That evening, Pia was the guardian. The comments below are hers, as is the title.

I went to Zazen at 6pm today and afterwards chatted with Martie.

    Pia Iger: Hi, Martie,
    Pia Iger: you here often?
Martie Georgia: sorry taking care of my sick husband
Pia Iger: oh. np. I was not aware
Martie Georgia: That is this play at being stuff?
Pia Iger: what do you mean “that”?
Martie Georgia: I hear it mentioned, no clue what it is
Pia Iger: it is sort of exploration of reality. We do some 9-sec stopping every 15min
Martie Georgia: I was sent to a blog site and was more confused than before. LOL
    Pia Iger: Lol
Pia Iger: sure, it is confusing as old philosophies
Pia Iger: but basically, we stop 9-sec every 15min, then meet here to discuss what we find
    Martie Georgia: stop?
Pia Iger: like pause, stop our normal state of mind.
Pia Iger: do you know the word “stopping” or “sacred pause”?
    Martie Georgia: no.
Pia Iger: so you can see it as a mini meditation, just 9 second
    Martie Georgia: ah.
Pia Iger: but more important is to do it very often, every 15 min
Pia Iger: you kind of stop your autopilot of mind and ask yourself “who am I”
Martie Georgia: Hehe. I do that a lot more than once every 15 minutes.
    Pia Iger: Cool!
Pia Iger: so how do you feel when you do that?
Martie Georgia: sometimes calm, sometimes nothing. sometimes baffled. lol
Pia Iger: we often feel so too.
Pia Iger: But there is definitely new findings when you keep doing .
Martie Georgia: I have new findings everyday, My practice is my everyday life.
Pia Iger: great. Our idea is to integrate the practice to our daily life, You are already doing that.
Martie Georgia: Had to, No teacher, My life had to lead the way
Pia Iger: so our meetings is great help for us, we support each other, give encouragement,
    Martie Georgia: sounds nice
Pia Iger: you don’t feel you are doing it alone
Martie Georgia: yet we are each doing it alone.
    Martie Georgia: brb
Pia Iger: np, I am just hanging out here. reading notecard
    Martie Georgia: back
Pia Iger: how is your husband?
Martie Georgia: my hubby is my 9 seconds. lol
    Pia Iger: lol
Martie Georgia: Lots of morphine and pain. Frustration and compassion. He is my teacher, From him I learn compassion
Martie Georgia: why does this need a guardian?
Pia Iger: Ah, I am impressed that you put it this way
Pia Iger: guardian is important :) first of all
Pia Iger: we make sure there is someone at Pavilion
Pia Iger: so nobody comes to an empty house and feel disappointed.
    Martie Georgia: ah
Martie Georgia: may I sit in on one of thers things?
Pia Iger: If someone wants to talk at our meeting time, there is always a person to greet them.
    Pia Iger: yes.
    Martie Georgia: great.
Martie Georgia: is there one happening now?
Pia Iger: yes in 2 mins. actually I should go now. Do you want to come?
    Martie Georgia: please
Martie Georgia accepted your inventory offer.

We tped over to the Pavilion, where Dakini, Sigmund and Steve were hanging out, drinking coffee.

    Sigmund Schwarz: yes, Kundalini Gateway.
    Dakini Rhode: hi Martie, Pia!
    Pia Iger: here we are.
    stevenaia Michinaga: hi Pia
    Sigmund Schwarz: Hello, ladies.
    Pia Iger: how is coffee?
    Sigmund Schwarz: Good tonight.
    Pia Iger: Steve, Hi,
Sigmund Schwarz: I also teach meditation, formally and anecdotally, as well as do energy clearing empowerments.
Dakini Rhode: i don’t get kundalini gateway in the search, do you have a lm?
    Sigmund Schwarz: sure, ….
    Sigmund Schwarz: smiling
    Dakini Rhode: ty :-)
    Sigmund Schwarz: yw
Martie Georgia: I took healing touch and therapeutic touch.
    Sigmund Schwarz: ah, good stuff.
Martie Georgia: Loved one, disliked the other.
Sigmund Schwarz: How much of that was because of the person leading?
    Pia Iger: could be:)
Sigmund Schwarz: Who led the healing touch/
    Sigmund Schwarz: ?
Martie Georgia: it was the motivation behind it. Brute forcing someone’s chakras to move does not sit well with me.
Sigmund Schwarz: ah, no. That’s violence and well invokes reactions to resist and protect.
Martie Georgia: they behaved like plumbers using tools in a tool box. Healers and victims.
Sigmund Schwarz: cringing. Was the healing touch by someone in New Jersey?
    Martie Georgia: no in ontario.
Dakini Rhode: that seems insensitive, Martie
    Sigmund Schwarz: ah
Dakini Rhode: (I mean the training)
Martie Georgia: TT on the other hand supports self power. You assist the person to heal themselves. Gentle and benign.
Sigmund Schwarz: Can I freshen your cup, Dakini? Or, are you good?
Dakini Rhode: lol i seem to have the bottomless cup
    Dakini Rhode: :-)
    Sigmund Schwarz: representing the dharma.

