2011.01.24 07:00 -A Friendly Arc

The Guardian for this meeting was Eden Haiku. The comments are by Eden Haiku who was joined this Monday morning by Bruce, Bleu, Zen and Lugh. This meeting is one of four weekly Theme Meetings about Being. The other meetings are Tuesdays 1am, Saturdays 7 pm, and Sundays 1pm. Our Circle of Being was merely an arc as we were only four members (later joined by a fifth), and the theme meeting was less formal, rapidly dwindling into a friendly conversation about our meditation practices. Zen's honesty led us to share as openly as he did.

Eden Haiku: Good. It's been very cold for the last 4 days. Minus 20 Celsius...
Bruce Mowbray: I woke up after a night full of SL dreams - thinking it was Friday. . . turned on the computer just before 9 a.m. for the Time Magic group. . .

Bruce Mowbray: Well, I just began reading it a few days ago --
Bruce Mowbray: and I must confess that I've been jumping all around -- looking for themes that directly relate to what we've been discussing here.

Bruce Mowbray: and I guess the first thing that impresses me is the ability of the author to state things simply...

Bruce Mowbray: The ease of his writing - without reference to ANY Buddhist terminology  so far anyway - is really pleasing to me.

Bruce Mowbray: It's as if he were sort of slipping my mind into a a very comfortable pair of slippers.
Bruce Mowbray: My edition was written in 1977.
Bruce Mowbray: The same year that I walked across much of America -- and was having very similar thoughts to those explained in the book.

Eden Haiku: Ordered TSK online last year, have read just a few sections while attending a few Time sessions on voice at the Kira Cafe. Still on my HUGE pile of books to read.
Eden Haiku: With the Internet, I end up postponing reading books to always another time… I used to read a lot. Not anymore :) Is it the same with you Zen?
Bruce Mowbray: I was reading three or four other books - as I usually do - and once I got started with TSK, it zoomed up to the top of the stack.
Zen Arado: I have a lot of half read books
Zen Arado: TSK I just couldn't get into
Zen Arado: it started with weird visualizations that I couldn't see any point to
Eden Haiku: I found TSK fascinating and then stopped...Same as with Don Quixote decades ago...
Eden Haiku: A yes, the giant body...

Zen Arado: and recommending you read up on anatomy? weird

Zen Arado: so you can visualize the blood and other bodily systems better
Eden Haiku: is appreciating Zen's sourly wit :)

Bruce Mowbray confesses that he skipped over most of the "exercises" and went straight for the 'meat" (not to be overly anatomical, here).
Zen Arado: I am usually open and sympathetic to books
Eden Haiku: Yes, I know Zen. That's why I smile :)
Zen Arado: read sympathetically first and then be critical is my motto
Zen Arado: but TSK lost me straightaway
Eden Haiku: ah ah you didn't do the exercises Bruce . Bad boy!
Zen Arado: don't let me put you off though
Bruce Mowbray: Oh, Zen, I am LOVING the book. . . (so I won't be put off by your honest comments...)
Eden Haiku: I didn't start doing them either :(
Zen Arado: maybe I am too rational and want things to make sense too much
Bruce Mowbray: It seems to me that he's going into considerable depth about Buddhist mindfulness -- especially Zen mindfulness - without once mentioning those "traditional" terms.
Bruce Mowbray: and he's also describing the phenomenological approach without mentioning Husserl or Heidegger
Eden Haiku: The reader always has the last word Zen. If you don't feel like reading a book then it's not the "right time" to read that book isn't it?
Bruce Mowbray: anyway -- I am enjoying his fresh approach -- although the book is now almost forty years old. . .

