Wol Euler was guardian for this session, which began while I was making coffee.

    Alfred Kelberry: woly! :)
    Alfred Kelberry: meep!
    Alfred Kelberry: *sniffs woly* :)
    Alfred Kelberry: wuff :P
Alfred Kelberry: she must be watching the earthquake coverage
    eggsalad Ormstein: hi gang

    --BELL--

    Alfred Kelberry: hi egg :)
    eggsalad Ormstein: hi al
    Alfred Kelberry: wuff :)
Alfred Kelberry: woly is up :)
    eggsalad Ormstein: up?
    Alfred Kelberry: or not...
    Alfred Kelberry: she's been away
    eggsalad Ormstein: ahhh
Wol Euler: good morning, egg, boxy
    eggsalad Ormstein: mornin, wol
Wol Euler: I hope you're both happy and well today?
eggsalad Ormstein: sure, life is good!
    Wol Euler smiles.
    Alfred Kelberry: woly :)
Alfred Kelberry: how are you this morning, woly?
    Wol Euler: calm, so far.
Wol Euler: I think it's going to be a stressful day, but I'm not going to stress about stressing :)
eggsalad Ormstein: stress has no value. I don't see why people do it
    Alfred Kelberry: wise, woly :)
Wol Euler: perhaps because they can't help themselves, egg?
eggsalad Ormstein: it's quite possible to control it, many people never bother to learn how
Alfred Kelberry: it's good to kick or throw something when you're stressed. somehow it helps :)
eggsalad Ormstein: or just not get stressed in the 1st place
Wol Euler: a fine theory :)
Wol Euler: the trouble is that humans are bad at applying theories to their own lives
Wol Euler: else there would be no addictions
Alfred Kelberry: it's cause pesky other humans interfere :)
Wol Euler: well, that doesn't help :)
Wol Euler: like the social rituals that surround smoking, other smokers seem to conspire to prevent people quitting
    Alfred Kelberry: hmm
Wol Euler: "here, have one of mine"
    eggsalad Ormstein: big earthquake again
Alfred Kelberry: i guess they're afraid to be left alone at a smoke corner
Wol Euler: I was just reading that, yes.
Wol Euler: there's fear of a tsunami again
    Alfred Kelberry: aftershock

    --BELL--

Alfred Kelberry: it's funny how birds can feel an incoming earthquake before it rattles
Alfred Kelberry: guess they had more time to develop such senses than humans
    Wol Euler: hmmmmmm
Wol Euler: perhaps their sensorium is just different from ours
Wol Euler: the tsunami wave is said to be higher than the maximum elevation of some Pacific islands.
eggsalad Ormstein: well, many islands are lower than 10m, yes
    Alfred Kelberry: poor indigenous population
    Wol Euler nods.
Alfred Kelberry: a lot would be swept, i guess
    Wol Euler nods sadly.

    --BELL--

Alfred Kelberry: notice how journalists at times like this are hunger for more damage and disaster to report
Alfred Kelberry: "this still can cause a lot of damage, right? right?"
Wol Euler: that's not just sensationalism, I think: they are warning people that it won't be over in five minutes
Wol Euler: there may be aftershocks, there *will* be following waves
Wol Euler: the BBC is re-streaming (in English) the Japanese emergency service broadcast
Wol Euler: telling people that it isn't over yet, don't relax, don't go home
    Alfred Kelberry: url?
    Wol Euler: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698
    Alfred Kelberry: danke :)
    Alfred Kelberry: prime minister speech
    Alfred Kelberry: woly's typing
Wol Euler: I'm not going to try to contact Pema or Kiremimi, she's far enough south of hte quake that she might not have felt it, even.
Wol Euler: if she did, she will have called him
Alfred Kelberry: ah, good to know
Wol Euler: I'll email them both though
eggsalad Ormstein: the entire country felt *something* quite a bit of damage even in Tokyo
    Wol Euler nods
Alfred Kelberry: i've been wondering how our kira japan members are doing
Alfred Kelberry: pema is in the u.s., no?
    Wol Euler: yes, at princeton
eggsalad Ormstein: the NHK TV website is too overloaded to load
eggsalad Ormstein: ah, now it loaded
eggsalad Ormstein: if you have quicktime, see live english-language broadcast
    eggsalad Ormstein: http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: "futures falling on the Kobe stock exchange" commmentator says it makes sense? Surely not, surely resources will be scarce and more in demand in the near future, given that production will fall.
Alfred Kelberry: woly the trader :)
    Wol Euler: woly the worried
Alfred Kelberry: *buys some woly's futures* :)
eggsalad Ormstein: time to stock up on toyota parts
Wol Euler: and rice, and oranges ...
    Alfred Kelberry: and pokemons
eggsalad Ormstein: ah, the commodities market
    Alfred Kelberry: *pats woly's back*
Wol Euler trembles as she watches

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: Hana just posted on Facebook that she is OK (in Kyoto, near Kiremimi). Didn't say whether she'd felt it or how strong it was
Alfred Kelberry: good... any word from almond or panda-san?

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: not that I know, I'm not in contact with them
Wol Euler: well, I'm going to have to go to work, earthquake or not. I hope everyone is OK
    eggsalad Ormstein: bye wol!
Wol Euler: I'll leave the log running, feel free to stay here and keep commenting.
eggsalad Ormstein: nah, bedtime here, too
Wol Euler: we'll have a live-ish record in the log
    Wol Euler: goodnight, egg.
Wol Euler: bye alf, catch you later
