The Guardian for this meeting was Fael Illyar. The comments are by Fael Illyar.

    Archmage Atlantis: Hello again :)
    Fael Illyar: Hello again :)
    --BELL--
    Fael Illyar: Hi Calvino :)
    Calvino Rabeni: Hello all!
Calvino Rabeni: Fael, can you shoot an arrow?
Fael Illyar: no, the bow is just a decoration
    Calvino Rabeni: :) oh well
Archmage Atlantis: The bow of Athena (smile) spirtual shooting only *grin*
Fael Illyar: The outfit is named artemis but :)
Archmage Atlantis: I have a topic for today, to start the discussion
    Fael Illyar: Hi Gaya :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Hiya Gaya
    Gaya Ethaniel: Good morning/evening :)
Gaya Ethaniel: ah ... Scath couldn't make it ...
Fael Illyar: she emailed the group, did she not?
Archmage Atlantis: The topic I was thinking of is the winter solstice
    Gaya Ethaniel: mhm just saw
Archmage Atlantis: As it is so close and marks the beginning of the sun's return
Archmage Atlantis: I ran accross this today:
Archmage Atlantis: This year, the Winter Solstice will occur at 9:47 am in the morning of Monday, December 21, 2009. That will be the local time on the western coast of the continental United States. In other parts of the world, however, local times may be different at that same moment. For example, in England at that moment, the local time will be 17:47 in the late afternoon.
Archmage Atlantis: So 9:47 AM (09:00) is the SL/PST
Archmage Atlantis: We will all experience it together, no matter where we are in the world
Gaya Ethaniel: A day to chase evil spirits if you are Korean :P
    Fael Illyar smiles.
Archmage Atlantis: Makes sense, sort of a house cleaning, Gaya?
Gaya Ethaniel: mm ... I suppose so, marking a new beginning of some sort.
Fael Illyar: it's beginning of light :)
Gaya Ethaniel: perhaps or a cycle :)
    --BELL--
Calvino Rabeni: WInter solstice is in the middle of summer, if you live in australia
Gaya Ethaniel: That's true, most of Australians feel it weird to have Christmas in winter believe it or not.
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, quite true.......not exactly winter......Hummm forgot about that part..... so then in the Southern Hemisphere it is the beginning of shorter days and less light........did the native Austraians celebrate in reverse?
Calvino Rabeni: I don't know, mate!
Gaya Ethaniel: I don't know solitice traditions in Polineasian cultures ... something to look into I guess.
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, that sounds interesting........
Archmage Atlantis: As we head out into outerspace, whenever our descendents go, things will be different from everywhere ekse,,,,,and I can't even mange PST vs EST sometimes....ah well *smile*
Calvino Rabeni: AA, who is Freddie?
Archmage Atlantis: A baby dragon, male ..... Fredrica is also a baby dragon, a female
    Fael Illyar: they're cute :)
Archmage Atlantis: If scipts weren't suppressed here, they would fly around now and then, like a parrot might
Archmage Atlantis: And return to me
Calvino Rabeni: I like them and the tiger cub.
Gaya Ethaniel: Scripts run ok here ... I think.
Archmage Atlantis: They are all symbolic
Archmage Atlantis: Perhaps there is some scripting that controls them, but not other scripts
Archmage Atlantis: I don't know really, I just know what they represent as symbols to me
Fael Illyar: scripts aren't suppressed but Arch can't rez things here so they can't detach
Gaya Ethaniel: ah ... I see.
Calvino Rabeni: Gaya is there a special meaning of the rabbit in Korea?
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: Well ... it may refer either to a mountain or an ancient kingdom.
    --BELL--
Fael Illyar: oh, someone has spread snow all around here :)
    Fael Illyar: Ah, storm :)
    Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Archmage Atlantis: Yep, when he and I have both been here lately, I've noticed we have a minor blizzard at least once durning the session :)
Gaya Ethaniel: RL calls. Have a good weekend!
