That night I met Fael at the pavilion, when I arrived at the sound of the 1 am bell.
Pema Pera: Hi there, Fael!
Pema Pera: For me, the last couple times, some objects here have gotten a pink shine, or light red — like the painting on the doors behind us
Pema Pera: Did you see that too, or is it my browser or setup?
Pema Pera: The table, too, is reddish,
Pema Pera: But most of the rest looks fine
Fael Illyar: Hi Pema
Fael Illyar: Sorry, got stuck reading email and looking at the wiki and forgot this one :)
Pema Pera: :)
Faenik: なるほど^^
Fael Illyar: only 2 monitors here :)
Pema Pera: I know we are sometimes communicating on three channels simultaneously
Pema Pera: email and wiki while being here also in SL :)
Fael Illyar: yep :)
Pema Pera: Would be fun if we could set up a projector screen here in SL
Pema Pera: to show the wiki
Pema Pera: and talk about it while embedded in SL
Fael Illyar: when everyone is using 1.20 clients, we can
Pema Pera: in Qwaq these things are easy, we do it all the time there
Pema Pera: oh that reminds me
Pema Pera: people sometimes talk about updates
Faenik: ah :)
Pema Pera: I haven’t consciously updated anything about SL in several months, I believe
Fael Illyar: but the guardian group will need to have access to this parcel’s media links.
Pema Pera: do those updates happen automatically?
Pema Pera: Or do I have to do it by hand?
Pema Pera: Hi Gaya!
Fael Illyar: if you use the official client, yes, it forces you to update from time to time.
Fael Illyar: if you use a modified one, nope.
Gaya Ethaniel: hello both
Fael Illyar: Hi Gaya
Gaya dropped in, while we were still talking about SL issues.
Pema Pera: I have vanilla flavor default
Pema Pera: the last time I was forced was very long ago
Pema Pera: how often does that happen?
Fael Illyar: Whenever LL feels like forcing something down our throats :)
Pema Pera: :)
Pema Pera: Is there a command I can give to get the latest updates?
Fael Illyar: You’re probably running quite new client already. 1.20 is in beta still
Fael Illyar: look at the about option in the help menu to see your version
Pema Pera: oh, and the other thing which I typed at the start — do you see the table and painting behind you reddish too — or is that my problem?
Pema Pera: I have second life 1.19.1 (4) Apr 2 2008
Fael Illyar: no, doesn’t look reddish to me.
Pema Pera: several months old!
Fael Illyar: that’s the latest official client.
Pema Pera: k
Pema Pera: Gaya do you see the door behind me as yellow or pink?
Gaya Ethaniel: you mean the pine tree screen?
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: the background color in the painting
Gaya Ethaniel: no as it should be yellowish and green etc
Gaya Ethaniel: background in yellow beige
Pema Pera: I remember it being that way,
Pema Pera: but the last time and this time too it is all covered with a red hue
Pema Pera: I wonder how I can “reset” my colors!
Gaya Ethaniel: how odd…
Pema Pera: The strange thing is that most other objets look fine.
Pema Pera: hmmm
Gaya Ethaniel: why not try the dedicated Linden help team? :)
Pema Pera: yes, that’s an option :)
Gaya Ethaniel: takes days sometime when i was ghosted
Pema Pera: could they help you, Gaya?
Fael Illyar: I haven’t see an effect like that … although …
Gaya Ethaniel: yes they did
Fael Illyar: it’s not the ctrl-alt-t effect is it?
Pema Pera: ah, yes, I was just thinking, I should try this rebake
Pema Pera: whatever it was
Fael Illyar: rebake only affects your avatar.
Pema Pera: ah, okay
Pema Pera wants to rebake the whole world!
Gaya Ethaniel: is absorbing all these SL tech term - rebake
Fael Illyar: there are some options that activate some information displays in the Advanced -> Rendering menu
Faenik is a hairy black ball with eyes and ears.
Pema Pera: yes, I was just looking at those
Fael Illyar: some of them could perhaps do something like you’re describing
Pema Pera: but nothing seemed obvious there
Gaya Ethaniel: it won’t hurt a sending a ticket to the help Pema - nothing to lose
Pema Pera: time :)
Gaya Ethaniel: true
Pema Pera: but I tend to get a quick response
Pema Pera: being a landlord
Pema Pera: in the name of the Play as Being group
Pema Pera: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: feels suddenly poor :)
Gaya Ethaniel: sending basic account customer queries
We switched to guardian plots on the PaB land.
