    Aph jumps into the air...

    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Wheeee!, Aph!
    Eliza Madrigal: Excitable today Aph?
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ;)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Happy
    Eliza Madrigal: :))
    Eos Amaterasu: (brb)
    Pema Pera: :)
Eliza Madrigal: this room keeps rezzing and unrezzing for me... very strange, hope not to poof
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): sounds like my RL, Eliza.
boxy (alfred.kelberry): um, whats' the agenda?
Eliza Madrigal: but anyway... I wonder if we have guardian topics? :)
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): lol ;)
    Eliza Madrigal: :) Bruce
Aphrodite Macbain: Alfred - are you able to sit?
Pema Pera: I'd *love* to hear about the SL retreat
    Eliza Madrigal: Morning Eden :D
boxy (alfred.kelberry): aph, very much so :)
    Pema Pera: hi Eden
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): hi Eden ;)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hi Edie :)
boxy (alfred.kelberry): eden the elegant poetess :)
    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Enen:)
Eliza Madrigal: OH! Yes... let's hear about the SL retreat.... Bruce, Sunshine, Zen...
Adams Rubble: Hello Eden and all who came since my last hello :)
Pema Pera: and what we learned about it for future retreats
    Eos Amaterasu listens
    Eden Haiku: Hello everyone :)

Aphrodite Macbain: BTW I have been gathering all the recent comments on retreats into one document.
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): ten folks at every session -- six sessions -- each 90 minutes long. . .
    Eliza Madrigal: great, thanks Aph
Aphrodite Macbain: I am going to try and pull a hand book together
    Pema Pera: great!!
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): yes, Aph is doing good work with that -- I refer you to her.
Aphrodite Macbain: I will of course use the existing material in the wiki
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): luci! :)
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): all along the way, folks are making excellent suggestions. . .
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Luci :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Yes, wonderful
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): that will help future retreatants firm up the container, limit group size, and perhaps establish themes prior to the retreat itself.

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): it was my first retreat of any kind - and I am still very new at PaB - I loved the retreat

Aphrodite Macbain: Is here a good definition of the PURPOSE of retreats?

Lucinda Lavender: Hi ...sorry to be a bit late:)
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): hi Luci ;)
    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Luci
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hi Luci. GTSY
    Agatha Macbeth: Hello Luci
Aphrodite Macbain: and your pretty tights
    Lucinda Lavender: Hi everyone:)
Eliza Madrigal: Not sure there can be one purpose... as each person is so different, but interesting question
Aphrodite Macbain: something we can all agree on.

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): for me, Retreat is pulling back into a "safe" and empathetic space to re-consider things that are important to me. . .
Aphrodite Macbain: so we are guided by the principle
Zen (zen.arado) would like more structure - but that's just me
Eliza Madrigal: I'm curious to hear about the difference between the two SL retreats... there may be much to see in that
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): and that can go very deep - - as with insight into my intentions, interpretations, etc.

Eos Amaterasu: There's intersection of what "retreat" means in different retreat practice traditions, and what it is for Play as Being, and then how each individual embodies that

Aphrodite Macbain: that's good Bruce. A space for reflection with others

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): to me it's about opening up to myself - and feeling oneness with all others doing the same

Eos Amaterasu: reatreat as "retreating" somewhat from "normal" being
Aphrodite Macbain: a place removed from the daily activities to think more deeply about our world and ourselves?
Eos Amaterasu: into special container, environment, so as to be able to open up.... that's pretty general
    Eliza Madrigal: mmm, nods
Eos Amaterasu: and open up with others

Adams Rubble: An SL retreat happens in both RL and SL...
    Eliza Madrigal: YES

Eos Amaterasu: and PaB has its own special "life as a laboratory" style

Aphrodite Macbain: I can use all these - I will take them from the log for this meeting
Adams Rubble: the meeting times are just one small part

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): In both SL retreats, I have had VERY specific "goals" -- and in both retreats I was able to go deeply into those. . .
    Eos Amaterasu: personal goals, Bruce?
Aphrodite Macbain: I find it helps to have a goal. It keeps me focussed
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Yes, but "goals" is not exactly the word I mean. . .
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): more like "intentions" - - -
Eliza Madrigal: yes for me a goal to drop seems to help :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: no, intentions?
    Eos Amaterasu likes "intention"

