    Adelene Dawner: Not everyone does the 9-second meditations - I don't, for one - but those that do have found them useful, and the idea is interesting.

    Soren Reinard: but as an ant, you only move forwards and backwards, left and right
    Soren Reinard: you live in a 2-dimensional space
    Soren Reinard: so you see how 3 dimensions of space go to 2?

    Soren Reinard: how many dimensions to you think a thin straight wire has?

    Soren Reinard: now if you're a tiny being on the wire, how many dimensions do you think you have?

    Soren Reinard: yep, 1 dimension of space and 1 of time
    Soren Reinard: you could say the dimension of time is always there
    Soren Reinard: so we usually just talk about space

    Soren Reinard: so lets look at the wire this way, if you're an acrobat, the wire has only one dimension

    Soren Reinard: but if you're a super tiny acrobat, there's actually 2 dimensions

    Adelene Dawner: What I find interesting is when we get past the time dimension... we cound time as 4th, so what does 5d imply? 6? They say there's supposed to be 11 dimensions, what does that mean?

    Soren Reinard: we can define every process in the universe by a mathematical equation
    Soren Reinard: now, what these equations do is explain how things change in these dimensions

    Soren Reinard: now we scientists have this thing that nature doesnt have a bunch of different equations for different processes

    Soren Reinard: we've found that all the equations we have are perfect in 4-d, 3 or space and 1 of time
    Soren Reinard: bingo....why should nature differentiate? unless she's alive

    Soren Reinard: but that's beyond science as we cant experimentally test that idea

    Soren Reinard: if you do try to combine the basic laws into 1 basic law, you require 11 dimensions
    Soren Reinard: 10 of space and 1 of time
    Soren Reinard: and it's beautiful and elegant, and maybe that's what reality is

    Soren Reinard: problem is, it happen at such small sizes that we cant measure things there yet

    Adelene Dawner: Time doesn't make sense without an observer... it's a description of how a dimension is observed, not of the dimension itself.

    Soren Reinard: lets actually see how space and time came to be
    Adelene Dawner: I drew those lines as arrows for a reason... the whole line *is*, but we're pulled, or fall, or something, along the lines at an apparently steady rate.

    Soren Reinard: but to an ant on the same rope, it is 2d - the ant can go forward and back like the walker

    Soren Reinard: now the cylinder's surface is 2 dimensions, right?
    Adelene Dawner imagines walking around the outside of a cylinder and eventually going "haven't I been here before?"
    Soren Reinard: walking on the surface, you can go along the length and around it
    Soren Reinard: and there's your finite dimension

    Soren Reinard: coz you can keep going in that direaction without saying "haven't I been here before?"
    Adelene Dawner: But that only works... your repeating dimensions, I mean... if you have an observer limited to that dimension. If I step back from the cylinder, I can see that it's really a 3d shape and not a 2d plane at all.
    Soren Reinard: ah well lets be careful here....for you to actually "see" a dimension means you can measure along it
    Soren Reinard: if you're restricted to the surface, it's not 3d anymore
    Adelene Dawner: My point is, you're assuming an obbserver... that seems like a rather unsupported fundamental assumption...

    Adelene Dawner: I think what I'm getting at is... if there was no observer, what would be there? Or if there were observers with radically different ways of observing, what fundamental similarities would they find?
    Soren Reinard: it's 2 because the first mathematician saw 1 rock and anothe rock
    Soren Reinard: and said these are 2
    Soren Reinard: then he took away rocks and invented subtraction
    Soren Reinard: and you can see the concepts of division, fractions, functions, calculus, etc etc come from there
    Soren Reinard: ultimately, math and logic actually, depends on what we see
    Soren Reinard: now if there's no observer, my best answer would be...."i dont know"
    Soren Reinard: if there's obsevers with different ways of observing, the similarities would be reality, and the differences would be how they perceive reality
    Adelene Dawner nods. "So how about an observer who *isn't* inorexably pulled through one of the dimensions in a timelike fashion?"

    Soren Reinard: infact, science was originally just philosophy
    Soren Reinard: and it definitely is a lot of imagination
    Soren Reinard: you just imagine things, mathematically formulate them, test them....and repeat, till you come to something that works consistently

    Soren Reinard: but you should always know that a scientist always means "as far as we've observed..."
