DR42 Resident: 's current display-name is "Chiff Chaff".
Catrinamonblue Resident: 's current display-name is "Catrinamonblue".
Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Rosatta :) Maude :)
    DR42 Resident: ηαмαѕтє
DR42 Resident: I was off editing a XML file.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Rosatta Resident: Namaste, Chiff. Hello, Cat : )
    Rosatta Resident: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu8J9...812CA4D55E67D2
DR42 Resident: Some things you cannot change in SL, unless you get "dirty" and edit the XML files. :(
Rosatta Resident: I have Strauss polkas playing, if anyone would enjoy listening, also
Rosatta Resident: I don't know what an XML files is
DR42 Resident: I take it you read the blog from earlier today.
Catrinamonblue Resident: clicks on link :)
Catrinamonblue Resident: no missed that one
    Catrinamonblue Resident: brb
DR42 Resident: XML is how objects, windows in your viewer, what you are wearing, everything, is defined in SL.
    --BELL--
DR42 Resident: Stands for Extensible Markup Language
Rosatta Resident: I don't have any skills in progamming or scripts, so I probably had better leave that alone lol
Catrinamonblue Resident: back and I don't know much about that stuff either so will leave it alone too
    DR42 Resident: kk
    Rosatta Resident: Hi, Wol!
    Wol Euler: evening all!°
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Wol :)
Agatha Macbeth: 's current display-name is "Aggers".
Rosatta Resident: You are looking very furry to day : )
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Aggers :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Evenin
Rosatta Resident: Hello, Agatha : )
Agatha Macbeth: Good to see you again Rosie
Rosatta Resident: Hello, Korel : )
    Rosatta Resident: You, too, Agatha
    Wol Euler: hello aggers
    Wol Euler: and korel
    Catrinamonblue Resident: heya Korel :)
    Korel Laloix: heya'
Agatha Macbeth: Weird can't see cushion
Wol Euler: you were on it :)
Agatha Macbeth: Yes but I couldn't see it
Wol Euler: aph left a thing here in midair
    Agatha Macbeth: Good old Aph
    Agatha Macbeth: Hi Zon
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Wol Euler: hello zon
Rosatta Resident: Hell, Zon : )
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Zon
    Zon Kwan: heya
    Agatha Macbeth: No Liz?
Rosatta Resident: I am counting 12 people on the 'nearby' list, but I only see six of us
Agatha Macbeth: Some are at OF Rosie
    Wol Euler nods.
    Rosatta Resident: What is OF?
    Agatha Macbeth: Original face
Wol Euler: Original Face, a spinoff group
    Agatha Macbeth: Darren's thingy
    Rosatta Resident: Oh.
    Wol Euler: more purely buddhist/meditative
    Catrinamonblue Resident: http://wiki.playasbeing.org/Guardian_Pages/Guardians%27_Contributions/Calvino/Groups/Original_Face
Agatha Macbeth: TBH not sure exactly what they do there
    Rosatta Resident: Ah.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: for those interested
Rosatta Resident: I like the discussions that occur here : )
    Catrinamonblue Resident: likewaise :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: likewise*
Rosatta Resident: Does anyone have any thoughts on our topic?
Agatha Macbeth: They just need a kick start sometimes
Rosatta Resident: Which I forgot to read before sitting down - again
    Agatha Macbeth: Me too
    Rosatta Resident: Hypocrisy
Agatha Macbeth: Oh yes, I remember us choosing it now
Rosatta Resident: I'm sorry I missed the GM. It would have been interesting to know how that came up
Agatha Macbeth: It's ln the logs ;-)
Wol Euler: we had a bit of talk about that last night already, and wondered how it came up, and what it was meant to be asking
Wol Euler: aggers, you were there, could you enlighten us please?
    Agatha Macbeth: I can't remember
    --BELL--
Rosatta Resident: Ty, Agatha. I keep forgetting to read the logs
    Catrinamonblue Resident: http://wiki.playasbeing.org/Chat_Logs/2013/06/2013.06.30_08%3a00_-_Guardian_Meeting
Catrinamonblue Resident: for those who wish to read
Agatha Macbeth: Proof that recording sessions *does* work see
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Agatha Macbeth: Specially with a memory like mine
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Wol Euler chuckles.