Sharing about our meditation practices

Zen Arado: confused about meditation
Bruce Mowbray: please say more, Zen.
Eden Haiku: What do you mean Zen?
Zen Arado: why do we do it?
Eden Haiku: To refill our soul, no?
Zen Arado: some say we shouldn't cos we are trying to get somewhere we are already
Eden Haiku: Connection with "inner body" makes us feel good?
Bruce Mowbray: To Be where we are . . .
Zen Arado: and some say concentration is most important
Zen Arado: others is investigating thoughts
Bruce Mowbray: It only matters, I feel, what meditation is for YOU, Zen. . .
Eden Haiku: Then we feel how the whole wide universe fills us, is part of us?
Zen Arado: if you keep coming back to the breath are you putting an 'iron wall' between you and your thoughts?
Zen Arado: spiritual bypassing emotions?
Eden Haiku: Thoughts come and go like the tides
Bruce Mowbray: I let my thoughts "ride on" the breath. . .
Bruce Mowbray: very gently riding --
Bruce Mowbray: like riding on a cloud.
Eden Haiku: Emotions do settle down after a while yes
Bruce Mowbray: and I only "concentrate" on the out-breath -- letting the in-breath simple come and go...
Zen Arado: but isn't the point to investigate them?
Eden Haiku: The only way through emotions is through them Zen isn't it?
Zen Arado: find why we are tossed around by them?
Bruce Mowbray: It only matters what YOUR point is, Zen -- Your meditation will be completely unique - (I feel that, anyway.)
Zen Arado: staying with them
Eden Haiku: I wonder if we can find out "why"'. Emotions are like Being raining, thundering, flowering.
Zen Arado: but what if I am dong it completely wrong?
Zen Arado: could waste years
Bruce Mowbray: I've meditated for over forty years and every single one of my sessions was "wrong" --
Eden Haiku: You seem genuinely anguished Zen.
Bruce Mowbray: it was also perfect, of course.
Zen Arado: uniquely bad bruce :)

Zen Arado: no - just feel a little confused atm

Zen Arado: like too many people in books telling me what to do
Zen Arado: and all different
Eden Haiku: Have you been doing Zen meditation for all these 40 years Zen, the same type?
Zen Arado: so how do you know who is right?
Eden Haiku: You are, Zen, you are the one who is right.
Zen Arado: 40 years? 6 1/2 years only
Bruce Mowbray agrees totally with Eden on that.
Eden Haiku: Oh, sorry, I confused Bruce lines with yours Zen.
Zen Arado: I have done all sorts of meditation
Zen Arado: mindfulness meditation

Zen Arado: Zen wishes he had a fire to stir...

Zen Arado: but couldn't manage the heavy work involved anyway....
Bruce Mowbray: Out here in the VERY RURAL countryside, we don't have much choice. . . Fire or freeze...
Eden Haiku: In the last 30 years, I have done Tibetan meditation for about a year, then tried many kinds of spiritual paths, then have done Hindu meditation very intensively for 9 years, living in ashrams and so on, then back to Tibetan meditation. Now I practice the 9 seconds breaks. :)
Zen Arado: gas boilers are so convenient
Bruce Mowbray: wow, Eden.
Zen Arado: and no meditation Eden?
Eden Haiku: Not anymore no.
Bruce Mowbray: . . . . I am often quite "utilitarian" about meditating.
Eden Haiku: I burnt out.
Zen Arado: I like meditating but most of it is just sitting thinking I fear
Zen Arado: but where does the time go I wonder sometimes...
Bruce Mowbray: Recently I've been using the 'structure' of the 6 Paramitas. . .
Zen Arado: you burnt out ?
Eden Haiku: When in Dharamsala last year, with thousands of Tibetan monks chanting, I easily went back to meditation. It is still part of me. Just not a regular practice anymore. Just dipping into it every 15 minutes or so for a few seconds.
Zen Arado: utilitarian meditation meditation?
Bruce Mowbray: Yes -- very utilitarian.
Eden Haiku: Yes, I felt carbonized Zen. I was in a cult.
Bruce Mowbray: That whole business of "starting at the end," for example - was quite utilitarian. . .
Zen Arado: maybe I am ending at the start
Bruce Mowbray: wow, -- with the Dalai Lama ? Sounds very powerful. . .
Eden Haiku: :)
Eden Haiku: Yes, with His Holiness. He almost cried when he talked about the Tathagata having overcome his sadness...
Zen Arado: I find it hard to have faith in teachers
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, Zen. . . that's one of the reasons I find that having a loose structure (like Tonglen or the 6 Paramitas, or the 4 Immeasurables -- to work with (guide) as I do the meditation, is quite helpful. . .
Eden Haiku: His head was bent on the scriptures for a loooong time. The whole Sangha stopped breathing...
Bruce Mowbray: otherwise, for me, it is just sitting there analyzing thoughts -- and that is not meditation, not the meditation I was to put effort into, anyway.
Zen Arado: there are a lot of contradictions in meditation
Eden Haiku: There are lots of contradictions in ourselves :)

