    Return of the light

    Zen Arado: Hi Freud :)
    Eden Haiku: Hi Freud:)
    Freud Jungsten: Heya
    Archmage Atlantis: Hello Freud :)
Freud Jungsten: Good to see you today.
Zen Arado: good to see you too
Zen Arado: I got in trouble this morning for criticizing Christmas :)
Zen Arado: have to keep my mouth shut for a while
Eden Haiku: You did ? Tell us Zen...
Freud Jungsten: It is a tradition that has been far separated from it's original intent.
Eden Haiku: How can you get in trouble for speaking up (hehe) ?
Zen Arado: one of my little old lady friends
    Eden Haiku: yes?
Zen Arado: who is a Christian and LOVES Christmas
Zen Arado: and wishes her dear departed husband was still here to celebrate it with
Zen Arado: not like grumpy old me :)
Archmage Atlantis: Well, if one actually knows how Christmas came to be celebrated, it doesn't have any place in the very earliest church
Eden Haiku: You resist all the cuteness of Christmas I guess... Christmas is like the antithesis of zen?
Zen Arado: they don't want to know that though Arch
Archmage Atlantis: When Constantine converted, and forced the Roman Empire to convert, the pagan winter festival became Christmas
Archmage Atlantis: I know Zen, I well know
Zen Arado: maybe ..but it's just me
Eden Haiku: The deep meaning is to welcome the return of the light isn't it?
Zen Arado: I didn't even like it when I was a Christian
Zen Arado: I do try to accept it...
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, going back to shamanism, the winter solstice is the mark
Freud Jungsten: In that part of the Christendom, not accross the entire Church though.
Zen Arado: yes - there would be a winter feast anyway even without Christianity
Freud Jungsten: I tend to celebrate it in the January frame.

    Thanksgiving and weather reports

    Wol Euler: konnichi wa!
    Eden Haiku: hello Wol!
    Zen Arado: Hi Wol :)
    Freud Jungsten: osiyo
Archmage Atlantis: The nice thing about yesterday
Archmage Atlantis: is that Thanksgiving is celebrated by everyone in the US
    Archmage Atlantis: regardless of background
    Archmage Atlantis: Hello Wol
Eden Haiku: Yes, that seems to be a time for reunion for everyone, that's nice :)
Freud Jungsten: THer are some in my ethnic line that don't celebrate it.... but I think they are being a bit short sighted.
Zen Arado: there is no religious significance to it?
Zen Arado: to thanks giving I mean?
Freud Jungsten: Not as a direct tie I don't think.
Archmage Atlantis: As I was saying that, I was thinking of you Freud......if there is any group that might not, it would be native americans
Freud Jungsten: More just are a reason to reflect.

    --BELL--

Archmage Atlantis: No religious significance........a harvest festival
Eden Haiku: We had an icestorm here this morning. Now the sun is shining :)
Zen Arado: it is snowing in the UK
Zen Arado: and more forecast at weekend
Archmage Atlantis: Burrrr......I'm glad there is no ice and snow here, I had enough of that earlier in this life
Eden Haiku: Wow! and how is the weather in Kyoto Wol?
Eden Haiku: Where did you live before Florida Arch?
Wol Euler: cool to cold, 12/15°C
    Wol Euler: but mostly sunny
    Zen Arado: not bad :)
Eden Haiku: We had sunny days all through November and mild temperatures too. We even ate lunch outside late in the season, like a week ago...
Archmage Atlantis: I started in FL....but but was in PA and NJ for a few years.......and yes I know, there are places a lot colder
Freud Jungsten: I love Florida... want to move back.