Adams Rubble: Something different is happening to each of us in RL and that something is very important and hard to define

Eos Amaterasu: intention is more open ended
Aphrodite Macbain: OK I'll use that
Sun (sunshine.vayandar): For me it was - listening - learning to listen to others in the group
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): intention to maintain continuity of consciousness, for example.
Zen Arado had no intentions or goals
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hiya Barca
    Agatha Macbeth: Hello barca
    Eos Amaterasu: :-), Zen
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): hi Barcalona ;)
    Barcalona Rhapsody: hi all
    Aphrodite Macbain: we are 12
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): http://t.xalan.org/guardian-house.jpg
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): barca :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: no 13
Zen (zen.arado): it's true - I tried to stay open to whatever might come up

Aphrodite Macbain: so the retreat can be used for a variety of purposes and intentions
Eos Amaterasu: a space for holding openness (and letting go of holding :-)
Aphrodite Macbain: a safe space where one can be open

Eos Amaterasu: just dangerous enough :-)

    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ;)
    Eos Amaterasu: with friends
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): a safe space where one can re-establish balance among persons of empathy.
Aphrodite Macbain: so perhaps what is comon is the "container"

Zen (zen.arado): it felt a bit like a ouijah board at times to me :)
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
    Aphrodite Macbain: how so Zen?
Pema Pera smiling and reflecting on "just dangerous enough" :-)
Zen (zen.arado): just waiting to see what would come up
    Aphrodite Macbain: edgy

Zen (zen.arado): and things being pushed in different directions by members of the group

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Bruce brings the danger with him. . .
Eos Amaterasu: even slightly scary to intend such openness
Aphrodite Macbain: Zen- you look like you are driving a big vehicle with a big wheel
    Eos Amaterasu: maha vehicle
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
Zen (zen.arado): it's tough wrestling with it too :)

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): Yes I liked that there was no plan somehow - things just happened

Eos Amaterasu: Zen is our bus driver :-)
Eden Haiku: No, Zen looks like an alchemist about to create gold :)
    Zen (zen.arado): I wish
Aphrodite Macbain: Is there anything that the attendees of the last retreat would recommend for future ones?
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
Zen (zen.arado): it would be a personal preference
Aphrodite Macbain: what s/be kept? what s/b changed?

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): I liked when we were only 5-6 - 10 was a bit too many I think
Aphrodite Macbain: yes, in the email comments, 9 seemed to be maximum
Zen (zen.arado): yeh - it took so long to get around the group when it was big

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): and I like the idea of a greeter
Aphrodite Macbain: someone called it a registrar
Zen (zen.arado): depends how long the peole talk too though
Eos Amaterasu: greeter / registrar : you mean what Bruce did?

Aphrodite Macbain: can the group be divided into two at some point?

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): nope -- not me.
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): yes, Aph. . .
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): perhaps one for Western Hemis, and one for Eastern....?
Pema Pera: alternatively, you can have more retreats, until the group size for each one becomes small enough
Aphrodite Macbain: registrar would keep track of who is coming, welcome people, say good by
Pema Pera: might be nicer than splitting up into separate groups

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): and one for africa ;)

Eos Amaterasu: Yes, good to have two "hosts" to help organize a retreat

Eden Haiku: What time is it now in South Africa Sunshine?
Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ( I wish there were other africans in PaB ;)
Pema Pera: Africa after the revolution(s)!
Zen (zen.arado): at zazenkai's I attend they split people up into couples for exercizes or small groups
Aphrodite Macbain: we wantAfrica to be part of the whole!
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): waka waka!
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): it's 6.22pm
Sun (sunshine.vayandar): so I fit into European time zone
Eliza Madrigal: in planning for the first retreat, there were a few days of focused pinning down of attendees and schedules... the second was similar but in both cases it was last minute before we had number of attendees set....
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): wakawaka ;))
    Aphrodite Macbain: perfect
Eden Haiku: Oh yes, not too difficult then :)

Aphrodite Macbain: yes. perhaps we ned to encourage people to book early
Zen Arado: agree it would be be better to have a deadline

