2011.06.21 19:00 - falling in love in SL

The Guardian for this mid-summer's eve meeting was Eos Amaterasu. The comments are by Eos Amaterasu. Present also were Aphrodite, Lila, stevenaia, Storm, Gretsch, and Dash.

    Eos Amaterasu: Hi Aphro!
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Eos
Aphrodite Macbain: Is it raining out east?
Eos Amaterasu: At this rare moment it's not
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
Eos Amaterasu: we've had months of almost continuous rainy weather
Aphrodite Macbain: I recently spoke to a friend in St John's who said the weather has been terible
Eos Amaterasu: getting more breaks now, but still pretty wet
Aphrodite Macbain: Fortunately we have blue skies for this summer solstice evening
Eos Amaterasu: yes, even the old folks ain't saying c'est la vie you never can tell
Aphrodite Macbain: I'm thinking of going for a walk by the seashore
Eos Amaterasu: ah, thanks for the reminder!
Eos Amaterasu: strange, often it's been a big deal
    Aphrodite Macbain: what reminder?

    Luminary Dark Matter appears

Eos Amaterasu: there's self contradictory luminary dark matter
    Aphrodite Macbain: say what?
    Lila Darkmatter: :))
    Eos Amaterasu: of mid-summer's eve
    Aphrodite Macbain: ah.
Lila Darkmatter: Hi Eos and Aph :)
    Aphrodite Macbain smiles
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Lila
Eos Amaterasu: now we can be truly shakespearean
    Lila Darkmatter smiles back
Aphrodite Macbain: shall I pull out my quill or my sword?
Aphrodite Macbain: Lila you dont look like darkmatter at all!
Lila Darkmatter: how many things are you hiding? :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-) many
Eos Amaterasu: lots of people playing as being people in plays
Aphrodite Macbain: I carry my bed with me
    Aphrodite Macbain: brb
Lila Darkmatter: very wise, playing as dreaming
Lila Darkmatter: How are you this evening Eos?
Eos Amaterasu: oh, end of a long day... but the sun's been coming out occasionally now, after many many weeks
Eos Amaterasu hears George Harrison singing....
Lila Darkmatter: wonderful.. do do do do
Eos Amaterasu: How is your mid-summer's eve, Lila?
Eos Amaterasu: (Lila Being = Play as Being)

Eos Amaterasu: hi playing as stevenaia!
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Lila Darkmatter: lovely day in many ways, drifing into lovely evening
    Lila Darkmatter: Hi Stevenia :)
stevenaia Michinaga: waves to Eos, Aphrodite and Lila
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Playing stevenaia
    stevenaia Michinaga: yes, solstice today
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Storm.
    Storm Nordwind: Hi there

    Lila Darkmatter: Hi Storm :)
    Eos Amaterasu: Ah, hi Storm!
Aphrodite Macbain: how are you celebrating solstice?
Lila Darkmatter: perhaps we should have a fire in the middle, and dance :)
stevenaia Michinaga: friends got up at 6:00 to do sun salutations at the river this morning
Storm Nordwind: Today - not at all. I forgot till it was too late!
    Aphrodite Macbain: good idea!
Eos Amaterasu: come on baby light my fire :-)
Lila Darkmatter: wow that sounds so interesting stevenaia
Storm Nordwind: One way I will drive to the top of Mt Evans (14,000ft) and watch the sunrise. But not this year!
Aphrodite Macbain: I would have had to get up at 5 to welcome the sunrise
Eos Amaterasu used to do salutes to the sun
    Storm Nordwind: *One day
Lila Darkmatter: wow, nice plan Storm
Aphrodite Macbain: I did too but usually in a gym
Storm Nordwind: I used to watch the sun rise over the sea with friends.
Aphrodite Macbain: I'll say goodby to it this evening at 10pm
Aphrodite Macbain: maybe at the seashore
    Lila Darkmatter: mmm
Storm Nordwind: Yes - in Scotland I could still read by it at 11pm
Aphrodite Macbain: where sally sells seashells
Aphrodite Macbain: what would you read as the sun went down?
Eos Amaterasu: the mid-summer pre-fruition fruition
    Aphrodite Macbain: that's a book?
Storm Nordwind: Good question! Actually i would read till way after the sun was down as it barely skirted under the horizon
Aphrodite Macbain: how are your eyes now?
Eos Amaterasu: (heh heh, Aphro, just a glimpse)
stevenaia Michinaga: a book pales to staring at the sun, 93 m miles away as it dissappears below the water
Aphrodite Macbain: true. It's strange how quickly it moves below the horizin
Eos Amaterasu: salute to the sun from its third stone....
Storm Nordwind: Anyway, I have three things to celebrate around Summer Solstice. Getting my US driving license, coming into SL for the first time (5 years ago) and the solstice itself.
Lila Darkmatter: 5 years, my goodness!

