Wol Euler was guardian for this session.
Wol Euler: sayonara, sam-san
oO0Oo Resident: Wol :)
Wol Euler: nice kimono
oO0Oo Resident: ty.. a gift from the people who performed the Kabuki at the 3rd anniversary celebrations of PaB
Wol Euler: ah, right, I remember that
--BELL--
Wol Euler: For the record, and by way of introducing a possible topic: Sam and I have been IMing about hair (prim versus slider)
eggsalad Ormstein: hi gang
Wol Euler: hello egg!
eggsalad Ormstein: hi wol =hug=
Wol Euler: how are you today?
eggsalad Ormstein: much better than yesterday, thanks
Wol Euler: good, I'm glad to hear that
oO0Oo Resident: :) yes.. glad too
eggsalad Ormstein: ty sammy
Wol Euler: I had started to say, as soon as Sam arrived I ambushed hem with "helpful advice" about hair
eggsalad Ormstein: do go on, sorry to interrupt
Wol Euler: I meant it as a friendly gesture, a sign of affection, but realized as I was doing it that it could be taken as criticism, meddling
oO0Oo Resident: thanks sista!
Wol Euler: and wondered why I have this desire to "improve" what's around me
Wol Euler: clearly that is related to my having become an architect, as a profession we try to improve the world :)
Wol Euler: perhaps this is an attachment that I might usefully drop
oO0Oo Resident: I appreciate the advice Wol, and respect your taste
Wol Euler: I'm very bad at letting people make their own mistakes
Wol Euler: and I am very quick to jump to the presumption that what I see *is* a mistake, rather than an intention that I misunderstood
oO0Oo Resident: i suspect you are at times a bit hard on yourself most of all ::looks at Wol softly::
Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: thank you.
eggsalad Ormstein: psst, wol. I *meant* to wear a dress. Yes, I know I'm male :)
Wol Euler laughs.
Wol Euler: yes, we figured that one out already :)
oO0Oo Resident: I'm giving myself ... extra time... to figure out... what i am..
Wol Euler nods.
eggsalad Ormstein: I am the walrus.
eggsalad Ormstein: koo koo kajoob
Wol Euler: goo goo kachoo
oO0Oo Resident: i've decided to let a fair amount of diversity play upon and in me
Wol Euler listens.
--BELL--
Wol Euler: would you like to expand on that, sam?
oO0Oo Resident: mmm... letting go a bit of cherished self concepts allows for to dress up in more things... internally and externally and intermittantly, and interbeingly ;)
Wol Euler has found the title for this session :)
oO0Oo Resident: like putting myself in someone else's shoes, but without anyone else being liable in any way
Wol Euler nods.
oO0Oo Resident: and then the possibilities are seemingly endless
Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: such potential in all of us
oO0Oo Resident imagines a random landscape and wonders about what it must be like to be an architect seeing many possibilities
Wol Euler: it's a kind of sickness, actually :)
Wol Euler: one is perpetually dissatisfied
Wol Euler: architects don't take the world seriously, they don't really look at it as it is -- because that is just the "before" half of a future magazine spread :)
Wol Euler: I struggle against that, with some success
Wol Euler: I am famous among my friends for taking a camera with us on walks, to photograph flowers and clouds, but leaving it at home when we go to Venice :)
oO0Oo Resident: :) girlfriends can give spontaneous hair advice to save the day... Buildings are harder to 'comb out' once erected ;) understand there would be pressure to continually re-evaluate
Wol Euler: that's true. The great problem of architecture is that every building is a prototype.
Wol Euler: we are contractually obligated to re-invent wheels
oO0Oo Resident: I must say.. I totally loved reading Christopher Alexander's book: The Timeless Way of Building
Wol Euler: unless you are in hte happy position of becoming a specialist in a type of building, like Von Gerkan und Marg who do only airports, you are always battling against ignorance
--BELL--
oO0Oo Resident: hehehehe.. the battle is against 'knowing' you are right
Wol Euler: yes, a wonderful book (and a free website too)
oO0Oo Resident: [01:46] Play as Being 15 minute bell: Thank you.