Eliza Madrigal: that is what seems trickiest... that to have these on a continual basis that does seem necessary, so that we can make two retreats when necessary with numbers
Aphrodite Macbain: (of course I booked early and then had to cancel :-(
Bruce (bruce.mowbray) hopes it's not booking early with "Definite maybe"'s.
Aphrodite Macbain: yes. too often might be counterproductive
    Eos Amaterasu: :-), Bruce
    Eliza Madrigal nods @ Bruce
    Zen (zen.arado): true too Bruce
Eliza Madrigal: yes, that happens... perhaps we'll become more refined the more we do this
    Eos Amaterasu: not cat AVs
Aphrodite Macbain: we live in a definite maybe world

Adams Rubble: I'd like to suggest that a retreat could be as few as two people and could happen fairly spontaneously
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): wonderful suggestion, Adams.
Sun (sunshine.vayandar): yes I'd like to try that Adams ;)
Eden Haiku: A very flexible format, yes Adams, sounds nice :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    Zen (zen.arado): for how long?
Aphrodite Macbain: Darren said that too few people sometimes doesn't work- but it's worth a try

Eliza Madrigal: we do have to keep in mind that we have a 'spot' now... don't want to double book spontaneously :D

Aphrodite Macbain: It might be too intense- just 2 people?
Adams Rubble: yes, booking might be an issue but that might be a nice problem
    Eliza Madrigal: yes :)
    Eden Haiku: ;)

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): clearly, different formats will work better with different people -- and as Pema said, there could be more retreats to accommodate those differences.
Eos Amaterasu: one-day stands might be okay, Aph :-)
    Eliza Madrigal: hehehe

Zen (zen.arado): or how about regular retreat slot?
Eliza Madrigal: particular weekend of the month you mean, Zen?

Pema Pera: For most of our activities, we have a rather rigid container, with almost complete freedom inside, a curious contrast: sessions four times a day, RL retreats four times a year; we could try to have an SL retreat every month, say, and see how it goes -- the advantage of a rigid container would be not needing to set up everything from scratch again each time.

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): retreats are only for guardians right?
Zen (zen.arado): my meditation group has a one day 'retreat' every month
    Zen (zen.arado): RL that is
Bruce (bruce.mowbray) murmers - ice storm moving in now in RL. . . If I poof, that's the reason.
    Pema Pera: yes, Sun

    Zen (zen.arado): yes
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ok ty
Eos Amaterasu: throw wood on the fire, Bruce
    Zen (zen.arado): just suggestion

Eliza Madrigal: yes... having it once a month, or even twice, would allow us to set up 'greeters' in advance
    Eliza Madrigal: to coordinate
Eliza Madrigal: and wouldn't block spontaneous gatherings
Eliza Madrigal: from occuring at other times

Aphrodite Macbain: yes and allow different times for different time zones

    Eliza Madrigal: yes
Zen (zen.arado): does that take away some of the sense of commitment?
Bruce (bruce.mowbray) murmers again -- the storm might break my sattelite connection (sry). -- not sure wood on fire would help there.
Eliza Madrigal: maybe it allows people to plan to commit
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Zen (zen.arado): yes
Aphrodite Macbain: oh dear, Bruce. and I have glorious sunshine for a change

Pema Pera contemplates a steam driven internet connection for Bruce . . . .
    Eos Amaterasu: steampunck
    Eden Haiku: :)
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ;)
    Eos Amaterasu: steam signals
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Sam :)
Eliza Madrigal: I've thought it might be nice to have theme retreats also... to dig into particular topics... but maybe in time
    Pema Pera: hi zero!
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi oO0Oo!
    Eden Haiku: hello oOOOo!!!
    Lucinda Lavender: HiSamuo
    Yaku (yakuzza.lethecus): hey sam
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Yo, ooo)))ooo
    Aphrodite Macbain: welcome Samuo
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): hi Sam ;))

Eos Amaterasu: I can coordinate setting which weekend to regularly schedule a retreat
Eos Amaterasu: and maybe also which during-the-week time (if that also works for people)
Eos Amaterasu: and the find a couple of AVs to "host" each retreat

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): I feel that Aph's accounting will give us a basis for setting up retreats in the future -- once we discern what Pabbers want. . .

