2012.08.02 13:00 - Crashes and Airports (erk)

The Guardian for this meeting was Agatha Macbeth. The comments and crashes are by Agatha Macbeth.

    TwitchyEars Resident: hello
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh hello
      --BELL--1300
Agatha Macbeth: I just gave you a notecard about us
TwitchyEars Resident: yes i was here last night
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh I see
Agatha Macbeth: Sorry, lag is awful here again
TwitchyEars Resident: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.p...=fs_very_laggy lag help and tips
    Agatha Macbeth: Ah, thank you
TwitchyEars Resident: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_speedtest how to set your bandwidth properly too
Agatha Macbeth: I think it's more a problem for LL to sort out tho
TwitchyEars Resident: sometimes but there is stuff you can do to help
TwitchyEars Resident: bandwidth too high or low for instance makes problems. so does having draw distance too high
Agatha Macbeth: Oh I've done all that long since
Agatha Macbeth: There is definitely a prob with the sim
    TwitchyEars Resident: ping is ok
    TwitchyEars Resident: its script time
Agatha Macbeth: Something to do with physics time
    TwitchyEars Resident: thats low
Agatha Macbeth: 4ms instead of 1ms or something
TwitchyEars Resident: sims get 20ms script time you have on average 3.5ms free thats your lag
TwitchyEars Resident: too many scripts operating
Agatha Macbeth: Guess it's for Storm and the Lindens to sort out...
Agatha Macbeth: I don't do technical stuff so dunno
TwitchyEars Resident: i used to gm on a rp sim so was always sorting out ppls lag problems
Agatha Macbeth: 'gm on a rp'?
TwitchyEars Resident: gm is games master aka babysitter / solver of ppls fights / referee rp = role play
    Agatha Macbeth: Ah
Agatha Macbeth: I think I understand
    Agatha Macbeth: (sort of)
TwitchyEars Resident: hang on ill show you
TwitchyEars Resident: this was getting a role play started on the sim
TwitchyEars Resident: so its just me but it came to more ppl too
    Agatha Macbeth: I see
TwitchyEars Resident: i play a silly uneducated neko its fun :)
    Agatha Macbeth: I like nekos
    TwitchyEars Resident: mine isnt pink
TwitchyEars Resident: shes grubby and messy
    TwitchyEars Resident: more realistic
Agatha Macbeth: Don't think most of em are :p
TwitchyEars Resident: when i first started sl was tons of them
Agatha Macbeth: Yes, I have a few outfits myself
       --BELL--1315
    Wol Euler: evening all
    TwitchyEars Resident: hello
Wol Euler: hello twitchy, nice to meet you
Wol Euler: oops, there goes aggers
TwitchyEars Resident: nice meeting you too. i like that outfit have one similar
    Wol Euler smiles.
    Wol Euler: nicely summery
    TwitchyEars Resident: yus
TwitchyEars Resident: should be in a massive garden full of flowers birds butterflys
    Wol Euler: heheh, yeah
Wol Euler: I hope Aggers gave you an introduction to the group before she popped off?
TwitchyEars Resident: i was here last night actually
TwitchyEars Resident: liked it enough to come back
    Wol Euler: ah :)
Wol Euler: okay, so you've had the notecard and the formal introduction :) good :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: yus
    Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: "no rp if i cant metagame", hehehehhe, I totally get that one
    TwitchyEars Resident: :D
TwitchyEars Resident: im addicted to rp its my sl crack
    Wol Euler grins.
TwitchyEars Resident: saw some hilarious screw ups. i used to gm on a rp sim
TwitchyEars Resident: gm = babysitter to dramatards
    Wol Euler: ah :)
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
TwitchyEars Resident: still fun tho :)
    Wol Euler: sure :)
Wol Euler: it's all about the people, really
    Wol Euler: (it = SL)
TwitchyEars Resident: when i was little i wanted a tail rl. when i saw nekos in sl i was in love
    Wol Euler: awwww :)
Wol Euler: it probably won't be a generation before such bodymods are possible
Wol Euler: assuming we survive that long ...
