The Guardian for this meeting was Fael Illyar. The comments are by Fael Illyar.
Agatha Macbeth: Hello recorder :)
--BELL--
Agatha Macbeth: (Looks like Fael's not arrived yet)
Agatha Macbeth: Hello Cal
Agatha Macbeth: You Ok?
Calvino Rabeni: Hi, Agatha
Agatha Macbeth: No Fael yet ;-)
Agatha Macbeth: Bless her
Calvino Rabeni: IIs fael's session today?
Agatha Macbeth: Should be, I think
Agatha Macbeth: She usually has this slot
Agatha Macbeth: Probably trying new wings on or something
Agatha Macbeth: How long have you been a guardian now Cal?
Calvino Rabeni: Not long, about since late November I think
Agatha Macbeth: Ah, right
Agatha Macbeth: And how have you found it, generally?
Calvino Rabeni: :) good generally - say I'm distracted by the appearance of your avarar's raised left arm :)
Agatha Macbeth: Raised left arm?
Agatha Macbeth: I look ok to me ;-)
Agatha Macbeth: Hang on...
Calvino Rabeni: One of those SL quirks
Agatha Macbeth: How's that?
Calvino Rabeni: FIxed.
Agatha Macbeth nods
Agatha Macbeth: Weird
Agatha Macbeth: Seems more lag here recently
Calvino Rabeni: One time everyone else saw me standing like a scarecrow - everyone but me - and thought I was doing it to give a message - I had no clue :)
Agatha Macbeth: Sometimes you are here and people are part buried in the ground!
Agatha Macbeth: SL can be strange sometimes
Agatha Macbeth: The worst part is often you can't see it yourself
Calvino Rabeni: Informing others is one of those things like in RL - "you have spinach in your teeth" or some such semi-embarrasing condition
Agatha Macbeth: As I couldn't then
Agatha Macbeth: Yes :)
Agatha Macbeth: And thank you!
Fael Illyar: Hi Cal, Agatha :) Sorry, I'm late.
Agatha Macbeth: Hello Fael :)
Agatha Macbeth: Starting to worry about you
Fael Illyar: me?
Agatha Macbeth grins
Agatha Macbeth: You should have no worries with that big clock of yours!
Fael Illyar: I'm ... a bit distracted I suppose :)
Fael Illyar: big clock? where?
Agatha Macbeth: Ah
Agatha Macbeth: At your home?
Fael Illyar: huh?
Fael Illyar confused.
Agatha Macbeth: The skybox?
Fael Illyar: I wasn't there... and I don't usually look at that one :)
Agatha Macbeth: Oh right
Fael Illyar: the time shown on the upper right on my computer screen is easier :P
Fael Illyar: It's just when I forget to look at it :)
Agatha Macbeth: Well, yeah
Agatha Macbeth smiles
Fael Illyar: I think I'm starting to need 2 alarms for each scheduled meeting :P
Agatha Macbeth: Two?
Fael Illyar: one 30 minutes before so I'll remember I have one coming. second one 5 minutes before so I remember to move in time :P
Agatha Macbeth: He he
Agatha Macbeth: Some people would have us believe there's no such thing as time ;-)
Calvino Rabeni: Yes, in general, for thing X, there are lots of people who want ust to believe "There's no such thing as X" contrary to all appearances.
--BELL--
Calvino Rabeni: What's with that, I wonder?
Fael Illyar: well, you know, there isn't such _thing_ as time :P But that doesn't mean time is meaningless :)
Agatha Macbeth: 'Time is an illusion: dinner time doubly so'
Agatha Macbeth: Ford Prefect :)
Fael Illyar smiles.
Fael Illyar: there certainly is nothing you can point at and say "that's time"
Agatha Macbeth: Don't some people think of it as the fourth dimension?
Fael Illyar: yes
Agatha Macbeth: Hmm
Fael Illyar: try pointing along it :P
Calvino Rabeni: So why is it important to say - it exists, but not as a "thing"?
Agatha Macbeth: Not easy, I agree
Agatha Macbeth shrugs
Calvino Rabeni: I heard a philosopher say - yes, it is real, but it doesn't exist
Agatha Macbeth: It's an intersesting concept
Agatha Macbeth: Well, a philosopher would say that :)
Calvino Rabeni: So is it a kind of way of being efficient - to clear the mind of the "less real" to focus on some more favored "real"?