Wol Euler: aw, so I missed compassion and empathy while I was at work last week
    Wol Euler: damn
Catrinamonblue Resident: we could certainly revisit it Wol :) I like it better then this weeks topic
Agatha Macbeth: Well we could do that now instead
    Catrinamonblue Resident: snap
Rosatta Resident: Yep. No chains on us :-D
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed
Agatha Macbeth: Wrong sim for that :p
Wol Euler: all right! lay on, macduff
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Your thoughts Wollie?
Wol Euler: none so far, I was hoping perhaps for a bit of a round-up of what was said?
Catrinamonblue Resident: Empathy requires no action where compassion compels action A person can show strong empathy and yet not be compassionate when they do not act to alleviate the suffering of another.
Agatha Macbeth: Hm, I waqsn't actually here very much
Catrinamonblue Resident: My thought was that while compassion has empathy as a component empathy does not necessarily have compassion
    Wol Euler: interesting!
Wol Euler: so empathy is ... abstracted, say, no personal connection?
    Catrinamonblue Resident: imo yes
    Agatha Macbeth: Sera QT :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Qt
    Qt Core: Hi all!
    Korel Laloix: Heya
    Wol Euler: hello qt
Wol Euler: empathy means feeling someone's pain, compassion means wanting to lessen it?
Wol Euler: that sounds plausible :)
Catrinamonblue Resident: I'm very open to hearing other ideas, thses were just my own thoughts on the subject
    Wol Euler looks around.
Qt Core: what about realizing/understanding someone's pain instead that feeling ?
    --BELL--
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: as a definition of empathy? works for me
Qt Core: i was going for something different from it, its cerebral colder version
    Agatha Macbeth smiles
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Qt Core: why would i feel someone else pain if i can just know it ;-)
    Agatha Macbeth: Good question actually
Qt Core: maybe feeling it would push me harder in help the original sufferer ?
    Agatha Macbeth nods
Arisia Vita: 's current display-name is "Ari".
    Agatha Macbeth: Hello Ari :)
    Arisia Vita: greetings all
Wol Euler: so empathy is about knowing the pain, and compassion about feeling it?
    Wol Euler: hello ari
Qt Core: all i spoke about was empathy in my opinion
Qt Core: is empathy a passive thing and compassion an active one ?
Wol Euler: true; I was extending that in my head to the pairing "empathy / compassion" that was last week's topic
Wol Euler: if there is a difference between the words it seems to me worthwhile to know what the difference is
DR42 Resident notes that most people forget the word "Pity"
    Wol Euler: say more, Chiffy?
Rosatta Resident: Pity seems to have some negative connotations, I think
Catrinamonblue Resident: I suggested the topic because I was feeling that there seemed to be a difference in my mind and that difference is in the active passiveness of each thought
DR42 Resident: The topic is "The difference between empathy and compassion and pity."
Catrinamonblue Resident: empathy being passive and compassion being active
Wol Euler: oh, I totally misread that. my apologies
Wol Euler goes back to the wiki for anohter look
Catrinamonblue Resident: pity I feel is the sadness left after all actions have been tried nad the person has pushed you away
Rosatta Resident: With pity seeming to have a bit of condenscension
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: definitely has that flavour for me
    Catrinamonblue Resident: not necessarily
Rosatta Resident: That is good, Cat. Ty
    --BELL--
Catrinamonblue Resident: pity doesn't have to be a negative thing, I think it is a feeling of helplessness that we sometimes feel as we watch a person self destruct and are not able to do anything to help them
Wol Euler: fair enough; but to me pity is the only one of the three that can carry a negative emotional load
    Agatha Macbeth: Agreed
Wol Euler: I can imagine pitying somebody and thinking them foolish to be in this mess
Wol Euler: I cannot think that I could be feeling compassion if I felt that way, not as I define it
    Catrinamonblue Resident: fair enough :)
    Wol Euler smiles.
