DR42 Resident: I think so. I have a calling card from when we met before.
Santoshima Resident: your name has changed?
Santoshima Resident: i do't recall this current name or avi.
DR42 Resident: SAorry about the confusion over the class, it was from iTunes U, not Coursera.
Santoshima Resident: pardon?
Santoshima Resident: was asking about your avi name
Santoshima Resident: and appearance
Santoshima Resident: do you go by another name here?
DR42 Resident: My name is Dame Marjorie Chardin, but please, call me Maude. All my friends do..
Santoshima Resident: ah ok
Santoshima Resident: what are your interests, Maude
Santoshima Resident: ?
Santoshima Resident: what brings you to PaB?
DR42 Resident: My interests? Have you a few days?
Santoshima Resident: a short version is fine
Santoshima Resident: what is your interest in PaB?
DR42 Resident thinking
Lucinda Lavender: I was wondering if anyone would like to talk about the topic of contentment...
DR42 Resident: Philosophy, religion, engineering, linguistics, cars, old movies,
Santoshima Resident: sure, luci
DR42 Resident: Music, and music.
Lucinda Lavender: thanks for sharing Dr
Santoshima Resident: yes, thank you
DR42 Resident: How about yours?
Santoshima Resident: lately, container gardening
Lucinda Lavender: :))
Santoshima Resident: and learning about US policy on drone strikes
Lucinda Lavender: I bought two containers yesterday...
Santoshima Resident: great!
Santoshima Resident: what will you grow?
Lucinda Lavender: and am wondering what to put in them
DR42 Resident: Thai basil
Lucinda Lavender: I want some flowers but herbs would be good too
Santoshima Resident: good choice
Santoshima Resident: mix it up. both!
Lucinda Lavender: Thai Basil sounds great
Lucinda Lavender: will look for it
Lucinda Lavender: I put an olive tree in one container last week
Lucinda Lavender: hoping for olives
Santoshima Resident: wow
Santoshima Resident: how ig are these: container/tree?
Santoshima Resident: ig = big
DR42 Resident: In the summer, the deck onthe house is a garden of pots, they move inside for the winter. We have fresh herbs most of the year.
Lucinda Lavender: i know...the Pac NW is not what you would think of as olive growing territory
Santoshima Resident: nice
Santoshima Resident: well, it is a little grey and cold in winter, but otherwise probably ok
Lucinda Lavender: about 3 feet
Lucinda Lavender: it was made for this tep
Santoshima Resident: i've seen a robust olive tree in a pot in vancouver, maybe 5' tall
Lucinda Lavender: temp
Lucinda Lavender: wow ok
DR42 Resident: That is huge. We have a few (trees) that move in and out each year.
Santoshima Resident: it is on wheels. i think they must put it indoors in the winter
Lucinda Lavender: nods
DR42 Resident: a 12' rubber tree.
--BELL--
Santoshima Resident: you seasnally wheel that 12' rubber tree?
Santoshima Resident: seasonally
DR42 Resident: It's on rollers :)
Lucinda Lavender: I bet it is heavy
DR42 Resident: The room right off the deck has arched ceilings. So, it doesn't move far.
Lucinda Lavender: ah
DR42 Resident: Are you content? Do you strive for change?
Lucinda Lavender: I find I do strive for change some...and was thnking that contentment is kind of like happiness...in someways
Lucinda Lavender: I am up and down...
Lucinda Lavender: more up than down
Lucinda Lavender: but I sense that contentment is very enriching
Lucinda Lavender: it does not happen that often
DR42 Resident: I guess it depends on what the base of that contentment is.
Lucinda Lavender: it feels mysterious to me
Lucinda Lavender: yes...it seems to need a base
Lucinda Lavender: but when it happens almost of its own accord it seems mysterious
DR42 Resident: For some, it is the amassing of material possessions, for others, the state of hopelessness. (e.g. not living based on hope.)
Lucinda Lavender: it was introduced to me in a yoga class...
Lucinda Lavender: and it is new as a topic to me
Lucinda Lavender: not living based on hope..feels freeing in a sense
DR42 Resident: Ah. In western culture, words like "hopelessness" have such a charged meaning.
Lucinda Lavender: sort of points to the present moment
Lucinda Lavender: taking off the trappings of achievement
DR42 Resident: Yes, not living based on hoping to win that megabucks drawing, or getting some big settlement from a court case.
DR42 Resident: The Bible says "Faith, Hope, and Charity..." I think living with the first two is a false life.
Lucinda Lavender: I know someone who has an attitude of holding others as able...
Lucinda Lavender: and since I work in the field of education there is a mood of that around me
Lucinda Lavender: just a thought
DR42 Resident: What do you mean by "holding others as able"?
--BELL--
Lucinda Lavender: it almost sounds like hope...but I do not know really...just thinking outloud
Lucinda Lavender: i think it attempts to be an attitude of openess
Lucinda Lavender: so that those who are unsure in life can go ahead and imagine new possibilities
DR42 Resident: New possibilities, different than hoping for a change.
Lucinda Lavender: yes...two different things:) nice to see that...
Santoshima Resident: that mood and basic feeling about others ... what effect does it have, do you think? Luci?
Lucinda Lavender: it inspires perhaps and encourages
Santoshima Resident: and ChiffChaff?
Lucinda Lavender: I can imagine that it is also used to suggest others not give up
DR42 Resident: Not giving up conflicts with living inthe moment.
Lucinda Lavender: sort of seems so...
DR42 Resident: Accepting one's situation, and not hoping for change is a pillar of contentment.
Santoshima Resident: pillar?
DR42 Resident: When you can base your life on hopelessness, then you find contentment sneaking in the back door.
Lucinda Lavender: perhaps it is used let go of doubt as to the outcome surrounding others
DR42 Resident: Yes, pillar. Contentment irests on a foundation of many aspects, hopelessness is but one of the supports.
Santoshima Resident: are you speaking from experience, Chiff?
Santoshima Resident: care to give an example from your own experience?
DR42 Resident: Mostly. I was a person who, in my much younger days, thought conenment was reached thru material psoetions.
DR42 Resident: possessions.
DR42 Resident: My fingers are a bit slow today. :(
Santoshima Resident: NP
Santoshima Resident: *NP
Lucinda Lavender: :)
Lucinda Lavender: I will have to go soon...
Santoshima Resident: me too
Lucinda Lavender: I have enjoyed this ...
Santoshima Resident: now, really
Santoshima Resident: thank you for this talk
Santoshima Resident: good to see you both
Lucinda Lavender: thank you for being here all:)
DR42 Resident: Yes, it is rare that these chats got for 1 1/2 hours.
DR42 Resident: *go
Lucinda Lavender: so much to think about
DR42 Resident: have a wonderful and safe day.
Santoshima Resident: we are all typing slowly slowly ... great day, gals
Santoshima Resident: bfn
Lucinda Lavender: and may contentment reveal itself to you
DR42 Resident: :)