Calvino Rabeni: Or to get rid of intellectual clutter?
Calvino Rabeni: Or due to a reluctance to entertain mutiple complementary ideas at once?
Agatha Macbeth: I'd have to think about that....
Fael Illyar: thinking of time as a thing could lead to all sorts of strageness :)
Calvino Rabeni: Or to take away a feeling of importance, about the so-called "unreal" idea?
Calvino Rabeni: Or to say, don't bother me with *that* - I'd prefer to think about *this* instead :)
Agatha Macbeth: Things can occupy the same space at different times
Agatha Macbeth: And the same time but different space
Agatha Macbeth: I guess most of us think of time as simply a series of reference points
Agatha Macbeth: Like 'I have to be at PaB at 1.00' :)
Calvino Rabeni: I think you're right, but that time seems more like "space"
Calvino Rabeni: it has lines and points in it
Agatha Macbeth: Didn't Einstein say the words 'space' and 'time' were interchangeable?
Agatha Macbeth: Or something
Fael Illyar: maybe, but even if he didn't I'd say that sounds right :)
Agatha Macbeth smiles and nods
Calvino Rabeni: In a way, but that's according to mathematics, and doesn't hold up against experience or experiment very well
Agatha Macbeth: He was pretty smart about most things :)
Agatha Macbeth: Mmm
Calvino Rabeni: It's a simple mathematics - everything is smooth and internally structureless
Calvino Rabeni: So all those lumpy matter things don't fit into it very well
Calvino Rabeni: Maybe the space is lumpy too
Agatha Macbeth: Aye, there's the rub :)
Agatha Macbeth: 'Lumpy space' there's an interesting concept
Calvino Rabeni: but the math says, space is nothing in itself
Calvino Rabeni: just the background of measuring the thing that show up in it
Calvino Rabeni: and same with time
Agatha Macbeth nods
Agatha Macbeth: A complex subject to be sure
Calvino Rabeni: so in that sense - using the logic of before - time and space don't exist either
Calvino Rabeni: But it won't keep me from "lunch"
Agatha Macbeth: How does Dr Who get on then?
Agatha Macbeth: The Tardis would have problems with no time or space ;-)
Calvino Rabeni: Does Who get on How?
--BELL--
Agatha Macbeth: Anyway. That's a nice outfit Fael :)
Fael Illyar smiles 'Thank you.'
Agatha Macbeth: I like the sparklers in your hair
Fael Illyar: me too :)
Calvino Rabeni: So Ag, what brought you to PAB and led you to get involved?
Agatha Macbeth: Well, I found it by accident basically
Agatha Macbeth: I came to the mainland at Hanja and headed North
Agatha Macbeth: And found this place :)
Fael Illyar smiles.
Agatha Macbeth: At first I wondered what the hell all these people were doing
Agatha Macbeth: Sitting in a circle and saying all this strange stuff
Calvino Rabeni: :)
Fael Illyar: Good thinking from Pema's part. To have this place right next to that place where loads of newbies pop up at :)
Fael Illyar: welcome center, was it?
Agatha Macbeth: But od course, had I gone South instead....
Agatha Macbeth: Yes, the Hanja welcome area
Fael Illyar: you might have bumped into my shop if you went south :P
Agatha Macbeth: Oh is that way?
Fael Illyar: yep, about the same distance away
Agatha Macbeth: Right
Agatha Macbeth: Which sim is it in again?
Fael Illyar: Nari
Agatha Macbeth: That's it
Agatha Macbeth checks the map
Calvino Rabeni: And what happened then, Aga? WIth all the "strange stuff"?
Agatha Macbeth: Ah yes, I see it
Calvino Rabeni: (round about then, in my story, Calvino went to the wiki and read a bunch of explanations)
Agatha Macbeth: Whoa! Lot of people there...
Fael Illyar: people? where?
Agatha Macbeth: Oh sorry, they're in the one below
Agatha Macbeth: Soyeonpyeongdo
Calvino Rabeni: Aga is looking at the map I think
Agatha Macbeth: What a mouthful!
Agatha Macbeth: Yes I was! :))
Agatha Macbeth: (hence all the technical stuff)
Agatha Macbeth: I keep forgetting about the big map
Agatha Macbeth: Hardly ever look at it for some reason
Fael Illyar: oh yes, quite a crowd in there
Fael Illyar: I usually don't use it.
