Solobill Laville: We can become beguiled by the 'thing' we think it is, or what we want to think about. Then we lose the reason why we were thinking about time in the first place.

Alfred Kelberry: solo, you reminded me... i like the notion of oneself to reappear as new each time frame. so, stev would think about time differently a second ago than now :)
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, there is time, then there is the "moment", each unique
Alfred Kelberry: each frame is either a renewal of self or branching :)
Solobill Laville: except that there are all sorts of attachments between the 'frames' so to speak...
Alfred Kelberry: yes, and they also renew... our senses of them
Alfred Kelberry: fluctuating

Solobill Laville: yes, but I think there are two primary views therein. One is through thought, one is through experiencing. The latter leads to appreciation, which is a key component I think.

Solobill Laville: I'm not a big fan of 'thinking' about time.

Solobill Laville: no. though you can think later about experience.
Solobill Laville: It's the difference about thinking about experience while you experience it, versus being 'in' the experience itself, if that makes any sense.

Solobill Laville: What is your personal experience with meditation, Alex, was/is it a rewarding journey?

Solobill Laville: Yes, and there are *many* different takes on it
Solobill Laville: I practice Zazen - primarily concentration meditation
Alfred Kelberry: solo, that's what i like about it... there's no rigid rules or expected behavior
Alexis Sommerfeld: My own experiences with meditation has been with insight meditation, practiced in the zazen technique.
Solobill Laville: Yes, depends on what you *sign up* for though, each school or temple has its preference and expertise
Alfred Kelberry: same here (zazen). i specifically like zen for its practicality.
Alexis Sommerfeld: they all rely on the same precepts, the same wisdom
Alexis Sommerfeld: no matter the local dialect, all schools of Buddhism point to the wisdom of the Buddha

Alfred Kelberry: solo, yes, and there are *many* to choose from :)

Alexis Sommerfeld: so that you can be "mindful" of your actions.
Alexis Sommerfeld: you train this by first becoming specifically aware of something as simple as your breathing

Alexis Sommerfeld: let's go through a simple meditation exercise.

Alexis Sommerfeld: imagine that you have to monitor your breathing, and be aware of each inhalation, and each exhalation.
Alfred Kelberry: solo :)
Alexis Sommerfeld: but
Alexis Sommerfeld: you can't actually force or control your breathing
Alexis Sommerfeld: it's not as easy as it seems
Alexis Sommerfeld: you have to breath naturally, while observing yourself breathing naturally
stevenaia Michinaga: breath can be a wonderful timekeeper of actions and thoughts
Alfred Kelberry: i don't think of easy or hard when i meditate. i just... let it happen.
Solobill Laville: Focusing on the breath is a bridge, or a ladder, scaffold, to rein in our thoughts
Solobill Laville: And also an organic way to remind us we are in a body, and not all disembodied thought-stuff :)
Alexis Sommerfeld: but that's the basics of meditation, the beginning of a long journey of self discovery.
Alexis Sommerfeld: understanding your reality starts this way
Alexis Sommerfeld: understanding what you are really doing, and not what you think that you are doing.
Alexis Sommerfeld: there are so many distortions, by ego, prejudice, preconception, that fog our view of reality
Alexis Sommerfeld: meditation makes us focus and understand precisely what we are doing
Alexis Sommerfeld: we start with the breath, and from those skills continue our awareness

Alexis Sommerfeld: wow I never really thought of myself as a teacher, I'm glad to share what little knowledge I have.

Alexis Sommerfeld: Time...time is an illusion. Lunchtime, doubly so.
Alfred Kelberry: i hope one day we can befriend with time and live longer :)

Alexis Sommerfeld: And convince it to not continually tear down my body until it stops functioning altogether.

Solobill Laville: That last point is part of the trick for me, the mystery
Solobill Laville: the continually tearing down, I mean, body, mountains, whatever...

Solobill Laville: Hmmm...I like the balance yin/yang perspective of that, but I'm not sure
Alexis Sommerfeld: that's a good point, stevenaia, what's also a good point is that we as humans are incapable of understanding how time actually works, all we have is the illusion of how time seems to work in our minds.

stevenaia Michinaga: all we can do it "watch it" by measurements, we cannot change it, jsut feel it change