    --BELL--

    stevenaia Michinaga: happy rez day
    Storm Nordwind: Thank you Steve
    stevenaia Michinaga: rez year
stevenaia Michinaga: I'm just a few days behind you
Storm Nordwind: three avatars previous to this one :)
Lila Darkmatter: was the day so long that you became restless enough to try SL? and yes happy rez day/year/solstice/license
    Aphrodite Macbain: HRD!!
Lila Darkmatter: happy happy to you too then stevenaia :)
Storm Nordwind: I saw a BBC news item telling how they'd hired an island for a concert and wondered whether I could use SL professionally
Storm Nordwind: So I tried it.
Lila Darkmatter: virtual quick sand but at least it is open on the other side
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
    Storm Nordwind: :)
    Storm Nordwind: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: I heard about it on NPR, seems so much better than other online envirnment (They always steal stories from BBC)s
Storm Nordwind: Actually first I researched all the virtual worlds that were available (with the help of http://www.virtualworldsreview.com/) and then chose SL
Aphrodite Macbain: what made you choose it?
Storm Nordwind: Good for artists, user generated content, software people. Not good for kids... ;)
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Eos Amaterasu: autopoeisis, birds, and bees
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Storm Nordwind: very glad I did of course, as that's where I met my future wife less than 8 months later
    stevenaia Michinaga: smiles
    stevenaia Michinaga: smiles
    Lila Darkmatter smiles
    Lila Darkmatter smiles
Aphrodite Macbain: you met her in SL?
Storm Nordwind: Yes. In a clothes shop.
Eos Amaterasu: two worlds meet in the heart
    Lila Darkmatter: aw
    Storm Nordwind smiles
Aphrodite Macbain: do you rememebr what you were buying?
Eos Amaterasu: hard to avoid clothes shops in sl :-)
Storm Nordwind: Yes. I still have the landmark for the shop!
Lila Darkmatter: yes, but am thinking... have had very few conversations in SL shops
Aphrodite Macbain: did she offer to help you?
    Aphrodite Macbain: choose?
    Storm Nordwind: Hmmm...
Aphrodite Macbain: what was your pickup line?
    Lila Darkmatter: :))
    Lila Darkmatter: taking notes Aph?
Storm Nordwind: We just started talking. I guess we were meant to talk. As you say, it's kind of unusual to converse in a clothes shop!
Storm Nordwind: It was she that approached me...
Storm Nordwind: I have it written down somewhere... ;)
    Storm Nordwind goes looking
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
    Eos Amaterasu: searching the logs?
Storm Nordwind: No I wrote the whole thing up for a sociology project!
Eos Amaterasu: life as a laboratory
    Aphrodite Macbain: For a university?
Eos Amaterasu: we think we're in a play
    Aphrodite Macbain: how so Eos?
Eos Amaterasu is a character in a mid-summer's play
Storm Nordwind: Yes for a university
Lila Darkmatter: life in a lab... standing back a bit, enacting but seeing enacting...
    Eos Amaterasu bows to enacting
Eos Amaterasu: and to seeing enacting
Aphrodite Macbain: strutting and fretting upon the stage and then are seen no more...
Eos Amaterasu: the play's the thing, wherewith to place on the finger the ring
Lila Darkmatter: mmm, nods and considers
    Aphrodite Macbain raises one eyebrow
Storm Nordwind can't find the eaxct quote, but has found that he asked her whether she thought it was possible to fall in love in Second Life :)
Eos Amaterasu: a leading line if I ever heard one :-)
Aphrodite Macbain: And what did she answer?
    Lila Darkmatter: :))

