Bruce Mowbray: Well, he told me that my hearing loss is probably permanent.
Bruce Mowbray: But that he thinks we can fix the balance problem.
Aphrodite Macbain: How do you get around? With a walking stick?
Eliza Madrigal: oh, bummer, but the balance is probably the larger issue?
Bruce Mowbray: It's not that bad -- although I had to use a walker for the first week or o out of the hospital
Bruce Mowbray: Dash also had Legionnaire's disease -- and also contracted it in New York, like I did...
Bruce Mowbray: and also then went to a hospital in Ohio -- as I did.

Bruce Mowbray: I have 300 acres of open fields on one side of my rl house and a big forest on the other. . . so you would both be happy here -- if you could stand southern Ohio!
Aphrodite Macbain: sometimes too much of just one is not good
Dash Earthboy: my lot is 3/4 forest
Dash Earthboy: but i like the open yard part too
Eliza Madrigal thinks she could immerse in forest for a looong while rather contentedly
Korel Laloix: For me, I feel crowded in forest - like in a busy mall.

Bruce Mowbray: If I can't see a horizon, I get claustrophobic.
Dash Earthboy: are the trees making you move out of their way?
Korel Laloix: I guess I just feel the same way toward trees as people in terms of my personal space.
Eliza Madrigal: hmm
Bruce Mowbray: absolutely so, Korel.
Bruce Mowbray: Except that I usually prefer the trees.
Bruce Mowbray: I've never felt claustrophobic in a forest, though.
Eliza Madrigal: trees seem to give space to me, some people do

Eliza Madrigal: its strange, I was diagnosed with claustrophobia as a teen, moved high schools even, but it was more about no windows
Korel Laloix: I am not really claustrophobic, but I don’t like even a hint of being restrained.
Eliza Madrigal: forest spots seem endless and open to me
Eliza Madrigal: nurturing some inner spaciousness
Bruce Mowbray: My mom used to tie me up as a kid because I was so hyper -- and I still have a powerful phobia about that.

Bruce Mowbray: Well, it sure terrified ME. . .
Eliza Madrigal: of course
Aphrodite Macbain: what terrified you Bruce- being tied up?

Dash Earthboy: my mom was less into that kind of bondage & more into controlling using a belt to give welts
 

Aphrodite Macbain: I know when I go hiking and have been going along for a while under the trees, I feel such elation when I walk out into a big open patch with a wide view. My heart lifts.
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, Aph, It's like a cathedral, huh?
Eliza Madrigal: mmm yes I guess I feel that near the ocean too @ Aph, like 'relief'

Aphrodite Macbain: I guess it's a basic instinct - to fear being or feeling trapped
Bruce Mowbray: I think I'd rather be in a forest clearing than in a cathedral -- and rather be in a cathedral than be tied up - if the truth were known.
Aphrodite Macbain: anything would be better than that

Bruce Mowbray: Yeah, I got chased around the house -- by a crazy mother with a belt -- until she trapped me. I guess she figured it was easier for her if she tied me up.