Eos Amaterasu: or they can contact me
    Eliza Madrigal: Thanks Eos :)
Adams Rubble: Thank you Eos :)
Eos Amaterasu: Next one will be in March, which is a week or so away
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Sounds very good, Eos and Eliza.
Eos Amaterasu: I'll post a message to the general guardian list
    Aphrodite Macbain: Oh? great!

Pema Pera: did RL feel different as well, during the days of the SL retreat -- were you able to integrate to some extent the atmosphere/mood/sense?

    Agatha Macbeth: Hello 0
Eliza Madrigal: was certainly true for me of the first one... to the extent of having reverberations post retreat , etc. deepening of sense of practice overall
Aphrodite Macbain: I am so looking forward to a retreat - I was sad to have missed the last one.

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): I felt that I did, yes, Pema - - and I continued that for several days afterward by unplugging my telephones in RL. . . and continuing the practice.
    Pema Pera: :-)
Aphrodite Macbain: becasue eit felt so peaceful Bruce?
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): (much to the annoyance of some friends, I might add).
    Pema Pera: hahaha
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): yes, Aph -- but also because I recognized I had a lot more "work" to do -- and the retreat brought that awareness to the fore.

    Art History Workshop today:

Eden Haiku: Adams, the conference on "translation of relics" seems really interesting. Unfortunatly I can't go ;(
boxy (alfred.kelberry): you create peace in one place, and annoyance someplace else :)
Aphrodite Macbain: Tell them you wil become an even better friend
    Eliza Madrigal: :) Aph
Zen (zen.arado): I would need more meditation and less talking for any sense of peace
    Pema Pera smiles at Alfred
Eos Amaterasu: yes, boxy: open to both peace and annoyance
Aphrodite Macbain: which conference where ?
Eliza Madrigal hopes to attend the art history workshop today
Zen (zen.arado): but I am used to 5 day silent retreats

    Pema Pera: hey, Sharon!
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): hi Sharon ;)
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): Yo, SSL!
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Sharon :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hello SSL
SophiaSharon Larnia: hi everyone, sorry to come in at the end :)
    Zen (zen.arado): Hi Sharon :)
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): shopia :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hiya Shaz :)
    SophiaSharon Larnia: hehe alf
    Lucinda Lavender: Hi Sophia Sharon:)
Eos Amaterasu: HI SS, starting at the end :-)
boxy (alfred.kelberry): hello neko girl :)
    SophiaSharon Larnia: ;p
Eden Haiku: Art History Workshop in Kira Cafe at noon today.,
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): oh, great
Aphrodite Macbain: oh thanks I'd lost track of that
boxy (alfred.kelberry): i'll try to be there
SophiaSharon Larnia: wow full house today, welcome new guardians ^^
Eden Haiku: By dr Milanovic from Rutgers University. Adams emailed us about it.

Eos Amaterasu: Any more reflections on SL retreat / RL intersections?
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): I will try to get back from Quaker Mtg. in time for that -- sounds very interesting.
    Aphrodite Macbain wonders what relics
Zen (zen.arado): don't look at me
Eden Haiku: Saintly relics Aph :)
Eos Amaterasu: a lock of Pema's hair....
    Adams Rubble smiles
    Eden Haiku: hehe
    Eliza Madrigal giggles
    Pema Pera hides his hair
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ;)
Pema Pera looks around for threatening scissors
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
boxy (alfred.kelberry): maybe it's time for a new haircut, pema? :)
Eliza Madrigal: only friendly ones to be seen
    Agatha Macbeth: Beware the snip

Pema Pera: in the New Orleans RL retreat the sense of integration was palpable

boxy (alfred.kelberry): i think you're the only one who hasn't changed since i met you :)
Pema Pera: it was an urban retreat
Aphrodite Macbain: You can have mine Pema
Pema Pera: even more urban than the San Francisco retreat last April
Aphrodite Macbain: I change mine regularly
boxy (alfred.kelberry): open yourself to new experience, pema :P
    Eliza Madrigal: true, re NO

    Eos Amaterasu: more musical, too
Pema Pera: with the music from Bourbon Street joining our meditations :)
Agatha Macbeth: Must have been nice
Eden Haiku: Meditating on jazz ?