I started the topic of PaB.

Pia Iger: Dakini, I just introduce the basic ideas of PaB to Martie.
    Sigmund Schwarz: ah
    Martie Georgia: curious
Dakini Rhode: martie, is this your first time with the playasbeing group?
Pia Iger: She said she actually does something similar as our 9-sec thing
    Martie Georgia: yes
Dakini Rhode: i’ve seen you so much at zazen, i didn’t realize…
    Dakini Rhode: and sigmund too?
Dakini Rhode: have you been introduced to playasbeing, sig?
Sigmund Schwarz: I seem to vaguely remember some things about it and how they are parallel to my own practice.
Sigmund Schwarz: I reframed it to being in/with all that is.
Dakini Rhode: my impression is that we might all do something slightly different…
Dakini Rhode: as I use the 9-sec pauses to do my own practice, too
Dakini Rhode: which seems pretty similar
Sigmund Schwarz: nodding. I do what I can to keep our common divinity in my mind at all times.
Sigmund Schwarz: sometimes, one aspect. sometimes, others.
Martie Georgia: I suspect those 9 seconds will feel like going home to me. a warm blanket, just like regular sitting.
Dakini Rhode: i’ve been all over the place with them…
Pia Iger: yes. yesterday i was saying I felt I was going home, or center of being , when I do 9 sec.
    Pia Iger: not physical home,
Martie Georgia: For me it feels like contentment. everything just as it is, warts and all.
Dakini Rhode: Pia, did you come to SL because of playasbeing?
    Pia Iger: yes.
Dakini Rhode: how did you learn of it?
Pia Iger: Pema had a talk at a group I go often, then I read the blogs
Pia Iger: It is extension of my RL practice.
Sigmund Schwarz: that’s a real commitment.
Pia Iger: I am quite committed in my RL group too.
    Sigmund Schwarz: I’m not surprised.
    Dakini Rhode: :-)
Pia Iger: cause I already see how much difference they have brought to my life
Pia Iger: and my state of mind everyday.
Sigmund Schwarz: It removes barriers to reflection.
    Pia Iger: right, Sig.
    Sigmund Schwarz: smiling gently.
Pia Iger: I felt I had wanted to do this since I was little, like 8 yr old
Pia Iger: want to know what is real, why I am here, etc.
Martie Georgia: I feel like I am from another planet with this discussion.
Martie Georgia: All I do is walk out my front door and the lessons jump out at me.
Dakini Rhode: martie i was going to ask you what planet you’re from…
    Martie Georgia: hehe
    Martie Georgia: I don’t know.
stevenaia Michinaga: I was going to ask what lesson
Martie Georgia: A lot about compassion, karma. practical application which is what I care about.
    Sigmund Schwarz: me, too.

Pema stepped in and gave more info of our PaB to Sig and Martie.

Dakini Rhode: i see Pema approaching…
    Dakini Rhode: hey Pema!
    Pema Pera: Hi everybody!
    Martie Georgia: hi
    stevenaia Michinaga: hi Pema
    Pia Iger: Hi, Pema,
    Sigmund Schwarz: Hi, Pema.
    Dakini Rhode: lol
Martie Georgia: have I missed the nine seconds??
Pia Iger: there is always 9 sec.
Martie Georgia: ah so it is not a group stop but, an individual thing
Dakini Rhode: it would be interesting if we would stop as a group
Pia Iger: we have a bell here , rings every 15 min.
Pia Iger: the sound last about 9 sec.
Pia Iger: now it is coming.
Pia Iger: did you hear it, Martie?
    Martie Georgia: yes

