully the foundation of any world view
Pila Mulligan: it would be nice
    Bleu Oleander: !!
stevenaia Michinaga: looking at "compassion" in wikipedia, someone put a sculpture of the female compassion from Epcot center in forida as the personification of Compassion
stevenaia Michinaga: not sure anything at Disney can be related to compassion
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: is there a genuine distinction between compassion and love?
Bleu Oleander: one could say that there shouldn't be, however different kinds of love and different concepts of compassion?
stevenaia Michinaga: some loves are not compassionate and relate very lettle to another individual
Bleu Oleander: yes, that's what I was thinking
Bleu Oleander: depends how you define the words
Pila Mulligan: the wiki and dictionary defintions place the suffering of others in describing compassion as how to approach that suffering -- seems Buddhist :)
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, wonders if there's as many flavors of compassion as there are for love
Pila Mulligan: love need not be limited to others suffering i guess
stevenaia Michinaga: love can out a burdon on others
    Pila Mulligan: yes it can
Bleu Oleander: seems a goal of widening our sphere of caring/compassion would be a good one
Pila Mulligan thinks of the several distinct greek terms for love: familial, romantic, divine
stevenaia Michinaga: is compassion self serving, must it be an action not jsut a goal
Bleu Oleander: well perhaps starts as a goal that leads to action
Pila Mulligan: in an evolutionary sense I think both compassion and love are self-serving -- they lift civilization up
Bleu Oleander: in an ideal scenario
    stevenaia Michinaga: self meaning all?
    stevenaia Michinaga: all selfs
Pila Mulligan: self = self and all :)
    Pila Mulligan: yes
    Pila Mulligan: atman
    stevenaia Michinaga: nods
    --BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: seems compassion came before love
    stevenaia Michinaga: Pila poofs
Bleu Oleander: poof came before love
    stevenaia Michinaga: wb pila
    Pila Mulligan: ty
    Bleu Oleander: hi again Pila
    stevenaia Michinaga: :
    stevenaia Michinaga: 0
    Pila Mulligan: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: I was saying that compassion seems to come before love
Pila Mulligan: hmm, in what sense?
stevenaia Michinaga: evalutionary, can you have love w/o compassion
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: the emotions feel similar
    Bleu Oleander: yes
Pila Mulligan: but maybe their spectrum of feelings differ
    Pila Mulligan: their scope
    stevenaia Michinaga: which?
Pila Mulligan: the range of love seems greater than compassion to me
Pila Mulligan: the number of situations where it arises
stevenaia Michinaga: nods, and even to the point of currupt love
    Pila Mulligan: yes
Bleu Oleander: I think it depends on how you define love and compassion ... both have degrees of strength
Pila Mulligan: maybe jusyt the term love is more varied
    Pila Mulligan: yes
stevenaia Michinaga: thinking here are fewer degees of compassion, less room for compassin "abuse", I can't actually think of any
stevenaia Michinaga: but there can be violence with some formes of love
stevenaia Michinaga: comsuming love of come types
Pila Mulligan: in the Buddhism formula, as I understand it, giving up desire is a predicate to realizing genuine compassion
Pila Mulligan: love + desire is not uncommon
stevenaia Michinaga: where as some forms of love lead to power possessiveness
stevenaia Michinaga: but being consumed by compassion leads to ......love?
    stevenaia Michinaga: love of all
    Pila Mulligan: all one :)
Bleu Oleander: at least to a wider circle of love perhaps

    --BELL--

Pila Mulligan: well, time for me to wander on, nice to see you Bleu and Steve
Bleu Oleander: yes, nice to see you too Pila
Pila Mulligan: may you be filled with love and compassion :)
Bleu Oleander: have a nice evening
stevenaia Michinaga: night Pila, thinking of the highest examples of Compassion
    Bleu Oleander: ty!
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: gtsy
    Pila Mulligan: aloha `oe
Bleu Oleander: I should be off too
    Bleu Oleander: night steve
    Bleu Oleander: take care