    --BELL--

Storm Nordwind: The essay does not disclose ;)
    Lila Darkmatter grins
Eos Amaterasu: (the rest is history)
Storm Nordwind: I flew to Colorado two months later
Aphrodite Macbain: did you really fall in love with her at first sight?
Lila Darkmatter: seems a lovely way to court a girl... build things, walk into dreams together
    Eos Amaterasu: :-) :-)
Storm Nordwind: What a lovely description Lila!
    Aphrodite Macbain: create utopias
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Storm Nordwind: Bear in mind that it's usually hard to tell people's age and sex on SL...
Eos Amaterasu: and the dreams sweep up real life as they whirl along
Aphrodite Macbain: that can crash to the floor on the first windy day
Aphrodite Macbain: I fell in love in SL
Storm Nordwind: yet I knew within a few minutes she was slightly older than me and really female (and also American) - though I've probably lost the ability to do that sort of thing now
Eos Amaterasu: who was asking that question ("is it possible...")
Aphrodite Macbain: what sort of thing?
    Aphrodite Macbain: Storm
Eos Amaterasu: SL Storm, RL Storm
Storm Nordwind: Tell people's real age and real sex without asking
    Lila Darkmatter: :))
Aphrodite Macbain: in SL or RL?
    Storm Nordwind: SL!
Aphrodite Macbain: sometimes it's hard in RL
Lila Darkmatter: well you turned down your radar perhaps Storm
Storm Nordwind: Though I admit it's sometimes hard in Malaysia
    Aphrodite Macbain: !?
Eos Amaterasu should ask a dream figure that question: how old are you? :-)
Aphrodite Macbain: hehe Eos. We don't ask those questions in dreams, do we?
    Lila Darkmatter: very interesting idea
    Eos Amaterasu: why not?

    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Gretsch
    Gretsch Resident: hello
    Lila Darkmatter: Hi Gretsch
    Eos Amaterasu: Hi Gretsch
Aphrodite Macbain: I don't remember being that analytical in dreams
Eos Amaterasu: Welcome to Play as Being
Aphrodite Macbain: though I did once ask the way home
Eos Amaterasu: If you haven't been here before, I can give you a notecard about what we do
Lila Darkmatter: Did you Aph? That's very sweet
Gretsch Resident: I came once before
Lila Darkmatter: Were you given directions? @ Aph
Gretsch Resident: No, I found it by myself
Aphrodite Macbain: Yes, many of my dreams are about being lost and trying to find my way home. That time I was in a New York subway
    Eos Amaterasu: Welcome back, Gretsch!
    Lila Darkmatter: Welcome Gretsch :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: hi Gretsch
Eos Amaterasu: "if I knew the way, I would take you home"
Aphrodite Macbain: A Big man in a uniform with a hat came to help me but he didn't tell me how to get home
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello Observerum
Aphrodite Macbain: A Big man in a uniform with a hat came to help me but he didn't tell me how to get home
Lila Darkmatter: hmm, so it is a puzzle then...
Lila Darkmatter: a pattern of many dreams
    observerm Resident waves
    stevenaia Michinaga: smiles
    Lila Darkmatter waves to Observrm
Aphrodite Macbain: so I sa t down next to some night workers, took of my dark glasses and said "hola"
    Eos Amaterasu: a weave
stevenaia Michinaga: I don't remember ever falling in love in a dream
Lila Darkmatter: :) I have kissed Steve Martin and Fred Astaire in dreams... hehe
Aphrodite Macbain: me neither - just in SL
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: were they good kissers?
Gretsch Resident: I cannot imagine falling in love in SL
Lila Darkmatter: maybe should take that out of the log, hahah
    Eos Amaterasu: the dreamy screen
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: which one?
Lila Darkmatter: I couldn't tell you, just little pecks really...
    Aphrodite Macbain: dreamy scream?
    Lila Darkmatter laughs
Eos Amaterasu: characters from the shakespeare of your mind
Storm Nordwind can categorically state he has never kissed Steve Martin and Fred Astaire in dreams... so far
Aphrodite Macbain: Please take a cushion Gretch
    Gretsch Resident: Where?
Storm Nordwind: Anywhere you like :)
Aphrodite Macbain: in front of you
Eos Amaterasu: right-click on any cushion
Gretsch Resident: Can the cushions be picked up?
    Aphrodite Macbain: no
    Aphrodite Macbain: just sat on
Gretsch Resident: Then how can I take one?
Eos Amaterasu: & select sit here
    Eos Amaterasu: ha ha
Aphrodite Macbain: right click on a cushion and then click "sit"
Eos Amaterasu: my mind is clicking
    Aphrodite Macbain: brb
Lila Darkmatter still musing about falling in love in SL and the way people tune into one another... all very neat