Pia Iger: many ppl do it when bell rings.
Pia Iger: then share what they see or feel.
Martie Georgia: um. I am doing it all the time that i am not talking. I just don’t get it, I guess.
stevenaia Michinaga: I did my first 9 secs after several months here, thank you Dakini
Dakini Rhode: :-) yw steve, what did I do?
    Pia Iger: :)
Pema Pera: Martie, the (roughly) four times an hour 9-sec exploration is primarily for RL, and then we get together here four times a day to talk about it, whenever we want, exchanging notes, ideas, questions, suggestions — but of course we can continue doing it here too. Some people do it only a few hours a day, some people basically around the clock — as you like!
stevenaia Michinaga: clarity of words “focus on breathing”
    Dakini Rhode: :-)
Sigmund Schwarz: The group meets here four times a day?
stevenaia Michinaga: there I go, sighing again
Dakini Rhode: friends, I apologize, I need to leave now
    Martie Georgia: bye
Pema Pera: 1 am 7 am 1 pm 7 pm, Sigmund
Sigmund Schwarz: Go well and be well, Dakini.
    Dakini Rhode: bye for now…
    Pema Pera: Bye Dakini!
    Sigmund Schwarz: smiling
    Pia Iger: bye
    Sigmund Schwarz: Quite the commitments.
Pema Pera: yes, we are spreading the commitments, though
Pema Pera: we have 28 slots
    Pema Pera: every week
Pema Pera: so we are aiming for having 28 individuals each taking care of one slot
Pema Pera: and the others coming when they want
    Sigmund Schwarz: A reasonable aim.
Martie Georgia: well, this is beyond my understanding, but if it bring you insight and peace. cool
Pema Pera: Martie, we are happy to tell you more if you like
Pema Pera: about what we do during the 9 seconds
Pema Pera: some people just like to explore by themselves
Pema Pera: others like specific suggestions
Pema Pera: we can give plenty of specific suggestions, if you prefer
Martie Georgia: I think I am already so immersed in a form of what you’re doing, I can’t see it. That’s ok. Enjoy.
    Pema Pera: Fine!
    Pema Pera: You too!

Sig describe his own practice to us. And impressively he stayed with us until the end of meeting, which was one and half hour long!

Pema Pera: Sigmund, have you tried this 9-sec exploration already?
Sigmund Schwarz: Not per se, Pema. I do what I can to have some part(s) of the divine field in my mind at all times.
Pema Pera: That’s a great practice, Sigmund!
Sigmund Schwarz: or to see things all as divine and go from there.
Sigmund Schwarz: Yes. That and compassion make a great mix.
Pema Pera: Yes, and that is one of the practices that connect various religions — that can be found in different forms in Buddhism, Christianity and anything in between
Sigmund Schwarz: nodding, plus just coming from my own space as opposed to going anywhere.
Pema Pera: yes, we call that “stopping” or “dropping what you’re doing”
Pema Pera: as one hint of what to do in the 9 seconds
Sigmund Schwarz: ah, I call it holding my space.
Pema Pera: do you find it difficult to be in continuous attention to the divine?
    Pema Pera: throughout the day?
    Sigmund Schwarz: depends.
Sigmund Schwarz: sometimes what rings truer for me is to focus within on aspects of divine within.
    Pema Pera: Hi Cal!
Sigmund Schwarz: sometimes, as I said, I do what I can to remember that what I see outside is also a divine reflection.

    Cal joined us.