Eliza Madrigal: that was all the way through... there was no boundary really between retreat and being 'in' everything

Pema Pera: nice yes and also a challenge
    Pema Pera: to integrate

boxy (alfred.kelberry): oh, i really like downtown session
boxy (alfred.kelberry): meditation in a crowded cafe
Eos Amaterasu: non, je ne regrette rien...
    Pema Pera: (^_^)
boxy (alfred.kelberry): various sounds and smells
    Agatha Macbeth: Merci Edith
    Eliza Madrigal smiles happily
Eden Haiku: remembers Eliza posting the song...
Pema Pera: we got our mojo working . . .
Eos Amaterasu: (Edith Piaf song sung by chanteuse at BMC club)
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): I downloaded it Eden ;)

Aphrodite Macbain: must be hard to meditate and counter to the "container" that is established
    Eden Haiku: ;)
Pema Pera: well, "meditation" takes on a different meaning

Eliza Madrigal: that's what is fascinating Aph... no sense of countering... yet making space to open up
Eos Amaterasu: music has openness and emotion and intensity : just like us :-)

Pema Pera: from calmness (as side effect) to awareness (as essential)

Aphrodite Macbain hem hem tries n a husky voice
Eliza Madrigal: so meeting yes, countering no... funny
Aphrodite Macbain: music is the container?
Eliza Madrigal: much application for SL retreats
    Pema Pera: !!
Eos Amaterasu: I found SL retreat to be similar to urban RL retreat
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): ;)
    Eliza Madrigal: yes

Aphrodite Macbain: is there anything else on the agenda?

    Eos Amaterasu: mixing (S)(R)Ls
Eliza Madrigal: because though one can intend to set aside 'everything', really, one has to work with what is there...

Aphrodite Macbain: BTW we have made a significant increase in donations. Thank you all!
    Eos Amaterasu: !
    Agatha Macbeth smiles
Sun (sunshine.vayandar): where does one donate ;)
Pema Pera: and thank YOU, aphrodite, for your gentle yet firm cheerleading!
Eliza Madrigal: And thank you, Aph
Lucinda Lavender: glad to hear that:)
Eos Amaterasu: bottom left of every wiki page there is a donations link
    Sun (sunshine.vayandar): kk ;)
Aphrodite Macbain: Yw. I'll tell you later Sunshine- but it's in the wiki
    Aphrodite Macbain: thanks Eos
Aphrodite Macbain: Storm is most grateful
Eden Haiku: I see we are still far from our target: still about $400 to raise...
    Agatha Macbeth: Yay for Stormy
    Aphrodite Macbain: Yes. true. Eden

boxy (alfred.kelberry): if you don't mind, i'd like to ask pema how his discovery of time is going on in respect to scientific goals he has posed
Aphrodite Macbain: But it was a significant increase from last time $200)
Bruce (bruce.mowbray) thinks -- Whew! Come sit with us on Friday mornings, Boxy. . .
Aphrodite Macbain: Yes, I have enjoyed your recent posting Pema
Eden Haiku: Yes, true Aph :) Let,s see the bright side :)
    boxy (alfred.kelberry): :)
    Aphrodite Macbain smiles at Eden
Pema Pera: thanks, Alfred and Aphrodite -- see http://wiki.playasbeing.org/PaB_Books/Magic_of_Time/Time_Sessions

boxy (alfred.kelberry): pema, you want me to read all the book? isn't there a simpler answer? :)

Aphrodite Macbain: I downloaded it on to my desk top so I could read it carefully

Bruce (bruce.mowbray): That's your assignment for Friday morning, Boxy.
boxy (alfred.kelberry): do you think you meet the scientific goals with it?
Eos Amaterasu: Time in a Nutshell
Aphrodite Macbain: what are the "scientific" goals?

Eden Haiku: Robots have their own fast circuits on Intrenet now, don't they Boxy? You can compute all this in no time!
boxy (alfred.kelberry): pema should know :)
    Pema Pera: :-)
boxy (alfred.kelberry): i'm vague about it
Eos Amaterasu calls, "Watson, come here!"
    Eliza Madrigal: hehe
Pema Pera: As Bruce said, on Friday we can talk at length about all that

Pema Pera: I must say, I'm very impressed by the sustained depth & cheer of this weekly guardian meeting -- not having been here for more than half a year, I can sense a palpable difference, in terms of -- how to say? -- maturation and integration and cameraderie

Aphrodite Macbain: elementary particles dear Watson
