Korel Laloix: I have read some of his stuff, and some of it is a bit narrow.
Pila Mulligan: how so?
Korel Laloix: But overall, he pushed in some places that needed to be pushed.
Korel Laloix: Let me find the right words.
Pila Mulligan: I'm curious how the next generation sees it
Korel Laloix: From what I saw, he either had the opinion that only white people are racist, but that could just be the small selection that I read.
Korel Laloix: The pre-white history of the Americas was not peaceful.
Pila Mulligan: he never communicated that idea as far as I saw
Mickorod Renard: are you into native American issues for any particular reason Pila ?
Pila Mulligan: to me those are the defining issues of the karma of the US
Korel Laloix: And he did not seem to recognize that.
Pila Mulligan: maybe you can find an example for me
Korel Laloix: Of course, the US was founded on racist beliefs and actions.
Korel Laloix: And the US has its myths about equality.... Lincoln went out of his way to kill First Americans off, but white US society still idolizes him for his slavery actions.
Pila Mulligan: the Peacemaker legend helps illustrate how pre-Western American history was not all peace and love
Pila Mulligan: yes, slavery was an easier issue than indigenous rights then, still is
Korel Laloix: Exactly.
Pila Mulligan: and slavery is a horribly difficult issue
Korel Laloix: Racism and sexism are alive and well here still.
Pila Mulligan: yes
Korel Laloix: But I do think that the USA makes an honest attempt at working on the problem.

Mickorod Renard: coming from a generation where racism and sexism was normal, I found it hard to make the transition, even objected internally to the new laws and regs..but now, after many years i reflect back and see how disgusting the old way was
Pila Mulligan: velocity is tough, the inertia of how things are is not easy to break away from
Korel Laloix: And the ways we try to fix the problems are sometimes just as messed up.

Korel Laloix: And people are people... prejudice is natural.... what we are asking people to do is not natural.... and you have to understand that when you ask people to not stereotype.

Mickorod Renard: There is part in me that may never change, but in my heart I feel ok..so I hope I am respectful now even if I don’t always sound it
Korel Laloix: Affirmative action has been very kind to me.... but what it really does is penalize poor white men to give relatively well off minorities a push.
Pila Mulligan: at the time it began, it made more sense
Korel Laloix: I am the only really poor minority I have met that has really taken advantage of some of the programs....
Korel Laloix: The rest did not need it.... so.... does good, but at the right cost?... I am not sure.
Pila Mulligan: bussing was the same way ... do you remember racial bussing?
Pila Mulligan: that was one of the hottest measures ever, politically
Korel Laloix: I have read about it.
Pila Mulligan: oh, people got angry
Pila Mulligan: but once you had white kids in black schools, those schools got better
Pila Mulligan: so it was a sledge hammer cure
Pila Mulligan: now they need to send white kids to res schools

Korel Laloix: So an example of it going wrong.
Pila Mulligan: Hawaii is one of the most, if not the most, multi-cultural places anywhere
Pila Mulligan: there is no statically dominant ethnicity here
Pila Mulligan: it is a real melting pot
Pila Mulligan: but there is still ethnic tension
Pila Mulligan: and a lot of jokes
Pila Mulligan: it is better than stereotypical social stratification

Korel Laloix: It is just odd how we treat people different based on such things.

Mickorod Renard: to a degree here too, but one has to be selective about which ethnic group you joke about

Korel Laloix: I don't know, I saw some very bad racism when I was in Europe...
Mickorod Renard: some accept it in good spirit, others offended
Korel Laloix: In Germany, the attitude toward the Turkish.
Korel Laloix: And in the UK about eh Pakistanis.

Pila Mulligan: I work with a group of black World War II veterans, they say when they were in Europe in the 1940's during and after the war they had much less trouble with prejudice, some even stayed there after the war for that reason
Pila Mulligan: but the US in the 1940's was seriously racist
Korel Laloix: I don't have a good idea of that. But I have read.
Mickorod Renard: I think a lot of racial tension in the UK at the moment is more to do with protectionism in respect of benefits and jobs. but in the past to do with differences in culture...for this reason I think there is not so much of the traditional form of racism here

Mickorod Renard: Its interesting Pila,,only the other night on tv there was a program depicting the racism in the UK after the ww2 and servicemen

Pila Mulligan: it made them less tolerant when they came home and that led to the civil rights movement gaining strength

Mickorod Renard: I am ok with Islamic culture, I worked many years in a multicultural environment, I took time to learn the different cultures

Mickorod Renard: yes, we had guinnies,,which were gold and worth one pound one shilling,,of course the price of gold now would make one worth hundreds

Mickorod Renard: if China and so forth can afford,,due to increased value of currency to the west,,they will buy up the resources around the world