    Caledonia Heron: hola :)
    Pia Iger: Hi, Cal,
    Sigmund Schwarz: Hello, Caldonia.
Caledonia Heron: hi Pema, Pia, Sigmund, stevenaia
    stevenaia Michinaga: hello Cal
Pema Pera: What connects us, Sigmund, is that we all have a kind of practice, or curiosity, to explore reality
Pema Pera: some in a more traditional spiritual way
Pema Pera: some just by our own lights
Pema Pera: some from a scientific or humanist background
Pema Pera: but the connecting part is the reminder
Pema Pera: the frequency and continuity
Pema Pera: that we all seem to need to work on the exploration
Sigmund Schwarz: yes, all our fingers point to the same moon.
Pema Pera: hence the 1% time tax
Pema Pera: 9 sec every 15 minutes
Pema Pera: and ideally then the exploration will increase to 100%
    Sigmund Schwarz: nodding.
Pema Pera: but starting with 1% seems to be very powerful
Sigmund Schwarz: I can see that.
Caledonia Heron: lol, I wonder about that 100%…what does that look like…..
Pema Pera: continuous awareness of the two frames of reference, the two coordinate systems, the relative and the absolute
Pema Pera: not getting lost anymore in the relative
Pema Pera: in association with our limited mind and body
Pema Pera: not denying that either, but seeing it together with and in and as the wider picture
Pema Pera: what religious people may call the divine
    Pema Pera: or Buddhists suchness
Pema Pera: and I like to call Being
Pema Pera: as a maximally neutral term

Cal has a beautiful image of Being.

Caledonia Heron: ah, thank you for the word description as I was making mind pictures :)
Pema Pera: harder to hand over pictures — wish I could paint quickly :)
    Caledonia Heron: lol
Pema Pera: like watching a movie while knowing it’s only a play of light and yet going really into it
Caledonia Heron: you bring the taxonomy I’ll bring some poetry….we’ll do a mash-up :)
Pema Pera: sure!!! Can you say more about your images?
Caledonia Heron: mmm, free, open, light, floating, sunny day, with the wind, no cares, sound of gentle water…..the grace of nature
Caledonia Heron: not too concrete is it?
Pema Pera: beautiful pictures! yes, freedom, openness . . . no real worries
Pema Pera: being able to drop worrying is so amazing
Pema Pera: like dropping a heavy load you got so used to that you had no idea you were schlepping it around
Caledonia Heron: it’s an imagined state of mind - that is sometimes available ….
Pema Pera: and then suddenly you feel sooooo much lighter
Pema Pera: yes, to go back to such an image can be very helpful
Caledonia Heron: yes, that moment in your thoughts when you let go, or like just before you fall asleep
Pema Pera: or just after waking up, yes
    Caledonia Heron: receptive times :)
Pema Pera: or in those rare nights when I get enough sleep, waking up in the middle and just lying still, floating, being . . . .
Caledonia Heron: yes :) at rest, all’s well
    Pema Pera: :-)
Caledonia Heron: it pleases me someone else shares this :)
Pia Iger: 2 days ago, after wake up, I found I was as usual quite sad,
Pia Iger: then I just thought I can drop off the unknown sadness
Pia Iger: and i tried, it was easy as flip a finger,
    Caledonia Heron: :)
    Pema Pera: wonderful flip!
Pia Iger: quickly, I felt light and peaceful.
Pia Iger: before I may just not know I have this option
Pema Pera: Sounds like you followed Steve’s recipe :)
Pia Iger: you can say that again:)

This triggered Cal’s curiosity. So, Steve had to wake up and share his recipe.

