[12:13] Storm Nordwind: One or two have different personalities. But they're integrated with me. The point of the different avatars for me is more different functionality within SL

[12:14] Storm Nordwind: Within different communities, different avatars are more suitable. The name of the avatar is more important than the "look" - it's more useful to keep these separate

[12:15] Av: that's interesting .... the name is more important in many ways.... others find that as well?

[12:16] Storm Nordwind: May I quote from a paper that I wrote for a university in September?

[12:16] Storm Nordwind: An avatar’s presence in a particular region of Second Life is often automatically recorded. Rightly or wrongly, these data have sometimes been published on the internet without an avatar’s permission. Thus you do not have to accompany an avatar to know some of the places that they have visited and, by implication, some of the activities they may have been involved in.

[12:16] Storm Nordwind: Avatars may acquire and maintain reputations in certain circles. For example, a professor’s avatar (and its name) may become well known in scientific circles, an actor’s avatar may become well known in thespian circles, and a pimp’s avatar may become well known in certain clubs. It may well be that the owners of those avatars have no problem integrating the various parts of their personality into their real life psyche. They may find, however, that some other people do not share that ability, either when looking at themselves or when associating with others of multiple interests and abilities.

[12:17] Storm Nordwind: One’s effectiveness in some circles may be dependent, in part whole or in part, on one’s reputation. The building of a reputation, good or bad, is not necessarily the result of a fair and balanced exercise by other people. Therefore, unless you’re pioneering greater diversity of social acceptance, it is often more pragmatic not to “rock the boat”.

[12:17] Storm Nordwind: A good way to throw yourself on the mercy and wit of other people in Second Life is to use the same avatar for what some might see as disparate and even discordant activities. The results of this touching act of faith are unpredictable at best, and may be damaging at worst. By contrast, one way to preserve and build reputation, when you have a multiplicity of possible incongruent interests and activities in Second Life, is to create a separate avatar for each one.

[12:17] Storm Nordwind: The British expression describing this is “Horses for courses”. Multiple avatars can help reduce incongruity and bad press. It is not the disparate activities themselves that are inherently discordant; rather it is (a) other people’s views according to fashion and bias, or (b) the disparate groups of friends and acquaintances formed through each activity, that are potentially discordant.