    --BELL--

Gretsch Resident: How can you fall in love in SL?
Aphrodite Macbain: by getting to know the person
Gretsch Resident: I don't see how you can really do that in SL
stevenaia Michinaga: for some reason it is easier to spends hours with someone here that you wouldn;t normally go visit on a regular basis in RL, aside from them being on another continent
Storm Nordwind: Some people do. It can depend on how well you get to know someone
    Dash Earthboy: hey y'all
    Storm Nordwind: Hello Dash
Gretsch Resident: SL seems to distant to get to really know anyone
    stevenaia Michinaga: hi Dash
Lila Darkmatter: yes, and maybe by bypassing some things that may obscure a person in RL ... really hearing
    Lila Darkmatter: Hi Dash
Eos Amaterasu: (hi Dash (from somewhere in the 90 secs))
Lila Darkmatter: I'd think it takes optimism, but I've heard a few say that they never planned/wanted
Aphrodite Macbain: I have gotten to know a number of people really well on SL
Storm Nordwind: Perhaps with practice you'll find the boundaries get thinner between SL and RL
Eos Amaterasu: just spending time with people is a biggie
Gretsch Resident: Me? No, I would much rather keep the boundary clear.
Aphrodite Macbain: they are still real people talking
    Lila Darkmatter: 'quality time'
Aphrodite Macbain: with ideas, opinions, ways of saying
Eos Amaterasu: plus the possibly best expression of you can meet the possibly best expression of someone else
    Lila Darkmatter: ah, nice Eos!
Gretsch Resident: That's true in RL
    Eos Amaterasu: I hope so!
Aphrodite Macbain: yes Eos- provided we can keep to our possible best on line
Storm Nordwind: Then Gretsch that boundary will certainly keep you distant and perhaps you won't get to know people well. Though perhaps that's what you want?
Gretsch Resident: I did say that is what I want.
Aphrodite Macbain: A lot of conversation takes place on IMs as well
Eos Amaterasu: what takes place in IM stays in IM
    Gretsch Resident: how original
Aphrodite Macbain: i have heard rumour that there are ways of "listening in" to IM's Is that possible?
Aphrodite Macbain: special kind of sifteware to keep rally private
Storm Nordwind: No idea Aphrodite. Never thought to find out.
stevenaia Michinaga: I do know there are ways to "secure" an IM conversatin as well
Eos Amaterasu: the lindens know all
    Aphrodite Macbain: software. really
stevenaia Michinaga: I assume Linden Labs can keep and use anything said here in their TOS
Eos Amaterasu: we are but thoughts in their cpu's
Aphrodite Macbain: steve? how do you do that?
Gretsch Resident: I assume that everything people write in SL is stored somewhere
    Eos Amaterasu: at least transitorily
Storm Nordwind: I doubt that. My guess would that it would be too much data long term. Probably overwritten many time
Dash Earthboy: the more you know, the scarier it gets :(
Gretsch Resident: I don't think of anything here as private in any way.
Lila Darkmatter: that seems a wise approach
    Storm Nordwind nods
Eos Amaterasu: how to live totally publicly is a challenge
Lila Darkmatter: though between friends there are confidences which lindens aren't interested in I'm sure