TwitchyEars Resident: im not sure if id mod me rl
TwitchyEars Resident: some dreams can only be dreams
Wol Euler: well yes there is that :)
Wol Euler: I'm too squeamish for a tattoo, I really can't see myself getting a tail or whatever fittee
    Wol Euler: *fittted
    TwitchyEars Resident: LOL
Wol Euler: but it's fun here
TwitchyEars Resident: tats are fine if theyre planned right. what looks ok on a 20yo wont be so pretty on a 70yo
    Wol Euler: also true
Wol Euler: the henna tats are an interesting development in that sense, they just disappear after N years
    Wol Euler: wb aggers
    TwitchyEars Resident: wb
    Wol Euler waves.
    Agatha Macbeth: Wollie ♥
    Wol Euler: hiya
    TwitchyEars Resident: wb
Wol Euler: I was here before but I guess you were in mid-crash
    Agatha Macbeth: Guess so
    Wol Euler smiles.
Agatha Macbeth: Right I'll try again
    Wol Euler: boxy!
    TwitchyEars Resident: awwww how cute
    Alfred Kelberry: woly!
    Agatha Macbeth: Hi Alf
       --BELL--1330
    Alfred Kelberry: cute spring dress
    Wol Euler: ty :)
    Alfred Kelberry: hi, twit
    Alfred Kelberry: new girl? :)
TwitchyEars Resident: twitchy ... twit here is an insult
Wol Euler: yes, don't say that boxy :)
TwitchyEars Resident: tho i know you didnt mean it like that
Wol Euler: it means "idiot" in British
    Agatha Macbeth: Who's a twit? :p
    Alfred Kelberry: oops :)
TwitchyEars Resident: i CAN be one but dont set out to be :D
    Wol Euler grins.
Alfred Kelberry: so, tweeting is bad too? :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: haha
TwitchyEars Resident: your av is adorable boxy :)
    Alfred Kelberry: aww
    Alfred Kelberry: thank you ^_^
TwitchyEars Resident: how can my feet be ice when i live in a desert >.<
Agatha Macbeth: You look very flowery today
    Alfred Kelberry: ice? where?
    TwitchyEars Resident: mah paws
    TwitchyEars Resident: rl
    Alfred Kelberry: ah
Alfred Kelberry: let me guess... you're a friend of aga girl? :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: me ? no
TwitchyEars Resident: came here random with my partner yesterday
TwitchyEars Resident: came back for a meeting last night
TwitchyEars Resident: looooooved the art up above
Alfred Kelberry: on unrelated note, i got my dad a movie for the evening - we were soldiers. he has seen it before, but again was touched by the story :)
Alfred Kelberry: twity, random girl - nice :)
Alfred Kelberry: er, is twity ok? :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: thats fine :)
Wol Euler: there is art up above? where?
TwitchyEars Resident: adorable box puppies get away with more :)
    Alfred Kelberry: ^_^
TwitchyEars Resident: ummm in the molecule up there is an art display
    TwitchyEars Resident: paintings
    Alfred Kelberry: ah, cool
    Wol Euler: oh, them, right
Alfred Kelberry: it's actually a theater
Wol Euler: I thought you meant literally above us :)
TwitchyEars Resident: up in the sky
Alfred Kelberry: what's new in the architecture world, woly?
Wol Euler: interesting article in Die Spiegel on the debacle at the new Berlin Airport
Wol Euler: some real nasty screwups took place, if all that is true
    Alfred Kelberry: ouch
Alfred Kelberry: i heard it's one of the most expensive projects in germany
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: airports are traditionally horrendously expensive, and getting more so
Alfred Kelberry: yes... all the security measures?
Wol Euler: yep; and also the technology. Baggage handling for example, it's a very complex high-tech sorting system now
    Alfred Kelberry: cool
Alfred Kelberry: but, um... what is the problem? they ran out of money?