Caledonia Heron is curious about the recipe
Pia Iger: The meetings and sharings show me the new possibilites.
Pema Pera: (we may have to wait for Steve to wake up, Cal :)
Caledonia Heron: ok, I’m in for the long haul…..whenever it circles back :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: …smile
Pema Pera smiles back and around
stevenaia Michinaga: long day, actually been here twice today before
    Pema Pera: wow!
Caledonia Heron: gosh, a dedicated cook :)
    Pia Iger: :)
Pema Pera: Steve, I mentioned your recipe
Pema Pera: when Pia talked about dropping sadness
stevenaia Michinaga: my workmate may join us in the future, hoping it won’t affect office productivity
    stevenaia Michinaga: recipe?
Pema Pera: hahaha, the dangers of PaB!
    Pema Pera: workplace infection
stevenaia Michinaga: what am I cooking Pema?
Caledonia Heron: ha ha , viral enlightenment :)
Pema Pera: PaB cells here and there . . . .
    Pema Pera: PaB handshakes . . . for those who know . . ..
Pema Pera: mysterious bells every 15 minutes . . . exalted faces turning to the East
Pema Pera: mutterings about “see you in Rieul tonite”
Pia Iger: office scene of new century!
    Pema Pera: hehe
Pema Pera: So, Steve, I asked Pia whether she had followed your recipe — remember, a while ago you told Pia to “not worry be happy” but I forgot how you phrased it, pretty much like “why not just drop sadness”. So when she did, I wondered whether she had followed your recipe
Pema Pera: and then Cal wanted to know what the recipe was
stevenaia Michinaga: scrolling, you mean letting go… yes, soon there is no need to hold on to sadness
Caledonia Heron: things like sadness you can sometimes take off like a blanket :)
stevenaia Michinaga: recipe.. ask yourself what are you holding on to? (sadness, anger, etc) then ponder the point of it, is what I do, where usually isn’t any
Caledonia Heron: sometimes we wrap ourselves in things for whatever reason
stevenaia Michinaga: some sadness is depression is chemical, not sure this works for that
Caledonia Heron: yes say we call holding on to something a position we have taken
Caledonia Heron: you can keep or give up a position at will
Caledonia Heron: like Pia did when she woke
stevenaia Michinaga: I don’t know much about this but isn’t Tia Chi about force and letting go with motion?
    Caledonia Heron: I’m not sure
Pema Pera: yes, a way to express wu wei — not doing
    Pema Pera: 無為
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, I like that Pema…
    stevenaia Michinaga: avoid happyness supressors
Pema Pera: I think it is very difficult to drop something is that seems to be all you have — if you don’t see an alternative
Pema Pera: so what we are trying to do in PaB is to open a door to Being
Pema Pera: as the positive aspect of life, in the light of which anything else can be dropped
Pema Pera: A taste of Being
Pema Pera: can make you see that everything else is unreal
stevenaia Michinaga: is that what you put in this coffee

Is there a recipe to put Being in coffee?

Pema Pera: why hold on to what is unreal if you are not happy with it?
    Pia Iger: :)
    Pema Pera: :)
Caledonia Heron: what a great question
Pia Iger: Being is The alternative?
Pema Pera wondering how to put Being into a cup of coffee . . . thinking about Alladin
Pema Pera: Being is what is, and everything else is what we have and can be dropped
Pema Pera: but that sounds very abstract
Pema Pera: we need pictures, like Cal stressed
Pema Pera: one of my favorite pictures is a movie
Pema Pera: when you don’t know that a movie is only a play of light, how can you drop your sadness at someone dying in a movie?
Caledonia Heron: I get confused, if everything is so unreal, what about all these organized atoms that make things and all our ….Stuff!! and how we treat each other….sometimes deafeningly real but then it’s not really real….I’m going in circles…yack!
Pema Pera: but when you see it is only a movie, than you can, strangely, enjoy both happiness and sadness
Pema Pera: atoms are unreal too
Pema Pera: very much so, wave functions, potentialities, nothing solid there . . . .
Caledonia Heron: I know that at some level but try telling that to the guys at Livermore :)

    Then about time…

Pema Pera: and what is more, the time in which they appear is not real
    Pema Pera: :)
    Caledonia Heron: yeah, time shifting
Pema Pera: so we have to experience this — no other way!
Caledonia Heron: like it already happened but maybe it didn’t
Pema Pera: but we can help each other and ourselves to experience this
Pema Pera: that’s why we’re here and why we’re doing the 9-sec practice
Caledonia Heron: the unreality of time really discombobulates me !!!
Sigmund Schwarz: It’s real in the relative sense and unreal in the Buddhist sense that things always change.
Pema Pera: Cal, how about looking at each moment as totally new, completely self-given with all our memories and expectations; does that make sense?
    Pema Pera: yes, Sig!
    Caledonia Heron: yes aboslutely
Pema Pera: holding both is key
    Caledonia Heron: yes
    Caledonia Heron: lol
Sigmund Schwarz: yes, person and range, relative and absolute.
Caledonia Heron: that reminds me of a game at our house
Caledonia Heron: someone asks a question and if the answer is not what they want the response is how about now?
Caledonia Heron: and again, how about now?
Caledonia Heron: this goes on for a while until everyone realizes how silly it is
Pema Pera: like a child asking a lollipop, and after “no” asking again and again, hoping for a “yes”?
Caledonia Heron: remaking the moment over and over and creating recreating it each time
Sigmund Schwarz: That’s a great way to get past the surface stuff.
Caledonia Heron: not so much looking for the desired answer but kind of poking the other person….to rethink it on the spur, in the moment
Caledonia Heron: our kids love this game
    Pema Pera: ah, I see!
Pema Pera: yes, turning on a dime
Sigmund Schwarz: and getting off of the spot you’re standing on.
Caledonia Heron: kids are so in the moment sometimes, much more spry than we creaky adults
    Pema Pera: :-)
Caledonia Heron: yes, Sig, getting off it :)

After a game, we have a poem and a quote, then back to food!

