The Guardian for this meeting was stevenaia Michinaga. The comments are by stevenaia Michinaga.
stevenaia Michinaga: hello Arch
Archmage Atlantis: Greetings, Stevenaia
stevenaia Michinaga: hello Three, how have you been
Archmage Atlantis: ThreeDee, long time no see....welcome Friend :)
Threedee Shepherd: Well, I was ill for a month with H1N1 flu, now recovered
Threedee Shepherd: Hi friends
stevenaia Michinaga: have you been productive in your absence?
Archmage Atlantis: Oh, my, sorry to hear that.
stevenaia Michinaga: oh no
stevenaia Michinaga: my lag
stevenaia Michinaga: glad to see you back on your paws
Threedee Shepherd: yes, actually. We have gained much OpenSim experience and are almost finished moving to a new, better provider.
Threedee Shepherd: thanks for the good wishes. How have each of you been
Threedee Shepherd: my typing has not improved, though ;D
Archmage Atlantis: That is good, now I actually have to start learning about OpenSim *grin*
stevenaia Michinaga: I have had a few very busy months, things are looking good ahead
Threedee Shepherd: sounds like both of you are on good trajectories
Archmage Atlantis: Visiting the local hospital now and again, but better now :)
Threedee Shepherd: Glad to hear that Archmage
stevenaia Michinaga: open sim..... I've seen a few ppl's Open Sims, seems there is much falling through the ground there
Threedee Shepherd: OpenSim physics is a bit different than SL, and is still being polished
stevenaia Michinaga: must to polish in these environments
Threedee Shepherd: Yes, but in the long run it will allow us to offer inexpensive sims for educational use.
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, I was amazed how expensive holding land can be, lucky for the Lindens
stevenaia Michinaga: considering it's virtual land
Threedee Shepherd: Indeed, and the Lindens seem to have hit a plateau in both usage and improvements. they are no longer early-stage "cowboys"
Archmage Atlantis: The natural growth of a business, actually, though.
Threedee Shepherd: unfortunately true, Arch, and it may turn out to be to their detriment
stevenaia Michinaga: Was reading a legal case about a land owned by someone who died and their partner could not keep up the fees and in the end the asset cannot be "willed" and was lost
Archmage Atlantis: It is good to have OpenSims to keep the Lindens on their toes :)
stevenaia Michinaga: in SL
Archmage Atlantis: Well, we still have a role for IBM and Microsoft in society, so I'd say it's just natural evolution.
Threedee Shepherd: hehe. Well if one owns an asset with full prims, there are now ways to back it up in your computer. Also, for OpenSim, you can have a single file that is a total backup "image" of your sim that your can remount later.
stevenaia Michinaga: I would be a great and inexpensive private environment for PaB except that it would be difficult for new people to find us
stevenaia Michinaga: *It
stevenaia Michinaga: or can many Open Sims be connected?
Threedee Shepherd: Actually, IBM as we once KNEW it went out of business. It was not noticeable because they had enough cash on hand to survive. They then reinvented themselves as more of a service provider than major computer manufacturer.
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, true 3D
Threedee Shepherd: If your sim is on the main OSgrid, it is automatically and necessarily connected to the 1000+ others already there
stevenaia Michinaga: awww, I see, always eye opening , but makes sense
stevenaia Michinaga: what good is a grid of one
Threedee Shepherd: We are purposely running our own "collection" of independent stand-alone sims, although some of them can be accessed by anyone who knows how.
--BELL--
Archmage Atlantis: Reminds me of bulletin boards back in the day *chuckle*
Threedee Shepherd: A company wants a OS presence that is perhaps tied to it's web site, or used by its customers, etc.
stevenaia Michinaga: Multiverse now exists on cyberspace
Threedee Shepherd: Schools want to share resources but have legal issues if minor-children are involved. Turns out there are many useful stand-alone uses. Stand-alone does not mean inaccessible.
stevenaia Michinaga: just somewhat inconvenient
stevenaia Michinaga: knowing where to look
Threedee Shepherd: It either means access requires knowing its there--perhaps because it is advertised on a company web-site. Or there can be total control over access for many legitimate reasons
stevenaia Michinaga: it would be a nice way to attend class streaming into Open Sim if you get up late
stevenaia Michinaga: and be interactive as if you were there
Threedee Shepherd: for example, we are developing a small specialized museum sim that also had a WWW site that you could find via Google, and that web site will point to the OS and have access instructions.
Threedee Shepherd: *has
Threedee Shepherd: Such a teaching situation is entirely possible.
Archmage Atlantis: The problem with
Archmage Atlantis: Google now, is it is selling placement to those who can afford to pay the most
stevenaia Michinaga: even lectures and RL Streaming video here are quite effective
Archmage Atlantis: It has also left it's pioneer/innovator days behind
Archmage Atlantis: So, with the wealth of information and misinformation out there, comes the possibility of control
Threedee Shepherd: Yes and no regarding google, I think, Arch. they always seem to have new aps to offer and meanwhile the quality of their ongoing service is still excellent. Google Wave is just one example of new stuff.