Wol Euler: plus the enormous difficulty of combining the security challenges of not letting the baddies through, with the legal necessity of getting everyone safely out in an emergency
Wol Euler: it's an incredibly complicated job
Wol Euler: the problem is too complex to explain here boxy, let me find the URL
Alfred Kelberry: no short summary? :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: hi bawb
    Alfred Kelberry: hi, bawb!
LuthienTalbot Resident: hello, I hope i'm not interrupting
    Wol Euler: hello bawb
    Alfred Kelberry: not at all
Wol Euler: have you been here before?
    LuthienTalbot Resident: just the once
Wol Euler: oh right, about a week or so ago
    Wol Euler: I remember now
       --BELL--1345
Wol Euler: your name wasn't "bawb" then :)
Alfred Kelberry: woly, would you like to build an airport? unless you already have :)
Alfred Kelberry: aga is back :)
Wol Euler: on the whole, boxy, I really think I would not want to do it
Wol Euler: it's so awfully complex and public :/
    Agatha Macbeth: What is?
Alfred Kelberry: woly, this is why it's so freaking exciting! :)
Wol Euler: designing and building an airport
    Agatha Macbeth: Ah, of course
    Agatha Macbeth: silly me...
Alfred Kelberry: now see, if you were the berlin airport architect, they would not end up in a mess :)
Wol Euler: I hope so, but I am not so sure
Alfred Kelberry: and i'd make sure that each flight of mine has a transfer in berlin :)
Wol Euler: many of the mistakes they made were probably inevitable given the scale and the pressure to hurry up
    Alfred Kelberry: hmm, yes
Agatha Macbeth: Which airport are we talking about?
Wol Euler: berlin; already nearly two years late and still not nearly done
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh dear
    Wol Euler: yeah
    Agatha Macbeth: Very un-german
    Alfred Kelberry: aga, yes!
Wol Euler: and extreme problems with fire control systems
    Alfred Kelberry: gah
Alfred Kelberry: sad to hear that
Agatha Macbeth: That's nothing, just wait til they start putting in all the security systems
Agatha Macbeth: It'll be quicker by boat
Alfred Kelberry: still, a very exciting project from both organizational and technological points of view
Agatha Macbeth: The chief object of the exercise is getting planes off the ground tho!
    Alfred Kelberry: safely :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed
    Agatha Macbeth: well hopefully
Agatha Macbeth: You're a space pioneer, it's alright for you :p
Wol Euler: found the link: http://bit.ly/Pqkxoz
Agatha Macbeth: I'm not even going to *try* opening that...
Wol Euler: save it for later, then
Wol Euler: it's the english translation of the Spiegel article on the airport fiasco
Agatha Macbeth: Hopefully I can stay here til the end then
Alfred Kelberry: thanks to woly, we know that planes are.. um... twice stronger than... er... max load test?
    Wol Euler: hehehe
Agatha Macbeth: Doesn't Berlin already have an airport tho?
    Wol Euler: two actually
Agatha Macbeth: Ah, from East and West days
Alfred Kelberry: yes, but they're old
    Wol Euler: yep
Alfred Kelberry: shonefield is so tiny
    Agatha Macbeth: What's Stuttgart's like?
    Wol Euler: pretty small
Alfred Kelberry: the new berlin airport is supposed to become the major hub in europe
Wol Euler: two terminals, but only one runway
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh wow
    Agatha Macbeth: Odd planning
    Wol Euler: mostly continental flights
Wol Euler: anything long distance runs through Frankfurt or Munich, or these days Zurich
Agatha Macbeth: What's the biggest then?
    Wol Euler: FRA
    Wol Euler: by far
    Agatha Macbeth: Ok
Wol Euler: I think it#s bigger than Schiphol even, probably second only to Heathrow in europe
Alfred Kelberry: what's the largest in the world? heathrow?
Wol Euler: I believe the largest is now in china somewhere ...
    Alfred Kelberry: ah, true
Alfred Kelberry: these guys are awesome
Agatha Macbeth: Lots of passengers probably
Wol Euler: my dears, I have to head off pretty soon, there's a concert starting in 2 minutes that I want to see
    Agatha Macbeth: Aha
    Agatha Macbeth: Hello Zen
Alfred Kelberry: enjoy it, woly girl
Wol Euler: hello zen, bye everyone!
