Pema Pera: Hi Riddle!
Riddle Sideways: good morning
Pema Pera: good evening :)
Riddle Sideways: brb
Pema Pera: k
Riddle Sideways: back,
Riddle Sideways: too many interruptions
Riddle Sideways: no one else here?
Riddle Sideways: have been meaning to ask you
Pema Pera: nope
Pema Pera: seems that way :)
Pema Pera: yes?
Riddle switched to go.
Riddle Sideways: have you ever met an american Go student living in Japan named Robert Blasdale?
Pema Pera: no, I don’t think so
Pema Pera: I’m not very tigthly coupled to the go world, much as I would like to
Riddle Sideways: I have not seen him in 5 years and had his shodan then
Pema Pera: if a day had 240 hours, I would spend one tenth on playing go . . . . .
Riddle Sideways: ok, watch out for a tall blonde california kid :)
Pema Pera: :-)
Pema Pera: shodan professional?
Riddle Sideways: idk
Pema Pera: idk?
Riddle Sideways: I don’t Know
Pema Pera: ah!
Pema Pera: idk idk :)
Pema Pera: but now idk idk : as in I do know
Riddle Sideways: there is a current american tv commericial running that has idk in it
Pema Pera: ah — never watch tv
Riddle Sideways: others told me about it
Riddle Sideways: there is a loud bird in here that sounds like the Jay that wakes me each day
Pema Pera: :-)
And then he switched to our recent PaB history.
Riddle Sideways: I have been too busy this last week (make that 2 weeks) to write emails
Pema Pera: it seems that your wiki posting example finally has gotten many followers
Riddle Sideways: to the google groups
Riddle Sideways: but have read most of them
Pema Pera: yes, interesting times — so much happens here every week
Pema Pera: it really feels like every week here is so different
Pema Pera: of course there are 28 session in a week . . . . .
Riddle Sideways: I have 30 years in Aikido and non-conflict resolution / defence only stuff
Pema Pera: yes?
Pema Pera: wow!
Riddle Sideways: to read / watch how ya’ll approached conflict
Pema Pera: what did you see, from that experience background, here in PaB?
Pema Pera: Hi Cal!
Riddle Sideways: you dealt with things most wonderfully
Riddle Sideways: Hi Cal
Pema Pera: You arrived with the Ravenhaven Express :) ?
Caledonia Heron: hi there:)
Pema Pera: oh, thank you!
Pema Pera: It was my form of paying respect
Caledonia Heron: sorry to drop on you…didn’t finesse the landing to well :)
Pema Pera: returning compiments, so to speak, as best I could
Riddle Sideways: lol
Pema Pera: np, Cal!
Pema Pera: Hi Sky!
Riddle Sideways: something about a puff dress landing :)
Cal and Sky had arrived, and I respond to Riddle’s earlier remarks.
Pema Pera: Only later did I read your chatbot session though, that was fun!
Caledonia Heron: :)
Pema Pera: But honestly, I really respect Caspian. I don’t know whether I could have responded as well as he did.
Riddle Sideways: I had read no session with him before, so thought that the random verbage was a bot
Caledonia Heron: ah, we met last night
Caledonia Heron: :)
Caledonia Heron: hi Sky :)
Riddle Sideways: Hi Sky
Pema Pera: That is one point, and the other point which I very much respect is the way he adapted afterwards
Pema Pera: and understood in what way we did things differently
Pema Pera: hi Sky!
Pema Pera: Very impressive, on both counts
Sky Szimmer: hey there.
Pema Pera: But you started this thread with your experience in conflict resolution
Pema Pera: What would have been your approach?
Pema Pera: Cal and Sky, Riddle talked about his 30 years experience
Pema Pera: with aikido and conflict resolution
Riddle Sideways: was only seeding the chat… but would have been a combo of Dakini and Storm
Caledonia Heron: ok, thanks
Pema Pera: I’m not sure I parsed that : seeding? combo?
Riddle Sideways: seeding as in stating a conversation
Pema Pera: ah!
I ask Riddle about Aikido.
Pema Pera: sounds very interesting though, defense only
Pema Pera: how does that inform your daily life?
Riddle Sideways: handling situation as in somewhere between those
Riddle Sideways: I first took Aikido off the Mat into business practices
Riddle Sideways: managers that attack me in my office
Riddle Sideways: then it started to work into daily life
Caledonia Heron: gosh, rough business :)
Caledonia Heron: are you a teamster? ha ha
Riddle Sideways: a matter of words
Pema Pera: Hi Fael!