Transmission of Being and being with others

Bruce Mowbray: The most powerful 'teaching' of any "teacher' is the transmission of her/his Being. . .
Zen Arado: but I am trying to figure it out too much I know
Bruce Mowbray: all of the words seem like empty boxes falling into the void.
Eden Haiku: Darshan yes...transmission of being.
Bruce Mowbray: but if there is Being -- then the wisdom of that being is transmitted without anything having been said.
Eden Haiku: Yes, just sitting here in this circle we are having "darshan" of each other beings...
Bruce Mowbray: ("wise" teachings without the wisdom of the teacher's Being -- empty boxes.)
Zen Arado: we should stay empty too
Bruce Mowbray: yes, Eden.
Eden Haiku: Our friends sitting together in New Orleans are touching a higher degree of "darshan" for sure...
Bruce Mowbray: and yes, Zen.
Bruce Mowbray doesn't know whether theirs is "higher" -- only that it is theirs and this is ours.
Eden Haiku: Meeting in person is the highest darshan.
Zen Arado: we don't have that at zen retreats
Zen Arado: we just all sit facing the wall
Eden Haiku: Though we can receive the darshan of a writer through the writer's words
Bruce Mowbray: What makes it "in person"? -- geographical closeness?
Zen Arado: so you don't even see the others
Eden Haiku: Yes, closeness or just being in the same geographical space.

Eden Haiku: Zen is a cold black tea style of meditation, tha'ts for sure Zen :)
Bruce Mowbray: I might be missing the point, of course, but TSK seems to say that all "geographic space" is but the reference points of "small" or "local" or "first level" mind.
Eden Haiku: I loved hinduism (and still do) with all the flowers, the incense, the dancing, the chanting, the bells...so sensual!
Bruce Mowbray: I am in darshan with the retreat in New Orleans right now - as well as in darshan with you both.
Zen Arado: so we are transcending that by coming to SL?
Eden Haiku: Yes, me too Bruce. I meant it goes much deeper into each other beings when we are in presence in the same space.
Bruce Mowbray: SL is simply another medium. . .
Zen Arado: we are meeting in the ether

Family darshans

Eden Haiku: I had a truly wonderful experience being with my family during the holidays.
Bruce Mowbray: I am happy for you, Eden.
Eden Haiku: We keep in touch through Skype and emails and telephone.
Zen Arado: but not the same?
Bruce Mowbray: The "holiday" for me has NO connections with family -- unless the "family" is humanity itself, and of course my tree friends and bird friends. . .
Eden Haiku: But seeing my niece who lived in Australia for two years, catching the light in her eyes, her smile felt SO GOOD.
Bruce Mowbray: Oh wonderful!
Bruce Mowbray: Truly.
Eden Haiku: And listening to my brother from Newfoundland giggling in the kitchen with my godmother
Bruce Mowbray: and SKYPE enables that to happen -- that joy.
Eden Haiku: And my other brother hugging me in such a warm way when he left...
Zen Arado: you are lucky Eden
Eden Haiku: Yes. How was it at your niece's party Zen?
Bruce Mowbray has never had such wonderful connections with family - even as a child.
Zen Arado: was ok
Zen Arado: I only see them once a year
Eden Haiku: Oh, that is so sad Bruce :( We are a bit your family though aren't we now?
Bruce Mowbray: Oh yes, you are for sure my 'family' -- but please don't be sad about me -- It is simply my "perfect path" this time around. ;)

Zen Arado: I only have my sister and two nieces as family
Zen Arado: and I never see one of the nieces
Bruce Mowbray: . . . . although when I hear of others' . . . sometimes just a touch of loneliness. . . (something to be with and breathe...)
Eden Haiku: I was overjoyed because they all came to our Three Kings brunch. I wasn't so sure they would. My sister has been doing a lot of estrangement in my family in the last two years and a half. :(
Zen Arado: Christmas can be a lonely time if you don't have family and everyone else retire into their little family groups
Bruce Mowbray: I have a sister -- living 2,000 miles away -- have not heard her voice for 18 years (at our mother's memorial service in 1993).