Pema Pera: did you get your own lot yet, Gaya
Gaya Ethaniel: lol
Pema Pera: on the PaB land?
Gaya Ethaniel: you mean G plot?
Pema Pera: yes?
Gaya Ethaniel: not yet thinking about it…
Pema Pera: whenever you like!
Gaya Ethaniel: i want to have time to learn building stuff before claiming the land
Pema Pera: yes, that’s fine
Pema Pera: We have a large sandbox
Pema Pera: you can use that to play with building — and many people here can help you
Gaya Ethaniel: don’t want to have an empty spot reserved
Gaya Ethaniel: yes.. i actually need to pipe down my activities in SL soon so need to be selective what I’d be doing here
Pema Pera: oh, but we do have standard huts — three types you can choose from. You could put one of those down and then later replace it with your own build if you like
Gaya Ethaniel: my first priority is to meet people and explore mtgs
Pema Pera: Yes, I know!
Pema Pera: SL can be a real time sink :)
Fael Illyar: mtgs?
Pema Pera: meetings
Gaya Ethaniel: i know though i want to build something Korean so this will just have to wait until my spiritual by-pass is done
Pema Pera: Ah, someone told me that our Hall of Appearance has some Korean elements
Pema Pera: Is that true?
Gaya Ethaniel: yes possibly the crane painting but then it could be said as Chinese
Faenik: ah :)
Pema Pera: I mean the building where we have our guardian meetings, especially the entrance to the court yard, from this side
Gaya Ethaniel: one sec
Gaya walked off to the Hall, nearby, to have a look, and returned soon afterwards.
Faenik: indeed?
Fael Illyar: apparently email addresses for usernames was a bad idea.
Pema Pera: I’ve seen that done before, though
Pema Pera: I guess I’m just lucky with a good support staff and a great spam filter, at my work place
Pema Pera: Did you see the hall, Gaya?
Fael Illyar: I’ve also got a good spam filter … well, I put that up myself.
Gaya Ethaniel: yes though i can’t see anything particularly korean (could be due to my lack of knowledge), courtyard is also an unusual feature in korean architecture as far as i know
Faenik is a hairy black ball with eyes and ears.
Pema Pera: It was a Japanese architect, a friend of mine, who looked over my shoulder, and commented on the entry way
Pema Pera: I think perhaps the circular structures there
Gaya Ethaniel: i see maybe he was referring to pre-Joseon period which I’m unfamiliar
Gaya Ethaniel: btw
Gaya Ethaniel: i’ve heard about a free clock software i can use for 15 minutes gong
Gaya Ethaniel: i’ve been sitting by teahut and use the bell there but sometimes swamped with people…
Gaya Ethaniel: do you know any?
Fael Illyar: http://www.mindfulnessdc.org/mindfulclock.html
Gaya Ethaniel: cool that’s the one…
Gaya Ethaniel: thanks Fael:
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Faenik: ah :)
Pema Pera: Gaya, if I may ask, how did you first hear about Play as Being?
Gaya Ethaniel: well i probably am repeating myself…
Gaya talked about how she first came to PaB, a story I hadn’t heard yet.
Gaya Ethaniel: i came to SL about a month ago
Gaya Ethaniel: visited a few places weried and maybe wonderful
Faenik: なるほど^^
Gaya Ethaniel: one day searched for buddhist in search window and visited all
Gaya Ethaniel: and found the place by the teahut
Gaya Ethaniel: to sit down and get on with my work in RL
Fael Illyar: Ah, then you discovered the teleports?
Gaya Ethaniel: yes i saw the stone and it said teleport to ‘Play as Being’
Pema Pera: sounds like a fairy tale!
Gaya Ethaniel: first thought was ah this is another place for a dodgy role playing
Gaya Ethaniel: sorry babbling on
Pema Pera: hahaha
Pema Pera: oh no, I like to hear this story
Pema Pera: often I have no idea how people find us
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Pema Pera thinking: play as cats, play as furries, play as Being
Gaya Ethaniel: while i’ve sat by the teahut for about 2 weeks I’ve never seen anyone around except green dots in the pavillion - i know why because most from US etc
Gaya Ethaniel: i don’t know why i thought it a bad place immediately but then it must be to do with places I first visited
Gaya Ethaniel: so one day i said to myself ‘what the h***’ let’s go and find out
Pema Pera: :>)
Gaya Ethaniel: and joined the group - very fortunate that they endured my babbling on with no clue whatsoever
Gaya Ethaniel: i read the website but missed Hints page alas!