Eos Amaterasu: we hide things from ourselves
    Lila Darkmatter: indeed Eos
Gretsch Resident: Why would you want to live totally publicly?
Storm Nordwind: Lack of privacy is one reason why some people have several avatars
Eos Amaterasu: I was responding to [19:51] Gretsch: I don't think of anything here as private in any way.
Eos Amaterasu: we are thrown into this situation
Gretsch Resident: I don't get what you mean, sorry.
Eos Amaterasu: we are more and more living in a world where our speech and actions become part of a public record
Eos Amaterasu: or someone's private record
Gretsch Resident: I don't think I'm thrown into this. I decided to do SL.
    Gretsch Resident: Oh, I see.
Eos Amaterasu: like Facebook's or Linden Labs'
Gretsch Resident: Yes, that seems to be a sad reality. Of course, we can choose not to participate in those things.
Lila Darkmatter: It adds a level of awareness to see that and still choose to take part
Storm Nordwind does not participate in facebook
Eos Amaterasu: yes, that's the interesting play
Lila Darkmatter: and also a bit of humility, to realize one's story is just one of incalculable stories
Gretsch Resident: Yes, I think it helps to realize that one's personal story is not really important.
Lila Darkmatter: that can be told millions of ways at any time
Dash Earthboy: i think part of SL's raison d'etre is to get others to play along with just the part we want to reveal to the public
Lila Darkmatter: well it is important , that isn't exactly what I meant
Eos Amaterasu: which, relative to the sun that we are saluting today, is a very thin membrane on a long history
    Lila Darkmatter: its both :)
Gretsch Resident: Well, it's important to me and my loved ones, but not to anyone else. That's what I mean.
Eos Amaterasu: here we can find loved ones :-)
    Lila Darkmatter: ah :)
Lila Darkmatter: yes I'm deeply moved by hearing stories and getting to know people through them
Gretsch Resident: I can't find loved ones in SL, that's for sure
Storm Nordwind smiles and nods to Eos
    Aphrodite Macbain: be patient
Lila Darkmatter: and in SL it is RL stories and also dreams
    Aphrodite Macbain: stick with us
    Lila Darkmatter: hehe Aph
Eos Amaterasu: hmm, yes, our stories follow us
Gretsch Resident: No, I would not allow myself to do that. I need to be in contact with the people I love and care about.
Storm Nordwind: I think Gretsch suggested she didn't want to find loved ones in SL - by deliberately keeping a separation
Lila Darkmatter: many in this community have met in RL Gretsch
Gretsch Resident: Well, that's good for them. I wouldn't want to meet anyone in SL in RL.
    Lila Darkmatter nods
Eos Amaterasu: it's kind of like performing in a play, romeo and juliet, and their actors fall in love
Aphrodite Macbain: Think about those who loved form afar - wrote letters to maintain the relationship
Dash Earthboy: have you ever met any of your heroes from your youth?
Storm Nordwind: Because it would damage the distance Gretsch?
Gretsch Resident: Heroes from my youth?
    Dash Earthboy: yes
Lila Darkmatter: :) yes Aph... that's what I think SL can be like... animated letter writing
    Gretsch Resident: Why?