DR42 Resident: Poor fool and knave, I have one part in my heart That's sorry yet for thee.
Wol Euler: aye, but only one!
Rosatta Resident: So pity can, but doesn't necessarily have negative overtones. That works for me
    DR42 Resident: King Lear.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: This is not necessarily a rational way of looking at this topic..... but when I was in my early twenties and trying to figure out what happened to me when I was little.... the people that I wanted to punch in the face were the ones that said they had pity on me.... but felt like they could not do anything... So to me, pity is sort of an emotion associated with apathy.
DR42 Resident thinks King Lear is about compassion.
    Wol Euler nods to Korel
DR42 Resident: When you are small, it is often those whom you should be able to trust that do the damage.
Rosatta Resident: I think feeling sorry for someone and doing nothing to help is hypocritcal
Rosatta Resident: That brings up the topic on the wall
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Wol Euler smiles.
Rosatta Resident: Can I punch some of those people for you, Korel?
Korel Laloix: Thanks for the offer.. but Ih ave already made my peace with them... smiles
DR42 Resident: I feel sorry for my father, yet I do nothing to help him. So I am the hypocrite?
Wol Euler: that#s better than punching
    Wol Euler: IMHO
DR42 Resident: Mind, he dies 7 years ago.
Wol Euler: depends whether you *can* help him, and whether he wants your help
Rosatta Resident: Cool, Korel : )
    Rosatta Resident: What Wol said
Wol Euler: hard to help somebody who's dead
Rosatta Resident: You can't 'help' and alcholic or addict who is in active addiction if they don't want real help. Otherwise all that is accomplished is enabling them to stay in self-destructive living
DR42 Resident: But I still feel sorry for him.
Korel Laloix: Forgiveness is a very powerful emotion/action.. far more than compassion or pity maybe.
    Wol Euler nods.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods
Wol Euler: Do you feel pity or sorry for him? to me those are different
Wol Euler: (I know itÄs really oldfashioned of me to believe that words ahve meaning, and that it matters which word one uses.)
DR42 Resident: Wol, I am rarely gay. I havent been really happy in years... :)
Rosatta Resident: I think Native American culture is much more aware of this than most
Rosatta Resident: the importance of words used accurately
DR42 Resident: Yes, but please never leave out the "Native" part. Althought some who think they are native americans are certainly not.
Rosatta Resident: I have to be careful how I use the word 'forgive'. The culture/religion I grew up in used that word to get those who have been abused to shut up and sit down and allow the perpetrators to continue
    --BELL--
DR42 Resident: Navajo is such a language.
DR42 Resident: Hebrew is another language where exact word choice can be so subtile and yet impart vastly different meaning.
Wol Euler: as opposed to english?`:)
Wol Euler: I think that is always true, chiffy
DR42 Resident: Yes, as opposed to english, and worse, latin.
Agatha Macbeth: Bye for now peeps, take care
Wol Euler: bye aggers, sleep well
    DR42 Resident: bye
    Korel Laloix: Ciao bella
    Qt Core: Bye Aga
Rosatta Resident: I didn't meant he launguages - I meant the cultural awareness of how language is used
Catrinamonblue Resident: poof Bye Aggers :)
Rosatta Resident: I will use First American if that is more comfortable for you Chiff
    DR42 Resident: Well, that too.
Korel Laloix: Trying to sort out subtle shades of meaning in English is difficult.. one of the reasons I like SL.. get to pracice parts that I don't get to very often.
DR42 Resident is (trying to) learn navajo and is part cherokee.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: FA is my preffered term.
Korel Laloix: I don't really know anything of Navajo.
DR42 Resident: It is the quintessential slow talking, long thinking culture.
Rosatta Resident: I love Tony Hillerman's books
Qt Core: i have to go, bye all
DR42 Resident: NPR had a story last week about translating Star Wars to Navajo and all the very complex difficulties involved.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Bye Qt :)
Rosatta Resident: Glad you were here, QT : )
    DR42 Resident: bye
Korel Laloix: There is a Navajo powwow in AZ that I have been invited to dance in September...