Climate change and "fashions in fears"

Eden Haiku: Are you worried about the climate change?
Archmage Atlantis: If I remember what I've read, Kyoto has some nice gardens
    Archmage Atlantis: No, Eden
Archmage Atlantis: I was, but it is affecting everyone
Freud Jungsten: Well, as the globe is cooling off, I hate it... lol
Archmage Atlantis: I don't think there is anywhere that is guaranteed "safe"
Archmage Atlantis: Climate change has always been ........ just no human contribution before
Freud Jungsten: I am still not convinced.... way too much money behind pushing the idea... and the science has been politicized so bad on both sides it is very dificult to get around the noise.
Eden Haiku: Back in 1998, we had a huge icestorm that last many days up here. No more electricity for at least a month for many people, a few days for most of us. In January. We see the climate change in the news everywhere, but that is when I started taking it seriously.
Zen Arado: yes - will wait and see
Zen Arado: cause and effect difficult to pin down in weather
    Wol Euler: boxboy.
    Zen Arado: :)
Archmage Atlantis: Well the only issue is what effect humans are having
Eden Haiku: It is but I'm sure having so many cars is not the way to go...
Freud Jungsten: I think the worst part about the whole thing is that it is a big IF.... and while we fret on an if.. there are things that we could be doing on concrete environmental problems.
Archmage Atlantis: And there isn't a definite answer to that at all
    Wol Euler nods.
    Freud Jungsten: Agree with that.
    Zen Arado: yes
    Archmage Atlantis: Yes
Wol Euler: might we agree that pollution is a bad thing, whether or not it causes global warning?
    Freud Jungsten: Agreed.
    Eden Haiku: Exactly.
    Alfred Kelberry: woly :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Yes
Zen Arado: but reducing CO2 output seems sensible
    Alfred Kelberry: hello :)
    Zen Arado: Hi Alf :)
Wol Euler: and might we therefore decide to reduce it, whether or not global warning exists?
    Eden Haiku: Hello Alfred :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Hey there, Alfie
Freud Jungsten: The problem with that model is that it is not proven AND it impacts the poorest the most.
    Alfred Kelberry: talking ecology?
Wol Euler: ah, so we must continue to pollute! now I understand.
Eden Haiku: Climate change yes, Alf ;)
Freud Jungsten: While Al Gore swims in his two heated swimming pools, reducing carbon will drive the poor to even worse conditions.
    Eden Haiku: And pollution ...
Zen Arado: they don't say much about acid rain any more
Eden Haiku: Yes, acid rain... what ever happened to acid rain ?
Zen Arado: it was supposedly destroying the Black Forest in Germany
    Wol Euler: it is.
    Wol Euler: but it's unfashionable
    Wol Euler: (to talk about)
Archmage Atlantis: It was reduced by changes in production methods, but it still exists
Alfred Kelberry: i've seen how garbage people went on strike in some town (i think in england) - the streets do look quite polluted now :)
Zen Arado: yeah - CO2 is in !
Wol Euler: there are fashions in fear, just as in clothing
Freud Jungsten: How does acid rain hurt the forest?
Wol Euler: acid is acidic :)
Wol Euler: it kills the trees
Eden Haiku: Yes, fashions in fears, that's quite right Wol :)
Zen Arado: it eats into buildings too
Freud Jungsten: Does it hurt the leaves or roots or what?
Wol Euler: yes, they take it in and die from the top down
Eden Haiku: Remember the bug of 2000?
    Alfred Kelberry: what about it?
Archmage Atlantis: Most plants prefer a certain acidity or alkalinity, and are adapted to that
Freud Jungsten: Oh... Ok.. did not know that.
Eden Haiku: Nothing Alf. All the fun was in the fear before...