    --BELL--

Dash Earthboy: well, having met actors & writers & singers I admired
Aphrodite Macbain: It's not direct. It's based on text
Dash Earthboy: i have felt very good about meeting people i get to know under more distant circumstances
Gretsch Resident: Well, I met William Shatner once. Pretty dissapointing.
    Dash Earthboy: i see
Gretsch Resident: Not that he was a hero. I have never had a hero.
    Aphrodite Macbain: But he's regular
    Gretsch Resident: Everyone is regular
    Dash Earthboy: yes
    Aphrodite Macbain: he eats wheaties
    Dash Earthboy: regular @#$!
Gretsch Resident: I have no idea what he eats.
Eos Amaterasu: writing in the vocabulary of animated avatars...
Lila Darkmatter: neat, most of my heroes were book figures
Eos Amaterasu once met Glenn Gould
    Aphrodite Macbain: in second life!!?
    Eos Amaterasu: in first life
Gretsch Resident: I've met quite a few people who are famous, including some nobel laureates. It can be interesting, or weird.
Storm Nordwind had a few guitar heroes he would watch at rock concerts - that was about it :D
Eos Amaterasu: after hours and hours and hours of listening to his Goldberg Variations - so I first got to know him in that life
    Lila Darkmatter: :)))
Dash Earthboy: in 2009 I was walking a dog on the same circuit that Emmylou Harris walks her dog
Eos Amaterasu: as someone said, in Second Life you meet people from the inside out
Aphrodite Macbain: Yes- I get lost in them and never tire of them
Gretsch Resident: Who is Emmylou Harris?
    Dash Earthboy: nice conversations ensued
    Storm Nordwind: Nice Eos
    Aphrodite Macbain: A C&W singer
    Gretsch Resident: Oh
Dash Earthboy: and i've had some meals with Robert Redford
Lila Darkmatter nods @ Eos :)
    Eos Amaterasu: ! (@ Dash)
Dash Earthboy: and some jam sessions with some other performers
    Aphrodite Macbain: were they goodf?
Gretsch Resident: This is an odd conversation. Are we showing off the famous people we've run into?
    Dash Earthboy: yes
Lila Darkmatter: what did he eat? hehe
    Dash Earthboy: no Gretsch
    Gretsch Resident: Seems like that.
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
Eos Amaterasu: it's even more interesting to meet ordinary people who reveal their true magic
Dash Earthboy: the point is, it can be nice meeting people in RL
    Lila Darkmatter: :::swoon:::::
    Dash Earthboy: sheesh
Gretsch Resident: Well, I would agree. I'd much rather meet people in RL. In SL, I don't think I ever really meet anyone.
    Eos Amaterasu: np
Dash Earthboy: i responded to your bad experience with Shatner with some positive examples from my experience
Storm Nordwind: How long have you tried?
Lila Darkmatter: things are only open when we are perhaps
    Gretsch Resident: Tried what?
Storm Nordwind: to really meet anyone
Gretsch Resident: Um, I'm not some solitary nerd siting in her room at a computer screen. I have a life, including a spouse, children, etc. I think I've met a few people.
Eos Amaterasu: after all, you were just born a few days from yesterday !
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Gretsch Resident: I wasn't born yesterday. I'm in my 50's
    Dash Earthboy: :)
Eos Amaterasu: I mean in SL
    Dash Earthboy: :)
Lila Darkmatter: so are most of the community here I think.... but still very playful
Lila Darkmatter: in fact prob more so than when in 20s
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Gretsch Resident: And, how do you know I'm new to SL?
Eos Amaterasu: it says so on your profile
Gretsch Resident: Do you believe that the profile reflects the truth?
Eos Amaterasu: no, it just reflects your avatar
Dash Earthboy: so much for anonymity
Gretsch Resident: Exactly. So you actually have no idea whether or not I'm new to SL.
Storm Nordwind: Which is why I asked how long you'd tried "In SL, I don't think I ever really meet anyone."
Eos Amaterasu: whether your RL is new to SL
Dash Earthboy: personally i've more enjoyed chats where avis weren't the focus of our online personas
    Dash Earthboy: especially video chats
Eos Amaterasu: even in RL we can be Shakespearean, playing with the drama of ourselves
Eos Amaterasu: and we can do that here as well
Eos Amaterasu: and maybe even learn from doing it here in SL
Dash Earthboy: sorry group but since Gretsch didn't know Emmylou, I tried for an example I thought she'd recognize
Dash Earthboy: i'm not really into name-dropping :(
Storm Nordwind had never heard of Emmylou either
Lila Darkmatter: No, don't worry Dash it wasn't you
    Storm Nordwind: Indeed
Eos Amaterasu: too damn many celebrities
Aphrodite Macbain: everyone has their own heros
Dash Earthboy: why say that Eos?
Eos Amaterasu: you can't know them all :-)
Lila Darkmatter: some people have almost aggressive reactions to openness
    Lila Darkmatter: strange thing
    Storm Nordwind nods
Eos Amaterasu: it can feel like a precipice
Eos Amaterasu: or strike fear deep deep in
Storm Nordwind: the unfamiliar makes some people defensive
    Lila Darkmatter: hmm
Lila Darkmatter: yes, also shows the potential perhaps
Dash Earthboy: is the unexamined life worth living?
Aphrodite Macbain: any life is worth living
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Eos Amaterasu: people who don't examine their lives don't ask such questions
Storm Nordwind: And there are very many ways to examine
Lila Darkmatter: and maybe many lives
    Lila Darkmatter: :)