    Agatha Macbeth smiles
TwitchyEars Resident: bye wol hi zen
Wol Euler: twitchy, nice meeting you :)
    LuthienTalbot Resident: bye wol
Agatha Macbeth: You did a Korel!
Zen Arado: Hi all, bye Wol
    LuthienTalbot Resident: hi zen
      --BELL--1400
Agatha Macbeth: At least I managed to stay on for ten minutes this time
Alfred Kelberry: are you on satellite?
    Alfred Kelberry: mr zen :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Sattelite?
    Alfred Kelberry: yes, your internet
Agatha Macbeth: Who d'you think I am? Phobos? ;p
Zen Arado: computer seems to limit more than connection I think
Zen Arado: I have a really fast connection now
Agatha Macbeth: Ok peeps, I'm off to join Wollie
    Agatha Macbeth: Have fun
    Alfred Kelberry: you! traitor!
Zen Arado: and it didn't really improve things in SL much
    Zen Arado: byee Aga
Alfred Kelberry: zen, a better gpu can improve things
    Zen Arado: cpu?
    Alfred Kelberry: graphics card

    GPU?

LuthienTalbot Resident: I've had problems with anything connected with the Internet lately, i've heard it's due to the olympics somehow
    TwitchyEars Resident: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.p...=fs_very_laggy lag help
Zen Arado: I have a very good one
Alfred Kelberry: well, i never really lag much
Alfred Kelberry: but then, i don't travel in sl :)
TwitchyEars Resident: i dont lag unless the sim is screwy

    And this one is!

Zen Arado: I don't have any problem here just saying when my connection aspeed went up it didn't make that much difference
Alfred Kelberry: bawb, bad excuse from providers :)
TwitchyEars Resident: lots of ram and even a middle grade graphics card helps
LuthienTalbot Resident: not being sure what a good excuse would sound like I'll have to take your word for that
Alfred Kelberry: zen: oh, right. it won't. sl can function perfectly fine with 1 mbit/s.
Zen Arado: lots of people lots of lag
    Zen Arado: I get 75 M bits s
Zen Arado: only notice speed if downloading something
Alfred Kelberry: a lot of people think more bandwidth = faster internet :)
Zen Arado: computer has to process it
Alfred Kelberry: but first the server has to deliver it. and its bandwidth puts a cap on your speed.
Zen Arado: my computer has to work hard if I use voice typing and a DJ program as well as SL
Zen Arado: ah yes that's true
Zen Arado: so no matter how fast my computert and connection I am limited by SL servers?
LuthienTalbot Resident: thank you for letting me join you
    LuthienTalbot Resident: bye
    Zen Arado: bye Bawb
Alfred Kelberry: more performant computer will crunch the client side code faster, but sl servers can output data only as fast
    Zen Arado: yes
      --BELL--1415
Alfred Kelberry: most people never utilize their high speed connections
Zen Arado: how do you mean?
Zen Arado: they don't use them for games?
Zen Arado: seems main time you need high speed
Zen Arado: or downloading films maybe
Alfred Kelberry: it's like having a pipe 50 cm in diameter with a small stream of water flowing :)
    Zen Arado: oh
Zen Arado: what can I do to improve?
Alfred Kelberry: file download, yes. it utilizes your connection as much as it can.
    Alfred Kelberry: improve what?
    Zen Arado: my utilization
Alfred Kelberry: download more stuff and keep it busy :)
    Zen Arado: ah ok
Zen Arado: thought I was doing something wrong
Alfred Kelberry: the point is, for an average user, 12 mbit/s is more than enough
Zen Arado: wonder what speed Linden servers put out?
Zen Arado: depends on no of users I guess
    Zen Arado: I better go
Zen Arado: starting to sound geeky :)
    Alfred Kelberry: :)
    Alfred Kelberry: right, me too
    Zen Arado: byee
Alfred Kelberry: twity girl, nice to see you :)
    TwitchyEars Resident: take care
