Pema Pera: though it must have been more than two years ago that we moved here

Pema Pera: but of course we are concerned about our friends and family in Japan
Pema Pera: her mother is fine, and as far as we know, our friends are, but it's really a terrible situation
Pema Pera: one visitor of mine, at my work, grew up in the area affected
Pema Pera: and has many friends there
Pema Pera: a village near where he grow up is no longer there

Eliza Madrigal: though in a sense there is a sense of everyone's home at times like this
Pema Pera: it is such an overwhelming disaster, there is just now way they can assist everybody at the same time
Pema Pera: though they have been very good at getting people rescued from roofs by helicopters

Pema Pera: even the aftershocks, every few hours, are large enough to have made headlines, one by one, if they occurred in isolation, but now they are almost ignored in comparison

Pema Pera: now there are several an hour, and larger
Pema Pera: it may take months for the Earth to settle again around Japan . . .

Bertrum Resident: We have seen that preparation --building codes etc-- can save lives. But nothing can stop the water...

Pema Pera: yes, that's what did the nuclear power plants in -- their backup systems were destroyed by the tsunami

Pema Pera: I saw an eerily cute picture of a small child being monitored for radiation overdose by two grownup in space suit like costumes . . . .