    --BELL--

    Curious about Japan

Alfred Kelberry: *observes eden's beautiful sweater*
Alfred Kelberry: *looks at woly and thinks "wow"*
    Wol Euler smiles.
Eden Haiku: noticed you were coming closer Alf :)
Alfred Kelberry: that's a nice feathery outfit :)
    Alfred Kelberry: eden :)
Freud Jungsten: Thanks for that wiki article.
    Wol Euler: fan dancer :)
Eden Haiku: Wol is always very elegant and sexy!
    Alfred Kelberry: yes, she is
    Wol Euler: ty
    Freud Jungsten: Very nice.
Eden Haiku: Yes, thanks for the link Zen :)
Freud Jungsten: Not an outfit I could get away with.... frowns.
Zen Arado: when I worked in power stations they worried about it
    Freud Jungsten smiles
Wol Euler: my favourite store moved, but I missed the notice. I thought they'd closed, when I found out they were still open I bought three outfits to celebrate
Alfred Kelberry: have you seen geishas, woly? :)
    Eden Haiku: Eshi store?
Wol Euler: yes, they are around, but rather rare
    Wol Euler: no, vitabela dubrovna
Wol Euler: very similar to eshi though
Eden Haiku: The typing effect of your feathers is amazing Wol!
Wol Euler: women wearing kimonos are more common, but also a tiny minority
Wol Euler: most japanese just look like normal people
    Alfred Kelberry: amazing :)
    Wol Euler grins.
Archmage Atlantis: I wonder if sims designed by persons from cultures requiring less interpersonal space would have the cushions closer together?,.....just a random thought
    Eden Haiku: Interesting Arch...
Wol Euler: japanese stores are noticeably smaller than american in SL and RL, yes
Alfred Kelberry: you just broke the mysterious japanese image :)
    Wol Euler: sorry :)
Zen Arado: more like necessity then requiring ?
Alfred Kelberry: i think cushions are well placed
Zen Arado: it's a crowded place
Wol Euler: it's a fairly thick and flexible line
Eden Haiku: In India, it is amazing to see that most women are still wearing saris and punjabis. It is so beautiful!
    Wol Euler: yes, definitely crowded!
Wol Euler: the buses are incredible
Freud Jungsten: I think I know what a kimono is.... but what is their significance?
Zen Arado: they push you onto trains ?
Wol Euler: when you think it's full to bursting, another 30 people get on, then 10 more
    Zen Arado: pack them in
Wol Euler: that exists in tokyo and perhaps the main stations of kyoto (where I am)
    Eden Haiku: With white gloves?
Wol Euler: never seen it though
Wol Euler: many people wear gloves, cops for example
Wol Euler: many serving people in shops
    Wol Euler: though not restaurants
Eden Haiku: heard the toilets are pretty wild too ?
Alfred Kelberry: woly wears gloves too
    Wol Euler grins.
Archmage Atlantis: I suppose that will be the market for the new semi-standing airplane seats......another way to pack more ppl in
Wol Euler: heated seats, and ... um ... cleansing options
Alfred Kelberry: do you bow a lot? :)
Eden Haiku: Being pushed into airplanes after being body scanned. Travels will be a breeze!
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Archmage Atlantis: Different jets of water, right Wol?
    Wol Euler: and air
Wol Euler: some flush themselves too
    Zen Arado: sonds hygienic
Wol Euler: well, there is a reason for it: you don't necessarily wash your hands after
Wol Euler: and even if there is a sink, there often isn't soap
Alfred Kelberry: thanks to zen, i have a new meaning of "body scan" :)
Wol Euler: not that it ran out, just isn't provided
Eden Haiku: And music also? To camoulage...
    Wol Euler: conceptual cleanliness
    Alfred Kelberry: no soap?
    Wol Euler: yep
    Wol Euler: often
Wol Euler: you rinse your hands only
    Alfred Kelberry: i like soap
Wol Euler: so the streams of water (and air) are to save you dirtying your hands
Wol Euler: a rational solution to a strange kind of self-imposed problem
    Alfred Kelberry: hmm
Eden Haiku: Japanese are reknowned for their baths and spas too. Did you have a chance to try that Wol?
    Wol Euler: not yet
Alfred Kelberry: don't wet your feathers :)
    Eden Haiku: hehe
Wol Euler: in this bed & breakfast there is a kind of plunge bath thing next to the shower
Archmage Atlantis: I'd be concerned about ceiling height and bed length.......I already have issues with both some places here in the US
Wol Euler: nearly a metre deep!
Wol Euler: must take over a thousand litres of water to fill
Alfred Kelberry: which is being recycled i think
Wol Euler: bed is long enough but every door everywhere is too low
Wol Euler: I crack my head a dozen times a day
    Alfred Kelberry: hehe
    Archmage Atlantis: :)
Eden Haiku: Oh yes Arch, if you are very tall it must be a source of trouble in Japan. Especially in these hotels where the room is just the size of your body. Can't remember how they are called...
Alfred Kelberry: that's for growing too tall
    Wol Euler: :-P
Eden Haiku: hehe says the tiny box...
Wol Euler: taking off and putting on shoes is a chore.
    Alfred Kelberry: how so?
Wol Euler: there's never anywhere to sit! the entire nation wears slipons
Zen Arado: yes - like zen sesshins

