The Guardian for this meeting was Agatha Macbeth. The comments are by Agatha Macbeth. The first part consisted largely of sillyness between Wol and me. Then we got (semi) serious.
Wol Euler: aggerses
--BELL--1300
Agatha Macbeth: Wollie ♥
Agatha Macbeth waves to K
Wol Euler: korel is probably afk at work
Wol Euler: how are you?
Agatha Macbeth: Yes, I assume so
Agatha Macbeth: She ought to sit down at least tho :p
Wol Euler: :)
Agatha Macbeth: I'm fine
Agatha Macbeth: How's the orcs?
Wol Euler: fighting back today, they rallied overnight
Agatha Macbeth: Little buggers
Wol Euler: probably in all day tomorrow, asked for cover for my morning session
Agatha Macbeth: Aww
Agatha Macbeth: Nobody will turn up anyway probably
Wol Euler: yeah
Wol Euler: but still ...
Agatha Macbeth nods
Agatha Macbeth: Hope you're staying healthy
Wol Euler: trying
Wol Euler: I dreamed about trains last night, probably the result of talking about going to Venice
Agatha Macbeth: Thought that was gondolas
Wol Euler: gondolas are once you get to venice
Agatha Macbeth: Ah
Wol Euler: gondola through the alps would be difficult
Agatha Macbeth: You could push harder
Wol Euler: me push? I'm the paying passenger!
Agatha Macbeth: A paying pusher then
Wol Euler: does not compute
Wol Euler: hello korel
Agatha Macbeth: You could tell them to push off
Agatha Macbeth: Osiyo K
Korel Laloix smiles
Korel Laloix: brb
Agatha Macbeth: Looks like an in and out day
Wol Euler: as the bishop said
Agatha Macbeth: Check
Agatha Macbeth: The king said OK mate
Wol Euler: right then
Wol Euler: said Fred
Agatha Macbeth: With the bald head
Agatha Macbeth: He was deeply dippy I believe
Wol Euler: so they say
Wol Euler: but he sure was sexy
Agatha Macbeth: For his shirt yes
Wol Euler nods.
Agatha Macbeth: Cozy Powell never forgave him
Wol Euler: but Cozy's uncle Baden did
Agatha Macbeth: Or Enoch
Wol Euler: Enoch forgive somebody? not likely
Wol Euler: unless he softened drastically
Agatha Macbeth: It's OK, they were white
Wol Euler: anyway :) nice practice for Friday :)
Agatha Macbeth: What is?
Wol Euler: our silliness just then
Agatha Macbeth: Are you going to be silly on Friday then?
Wol Euler: evening yes
Wol Euler: I'll be back by then
Agatha Macbeth: OK Arnie
Wol Euler: but boss wants afternoon off so I have to be in during the morning to discuss what's needed
Korel Laloix: Back... smiles
Agatha Macbeth: Bosses eh
--BELL--1315
Agatha Macbeth: Hello back
Korel Laloix: How is everone today?
Agatha Macbeth: Rather silly it seems
Alfred Kelberry: hi
Agatha Macbeth: Shhhhhhhh
Alfred Kelberry: 3 lovely girls
Agatha Macbeth: and a dog
Agatha Macbeth: Must be a story there somewhere
Alfred Kelberry: yep
Wol Euler: tired, korel
Agatha Macbeth: Aww
Wol Euler: had to think too much today (and yesterday)
Agatha Macbeth: Rest your brain on my lap
Alfred Kelberry: :)
Alfred Kelberry: what did you think about?
Wol Euler: staircases and toilets and dressing rooms, mostly
Wol Euler: showers
Wol Euler: ramps
Alfred Kelberry: nice
Alfred Kelberry: btw, you reminded me...
Agatha Macbeth: Guard turrets? Machine gun emplacements?
Wol Euler: not that, alas
Agatha Macbeth: Not very well fortified then
Wol Euler: hardly at all
Wol Euler: just a security card on a chain
Wol Euler: some wire fences
Agatha Macbeth: 'Wait til you see the whites of their pants soldier'
Wol Euler: modern factories are funny things
Alfred Kelberry: woly, this guy was assigned in school to design the worst possible floor plan for a house
Wol Euler: huge and depopulated
Alfred Kelberry: http://i.imgur.com/sN8dj.jpg
Agatha Macbeth: Yes, hilarious
Wol Euler: this building is around 25000 square metres, a quarter million square feet, but will house 120 people at most
Agatha Macbeth: Most factories are huge and depopulated these days
Agatha Macbeth: 'I know, let's get six people to do the work of 200'
Alfred Kelberry: ah, a factory
Wol Euler: that, or in china
Agatha Macbeth: Ah so
Alfred Kelberry: 120 may even be a lot by modern factory standards
Wol Euler: yes, actually, 75 is the largest shift on the factory floor
Wol Euler: the other 50 are management, not actually in the factory as such at all
Alfred Kelberry: almost 1:1 relation to manager/worker :)
Agatha Macbeth: A certain ratio
Wol Euler: oh oh oh oh, here we go
Agatha Macbeth: Where are we going?