Caledonia Heron: hi Fael :)
Fael Illyar: Hi Pema, Cal, Sky
Pema Pera: hehe
Riddle Sideways: verbal attacks are sometimes as tough
Riddle Sideways: Hi Fael
Pema Pera: or more almost
Fael Illyar: Hi Riddle
Fael joins us, so there are no five of us.
Caledonia Heron: or more…still, that’s weird for an office environment
Riddle Sideways: no I did not mean the feirce attacks
Pema Pera: subtle sneers can be more hurtful than in your face attacs, is that what you meant?
Faenik: ah :)
Riddle Sideways: just the managers storming into office asking for schedules and why-nots
Caledonia Heron: hmmm, ok
Pema Pera: that’s when you decided to start your own business?
Riddle Sideways: pretty much :)
Riddle Sideways: no, actually that was years before
Riddle Sideways: ha, I am being currently atttacked by a kitten
Caledonia Heron: much nicer :)
Pema Pera: are you defenseless :)
Caledonia Heron: pointy little teeth
Riddle Sideways: yes, pointy claws
Faenik: ah :)
Riddle Sideways: insistant meaows… pet me
Riddle Sideways: Aikido works with teenagers to
Caledonia Heron: katma
Riddle Sideways: they are different animals every few minutes
Riddle Sideways: you never know which child will enter the room
Caledonia Heron:
Riddle Sideways: you never sure how to respond
Riddle Sideways: cal?
Caledonia Heron: looking up aikido….”concern for the well-being of the attacker”
Pema Pera: as in wikipedia :)
Pema Pera: now we got it :-)
Caledonia Heron: yes Pema….sorry text shorthand
Pema Pera: kitten does not do aikido?
Pema Pera: or does
Pema Pera: being the attacker
Riddle Sideways: yes, defensive only… use/defuse attacker energy to deflect
Riddle Sideways: ah but kitten does attack
Pema Pera: self concern
Pema Pera: concern for well being of self attacking :)
Cal and Riddle extend aikido to words, and I ask about judo.
Caledonia Heron: I like to use verbal aikido if there is such a thing :)
Riddle Sideways: yes the principles apply
Riddle Sideways: you all know of attacking words
Riddle Sideways: and surrender words
Caledonia Heron: you can redirect a lot of stuff with humor, reversals, things like that
Riddle Sideways: between the 2 are many other words forms
Riddle Sideways: yes cal,
Riddle Sideways: be practiced in humor, questioning, subject changing, etc.
Riddle Sideways: and tone of voice
Pema Pera: so that is more subtle than judo then
Riddle Sideways: which is very hard in texting
Caledonia Heron: yes, tone of voice is so powerful
Riddle Sideways: oh yes, I took judo too
Pema Pera: where in judo you turn the energy of the opponent against his/her-self
Pema Pera: but here yuo don’t even use the energy, right?
Riddle Sideways: right, or to a limited way
Pema Pera: interesting! I like to talk about avoidance, transformation, and as-is
Pema Pera: flight, judo, aikido may be a bit similar
Pema Pera: respectively
Riddle Sideways: instead of meeting a force headon or throwing it aside… it seems better to step out of the path
Sky Szimmer: what is the relationship between avoidance, transformation and as is?
Pema Pera: Sky, do you mean the relationship between those three or connection with aikido etc?
Faenik: indeed?
Sky Szimmer: guess i’m not following too well, never mind.
Pema Pera: I only mentioned very briefly, sorry
Riddle Sideways: much more transformation
I explain a bit more about the possible parellel between avoidance, transformation, and as-is, on the one hand, and flight, judo, aikido, on the other.
Pema Pera: three different kind of practice in Tibetan Buddhism, for example, but with far wider applications:
Pema Pera: renunciation, transformation, as-is
Pema Pera: you can avoid dangerous things
Pema Pera: or you can try to transform them
Riddle Sideways: yes
Pema Pera: or you can try to see them as they are
Pema Pera: does that make sense, Riddle, that parallel?