Fael Illyar: have a good weekend Gaya :)
Archmage Atlantis: Frankly, a beautiful snowfall just isn't enough to make me want to drive in the result
    Archmage Atlantis: Bye Cal
Fael Illyar: well, everything has it's up and downsides :)
Calvino Rabeni: and ins and outsides :)
Fael Illyar: yes, those too :)
Archmage Atlantis: Oops, sorry Cal, bye in absentia Gaya
    Fael Illyar smiles.
Calvino Rabeni: Are you an experienced SL scripter, Fael?
Fael Illyar: define experienced :) I know the system quite well but I don't spend all my time scripting. I do have spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours doing that though.
Calvino Rabeni: Camera is mysterious - I want a particular point of view after teleporting, but it seems pretty unpredictable
Fael Illyar: ah, camera I've had a little contact with but I think I did manage to make it do what I wanted.
Fael Illyar: but it has some limits that could hamper adjusting the view after teleport.
Fael Illyar: the most reliable way I can think of to make the camera point a certain direction is to give the AV a push in the right direction after the teleport
Calvino Rabeni: Will a script be able to do that, or must I control it with the viewer.
Fael Illyar: yes, scripts can push avatars and other objects
Calvino Rabeni: I want to be able to make it smooth and continuous to get here, but every time I pop in, there is a sense of disorientation while I look around
    --BELL--
Fael Illyar: ah, you wish to make your AV look into certain direction after teleport?
    Calvino Rabeni: yes
Fael Illyar: yes, I think you do need to give a push to your AV in the direction you want to view.
    Archmage Atlantis: A multi 90 second prose/poem:
Calvino Rabeni: thanks for the hint.
    Calvino Rabeni: OK
Archmage Atlantis: Tempus Whatsit? If only Albert had stayed a clerk If dogs and cats had not liked campfire If rabbits did not build kingdoms If the pharoahs did not built pyramids If snow and weather did not exist If cameras could not adjust perspective What time would it be Or Perhaps What Universe?
Fael Illyar: that should have the follow camera point that direction afterwards
Fael Illyar: Oh, curious poem :)
Fael Illyar: however, pushing only changes camera angle if the camera is in the follow avatar mode
Fael Illyar: if you've alt-clicked on something to focus the camera there, it will have no effect
Calvino Rabeni: How does it get in avatar-follow mode?
    Fael Illyar: it's the default
Fael Illyar: esc a few times returns the camera there
Fael Illyar: but I think after a teleport, it is in that mode
Calvino Rabeni: this may save me time.
Calvino Rabeni: About the poem, and this - it occurs to me, that perspectives are not enough, there needs to be a little push in a particular direction, to have a universe appear
Calvino Rabeni: Late night philosophy :)
Archmage Atlantis: Nice thought, Cal, and could be a useful philosophy for me and perhaps others
Calvino Rabeni: A very small push - but present.
Calvino Rabeni: Like the SL math breaks down if the direction vectors are zero, nothing can be done.
Fael Illyar: yes... but what is the push?
    Calvino Rabeni: Infinitesimal movement
Fael Illyar: ok, what is movement?
Calvino Rabeni: I suppose, what energy does
    Fael Illyar: hmm... change
    Calvino Rabeni: change plus direction
Calvino Rabeni: BUt change that doesn't go in any direction - interesting idea
    Fael Illyar smiles.
Fael Illyar: yes... unless there i change, nothing exists.
Calvino Rabeni: It reminds me of wu-wei. Action that has no commitment or form.
Archmage Atlantis: Is to exist is to change, and to not change is to not exist, then Fael?
Fael Illyar: Arch, yes, that would follow.
Fael Illyar: but there is nothing that does not change.
Archmage Atlantis: I need to take care of RL for a moment.....take care Cal, I will see you in a bit Faell.
Calvino Rabeni: See you later AA
Calvino Rabeni: That talk reminds me of a concentration exercise I used to do - think I'll do it in the pause. Imagining a ball of motion, infinitely condensing to a point.
    --BELL--
Calvino Rabeni: I need to go - thanks for the late night (for me) sit, Fael.
Fael Illyar: Good night Calvino :)