Alfred Kelberry: what kind of factory? what do they produce?
Wol Euler: to tiger mountain, aggers
Wol Euler: they make the bitey bits for earthmoving and mining and tunnel-boring machines
Alfred Kelberry: i know a nice song about a tiger
Agatha Macbeth: By strategy?
Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: isn
Alfred Kelberry: woly, oh - germans are good at it
Wol Euler: isn't that where the certain ratio comes from?
Wol Euler: very :)
Agatha Macbeth: Thought it was a new wave band from Manchester
Wol Euler: yes, but they named themselves after Eno's song
Agatha Macbeth: Oh
Agatha Macbeth: Never knew that
Wol Euler: the bits are mostly ceramic actually
Alfred Kelberry: "What do tigers dream of, when they take a little tiger snooze..."
Wol Euler: bite through granite, but the thing itself is ceramic
Wol Euler: quite amazing
Agatha Macbeth: I'm a tiger
Agatha Macbeth: You're a dog
Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: me too
Wol Euler: earth dog
Alfred Kelberry: "Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her catwoman suit."
Agatha Macbeth: Dunno what Alf is
Wol Euler: oh, I thought you meant boxy
Agatha Macbeth: I'd love to maul Halle Berry in her catwoman suit
--BELL--1330
Alfred Kelberry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmTuDWkoKss
Wol Euler chuckles.
Korel Laloix: Me too... smiles
Korel Laloix: Heya
Wol Euler: hello xir
Alfred Kelberry: woly, what part do you design? office quarters?
Agatha Macbeth: Why did I read that as Hanover?
Alfred Kelberry: xiri!
Agatha Macbeth: Hello Xira
Xirana Oximoxi: hello everyone:)
Zon Kwan: heya
Wol Euler: hello zen
Alfred Kelberry: passionate catalan woman :)
Xirana Oximoxi: hello Zon:)
Wol Euler: I'm not actually designing it as such, I'm just making it work
Agatha Macbeth: Was that swedish?
Wol Euler: boss says "changing rooms go there", I make sure they actually do
Alfred Kelberry: woly, approving toilets placement? :)
Wol Euler: sorry, zon, thought you were zen :)
Xirana Oximoxi: mighty...I like your smile ...in the picture:))
Zon Kwan: sorry to dissapoint you
Agatha Macbeth: Growwwwwl
Wol Euler: :)
Wol Euler: not disappointed
Agatha Macbeth: Hi Zon
Zon Kwan: hehe
Wol Euler: not in that shirt :)
Xirana Oximoxi: as a new guardian you look very gentle :)
Agatha Macbeth: He's too sexy for his shirt
Zon Kwan: blushes
Alfred Kelberry: woly, how does the boss get those changing rooms ideas?
Wol Euler: winning hand :) look at the back
Wol Euler: hard to say where ideas come from, boxy
Wol Euler: some things are obvious
Agatha Macbeth: Has the boss ever met Llewelyn-Bowen?
Wol Euler: like "put the changing rooms between the entrance and the factory floor"
Wol Euler: I could ask, aggers
Agatha Macbeth: Please do
Alfred Kelberry: woly, reminds me when a vp says "i'd like this button to go over here" referring to ui :)
Agatha Macbeth: Arturo?
Wol Euler: there are some cosmetic changes, yes, but few. these are sensible, pragmatic changes
Agatha Macbeth: That sounds good
Wol Euler: it's enjoyable, I have a greater sense of accomplishment from that than from prettying up the plans
Agatha Macbeth: Go forth young Wol
Alfred Kelberry: woly, who does the actual design? i guess those folks (including you presumably) have to be familiar with the industry to make it happen
Alfred Kelberry: domain knowledge
Wol Euler: we don't lay out the factory, the company does that themselves
Wol Euler: we just put a box around their machines
Alfred Kelberry: ah, i see
Wol Euler: production planning is a separate skill, nothing to do with us at all
Alfred Kelberry: right
Agatha Macbeth: Bet you still get blamed when it goes wrong tho
Wol Euler: of course
Wol Euler: the architect's first role and duty is "whipping post"
Wol Euler: "something went wrong! Blame the architect! So, what happened?"
Agatha Macbeth: First domains, now whips....
Alfred Kelberry: they may like it
Wol Euler: whips, maybe; blame, less so
Alfred Kelberry: :)
Agatha Macbeth: You need to watch these domains
Alfred Kelberry: woly, how do you find customers? mostly tenders?