Korel Laloix: Thinking of it, but not sure my school weill work with that.
DR42 Resident: Yes, Hillerman is one of the very few honored by being named a "Friend of the Navajo Nation."
Wol Euler: oh great, I hope it works out
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Wol Euler: how long would you have to be away?
DR42 Resident: Awesome. Dance your heart out. (but not literally.)
Korel Laloix: I think the moive Dance me Outside was with Navajo actors... not sure though.
    Rosatta Resident: Dance Me Outside?
Korel Laloix: I FA film about how life looks from our perspetive... in some ways.
Rosatta Resident: I will have to look for that.
Korel Laloix: It is sort of hard to follow and cheesy sometimes.
Korel Laloix: I Think it is on Youtube.
DR42 Resident: Yes, many FA actors/
Rosatta Resident: I enjoyed Smoke Signals
Korel Laloix: There really arn't a lot of good FA films out there.
    DR42 Resident: http://www.imdb.com/list/ZUdAMV4XsFI/?ref_=tt_rls_1
Korel Laloix: I favorite may not even count.... Koyaanisqatsi.
DR42 Resident: Best Native American Movies
Rosatta Resident: I got to see and grass dancer that was so good I said aloud when he was finished "He could dance that three more times!" And he did dance it again - I was sooooooo delighted : )
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Rosatta Resident: Ty Chiff. I will look at the page when we are finished here
Korel Laloix: Some of those I don't think should be on teh list... but it is alwasy subjective.
Rosatta Resident: And I got to see and hoop dancer who had the most gentle spirit and he talked about unity among all people as he danced. It was wonderful
Rosatta Resident: And he was an amazing dancer, too
Rosatta Resident: Well, I love the movies they made from Tony Hillerman's books : )
Korel Laloix: The only reason I ever win at powwows is my endurance.... I am not that good of a dance, but i can go on for hours.
    Wol Euler smiles.
    --BELL--
Rosatta Resident: The FA actor who played in Dances with Wolves (which I haven't seen) played on The REd Green Show. He is a fabulous commedian. One of his bits he made a joke about Dances with Wolves, that it wasn't any good because nothing got blown up, "but Native guy was pretty good" (his words - talking about himself. It was really cute)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Korel Laloix: Ih ave not seen it either.
Wol Euler: I thought that was a great film, fwiw. I still remember it from time to time
Catrinamonblue Resident: I saw the movie but a long time ago, don't really remember it
Korel Laloix: Some of those movies come accross as patronizing so hard for me to keep open to them.
    Wol Euler nods.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods
Rosatta Resident: I wish I could remember the actor's name
DR42 Resident: Yes, very much so. That is why Hillermans books are so good.
Rosatta Resident: He played a pyromaniac that loved to blow things up on The REd Green Show - one of my favorite characters
    Catrinamonblue Resident: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_...ne_%28actor%29
    Wol Euler: Graham Greene
    Wol Euler: yes
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Rosatta Resident: Ty : )
Wol Euler: yet anohter famous American actor who's actually canadian :)
Rosatta Resident: So saying it wasn't any good, was part of the joke
    DR42 Resident: Kicking Bird.
Rosatta Resident: He also joked about Bridges of Madison Country
    Rosatta Resident: County
Rosatta Resident: He said there wasn't a dry eye in the place at the end, and he could understand that because they didn't blow up a single bridge
    Catrinamonblue Resident: smiles
Rosatta Resident: He is really a cute commediene
    Wol Euler: brb, RL interrupts
Korel Laloix: I think he might have MCed at a couple of powwows I dance at as well.
DR42 Resident: He is American. His people were from the FA. Before there were Americans and Canadians.
Arisia Vita: It's been great being with you all but I too must fly...be well and happy till we meet again, which will be soon I hope.
    Korel Laloix: Take care.
Rosatta Resident: OH, you lucky duck! Korel
Catrinamonblue Resident: Bye Ari ty for being here :)
    Arisia Vita: bye for now
Korel Laloix: I am off to another chat...