    --BELL--

    Zen Arado: leave shoes outside
Archmage Atlantis: Or the Dutch......my friends of Dutch ancestry are far more likely to remove their shoes at the door here, even tho it's not common custom
Eden Haiku: Ah yes...in India, I burnt my feet on hot stone in temples...and had my shoes stolen a few times :(
    Alfred Kelberry: eden :)
Eden Haiku: But it is nice not bringing outside dirt into the house...
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: conceptual cleanliness again: outside is filthy, even though the streets are swept cleaner than in Germany
Alfred Kelberry: woly, you mean specifically temples (re shoes)?
Wol Euler: houses too, and some restaurants
Eden Haiku: And how is the food?
    Wol Euler: excellent! delicious
Alfred Kelberry: you don't take off your shoes at home?
    Wol Euler: expensive
Wol Euler: well, yes, but only because I always change out of my work clothes
    Alfred Kelberry: hmm, ok :)
Wol Euler: the point is: my shoes have laces. I tie and untie them a half-dozen times a day
Wol Euler: I'll have to buy slipons
Archmage Atlantis: If that was addressed to me, Al, then no.....guests would wear their shoes inside.......there are rough mats by the door to wipe ones shoes on
Eden Haiku: They will be happy to see you at work in slipons back in Germany :)
    Archmage Atlantis: *chuckle*
Eden Haiku: Maybe you will start a new trend. Architects in slipons all over Germany!
    Wol Euler smiles.
    Archmage Atlantis: :)
    Alfred Kelberry: and in feathers
    Alfred Kelberry: i like them
    Wol Euler grins.
    Eden Haiku: And in feathers:)
    Zen Arado: feathers ist verbiten
    Eden Haiku: verboten?
    Zen Arado: verboten*
    Wol Euler: verboten
Alfred Kelberry: ich bin ein berliner
Archmage Atlantis: omg, German architects.......oh look, I know what that person does for a living, check out the feathers :)
Wol Euler: and since they are plural it should be "sind verboten"
Eden Haiku: Das ist eine tragedy aber ich spreche nicht Deutsch
Zen Arado: ok my German almost non existent
    Wol Euler: :)
Alfred Kelberry: *sees aph on the map*
Alfred Kelberry: poor thing, still trapped
    Wol Euler nods.
Zen Arado: has a solitary vigil
    Zen Arado: guarding Kira
Alfred Kelberry: storm put up a restart request yesterday
Alfred Kelberry: zen :) ghost of kira
    Wol Euler: good
Alfred Kelberry: he said she's coming here with her alt, though i don't know the name
Wol Euler: it's in the photo
Eden Haiku: Blissful is her alt's name.
    Wol Euler: right
    Alfred Kelberry: damn!
    Archmage Atlantis: starts with B
Alfred Kelberry: i thought it was her friend
Alfred Kelberry: ok, good to know :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Right, Blissful
    Zen Arado: gtg
Eden Haiku: Sayonara to you all. Have a great week end!
    Zen Arado: bye all
    Zen Arado: you too
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, it is time, bye everyone
Alfred Kelberry: in the recent v2 version you can set a name tag
    Alfred Kelberry: once a week
    Freud Jungsten: Ciao
    Wol Euler: bye eden
Archmage Atlantis: Have a great time period
    Wol Euler: bye zen
    Alfred Kelberry: bye, archy
    Wol Euler: bye everyone
Wol Euler: I should go too before I fall asleep at the desk.
    Wol Euler: goodnight, take care.
    Alfred Kelberry: hehe
    Alfred Kelberry: ok, sleep well