Agatha Macbeth: Must be something good on :)
Fael Illyar: it's not very useful :)
Fael Illyar: but those people are in Kyonu
Agatha Macbeth: They are?
Agatha Macbeth: Oh
Agatha Macbeth looks again
Agatha Macbeth: So they are
--BELL--
Agatha Macbeth: Now I'm curious to know what's going on there!
Fael Illyar: me too actually, 27 people in one place like that is rare
Agatha Macbeth: Sure is
Yakuzza Lethecus: hey everyone
Fael Illyar: Hi Yaku :)
Agatha Macbeth: Hi Yaku :)
Calvino Rabeni: Go on, check it out! I'll hold down the fort
Fael Illyar: ok, see you in a bit :)
Calvino Rabeni: Yakusan, hello
Agatha Macbeth: What is it about PaB makes men lose their hair I wonder?
Agatha Macbeth: :)
Calvino Rabeni: It's the hair
Agatha Macbeth: Or lack of...
Calvino Rabeni: Do you know where to get good short hair styles in SL?
Agatha Macbeth: Not offhand, no
Agatha Macbeth: I don't use 'em myself ;-)))
Yakuzza Lethecus: thats easy, look on my short hairstyle :)
Calvino Rabeni: Basically I tried several varieties of hair, not especially liking them
Calvino Rabeni: It appears to be technically hard to do short styles
Fael Illyar: back
Agatha Macbeth: WB Fael
Fael Illyar: looks like a shop
Yakuzza Lethecus: wb
Agatha Macbeth: Not yours then?
Fael Illyar: with a thing that gives out 2L$ every 10 minutes ... I'd guess that random person who's there gets it
Agatha Macbeth: Ah, campers
Agatha Macbeth: Should have guessed...
Fael Illyar: although, considering the number of people, it just might give to everyone
Calvino Rabeni: Camping isn't as big a thing as it used to be, is it?
Fael Illyar: nope
Agatha Macbeth: Looks like it is down there! :)
Fael Illyar: but if that thing gives that 2L$/10 minutes to everyone, it's about as good as it was when I started out myself :)
Agatha Macbeth grins
Calvino Rabeni: Isn't @2L equal to about a micro-cent?
Fael Illyar: 4L would be about one euro-cent
Agatha Macbeth: It doesn't buy you much certainly
Fael Illyar: 3L would be a bit more than one us-cent
Calvino Rabeni: That is, less value than what it takes to operate your computer for the same amount of time
Agatha Macbeth: :)
Fael Illyar: Yep, most likely is.
Fael Illyar: but for most students, electricity is included in the rent and is fixed, not variable.
Fael Illyar: at least in Finland
Agatha Macbeth: Not sure if that's the case in the UK
Calvino Rabeni: Have you read about the "gold mining" industry - there was an article in I think, Scientific American
Fael Illyar: and many people in SL are still living with their parents.
Agatha Macbeth: Not me ;-)
Calvino Rabeni: So I'm wondering if it has a noticeable presence in SL
Agatha Macbeth: No Cal, missed that one
Calvino Rabeni: There are some wandering beggars
Agatha Macbeth: Oh we certainly have those!
Calvino Rabeni: And in some countries there are big "call center" like operations to organize that activity
Calvino Rabeni: It is an industrialized process, not individuals
Agatha Macbeth: Erk
Calvino Rabeni: Yeah, part of the information economy
Fael Illyar: if there's money in it, someone will try it out.
Agatha Macbeth: Or the 'rip off' economy :)
Calvino Rabeni: Generally true - the economics might be better in other games, besides SL
Calvino Rabeni: Do people sell avatars here?
Fael Illyar: of course, everything anyone makes can be sold
Agatha Macbeth: I think you can buy full Avs yes
Agatha Macbeth: I've seen them given away as freebies at Noob centres too
Fael Illyar: but it's time for me to go. Have fun everyone :)
Calvino Rabeni: With friends, reputations, houses, huge inventories, etc.
Agatha Macbeth: Is there a meeting today?
Calvino Rabeni: I GTG also, see you
Calvino Rabeni: Yes
Agatha Macbeth: Ah, where is it?
Calvino Rabeni: village hall
Agatha Macbeth: Ok, c u there
Agatha Macbeth: You too Yaku?