Wol Euler smiles.
oO0Oo Resident: i enjoy the politeness built in
Wol Euler: yes, it is very nice
oO0Oo Resident: mmm... correction... not 'against', but maybe 'with'
Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: yes, to keep the ability to look again, to reconsider
Wol Euler: something architects as a profession are not good at. We rather think that we KNOW
Wol Euler: in my five years of education, no teacher ever suggested starting a project by talking to the clients or users to find out what they wanted :)
Wol Euler: we think of our buildings as Beethoven probably thought of his symphonies: it's in my head, let me pour it onto the page.
Wol Euler: for you to enjoy and wonder at.
oO0Oo Resident: mmm.. yes .. just as 99% of people in psychological professions, never had any course on what the 'mind' actually is
Wol Euler smiles.
eggsalad Ormstein: sorry afk
Wol Euler: wb
Wol Euler: and bye
Wol Euler: let's go back if we may to your diversity, sam
oO0Oo Resident: being clear, and 'knowing' is a real ongoing, forward moving journey. That willingness to remain open is something to be reckoned with
oO0Oo Resident: when one is used to being 'right', when a 'mistake' occurs, it is a hard earned lesson that feeds the next round of 'rightness'
oO0Oo Resident: kind of turmoil
Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: we learn early on, in schools usually, that a mistake means that *we* are bad/wrong/invalid
Wol Euler: making a mistake reduces my worth as a human being. No wonder we fear them!
Wol Euler: there was a great TED talk that I found recently by someone who calls herself a "wrongologist" :)
Wol Euler: talking about the usefulness of mistakes
oO0Oo Resident: lol.. cool
Wol Euler: Kathryn Schulz, http://www.ted.com/talks/kathryn_sch...ing_wrong.html
--BELL--
Wol Euler: "Most of us will do anything to avoid being wrong. But what if we're wrong about that? 'Wrongologist' Kathryn Schulz makes a compelling case for not just admitting but embracing our fallibility."
oO0Oo Resident: :)
Wol Euler: I love TED, I listen to it at work like a really high-brow radio station
Wol Euler: and it's all free! Amazing!
oO0Oo Resident: yes it is really valuable, and packs so much pertinent, smart info into an inspiring 18-22 minutes
Wol Euler: http://www.ted.com/talks/ric_elias.html
oO0Oo Resident: clicking
Wol Euler: that's a really short one, only 5:03, but very intense. Very moving.
oO0Oo Resident is riveted...
Wol Euler nods and shivers, remembering
oO0Oo Resident: ...ah! yes...
Wol Euler smiles.
oO0Oo Resident: great vid Wol... :)
Wol Euler: yeah :)
Wol Euler: glad you liked it. I thought you would.
oO0Oo Resident: i am reminded, now that there were some passages in a book, that reminded me of you in a connected way RE: shifting attitude to life... will try and email if I can remember to
Wol Euler: ah, ty :)
Wol Euler: I'll look forward to htat
oO0Oo Resident sees the first rays of sun warming the skin tones of Wol's avvie
Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: one of the greatest things of SL is that any time of day can be dawn, whenever you want
--BELL--
oO0Oo Resident: It dawns to mind, that I ought to transistion. I thank you for being the much needed eye to my SL style, when I try new things :) I am also very heartened that Egg was feeling somewhat better today. Though quiet, it was really nice to have him here.
Wol Euler: agreed :) and ty
Wol Euler: re eye: any time
Wol Euler: goodnight sam, take care
oO0Oo Resident: it takes a village... and .. sisters don't let sisters drive that prim hair without a baldie on first ;)
Wol Euler: heheheheheheh
oO0Oo Resident: tc Wol