Eos Amaterasu: we can celebrate our brief moments here
Eos Amaterasu: especially this summer solstice
    Dash Earthboy: for sure
    Lila Darkmatter: cheers
Eos Amaterasu proposes a 90 second toast to the solstice
Lila Darkmatter: happy to spend it with you all
Storm Nordwind: Now the nights start drawing in
    Dash Earthboy: good timing Eos!
Aphrodite Macbain: Nice idea Eos. Does everyone have a glass of something?

    --BELL--

    Aphrodite Macbain: cheers
Aphrodite Macbain: here's to long sunny days
Dash Earthboy: careful Aph...we're in a drought here
Lila Darkmatter: Thank you Aphrodite! Cheers! Happy Solstice :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Cheers dear ones
Storm Nordwind: Here's to long sunny hearts and wide smiles
    Eos Amaterasu: Cheers!
Lila Darkmatter: here's to finding love in SL, in all its many forms
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
    stevenaia Michinaga: smiles
    Storm Nordwind:

    The full sun sets.
    The full moon rises.
Know the sun and walk in moonlight.

Lila Darkmatter: Oh, marvelous, Storm :)
Dash Earthboy: reminds me of being on my farm :)
    Lila Darkmatter: :::happy sigh:::::
Lila Darkmatter: sleepy one too... thanks everyone
Eos Amaterasu pulls Keats from out his sleeve:

And in the midst of this wide quietness
A rosy sanctuary will I dress
With the wreath'd trellis of a working brain,
With buds, and bells, and stars without a name,
With all the gardener Fancy e'er could feign,
    Who breeding flowers, will never breed the same;
And there shall be for thee all soft delight
    That shadowy thought can win,
A bright torch, and a casement ope at night,
To let the warm Love in!

    Lila Darkmatter lingers...
Eos Amaterasu needs to go, but is lingering also
Dash Earthboy: time for me to prepare for an early rising...
    stevenaia Michinaga: bye Lila, Eos
    Lila Darkmatter: so beautiful
    Lila Darkmatter: G'night
Dash Earthboy: it's summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime!
Eos Amaterasu: by all, thank you for being here!
    Dash Earthboy: gtsy 'all
    Lila Darkmatter: yes pleasant sleeps
    Lila Darkmatter: thanks
    Storm Nordwind: Namaste

To answer Gretch's question: It is absolutely NOT possible for non-Lindens to listen in on your IMs, those are entirely private. And while it is technically possible for the Lab to listen to any *particular* IM, the fact that there are fewer than 250 Lindens would suggest that they cannot possibly listen to *all* IMs. Unless you've given them just cause to be concerned about your actions, I truly cannot imagine that they would be listening to you.

If you use Phoenix (and possibly other third party viewers) you can encrypt your IMs with other Phoenix users, so that not even the Lindens can view them. (That is under Edit/Preferences/Phoenix/Page1/IM/ and then the various OTR options.) Personally, I don't bother; but it's there if you want it.

I should clarify this a little, because I can hear the pedants queueing up to object. There is no mechanism *inside SL* by which people outside of your IM could listen to it. If you are using an unsecured wifi connection, or a computer infected with malicious software, or if there's a camera hidden in the wall behind you, then *of course* your conversation might be eavesdropped on in these ways. But that is nothing new, and not specific to SL. edited 04:07, 26 Jun 2011
