Eliza Madrigal: The first time I heard this sentence I was very perplexed.
Eliza Madrigal: In emails preceeding a retreat, Pema shared his own practice of tasting the sentence "Appreciate the Presence of Appearance as a Presentation of/by Being" as a kind of mantra...
Eliza Madrigal: often starting at the end, like .... Being... presence... appearance... appreciation.
Eliza Madrigal: So when I began to consider the sentence, very much in a "Why Not" attitude, it sounded something like:
Eliza Madrigal: "opening.... allowing... appreciating"...
Eliza Madrigal: which overlapped my learning about 'inclusive' meditation in the Ways of Knowing workshop. It was then novel to me not to *try* to stop thinking to "meditate"...
Eliza Madrigal: the aspect of appearance, in this context...
Eliza Madrigal: didn't really come up for me until I began to bring the phrase out of my meditation spot....
Eliza Madrigal: by the it was a kind of underlying practice. Id written it down, along with

Pema Pera: the first round, when I focused on the sentence, I felt very strongly how upside down it is compared with normal ways of looking
Pema Pera: when we normally watch the world, we see solid objects
Pema Pera: and their appearances
Pema Pera: rather than primarily apperances which carry a meaning of solidity -- another appearance
Pema Pera: and it suddenly occurred to me how it must feel to die
Pema Pera: to suddenly be forced to let go of all that seems to exist so solidly
Pema Pera: just see their appearances one last time . . . .
Pema Pera: without a chance to go back and continue
Pema Pera: that kind of ultimate dropping . . . .
Pema Pera: we talk so much about dropping and letting go, but there are so many layers and levels of intensity
Pema Pera: then during the second round, I thought about being naked
Pema Pera: dropping all that covers, and then to become naked, physically or emotionally or in any way
Pema Pera: and then it occurred to me that whenever we talk about being naked, there is something still presumed to be present below/behind what we have dropped
Pema Pera: so I wondered how it would feel to be naked to the point of there not being anything left "underneath"?
