coincidences and unlikelynesses

Eherim Infinity: Hmm. I'd like to dicsuss coincidences and unlikelynesses.

Eherim Infinity: And what to do when something that's just to unlikely to happen happens.
Wol Euler: perhaps we adjust our ideas of probability?
Wol Euler: reconsider how we made that evaluation?
Eherim Infinity: Yes, or dismiss the term.
Wol Euler: perhaps there was a factor we left out, when considering how unlikely X was
Wol Euler: or perhaps just the timescale: when we say something is a "once in a hundred years" event, that does NOT mean that it can't happen tomorrow.
Eherim Infinity: Well - you know people with skitzofrenia seldomly know they are sick. They don't realize that what they experience is a hallucination. Perhaps unlikeliness is a sign of something fundamental being twisted?
Eherim Infinity: The aktualization of the world being more concious than usually.
Wol Euler: I'm not sure. Do you suggest that the improbable event means that reality is "twisted", or that we are misunderstanding reality?
Eherim Infinity: The latter.
Wol Euler: well, we probably do that constantly :) even in cases where nothing "unlikely" happens
Eherim Infinity: The interpretaion of reality, that I am a big fan of, states that reality is partly created by our brains, so that we can cope with it, and partly created by the general idea of the world - consensus - what we agree uppon.
Eherim Infinity: Skitzofrenic people lack the consensus part and create a world of their own.

Eherim Infinity: I guess that unlike events could be explained by something in between those twoe extremes.
Eherim Infinity: - If they are so unlike, people wouldn't believe in it.
Wol Euler: the thing to remember is that what we call "reality" is a map of what exists, not the existing stuff itself
Eherim Infinity: Very true.
Wol Euler: it's necessarily incomplete,and parts of it are certainly wrong
Wol Euler: so basically, I agree wiht your last statement :)
Eherim Infinity: Thanks. Some very unlikely events happend to me lately, and talking it through makes it easier to comprehend.

Eherim Infinity: Well My collegue - I never really beleived in her gifts untill this week, where she asked if she could use them on this SL friend of mine, who I named this mermaid after.
Eherim Infinity: She said 5 or so statements and EVERYTHIG was dead spot on.
Lia Rikugun: dead spot on means correct

Eherim Infinity: And not typical things but very specific stuff.
Eherim Infinity: Yes.

Eherim Infinity: Then yestoday, when I was on my way back from town, riding my bicyckle I got so conviced, that when I came home and logged on, she would log on the moment after. I cind of just knew it, with a sensation of comfort. And of course it happend.
Lia Rikugun: giving it the possibility to be true will let you be open towards it

Eherim Infinity: I think, it's important that we enjoy those moments, and not just reject them as nonsense.
Lia Rikugun: as if there was a thought exchange

Lia Rikugun: and in the end you dont know if this is just coincidence or maybe something else

Lia Rikugun: but having this open I think is good
Wol Euler: perhaps coincidence is just the modern word for "miracle"
Eherim Infinity: I nod to that.
Wol Euler: calling something a coincidence basically says "I can't explain it"

seeing into the future

Eherim Infinity: Yes. About being certain of something is going to happen with a sensation of relaxed comfortness - do you know that feeling?
Eherim Infinity: And then it happends?
Lia Rikugun: i want to say yes, but i cant remember anything :)
Lia Rikugun: so maybe no
Lia Rikugun: or maybe you just forget because it does not fit into the structure
Eherim Infinity: OK, cause I have tried it a few times before too.
Eherim Infinity: When it happens, it's the most thrilling experience. It makes you feel quite close to reality.
Lia Rikugun: can you control that? or does this happen suddenly?
Lia Rikugun: when does this happen?
Eherim Infinity: I can't decide for it to happen at all.
Eherim Infinity: I don't know if there is a pattern.
Eherim Infinity: Mayby it helps to be in a relaxed comforting state.
Eherim Infinity: THere was this bowling tournament an evening with my colleagus at a workplace I used to work for a few years ago.
Eherim Infinity: And they had this competition of guessing the scores of all the games added together.
Eherim Infinity: With a prize to it.
Eherim Infinity: And when I had wrote my guess, I sort of tried to feel what to write, while relaxing.
Lia Rikugun: ah
Lia Rikugun: and?
Eherim Infinity: And then I just knew I would win, in a comforting relaxing way, and it happend.

Lia Rikugun: so by relaxing you find reality
Eherim Infinity: It's not something that happens very often, sadly. :-)

Eherim Infinity: Well, see if you can do it. I think most people can, but I also think that when moste people experiece it, it is rejected as coincidence or imagination.

Eherim Infinity: It could.
Lia Rikugun: but it doesnt matter it is still interesting
Lia Rikugun: when this happens
Lia Rikugun: of course if you can read your friends minds
Lia Rikugun: there is always a logical explanation
Eherim Infinity: Only thing, I haven't felt the compforting certainty when it didn't come true. But still that could also be a coincidence, that's true.