Agatha Macbeth: Love me tender
Wol Euler: mostly by competitoin, but these guys approached us. We built a smaller factory for them in 2002
Alfred Kelberry: nice
Agatha Macbeth: How does being an architect in Germany compare to the UK?
Alfred Kelberry: do you find that some projects repeat themselves and actually feel dull to implement? or each one presents unique challengers?
--BELL--1345
Alfred Kelberry: [woly's on the panel today] :)
Zon Kwan: must go, waves
Agatha Macbeth: Bye Zon
Alfred Kelberry: be good, zon
Zon Kwan: always
Wol Euler: aggers, very much the same, the legal framework is all EU directives in both cases
Xirana Oximoxi: bye Zon! I also go...good night alll! :-)
Wol Euler: boxy, always different, always new
Agatha Macbeth: Ah, right
Wol Euler: bye zon, take care
Wol Euler: bye xir, take care
Agatha Macbeth: Have fun Xira, paint well
Xirana Oximoxi: you too:)
Xirana Oximoxi: ty!
Alfred Kelberry: woly, that's good. you never get bored. except of excel maybe :)
Wol Euler: even that :)
Alfred Kelberry: *looks around* i guess architecture isn't a very popular topic
And so we get into boredom...
Wol Euler: I mean, yes of course if you want to find something boring then you can do so
Wol Euler: that is true of any job, any entertainment, even of any pleasure
Agatha Macbeth: Like counting used bottle tops
Wol Euler: I prefer not to find things boring
Agatha Macbeth: Think happy thoughts
Wol Euler: don't think, just do
Wol Euler smiles.
Agatha Macbeth: Do happy thoughts then
Wol Euler: right
Alfred Kelberry: woly, how do you combat boredom if you do a repetitive manual factory labor?
Wol Euler: boredom is a self-inflicted injury
Alfred Kelberry: that must be tough
Wol Euler: boxy, when I was a student I worked night-shift on a printing press for two summers
Wol Euler: it was manual labour, a buddy and I were catching up the paper as it came out of the press, and stacking them on pallettes
Agatha Macbeth: Fleet Street never recovered...
Wol Euler: no thinking at all
Wol Euler: this was in canada :)
Agatha Macbeth: Oh
Alfred Kelberry: wait! you got to read news first! :)
Wol Euler: advertising flyers and posters
Wol Euler: it was totally mindless, totally repetitive
Wol Euler: and to be honest I enjoyed it
Wol Euler: because after about 20 minutes your body did the job by itself
Wol Euler: I was free :)
Agatha Macbeth: Not expensive
Alfred Kelberry: a student - this your a pill from boredom :)
Wol Euler: I spent my nights re-reading books, considering my opinions on the state of the world
Wol Euler: remembering things I'd done, places I'd been
Wol Euler: it was a great job
Alfred Kelberry: nice :)
Wol Euler: could I have found that boring? of course
Wol Euler: but that is a choice that I didn't make
Wol Euler: boredom is a choice
Alfred Kelberry: i agree that it's a state of mind, but compare two summers vs decades of such work
Agatha Macbeth: This week's topic is boredom...
Wol Euler: it would be a great topic, aggers!
Alfred Kelberry: aga, really?
Agatha Macbeth: It is now
Alfred Kelberry: :)
Wol Euler: let's suggest it
Alfred Kelberry: aga blessed the new topic!
Agatha Macbeth: But now there's nothing left to talk about :(
Alfred Kelberry: yep...
Alfred Kelberry: it's boring
Agatha Macbeth: Wollie just blew it out the water
Wol Euler: ah well
Alfred Kelberry: *yawns*
Agatha Macbeth: I don't think an active mind can ever be bored
Alfred Kelberry: i think it very well can
Agatha Macbeth: Or an active body
Wol Euler: agreed
Alfred Kelberry: but it's active enough to not stuck in boredom
Alfred Kelberry: i can't recall last time i felt bored actually
Wol Euler: (agree with aggers)
Agatha Macbeth smiles
Alfred Kelberry: maybe in school on some lectures
Wol Euler: so you are saying that some people might be bored in some circumstances?
Alfred Kelberry: me?
Alfred Kelberry: yes
Wol Euler: you
Wol Euler: agreed
Agatha Macbeth: Toi monsieur le chien
Wol Euler: I never said that boredom doesn't happen, I said it is a choice
Agatha Macbeth: There ya go Alf, QED
Alfred Kelberry: well, it is... in psychology sense
Agatha Macbeth senses Jung approaching
Agatha Macbeth: with his archetypes
--BELL--1400

Wol Euler: no need to finish, it's a broad topic :) we can come back to it
Korel Laloix: We got bored with it.
Agatha Macbeth: Good idea
Santoshima Resident: boredom! what an exciting topic
Alfred Kelberry: *yawns*
