Questions about intelligence.

Storm Nordwind: Another project I was doing was a fun challenge - designing and building some critters to populate the waters of a coastal sim

Storm Nordwind: When you have to design AI (Artifical Intelligence) it makes you question what intelligence is!

Storm Nordwind: Ah... I said I questioned it. I didn't suggest I had any answers! ;))

Is intelligence just a set of rules?

Storm Nordwind: When programming these little beasts - and it's the programming that took all the time, not the prim building - it made me wonder whether sometimes what people call intelligence may just a set of adaptable rules that respond to the changing environment, and whose goal is simply survival and self-perpetuation.
Storm Nordwind: Anyway - like I said - I have no answers!

What's the difference between human intelligence, animal intelligence and artificial intelligence?

Storm Nordwind: And another question would be: what is the difference, if any, between the intelligence of humans and the intelligence of other animals... and that of programmed animals? :)

Storm Nordwind: The quick answer would be, one is programmed from outside and one is not... But is that true? How much are we the product of what we are taught?

Xirana Oximoxi: I think we are 'programmed' from outside too... but in the sense of haven't received all the knowledge of our ancestors

Being vs. Intelligence?

Storm Nordwind: Hmm.. It leads me to ask whether what we call intelligence is sometimes really just "baggage" - stuff we can drop, when we "drop what we have to see what we are" - in PaB
Storm Nordwind: In other words, is Intelligence the same as Being? Or are they separate things?
Xirana Oximoxi: maybe we neeed some level of 'intelligence' to be aware of being

Artificial intelligence and emotions.

Xirana Oximoxi: do you think artificiel intelligence will be abke to get also emotional attitudes?
Xirana Oximoxi: able
Xirana Oximoxi: I'm thinking at the film 'Blade runner?
Xirana Oximoxi: have you seen it?
Storm Nordwind: How can you tell whether anyone or anything has emotion?
Xirana Oximoxi: usually we separate reason from emotions
Xirana Oximoxi: more realted to senses
Xirana Oximoxi: not to brain
Xirana Oximoxi: probably it's not possible to separate these two 'sides' of human beings...
Storm Nordwind: And perhaps they are not the only sides either. There is what people call "intuition" and "inspiration" - which don't seem to be "reason" but neither what most people would describe as emotion, even if they are also "irrational".
Alfred Kelberry: ai comparable to a human is a long way to go. you can't tackle emotions or abstract reasoning if current computers can't even recognise captchas.

Learning a new language.

I could spin a story and project human emotions on to the animals I have created in SL, saying that they have a horror of falling of the earth, or that they get claustrophobic :) ... but all they are doing is choosing between five different behavioral algorithms according to where they find themselves.

Storm Nordwind: 1000 years old yes. But I'm living in a country now where "old" is just two lifetimes ago!

Storm Nordwind: More recent than that Boxy. The Civil War here is "old"... 1860s... but that's just two lifetimes end-to-end ago. And you can see photos from it!