Pema Pera: Wonderful story, Gaya; perhaps we should collect stories from everyone how they first came here!
Fael Illyar: Of course, you could also wonder why there’d be teleporters in a place called Zen Retreat to dodgy stuff :P
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: Storm thought that play can be a misleading word
Gaya Ethaniel: misrepresenting what we do here
Pema Pera: :-)
Gaya Ethaniel: well i found out after a week of exploring - one square can contain different sort of places
Pema Pera: one sim, yes, very much so!
Gaya Ethaniel: mature doesn’t always mean ‘mature’ - stiff learning curve SL is
Pema Pera: indeed!
We talked about ways to explore places in Second Life.
Gaya Ethaniel: i went to a place called ‘forest sangha’ with joy that this might be the group that i follow
Gaya Ethaniel: something else was going on there…. over the hill they warned me
Pema Pera: SL has a very wide spectrum of activities — and of interpretations of words to describe those activities!
Fael Illyar: I guess I’ve avoided that sort by mostly just exploring places recommended by people I’ve met.
Pema Pera: oh, but it’s fun to explore!
Faenik: indeed?
Gaya Ethaniel: yes but i only wanted to meet certain people… limiting myself i guess
Gaya Ethaniel: it’s like why bother doing certain activities in SL as it’s better in RL
Pema Pera: When I was new to SL I would often zoom out on the map until there was no information visible anymore and pick a random spot and tp there — was very informative, to get a cross section of acivities
Gaya Ethaniel: lost interests dancing pretty quickly
Pema Pera: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: yeah i did that a lot
Pema Pera: for learning and practicing languages it is great though
Gaya Ethaniel: i wondered a lot what people get out of doing those activities in SL…
Pema Pera: not so important what you do, as long as you can talk
Gaya Ethaniel: yes my English will improve vastly over the coming months thanks to PaB
Pema Pera: what people get out of SL is probably still more interesting than just watching TV . …
Gaya Ethaniel: that’s true people dancing were there to chat in fact
Gaya Ethaniel: i almost gave up thinking this is a giant chat room
A bit later we would come back to the notion of chat room.
Pema Pera: yes that seems to be the main mode
Pema Pera: like a neighborhood cafe
Fael Illyar: ah yes, random spot teleporting :)
Pema Pera: a tradition of thousands of years . . . .
Fael Illyar: reminds me I still haven’t tried it.
Pema Pera: hahaha
Gaya Ethaniel: must have done something good that i decided to come here :)
Pema Pera: the way our lines interpose is funny
Gaya Ethaniel: in the past
Fael Illyar: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: tradition of thousands of years? what is?
Pema Pera: neighborhood cafe
Pema Pera: not teleporting
Pema Pera: hehe
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Fael Illyar: … you know, this _is_ a giant chatroom
Pema Pera: with quite a few extras though
Gaya Ethaniel: sorry i mean chatrooms looking for cyber romance
Pema Pera: ah, yes, that is happening too a lot here
Fael Illyar: well, it mostly is that too :)
Gaya Ethaniel: thought it’s just that - that’s it until i came here
Gaya Ethaniel: met you guys
Gaya Ethaniel: what encouraged me was the sheer number of buddhists groups
Pema Pera: glad we can provide something more varied :)
Gaya Ethaniel: an indication that it’s not it
Gaya Ethaniel: thanks :)
Fael Illyar: strangely, I haven’t had people try to pick me up.
Pema Pera: ah you must be too serious!
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Pema Pera: or Faenik scares them
Gaya Ethaniel: lol
Fael Illyar: even before Faenik :)
Gaya Ethaniel: at all other places you’ve been?
Fael Illyar: Yes
Pema Pera: that’s pretty amazing
Pema Pera: SL karma?
Gaya Ethaniel: yeah…
Fael Illyar: perhaps
Pema Pera: Well, I have to go now
Pema Pera: fun talking with you both!
Fael Illyar: Ok, see you later Pema :)
Pema Pera: as always
Gaya Ethaniel: good to talk to you
Gaya Ethaniel: good day
Pema Pera: you too, ah, both in Europe!
Pema Pera: here evening
Pema Pera: dinner time
Gaya Ethaniel: good night
Gaya Ethaniel: then
Pema Pera: good day for you both!
Useful link to the mindfulness timer. Thank you Fael!
You're welcome :)