Archmage Atlantis: China is managing to get the benefits of the web in economics, but with an authoritarian model
stevenaia Michinaga: Hello Crorvi
Threedee Shepherd: Arch, I cynically remind you that when making a decision, most (and I do mean most) people do not want to be confused with the facts ;>
Archmage Atlantis: Hi Corvus
stevenaia Michinaga: haven't seen you in a while
Threedee Shepherd: Hi Corvi
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, that's reality 3D, not cynicism
Archmage Atlantis: And my typing, spelling and grammar seem to be deteriorating, not just my typing *smile*
Threedee Shepherd: I think a fair statement, is that information can only be as good as its user
stevenaia Michinaga: have you seen new directions in Open Sim Usage as you get more immersed in development Three?
Threedee Shepherd: It's still "early-days". However, are the signs of future growth and usage are there in terms of various folks who are experimenting.
Threedee Shepherd: Has PaB changed much in the past few months?
stevenaia Michinaga: Are your clients approaching it in a forward thinking way with ongoing possibilities being considered or keeping it simple
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: Seems to be an ongoing venture (I'm still here)
Archmage Atlantis: I think it has changed some since I began to come, 3D......but that has only been recently
stevenaia Michinaga: the structure is slowly changing as people's times available change
Threedee Shepherd: clients seem to know that the kind of functionality available in SL (and OS0 is useful, and really have no idea about the "backend" we try to focus on an existing need, rather than be a solution looking for a problem.
Threedee Shepherd: how is the structure changing
Archmage Atlantis: I was pleased to see the Univ of Texas make a major commitment to SL
Threedee Shepherd: Yes, Arch, and time-will-tell if that spreads. They are paying mucho dollars
stevenaia Michinaga: More people involved in discussions involving group issues, many new people have passed through recently in the past few months with great depth of knowledge
Archmage Atlantis: It will spread, in my opinion.....
Threedee Shepherd: I agree it will spread, although SL will have competitors
Archmage Atlantis: I have met more interesting people here and in the groups they belong to than I ever have, even at college
Threedee Shepherd: mmhmm
Threedee Shepherd: Has the discussion of the "same old" topics moved, or does it get rejuvenated by new folks?
Archmage Atlantis: And the focus on where we are a entities, and as a planet, .....as well as what direction we as humans should go......is exciting
stevenaia Michinaga: much of the same directions , yet I think I have been exposed to many new things, and surprisingly, they all have Wiki pages :)
stevenaia Michinaga: even the obscure Hindu and strange Philosophical concepts I have never heard of
Threedee Shepherd: Is there something "different" that is being learned?
stevenaia Michinaga: Broadening horizons
Archmage Atlantis: I attended a seminar on values this afternoon that make me aware of thinking combining values, evolution, and the attempt by some to set that down as an evolving theory that was an unexpected delight
stevenaia Michinaga: ANd there was an October Retreat in Princeton and a Malta retreat planed for January
Threedee Shepherd: I noted the happening of the retreats
stevenaia Michinaga: Princeton was a lovely and sweetly intense experience, wonders why it's not so everyday
Threedee Shepherd: Is much of PaB/Kira now outside of the regular daily meetings
stevenaia Michinaga: I don;t know about Kira but there are many notices of meetings, many of which I simply can't attend but I try to read the logs when I have a moment
Archmage Atlantis: My experience is that PaB has influenced those who attend to carry their experience here outside to other groups and use it.
stevenaia Michinaga: we did have some Arizona College students come on sunday night for a group class research homework paper
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: we were the subject
Corvuscorva Nightfire laughs
Archmage Atlantis: "we" being Kira or PaB, or both, Steve?
stevenaia Michinaga: I think explaining answers to their questions helped the also see how they became the subject of the group that evening
stevenaia Michinaga: the PaB meeting
stevenaia Michinaga: *helped them
Archmage Atlantis: That sounds fascinating, would you be willing to share more?
stevenaia Michinaga: of course getting college students to sit quietly for 90 seconds is always difficult
stevenaia Michinaga: http://playasbeing.wik.is/Chat_Logs/2009/11/Homework
Archmage Atlantis: Tks
stevenaia Michinaga: it's an interesting task to explain or show any new group the dynamics of our interactions except through experience
stevenaia Michinaga: you either get very broad in your description (Nature of Reality) or very narrow (meditate for 9 seconds)
Archmage Atlantis: Both descriptions have validity, I believe, it
stevenaia Michinaga: I remember my first few meetings with Stim and Pema, I felt quite out of touch with much that was discussed, I suppose I still do
Archmage Atlantis: is the sharing of experience that ties it down for others, I believe
stevenaia Michinaga: and that commonality that arises from diversity is very powerful,
Archmage Atlantis: Agree
stevenaia Michinaga: perhaps the perfect ending for our hour here
--BELL--
Threedee Shepherd: mmhmm, I will be back, at least for a while, to "catch up"
stevenaia Michinaga: :), good seeing you again
Corvuscorva Nightfire: smiles.
Threedee Shepherd: same here
stevenaia Michinaga: night all
Corvuscorva Nightfire: night Stevie.
Archmage Atlantis: Night Steve
Threedee Shepherd: goodnight all
Archmage Atlantis: Night #D
Archmage Atlantis: I like the Anais Nin quote, Corvus......I have a fondness for quotes
Corvuscorva Nightfire: thank you!