Riddle Sideways: exactly parallel
Pema Pera: Play as Being, btw, is squarely in the as-is category
Pema Pera: even more so than, say, zen — or at least as much so
Riddle Sideways: which is why I am very interested in PaB and come here
Pema Pera: and then not Buddhist
Pema Pera: very minimal
Pema Pera: not even spiritual, really
Pema Pera: Yes, I can see more and more what attracts you to PaB
Pema Pera: and what we in PaB can learn from you in return, both
Pema Pera: It’s so nice, all these different influences and ingredients
Pema Pera: Many of them Buddhist, although among the five of us, I guess we have zero Buddhists, right?
I just realized, looking around the circle, that none of us are primarily Buddhist, unlike about half of the frequent participants in PaB, an interesting fluctuation.
Riddle Sideways: and more that have not been mentioned yet
Pema Pera: :)
Caledonia Heron wants to be a spice
Pema Pera: spice girl>?
Caledonia Heron: lol, not so much :)
Pema Pera: :)
Pema Pera: spice gal
Caledonia Heron: :)
Riddle Sideways: or the added special ingrediant
Caledonia Heron: the not so secret ingredient
Pema Pera: special effects is Moon then
Sky Szimmer: hey Pema, the other day, Dakini aske what no self feels like, can you answer that?
Sky Szimmer: asked
Pema Pera: big question . . .
Caledonia Heron: lol, not to put to fine a point on it :)
Caledonia Heron: *too
Fael Illyar: :)
Pema Pera: but speaking from my own experience
Pema Pera: it feels just the same like having a self
Pema Pera: but far lighter, like a shirt instead of a skin
Pema Pera: something you wear and are not worried about too much
Pema Pera: again, have to think about the aikido parallel
Pema Pera: can go one way or another
Pema Pera: not fixed
Pema Pera: don’t care too much
Pema Pera: (and no rules ! ! ! !)
Pema Pera: :)
Caledonia Heron: :)
Back to Aikido, and suddenly we were really flying, it seemed.
Riddle Sideways: no need to parallel everything to Aikido but…
Caledonia Heron: not attached one way or the other?
Pema Pera: yes
Riddle Sideways: what if there was no you and I combating
Caledonia Heron: yes :)
Riddle Sideways: what if WE were just dancing
Pema Pera: yes!
Pema Pera: with every mistake in the dance being taken up instantly as a new variation
Pema Pera: a new pattern
Caledonia Heron: what if we are just dancing even when we think we are combating….it’s still the dance maybe
Riddle Sideways: exactly
Pema Pera: a new invention
Pema Pera: yes, Fael and I talked about not knowing that we already know, six hours ago . . . .
Riddle Sideways: variation, change, invention = life
Faenik: why not?
Pema Pera: you gotta love Faenik!
Pema Pera: our house bot
Caledonia Heron: he chimes in at opportune moments :)
Riddle Sideways: :)
Pema Pera: pavilion bot
Caledonia Heron: lol
One way to spot a fake Faenik, it seems, is that the fake one consistently starts with a space in front of the sentence, even though in SL both speak in green . . .
Faenik is a bit apprehensive, wondering whether a fake Faenik will appear again, one of these days . . . .
Faenik loves wells!
Faenik: I am not !!
Caledonia Heron: I just had this picture that Caspian was doing the jitterbug while we are doing the waltz and now the tempos come to meet each other :)
Pema Pera: nice, I like that!
Riddle Sideways: ah now you get it Cal
Caledonia Heron: coming to meet
Pema Pera: I’m getting it too — and it feels like each time when we talk it is again fresh, like getting it again :)
Pema Pera: in different ways
Riddle Sideways: just add the no self part
Pema Pera: the diversity of this group is just amazing
Caledonia Heron: a fresh flower every day
Pema Pera: Well, I have to take off
Riddle Sideways: me too
Faenik meaows ‘Faenik was AFK, sorry.’
Pema Pera: Please do keep talking if you like!
fake Faenik: np :)
Riddle Sideways: lol
Caledonia Heron: uh-oh, now Faenik has a doppelganger
Caledonia Heron: an un-doppelganger
other fake Faenik: or a tripleganger?
Caledonia Heron: googleganger
Pema Pera: great seeing you all!
Faenik: Bye Pema, Riddle, Sky, Cal.
Sky Szimmer: bye!
Caledonia Heron: yes, see you soon :)
Pema Pera: Bye Fael, Faenik, and imaginary Faeniks-wanna-bees!
Riddle Sideways: bye all
Pema Pera takes a humble bow