Rosatta Resident: He's one of those celebrities I would love to see in rl
DR42 Resident: I am off as well.
Rosatta Resident: See you later, Korel
    Rosatta Resident: Good by, Ari
Catrinamonblue Resident: Bye Korel :) Chiff :)
Rosatta Resident: Thank you for being here, Chiff
Rosatta Resident: You brought up things than made this a very nice chat
Korel Laloix: do da ga go hv i
    DR42 Resident: yw
Rosatta Resident: Love your avatar, Wol
DR42 Resident: Like I said before, I ask questions but offer no answers.
DR42 Resident: Time to consider what is for dinner. :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Rosatta Resident: There is an important question that hopefully has an answer :-D Dinner
Rosatta Resident: When I lived in a predominantly African American area I was often made to feel ashamed for being white. I can understand how others have been made to feel ashamed of their own ethnicity. But I grew up on National Geographics and I have always loved the beauty each culture has to offer.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods
Rosatta Resident: Right now I am listening to Strauss waltzes. I am so glad they exist
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Rosatta Resident: And I am not really happy that the entire world is becoming homoginized. Where is the uniqueness that is so amazing and delightful going to come from in the future? We will see, there will always be something, but nothing like isolated cultural groups
Rosatta Resident: So we need to preserve what we can
Rosatta Resident: I would love to see each human delight in his or her own heritage, but respect and delight in that of others, also
Catrinamonblue Resident: yes globalization has mixed us all together in a melting pot
Catrinamonblue Resident: sometimes we lose our heritage
Rosatta Resident: It is really beautiful and amazing the things that are developing from the 'flavor' of different heritages
Rosatta Resident: Yes. My daughter was feeling deeply that whites in America dont' really have a heritage
Rosatta Resident: She was seeing so many other peoples finding pride in their identity, but what is a white American?
    Wol Euler: back, reading
Rosatta Resident: My ancestory is 100% Engish, as far as I know, so we began to research Anglo Saxons to give her a sense of roots
Rosatta Resident: wb Wol : )
Catrinamonblue Resident: a mix of heritages :) we each can create our own identity Ithink :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: WB Wol :)
    --BELL--
Catrinamonblue Resident: I'm half Newfie half Dutch :)
Rosatta Resident: We couldn't find much for a very long time and it was beginning to look like Anglo Saxons didn't have much to offer compared to everyone else until we saw an episode of a BBC mystery entitled 'The Wolvercot Tounge'. It was the tounge of a buckle set and it was amazing. That opened the door.
Rosatta Resident: What is a Nefie, Cat?
    Rosatta Resident: Newfie
Catrinamonblue Resident: :) from Newfoundland :)
Rosatta Resident: That is the east coast of Canada?
    Catrinamonblue Resident: yes
Rosatta Resident: Where do Newfies' ancestors hail from?
Rosatta Resident: Is that Viking stock?
Catrinamonblue Resident: Not sure really I don't know any further back than my grandfather
Wol Euler: it is suggested as a possible location of the lost colony of Vineland, but nobody knows for certain
Wol Euler: there is no inhabitation from taht date so it's extremely unlikely
Rosatta Resident: Someone needs to do some DNA testing lol
    Wol Euler nods.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: lol :)
Wol Euler: my dears, somebody else needs to do some getting ready for bed
Wol Euler: this was fascinating, thank you
Catrinamonblue Resident: yes and finding of dinner :)
Wol Euler: good night, take care, be well fed
Rosatta Resident: It was good to have you, Wol
    Catrinamonblue Resident: ty Wol :)
Rosatta Resident: It is alwasy good to have you : )
Rosatta Resident: Ty, Cat for everything you contributed
Rosatta Resident: You are a sweet soul
Catrinamonblue Resident: :) awww ty Rosatta
Catrinamonblue Resident: it's always interesting here :)
Rosatta Resident: Only the truth :-D
    Rosatta Resident: It is
Catrinamonblue Resident: bye for now then :)
    Rosatta Resident: Bye (((hugs)))