Sigmund Schwarz: There’s a Sufi poem this brings to mind.
Pema Pera: Each moment really IS new, and we are the ones insisting in carrying all the bagage from the previous one into the next — very busy job, little time to smell the roses
Sigmund Schwarz: “How wonderful it would be to pull the chair out from underneath your mind and watch as you fall into God.”
Caledonia Heron: yes, Pema, that’s the game; that the moment is new and you can have a new answer :)
Pema Pera: wow, great quote Sig!
    Sigmund Schwarz: smiling
    Pia Iger: nice, Sig.
    Caledonia Heron: nice Sig :)
Sigmund Schwarz: It may be Rumi, but I’m not sure.
Sigmund Schwarz: It’s a great thing to do for oneself.
Pia Iger: as i see it, most ppl donot know they can take off the baggage.
stevenaia Michinaga: here’s one that came up on my quote of the day today……Things are more like they are now than they have ever been. - Gerald R. Ford
Pema Pera: yes, Pia, that’s the problem
Caledonia Heron: or that they are not their baggage or their history
    Pema Pera: hehe, Steve
    Sigmund Schwarz: That’s good, too.
    Pema Pera: Not Berra Yogi?
    Pema Pera: Yogi Berra?
Pema Pera trying to get his Americanism straight
stevenaia Michinaga: could be one in the same
Sigmund Schwarz: The great Yogi Berra.
Pema Pera: Steve is not wearing his Yogi title today . . . .
Pema Pera: hidden great Yogi Steve
Sigmund Schwarz: 50% of the game is 90% mental.
    Pema Pera: haha
    Pema Pera: yes
stevenaia Michinaga: I was showing a friend how to change groups earlier
Caledonia Heron: Yogi Berra is great but Yogi Bear always gets the pic-a-nic lunch :)
    Sigmund Schwarz: chuckling
    Pema Pera: hahaha
    Pema Pera: recipes!
Pema Pera: we are circling back to food
Pema Pera: like vultures around Steve’s kitchen
stevenaia Michinaga: I am the sous chef in my kitchen
Caledonia Heron: the Suess chef….rhyming food
    Sigmund Schwarz: smiling
    Caledonia Heron: *Seuss?
    Sigmund Schwarz: yes.
Caledonia Heron: fantastical, beautiful food that rhymes all the way down
    Pema Pera: magical
    Caledonia Heron: yes!!
Pema Pera: Pia, you put your finger on it: most people don’t know that there is anything else than worries and neediness, which seem to define us like biological creatures, based on Cal’s atomic material reality . . .
Caledonia Heron: I was just thinking how magical things seem lately :)
Pema Pera: the first step is hearing about there being something else
Pema Pera: the second step is exploring
Pema Pera: like we are doing here
Pema Pera: the third step is getting a real glimpse so that you start to see what Being can be
Pema Pera: and from there on it gets easier and easier
    Pema Pera: and magical, indeed!!
Pia Iger: what are the magical things Cal mentioned?
Caledonia Heron: say you can look at things inwardly or outwardly and when pointed inward you find things like sadness perhaps….and the magic I see is me looking outward which kind of bounces back to allow seeing inward…does that make sense?
stevenaia Michinaga: it’s just a change in our perspective, something I am convinced we are all able to do
stevenaia Michinaga: some do it easier and more often than others
Sigmund Schwarz: It’s like awareness leading to calm and calm leading to awareness.
Pema Pera: but is a moth circling a lamp able to fly away? Yes and no. I find myself often still behaving like a moth — until I catch myself
Caledonia Heron: agreed that perspective is a part of it but there’s more something out there….it’s not dark matter…it’s light matter!! and it’s hilarious and far freakin out :)
Pema Pera: yes, Sigmund very much so
    Sigmund Schwarz: nodding
Pema Pera: posture creates mood creates posture — gestures too — circles
stevenaia Michinaga: …smile, how can you not look at a smile and not recipricate
Pema Pera: 9-sec practice is a gesture
